JC writes: '''A comparative analysis of Goa with the surrounding
territories i.e.
Savantwadi and Karwar. ( 1961 )
Response: Yes, I supose it could be done today even if one has not been to
Savantwadi or Karwar..
Let us begin: There is one thing common between Goa and Savantwadi/Karwar
(SK)
and that is they all speak a common language Konkani; But there were quite a

number of differences . In Goa they revere Christ whereas in SK they
believe in
Rama, Krishna, Shiva etc. In Goa common people wear pants and shirts, in SK
they wear dhotis. In Goa they lived in small mud houses, and in a few
thatched
huts, in SK they lived mostly in huts and in a few mud houses. One could go
on and on.

But then the question arises; Is the improved superficial appearances of
Goans vs SK
entirely due to the Portuguese influence in Goa ?

One does not know. It could perhaps be due to the gloriosa missao
civilizadora
de Portugal and its Patriarch who was ably assisted by local
sacerdotes
belonging to the highest Hindu caste. Here I could introduce my humble
suggestion that it all could have been due to postal remittances of
thousands
and thousands Goans who toiled hard in the then British India and also on
board of ships.

I got two queries only to ask whose party it was..

It was the Restaurant (ForRest) Inaugural Party

Restaurant Owners: Panjim Dy. Mayor Yatin Parekh ( Dhiresh Shah)

 Inaugurated by: Babush

When: 30th Aug. 2009 with party inside and outside the restaurant blocking the
  public access/footpath

  Who were the other VIPs?
CM Digambar Kamat, Mayor Caroline Po, MLA Agnelo Fernandes, Councilor
Surendra Furtado, KA member secretary -Mr. Mrs. Pandurang Phaldesai etc etc
Source: Toi ( Goa Times Pics) 3/9/09

I am sure there were many others invitees too including ‘Patrakars’
and hence no one brought this (holding parties on public road) to the notice
of the public yet.

Looks like one lane of DB Road is reserved for the customers’ parking.
(one will find at least 3 cars parked at any givn time)

 Now, who owns Panjim?
The same fellow who thinks he owns Taleigao

All others are like his ‘munddkars’

Seen plenty at an isolated place on last Sunday.

Traditionally, there is a belief that  mushrooms blooms or appear mainly on
Sundays
and Wednesdays. Also, it is safe to eat or pluck it on the days.
However, I did notice many times, that they do appear on the above days only.

Mam or Sorop (Snake) story also goes  with it or with some type of Mushrooms.
'Rovonn' or 'Rovnnikode' words are also associated with it.

There are another type of mushroom, similar but very tiny and they would bloon
abudandtly. Again, Sunday/Wednesdays.  If one neigbour sees it, he/she will
inform all. Seen people collecting them with 'Sup' or other small baskets.
We either made chilly fry or made 'Dall' or 'Goddxem' of it.
One must only pluck or collect them on the same day of blooming as next day
they
go off (faded)

Essay by William Darymple

Published by Seagull Books
Synopsis provided by Publisher:

Located on the west coast of India along the Arabian Sea, Goa officially
became an Indian state in 1987 after nearly 500 years of Portuguese
rule. This conflict of cultures is captured by Indian photographer Prabuddha
Dasgupta in The Edge of Faith. The book’s 70 striking photographs
create an intimate portrait of the Catholic community in Goa rarely seen
before—a portrait of people torn between their fidelity to a history
of Portuguese faith and culture and their post-Independence Indian identity.
In addition, acclaimed travel-writer William Dalrymple provides
an accompanying text that explores both the history of Goa’s Catholic past
and its struggle to deal with its multi-cultural, multi-religious
present. The Edge of Faith captures Catholic Goa in a haunting, but
beautiful impasse—caught in a time warp between comforting nostalgia and a
doubt-ridden, insecure future.

About Prabuddha Das Gupta:

Prabuddha Dasgupta is a self-taught photographer who grew up in the cultural
chaos of post-colonial India. In 1996, Prabuddha Dasgupta broke a taboo by
publishing 'Women' (Viking Books), a controversial collection of portraits
and nudes of urban Indian women. With that gesture, he reinstated the nude
to its rightful place in the Indian cultural discourse; after 200 years of
Victorian morality imposed by the British colonialists had almost erased
sexuality from artistic expression... in the very home of the Kamasutra.

In the decade that followed, Dasgupta pursued a variety of photographic
projects, while unapologetically straddling the two worlds of commissioned
and artistic work, bringing to both, a bold, individualistic sensibility
that very quickly placed him in the ranks of major photographic talent in
the country.

Dasgupta's work has been exhibited internationally, both in solo and group
shows, and published in Indian, French, English, Italian and American
magazines. His second book 'Ladakh' (Viking Books), a personal exploration
of India's frontier wilderness was published in 2000 and his work is
included in many books publications including 'Nudi' (Motta Editore, Milan)
and 'India Now - New Photographic Visions' (Textuel, Paris). He is also the
recipient of many grants and awards, including the Yves Saint Laurent grant
for photography in1991, and his work is in the collections of many
individuals and institutions, like the Museo Ken Damy, Brescia, Italy, and
Galleria Carla Sozzani, Milan, Italy.

Dasgupta is represented in India by Bodhi Art and lives between New Delhi
and Goa.

About Mira Nair:

Accomplished Film Director/Writer/Producer Mira Nair was born in
Bhubaneswar, India in 1957. Educated at both Delhi University and Harvard
University, Nair began her artistic career as an actor before turning her
attention to film. She found incipient success as a documentary filmmaker,
winning awards for So Far From India and India Cabaret. In 1988, Nair’s
debut feature, Salaam Bombay!, was nominated for an Academy Award, Golden
Globe, and BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It also won the
Camera D'Or (for best first feature) and the Prix du Publique (for most
popular entry) at the Cannes Film Festival as well as 25 other international
awards.

Nair’s next film, Mississippi Masala, an interracial love story set in the
American South and Uganda, starring Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury,
won three awards at the Venice Film Festival including Best Screenplay and
The Audience Choice Award. Subsequent films include The Perez Family (with
Marisa Tomei, Anjelica Huston, Alfred Molina and Chazz Palminteri), about an
exiled Cuban family in Miami; and the sensuous Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love,
which she directed and co-wrote.

Nair directed My Own Country based on Dr. Abraham Verghese's best-selling
memoir about a young immigrant doctor dealing with the AIDS epidemic. Made
in 1998, My Own Country starred Naveen Andrews,

*This article was published in the Herald of today but I cannot read it in
the web version.. Any reasons..?? *

*We are the Church*

*By. Almir de Sousa*

Because of his intelligence and expertise in historical matters I had
certain regard for Teotonio R. De Souza. I lost it today after reading his
Article “Church in Goa: Servants, slaves and rebels”. ( Herald, 29 August,
2009)

The article is not worth of any person of certain standard much less a
Historian and Professor of Teotonio’s calibre. It is full of insinuations,
undocumented quotations and calling of names to those who oppose him. At
the end of the article I asked myself , “ Why this personal attack in the
garb of a ‘historical lecture’? Would Teotonio have a personal grudge
against the Archbishop?”, Because the whole article comes to that.

According to him all the members of the Church could be divided into three
categories: servants, slaves and rebels. ‘Slaves’ would be those who defend
the Church and attack him; ‘Rebels’ would be all those who attack the
Church. All the others would be ‘servants’. He would place himself in the
category of “rebels” and carve a glorified niche for himself together with
others like Fr.Dupuis or Fr. Bermejo. The last two may have had their own
difficulties with Vatican Authorities but they remained in the Church to
serve her with all dedication, because they did not love themselves but the
Church.

We should avoid two types of Pharisaisms: one to be in the Church, observe
all the laws and regulations to the last detail and consider ourselves as
‘ perfect ones’ and condemn all others as ‘publicans’; the other one is of
those who for reasons of their own opted to be outside the Church but
consider themselves and boast as the ‘perfect ones’ and call the ones who
are still in the Church ‘slaves or chamchas’. Both equally wrong and to be
condemned.

The article of Teotonio is full of insinuations: regarding the ”loyal
servants of the Church in Goa, both clergy and laity,” belonging to
“dominant castes” of “the finance and other administrative
committees” including
the “relatives of priests” and “ of the archbishop”.

He seems to be basing his article on hearsay and quotes the opinion of one
person as if that opinion was sacramental and infallible: Just two examples:

1. *“Someone even mentioned the Bishop’s pastoral visits as useless
exercise…”* It may be true, there are always a few who will not do
anything themselves and whatever others do will find as “useless exercise”.
So what to conclude from there? Should the Bishop stop his pastoral visits?
And what about all others, hundreds of them, who have exactly the opposite
view? I can quote for one: in my Parish a well reputed Teacher, housewife and
Mother of three children, after the pastoral visit of the Archbishop ,told
me that she had attended all the talks of the Archbishop and that she did
not feel bored at all on the contrary they were of great help to her
personal and family life. She is not a ‘chamcha’ neither she teaches in a
Catholic School. This is just one example.

2. Again Teotonio quotes “some parishioners of the new Porvorim
parish” who “approached” him during his “brief stay in Goa” and “revealed
their discontent over the lack of transparency and accountability of the
generous funds collected from the parishioners for extending the parish
residence”. Instead of going to the press with such insinuations would it
not be better if he had sought clarification directly from the Parish
Priest of Porvorim, who happens to be his co-villager? For that matter how
would Teotonio like if I had written to the Papers saying that “someone has
approached me” and revealed that Teotonio had mismanaged the Funds of
the Xavier
Centre of Historical Research when he was at the helm of that Centre?

It looks that Teotonio and a few like him want to divide the Church in Goa in
two classes: Priests and Laity and incite the Laity against the Clergy.

The picture of the Church given by Teotonio is all wrong. There are no
“Servants, slaves and rebels” in the Church . There are sons and daughters
in the Church. The Church is the Body of Christ and we, the Bishops, Priests
and Laity are the members of this Body; the Church is the People of God and
we all are this people, we belong to the Church, *we are the Church.*

Though the Church is founded by Christ yet it is human and consists of human
members. These human members, Pope, Bishops, Priests and Laity, are

GRAF presents 'World Konkani Day' in Mumbai

The 17th WKD was celebrated by GRAF in Association with Konkani association,
Mumbai on 30th August 2009 at Antonio D'Souza High school hall.

The objective of this celebration was to highlight the significance of this
day -the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th schedule of the Indian
constitution.

It was also an opportunity to display the rich heritage of Konkani in the
cultural programme that was put up for the occasion. The traditional
dekhnni, Mando and the Fugddi brought forth the rich tradition of the
Konkan, particularly Goa. It was nostalgic for the older folks present and
an opportunity for the younger generation particularly of Mumbai to have a
peek of what Konkan culture is all about.

The skit Ghotallo was a sort of suspense with a lot of humor. The audience
enjoyed every bit of action particularly the dialogues.

GRAF promotes Konkani in big way. Besides the cultural programmes, there
were literary competitions conducted during the year. WKD'09 was a big
opportunity to honor and recognize the winners with rewards. The following
were the winnersof Konkani literary awards:

In Konkani essay writing: Jose Silveira - first Prize and Alisha D'Costa -
consolation Prize.

In Konkani short story writing: Milton Rodrigues, first prize and Savio D'Silva
second prize.

In Konkani one act play writing: Cyril D Fernandes - first prize and Mr
Marcos Gonsalves second prize.

The chief guest also released GRAF's short story book entitled 'Kothamall'
featuring 12 short stories of 12 renowned writers on the occasion.

Renowned Konkanit tiatrist Titta Pretto, Betty Fernandes and Prem Kumar
(posthumously) were felicitated by the Bahrain Goans on the occasion.

The Goan Review's 'Personality of the year 2008-09 was awarded to Mr. Felix
Dias.

GRAF also felicitated three Konkani personalities who have done yeoman
service to the cause of Konkani. Mr Lawrence D'Souza, Kamani, Konkani
activist and Literateur

Mr Baptist D'Souza (Jack of all stalls ) for promoting Konkani

And a Konkani enthusiast Mr Joe de Verna who regularly writes letter to the
editor in Konkani periodicals.

President of GRAF- Fausto V. da Costa in his welcome address stressed on the
importance of the unity of all Konkani speaking people and preserving the
rich heritage of Konkanis for posterity. The chief guest Fr Francis Ramesh,
director of Kalangan called upon the gathering to use their mother tongue
Konkani and spread it among the new generation by speaking the language.
Entrepreneur and renowned Banker Mr. John D'Silva graced the occasion as the
guest of honour.

In the keynote address of the day, Mr. Lawrence D'Souza, Kamani highlighted
the rich treasures of the Konkani language and the progress it has made so
far.

The cultural programme was followed by dancing sessions in which the
gathering took part enthusiastically and took away a number of spot prizes.

All in all this WKD , for all the people attending the function , about 300
people, was a day of learning the significance of WKD. Besides this everyone
enjoyed the display of the rich Konkan heritage and culture. Last but not
the least the delicious Konkan culinary treat was enjoyed by all. (Renato
Pereira)

It is not by leaving the Church and then throwing stones at her that we
shall reform the

Church it is by remaining in the Church, suffering with and within the

My response to him was:
Fr., I know the preferences of the people all too well. But we have to

I did meet him again at the 'Door Darshan Kendra', Panjim, when the

A slightly-edited note of what I recently posted to the GoaWriters
group, in response to a question of some of my favourite Goa-related
books.

* Goan Literature: A Modern Reader. Peter Nazareth (ed)
* Of umbrellas, goddesses dreams. Essays on Goa by Robert S. Newman
* Between Empires, Rochelle Pinto
* A History Of Konkani Literature: Manoharrai Sardessai
* Domnic's Goa by Domnic Fernandes
* Tivolem by Victor Rangel-Ribeiro
* Goa a Daughter's Story by Maria Aurora Couto
* Parmal, past and present issues. Prava Rai, ed.
* Ethnography of Goa, Daman and Diu Tr: MA Couto. AB De Braganca Pereira
* Fish, Curry and Rice. Claude Alvares (ed)
* Profile of Eminent Goans. J. Clement Vaz
* Sorrowing Lies My Land. Lambert Mascarenhas.
* The Transforming of Goa. Norman Dantas (ed)
* Sinners and Saints: The successors of Vasco Da Gama. Sanjay Subrahmanyam
* The General is Up. Peter Nazareth
* Goa Remembered: Vignettes of Fading Traditions. Agnelo Pereira
* Reflected in Water: Writings on Goa.  Jerry Pinto (ed)
* Goa in the 20th Century. Pius Malekandathil (ed)/Remy Dias

Check the Goa-books sections at http://www.goabooks.com (Broadway) or
http://www.otherindiabookstore.com (OIBS, Mapusa). They have fairly
elaborate lists of Goa-related (mostly English focussed)
books-in-print available with them. For obvious reasons, books are
more affordable if purchased (in Rupee prices) in Goa itself.

And some more additional details:

Manoharrai Sardessai's Sahitya Akademi-published book is a steal at Rs
160. You can find part of the book free for an online read at Google
books:
http://books.google.com/books?id=1YILeUD_oZUCprintsec=frontcover#v=onepageq=f=false

The General is Up is one of the Goa-related books hidden away at the
P. Lal-run Writer's Workshop of Kolkata. Waiting to be bought and
stocked for sale in Goa itself! Available at 25% discount, cash down
for wholesalers, but the freight has to be borne by the buyer, Lal
told me recently. I think the OIBS at Mapusa also has Peter Nazareth.

When Agnelo Pereira's hb book was published nearly a decade ago, I
thought it was a bit overpriced at Rs 300. Now it's good value for
money. Fascinating illustrations of the Goa that was in the
yesteryears. It's available at the OIBS too.

Goa in the 20th century, another good book (has essays on Emissora de
Goa and even the student movement of the 1970s-1990s) can be got from
the Institute Menezes Braganza. I don't know why institutions simply
hand over the job of book-selling... to booksellers!

PS: This list is incomplete. Looking for the list of other people's
favourites too I have also kept out of the list some of the books
which I have been involved with (except Domnic's Goa and Jerry
Pinto's) for obvious reasons

We wish Agnelo Fernandes, the MLA from the Calangute Constituency and a

pages of all the newspapers entirely covered-up with his photographs on his
very shortly coming 50th. Birthday. The Goa's newspaperwallas should be

Agnelo, it seems has turned out to be the GOD of the people oc the Calangute

Besides, unlike the needs of the God's people, the needs of Agnelo's people

Almir de Sousa's response may be read as response to the following
column of mine:

http://bit.ly/19Jtgp

Is Almir de Sousa the veteran priest in Ucassaim? There was no need to hide
the clerical prefix. It is also strange that he should identify me with
just one role, as if a historian or a professor cannot have other
social functions to perform!

He failed to respond to most questions raised. Questions raised just
by one or few persons do not become less valid or relevant than
questions raised by a crowd. Floriano's lone voice is less relevant than of
the large parties? But Floriano saw Fr. Almir's logic differently!

And there is the oft repeated clerical defence of presenting the
church as a body of sinners and liable to make mistakes! Are the
priests any privileged sinners and beyond correction as any normal
citizen?

Almir seems to read Herald only when it suits him. The classification of
servants and rebels was used by Dr. F.E. Noronha in the concluding
para of his Opinion column in Herald. Almir attributes the originality to me
and the whole harangue follows! Also several other conclusions he draws are
emotional and non sequitur.

Wonder what Goanetters think of the only Catholic-approved method of
birth-control (which is called natural family planning).

Was just reading today that three Goans -- Milagres Pereira, Valentine
Coelho and Anna Coelho -- received awards at the Couple to Couple
League International Convention at North Carolina USA a few months
ago.

Quote: Vally Anna Coelho are the Co-Directors of the Couple to
Couple League of India. They have a pro-life institute called
'Be-Attitudes' at Porvorim, Goa. They promote Natural Family PLanning,
an abstinence-based birth regulation method -- that is highly
effective, healthy and has no side effects -- through their
involvement in Marriage Encounter and Engaged Encounter. They also
conduct Theology of the Body programs, La Leche League meetings tos
upport breastfeeding mothers, childbirth education classes, chastity
programmes in schools and colleges and fertility awareness classes.
Closequote. (Renewal, Nov 16-30, 2008.)

Of course it's fine to find some option that fits into our worldview
(religious, political or whatever). But I wonder about how effective
this approach is, and also on the other hand the pressures on anyone
taking such a stand in a world where the pressures of modernism and
science are all that strong... FN

It is not by leaving the Church and then throwing stones at her that we
 shall reform the
Church it is by remaining in the Church, suffering with and within the
Church, maybe even being a ‘rebel’ but always within the Church that we
 shall reform the Church.

Well said that, Fr. Almir de Souza, especially the part maybe even being
a rebel, but always within the Church

I don't know ( from the name) if Fr. Almir, PP of Ucassaim Church is the

handed-over to the Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, regarding the
upkeep of the city and market of Mapusa by the MAPUSA NAGRIKANCHO EKVOTT.

And this is what he had confided in me
You did well to contest the Assembly elections (2007) from Aldona. But you
must realise that you can never get elected
 My response to him was:
Fr., I know the preferences of the people all too well. But we have to
chip-in as rebels. Otherwise it will be as if no one is interested in good
 governance

I did meet him again at the 'Door Darshan Kendra', Panjim, when the

Dear Floriano,

I keep telling people that BJP stands for - 'BRING JESUS TO THE
PEOPLE'...UNLESS THE GRAIN OF WHEAT DIES HOW CAN this come to
pass?

Simply put - 'What ones sows so shall one reap'.
Many may not believe  - but God does throw a spanner in such organization;
that you will find nuts and bolts fling around. Only girdle yourself stay
afar, watching from a distance how the situation evolves; ready to slay the
dragon in one stroke. I can't use the other term it may offend our
non-Catholic brothers. I.T Naidu from Andhra suffered the same fate when he
could have voted out Modi when Vajpayee was the P.M. He adopted Pontius
Pilots posture and washed his hands - he had the key to bring down Vajpayee,
but he was diffident when spoken to by me. Now that's history sir. Now let's
see how things crystallize in the political arena for the merry knights of
Hinduvata.

The perspective we should adopt is not of anger and bitterness but - ' We
shall choose the Time , Moment and Place to Strike to demolish these myths
and lies perpetuated by these people. Why was Advani so smug about the Ram
Sena'?

Dear Col.,

Thank you for saying what you have said and thank you for the
acknowledgement.
The Loh Purush has at last 'melted'
This melt is a lot different than the melt of the Silver idols and artifacts

that were lovingly gifted to him (Advani) during the Rath/Ram Yatras by
gullible people, of course, for no fault of theirs. This Loh Purush had
these melted in Mumbai to turn these into cooking utensils for his home.
This is according to none other than his own daughter-in-law who was up in
arms against this mad-man but he was successful in appeasing her afterall,
just like he did the same with Liberhan Commission. The Commission report
was timed in such a way (after 17 long years) by the time it was released,
he expected to be sitting on the PM's chair. This Jako must go to jail, even

if it is a token one day affair for the demolition of the Babri Masjid. 'Jo

karne Gaye, who karke ayem' . These are his words according to his
daughter-in-law. And he has the cheek to deny his involvement in the
demolition.

I had seen through this evil person a long time ago. When Manohar Parrikar's

brother Audhut told me that I should consider joining the BJP ( circa
1993/4), as a good friend of course, I had said 'why not'? But there was one

condition I had told him. Advani must be shut inside Tihar Jail. He had
never pursued this or any other topic with me after this.

I have openly declared that if Advani became India's Prime Minister, I,
floriano lobo, would spit on his face if I got the chance. And I would do it

too.

You don't melt Gods that are gifted to you. Gods melts you if you did.
This has come to pass with Advani. He has been MELTED.

Col, we must meet some day to exchange a few pleasantries.

 Dear Mr.Floriano Lobo ,

you have aptly described the BJP Cobra/ wolf - L.K.Advani whose only
dream was to sit in the PMs chair at any cost - even at the cost of
innocent lives . We cannot forget the lives lost at the time of his
infamous Rath - yatras that were purposely taken through muslim areas (
even those areas that had a history of communal harmony had witnessed
their first disturbances ) to disturb the peaceful fabric of the country.
We cannot forget the tears in the eyes of innocent women and children and
even scared boys that cried like babies whenever we tookout flag-marches -

how they pleaded with us for peace .

The destruction of the Babri - Masjid was instigated by Advani and the
resulting riots and bomb blasts were all due to his passion - nay not for
the betterment of the country and its countrymen but to sit in the PMs
 chair.

The world has seen the fall of greatest dictators like Idi Amin Dada,

The narrator in the documentary stresses cosmopolitan repeatedly, when
describing Bombay.  Bal Thackeray, that cosmo spelling of his name aside, had
warned against the use of the word, in what was a near edict.  Parsees get
special mention in the film, for many of the same reasons that would later
attract resentful notice and actions by the  Maratha majority. We were a little
further down on that feeding chain.
In a book I just brought home, Lucette Lagnado writes about the fears
expressed by Cairo's prosperous Jews for their future, in  a post-colonial
Egypt, without the privileges offered by 'les Anglais'.  Many of us wear
blinders that help us deny the reality of the day, to produce the destructive
Bernado-Macao circus phenomenon we know on Goanet.

Sorry, S Parra is not the brother of Francis de Parra. They are from one

Dear Alfred Chacha,

We are in an age where mere Saints will not do. To get elected one has to be

We wish Agnelo Fernandes, the MLA from the Calangute Constituency and a

pages of all the newspapers entirely covered-up with his photographs on
his

watering in the mouths about the killing that they will be making for
themselves.

Agnelo, it seems has turned out to be the GOD of the people oc the

Besides, unlike the needs of the God's people, the needs of Agnelo's

may not be the entirely 'legal' and therefore the need for Agnelo to
consider himself as their God Almighty.

Cheers to Agnelo for sporting a 'halo' so far reserved for GODs only.

Anyway, you sound very familiar to me.

I was surprised the issue was twisted and distorted in the Goanet
discussions to suit individual agenda. The Navhind Times reported under that
title the release of Medieval Goa on 21st August, and to my personal protest
with the journalist R. Raikar who interviewed me, he said that the title was
decided by the Editor and not by him.
My reference in the Concluding Chapter of the book is to a Jesuit report of
the end of the 17th century in Salcete, describing how the great majority of
the natives lived on bare sustenance. I sought to present this contrast at
the end of two centuries of the Portuguese which are described in tourish
brochure histories of Goa as Golden Goa, an expression popularised by the
art historians.
There was no idea of writing against the Portuguese as someone called
Hennrique Salles da Fonseca who pops up occasionally on Goanet tried say in
his intervention in the debate. Also his accusation that the University in
Portugal is paying me goes to show that the Universities in Portugal have
better standards of reesearch than what some such pseudo-patriots of
Portugal wish to promote. Besides, the recognition of research nowadays is
not the privilege of any one country and its political predilections.
I only wish the debate does not extend unduly my conclusions about 17th
century to later periods and more modern times. YI have my other writings
for the more recent periods and those could be quoted, but not Medieval Goa.

Perhaps, its because deep down they are very, very angry people -- and I
include the Christians too. An inchoate emotional amalgam of skewed logic,
power brokering, a reversal of colonialism, to list a few of their core
strengths. Essentially learning the worst from the cultures that they have
heard of. Pretty much the whole lot. Success is measured in terms
incomprehensible to most of us. They simply refuse to see humanity in
anything. Or they cannot see beyond their families. They refuse to see that
as one puts ones shoulder behind someone, and lifts them up -- that others
in seeing ones spirit, are drawn closer to you.

One way of describe such a manner of lived reality / existence is being,
vervetish -- after the vervet, a monkey species -- cercopithecus aethiops
pygerythrus. They do not try to be like the striped-palm squirrel. Remember
Lankeswar -- and the squirrel who helped Rama and the Vanara Sena at Adi
bridge? Funabulus palmarum. They cannot be like that squirrel offering its
mite. They cannot do it. They simply cannot include in their moral package a
dose of egalitarianism, and it horrifies me to even say it — it would take
them to a whole different level. They would be beloved. No question about
it. As the Marathi proverb says, jitiachi khod mela shivai zat nay/nahin.

Forget the maya in lan/m in Lanka -- ten soddunuch di, bhai mar hin kalpana,

Thanks Lapit,

But it is still not clear who gave the ‘Melody King ‘ title to Lawry.
Could it be Menezes Dramatic Troupe- members themselves?

There can be so many princes but usually there is only one King.

One cannot takes the King’s place automatically upon the death of the King.

It’s not something like Indra Gandhi dies and Rajiv takes over or Rajiv dies
and Sonia takes over.

Lawry may be a King of other sorts but not the ‘Melody King’.

There should not be hurry to fill up the vacant post.

It’s not something like when one CM dies in the plane Crash, the next day
another one become a CM.

Let there be no Melody King for now.

I am not saying, after Late Alfred Rose, no one should take his title ‘Melody
King’ but at least for now , there is no one worth
becoming Melody King.

Lawry may be a best singer or one of the Melody Princes but definitely
not the Melody King, at least not yet.

I can agree with the titles like Man of thousand Faces, Dream Girl,
Tragedy Queen, Tragedy King, Comedy Queen, Melody Prince,
Charlie Chaplin, Master Character etc but not the Melody King.

Excerpt:

The other day CTV reported the astonishing statistic that in the whole of
Canada there are just 33 sperm donors. That seems awfully low for a nation of
30 million people. Three sperm donors per province plus one per territory?
Surely we can do better than that. All hands on deck!

Ah, but it’s not as simple as that. Apparently, the 2004 Assisted Human
Reproduction Act makes it illegal to pay donors for sperm. I mean, it wasn’t
even the usual Canadian Wheat Board-type racket whereby you’d only be able to
sell your seed to the Canadian Sperm Board at a price agreed upon by
representatives of the federal-provincial Semen Commissions. Instead, they just
nixed the whole deal, and, once Johnny Canuck found out he wasn’t going to be
remunerated, virtually the entire supply dried up.

As a result, this once proud Dominion now has to import sperm. According to
CTV, 80 per cent of Canadian women who conceive through donor sperm are getting
it from the United States, mainly from men in Georgia and northern Florida.
Canada’s future is now in American hands.

It continues to amaze me that people still advocate government run health care
systems for the US after all the horror stories coming out of old Blighty and
Canada.  Is this a misery loves company attitude or are the residents ignorant
of what's going on under their very noses?  Make up your own minds.

Excerpt:

Patients in Health Service hospitals are far more likely to go hungry than
criminals in jail, scientists warned yesterday.

They say frail and elderly patients do not get the help they need with meals,
and nobody checks whether they get enough to eat.

Despite years of Government promises to tackle poor hospital nutrition, food
still arrives cold, and patients often miss out because meal times clash with
tests and operations.

[Goanet] Important information for Goan cancer patients

Here is some important information regarding cancer that Goans and Goanetters
should know because cancer is a serious disease that affects the lives of many
Goans. Objective evidence obtained by rational and empirical research has
shown that cancer is permanently curable if treated as early as possible and
proper modern scientific medical treatment sought, without relying on
anecdotes, gossip, false beliefs and fairy tales.

By conducting painstaking and rigorous scientific research over the past decade
or so, genuine cancer physicians and epidemiologists, prominent among whom is
Prof. Hermann Brenner of Heidelberg, have determined that the permanent cure
rate for all common solid cancers is 38% to 59% in women and 21% to 47% in men.
For specific common cancers the cure rates are as follows:

Breast cancer - 55% to 73%
Prostate cancer - 14% to 63%
Colon and rectum cancer - 25% to 49%
Stomach cancer - 9% to 30%
Lung cancer - 4% to 13%

These cure rates were calculated by a European Working Group of 168 scientists,
including Brenner, by studying registry data from hundreds of thousands of
patients in 18 countries of Europe. If anybody wants to read this paper
published just 4 months ago, I would be happy to send you a copy. Here's the

perspective. Eur J Cancer 45(6): 1067-79.

I would also be happy to provide data on other cancers, and explain how cure
rates are calculated. It should be a good exercise to counter the bogus
information disseminated through this public forum.

Cheers,

Santosh
