GBBN seems to be coming soon. I hear it is something like 5 GB connectivity?

I would like to know more details about this, if available. For instance,
can consumers/ businesses avail of this?

Also, what is this software that will be used by police stations?
Specifically, who has developed this?

If successful, we are going to be in for some good times!!!

Be Careful of Agents propogating the Hidden Agenda on GOANET

I have been off Goanet for a while now. I feel the frontbenchers out there have
literally created a holiganised approach and shout down any good point being
raised, and so also good writers – God help the voice if it tries to expose
hidden agendas of several vested interests that have infiltrated into the
system and are trying to divide Goa.
However, Goanet has had the privilege of having some real sensible writers…who
make a point unbiased. But as is the case mostly, there are several empty
vessels who try to label them as the biggest fools and bigots, thereby exposing
the hollowness of their own minds.
One such source (who is a master of fake ids and all fake propaganda, and is a
champion of ‘crying wolf’) even links ids of people and labels the original as
fake writers only to try and run them down in unprintable language – which
largely shows the integrity of such a source, his background and his core group
which he is associated with.
In the recent past eminent personalities like Dr Oscar Rebello, Selma Carvalho,
Fredrick Noronha, Alfred Tavares… and the list is endless… have been targeted
and maligned.
The Goans in Goa and in the diaspora are well aware of who is behind such
fanaticism.
Then there is a group who retorts to writing derogatory mails and clandestinely
picks up ids from Goanet and mails them such thrash.
There have also been attempts to push viruses in my mailbox through various
fake ids, dummy writers claiming to be from Goa trying to coax me to write
against the establishment and also various so called intellectuals trying to
guide one to promote the hidden agenda. On closer scrutiny, it was established
that such persons never existed, raising a big doubt about the man cowardly
hiding behind the mask.
Recently, several friends of mine forwarded me mails form one source that
appeared on Goanet. And I was neither shocked nor surprised; in fact I was
happy – very early in life I had learnt that one can’t expect mangoes from a
coconut tree.
Those who lie down with the dogs, wake up with fleas on them.
Before making such prejudiced judgments, I wish the empty source should have
the guts to write to the people how he has offered himself (for a price or free
of cost) to be used to push the hidden agenda, how he has tried to pour trash
in people’s ids (including mine), how he has been exposed by me all through and
that has provoked his ageing anger and I had the gall to byline all those
posts.
I have been open in my writings – from a leader of opposition to the chief
minister – I as a journalist and a brave Goan son of the soil, has had what it
takes to write my name against any mail, in praise of or critical of the
system. So any creature belonging to the human fraternity would use a little of
his or her brains (if it has any) and know the answer to the recent accusation.
But I understand the pangs of being exposed and bravely countered can be fatal
on any such creatures. It can burn them!
This is not a clarification, I don’t owe any to anyone, but trying to let all
my friends on Goanet and in Goa, UAE and the world over that such attempts to
malign someone who have been doing his bit for Goa do not effect me,
nonetheless they make people like me more bold and brave to encounter these
Johny-come-latelies.
Thanks to all fellow Goans who wrote back to me. I am glad I have such good
friends in you all.

Cedric Da Costa

I wonder if there is a legal recourse here.

In India, deaths due to negligence abound. Right from the Upahaar cinema

It would be good if we can set a precedent here and book the Electricity

Indeed, it is a wonder that more people dont get electrocuted.  Actually, I
suspect that many do, but it is seldom if ever reported.
I feel sorry for the poor lineman who has to carry out repairs wearing only
chappals and no protective gear or gloves, especially during the rains.  I
still see the lineman pushing his bicycle with a bamboo ladder attached to
repair street lights.  Since I live off the beaten path, when he comes to
repair the street light near my house, he asks to borrow my bamboo ladder.
.
Especially in the rains, one sees sodden tree branches brushing against live
electrical lines
sometimes resulting in sparks. Who do we blame ? The poor electrical linemen,
his bosses or the politicians who control the pursestrings ?  One questions
whether India will ever reach the status of a world power when for decades
there are no improvements at the
local level.

G'BYE GOA: GOANS WORLDWIDE
By Valmiki Faleiro

The August 23 column on Goan emigration worldwide elicited, expectedly, many
responses. I'll share as many as this space provides, before we turn over to
the story
of in-migration into Goa.

Fernando do Rego of Panjim, retired Dy. Director of Agriculture, often rejoins
with off-
beat comment. To my tongue-in-cheek line, there would be no place on earth
where
a Goan didn't piss, he joined in: Where is God? He is everywhere. But before
him, a
Goan was already there!

Rego told of his friend touring Iceland. Seated in his hotel lounge sipping a
drink, a
lady approached and, after courtesies, sat next to him. After some drinks, she
got
cozy and offered him her services. He casually asked her from where she was. Her
reply: Goa. Imagine a Goan prostitute warming up in a land of ice!

Fernandobab also pointed out I had forgotten Goans in Trinidad and Tobago (TT),
where our Banalcar poet, Berardo Pinto Pereira lived and his family still
does. An
unintended omission. Berardo's widow, Dr. Lexley Pinto Pereira, teaches at a
medical university in St. Augustine-Trinidad and lives there with her family.

Thanks to another friend, Merwyn Lobo in Canada, Mabel de Souza Pooran who
lives in Port of Spain wrote, Hey, I am Goan to the bone, and I've lived in
TT since
1979! There is a scattering of Goans here. Austin Trinidade born in Kenya was
until
recently Chief Medical Officer of San Fernando Hospital in Trinidad.

Anjuna-rooted, Pune-bred Placido D'Souza, a career diplomat, now retired in the
USA, was India's Ambassador in two dozen countries or more. Wrote he, An update
on Valmiki's article which I read with interest. As India's High Commissioner to
TT,
concurrently accredited to eight countries and three territories in the
Caribbean, I
presented credentials in Barbados, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts
Nevis, Saint Lucia, Dominica Antigua and Barbuda (apart from TT), and
Letters of
Credence in the British territories of Anguilla, Montserrat and Turks Caicos
Islands.
The only country to which I did not present credentials was Grenada, for
reasons that
we need not go into. In TT, I ran into a Goan Menezes family; in Saint Lucia,
the
head of Health Services was a D'Souza; in Turks Caicos Islands, the British
governor's wife was a Goan from Dar-es-Salaam. As Ambassador to Zaire, also
accredited to Congo (Brazzaville), Central African Republic, Gabon and
Equatorial
Guinea, I met Goans all over.

Don't know how, but I also missed Switzerland. Wrote Bernardo de Sousa from
Geneva, There are Goans in Switzerland, so your list now increases to 92.
(Actually
93, dear Bernardo, after TT!)

Ethiopia was included, and Gabriel de Figueiredo now settled in Australia (son
of the
famed 20th century Goan music Maestro, Antonio de Figueiredo), added at Goanet
(www.goanet.org): One of my colleagues from the Brazilian Naval Commission in
Europe, now living in Sao Paulo, once told me that her great-grandfather was a
Goan
from Ethiopia...

Vivian DSouza, a banker who retired in the USA but returned to his native
Socorro
said, Must tell you there are several Goans still living in Zanzibar including
the
illustrious Wolfango Dourado who at one time was Attorney General of Zanzibar.
I returned last month from Zanzibar and spoke to several Goans who live there.

In TT, there is a Goan girl married to a Trinidadian of Indian origin, Mabel
de
Souza, now Pooran. Don't know of any Goans still in Somalia, but while it was
still
British Somalia, P.P. Mascarenhas worked for Barclays Bank in Mogadishu. I later
worked under him in Tanzania and often heard his stories about times in
Mogadishu.
I met a Goan named Frances DeSales, now in the USA, who once lived in Kabul and
worked for the American Embassy there.

At Goanet again, Wilson Soares sought details of any Goan in Panama. Roney
Viegas sought to know if the largest expatriate Goan community was in
Mississauga.
Alfred de Tavares in Stockholm told him he believed the densest conglomeration
of
Goans (with all relevant derivatives of Goaness) was in Portugal. Steve
Pereira
met some Goans working in Shenzhen (mainland China), and one from Pilerne in
Tanggu-Tianjin. Bernado Colaco in Macau (ok, baba, now China) said he found a
Goan in Guangdong, making Sarapatel/Sorpotel! (ENDS)

The above article appeared in the Herald, Goa, edition of September 6, 2009

THE FORGOTTEN TRIBE – MHAR – Part 2

Generally, human nature is
“bodmas” (ungrateful). We usually tend to forget the good

done to us by fellow humans. The
Mhar community has done a lot for which we should

be grateful.

Here are some of their services
without which life in those days would be difficult.

KURPONN

Today, we have stainless steel
strainers to strain rice but in the days of yore almost

everyone strained rice with the
help of a “kurponn” (a round bamboo-woven plate used to

support the buddkulo while
straining rice water.)

Once the rice was cooked, the
xitacho buddkulo (rice pot) was tilted and “nis” (rice

water) removed. A kurponn was
placed on a “mandd” (a round flat wooden lid with a

small handle) and then both these
were placed on the opening of the buddkulo with the

kurponn on the inside.

The buddkulo was then tilted and
placed in a slanting position on a “konnfo” (a 4-legged

rectangular wooden stand), thus
enabling the remaining nis
to fall into a poop-shaped

earthen container, also known as
konnfo; sometimes a small kodem (earthen basin) was

also used to catch the falling nis.

Do you remember the good old
saying “Tempa pormonnem mathear kurponnem?”

(Keeping pace with the times?)
The last word is derived from the word “kurponn”, which

was available in different sizes.

Were these not intelligent
people? I thank the Mhar community for giving us the kurponn

to strain rice.

DALI

Today, we sleep on a single,
double, king and queen size beds and use soft/hard

mattresses and also use different
size quilts. In the past, most Goans, except, of course,

most bhattkars, slept on a cow
dung floor on a ‘dali’ (bamboo-woven mat), which was

fabricated by none other than our
Mhar community.

Just like a mattress, a dali came
in different sizes – single, double, large and extra large.

People mostly slept on it
directly but some spread a cloth sheet to minimize the

discomfort from its roughness.

When we woke up in the morning, a
dali was rolled up and kept in a corner of the house.

If several “dalieo” (mats) were
used, they were placed on each other and bundled up into

a roll; a “sumbacho kuddko”
(piece of coir rope) was tied in the middle of the roll to

prevent the “dalieo” from
unwrapping.

Whenever a big occasion like a
bhikareanchem jevonn or a wedding took place, the

randpinni (female cooks) made use
of a dali.

Rice was cooked in an anddo or
caldron and it was emptied with the help of a large brass

ladle which had holes. With every
scoop, rice got strained. Strained rice was emptied on a

dobrad-dali (bamboo-mat meant for
two people) until a heap was formed. Per tradition,

the randpinni then planted a
crucifix on the peak of the rice heap.

According to a Goan custom, prior
to a newly wedded couple’s entrance in the

groom’s/bride’s house, a dali is
spread out below the orator or altar in the home and it is

covered with a bed sheet and two
cushions are placed on it.

“Novreachi maim” (groom’s mother)
leads the couple straight to the dali and makes them

kneel on cushions. The village
mestir then sings the ‘Tedeum Laudamus’ accompanied

by the band. This formality is
called “vor bhitor kaddop” (bride groom’s entrance in

the new house.)

In the olden days, people
celebrated their honeymoons at home on a dali. If in the feat of

excitement, the couple forgot to
place a cloth sheet on the dali, after the honeymoon was

over, with profuse sweating, the
groom felt a burning sensation on his knees.

The next day, when people noticed
bruises on his knees, they couldn’t resist asking him:

“Kitem re Pedru, rati dimbieo
zorovn kam’ korchem poddlem?” What Pedru, did you

have to work hard on your knees
last night?) The word ‘honeymoon’ was hardly heard of

then. It’s not only common now
but the honeymoon itself has become very cheap.

When a person dies, his/her body
is now kept on a table. In the past, a dead person’s body

was placed on the floor on a dali
in the entrance of a house.

Spreading out of a dali is called
“dali antrunk.” There is an old Konkani saying: “Anturna

pormonnem paem soddche.” (Stretch
yourself according to [the size of] bedding.) In the

past, the main bedding was a
dali; hence, it was applicable to dali.

Dalieo used on a daily basis were
washed with soap and water every 3-4 months and

dried in the sun, except during
the monsoon season.

Don’t you think we should be
grateful to the Mhar community

I, too, hold with Jeevan.

The coconut-country derivation.

Margao-region being so near the beach belt has sandy sub-ideal for
coconut growing and is, indeed, surrounded by thick, luscious orchards
of coconuts...

If derived from the 'mhar' theory, it begs the question why this people
would conglomerate in that area at all.

These ittinerant suppliers of everyday needed household items tend to
move where their services are required and manufacture the commissioned
articles in situ...

The area that became Margao of latter times was then, relatively far away
from nearest setteld communities thus hardly a lokely place for the workers
in bamboo, leather materials and carry them six-ten miles...

BTW Domnic, was the Cyril de Sousa mentioned in your grand book, your grand
opus, the same as worked for years, in a very respected position, for Air India
at Frankfurt.

If so we became great friends, introduced to him his great pal Cumpar,
Mariano Pereira, by Willy, in the eighties...Is he no more with us?

We lost contact since some years back, though Mariano I have resumed it
recently.

It could be from two words 'Maad' (Coconut) and 'Ganv' (village)
i.e. village of coconuts from 'Madgaon', as I guess 'Margaon' is of
 recent origin.

The villagers of Colomba
on Saturday gheraod the official of forest department when they along
the with officials of the mine owner came to inspect the forest land at Colomba
to divert the same for  mining purpose.

That soon after getting the news that officials from  forest department headed
by Conservator of
Forest Delhi Cadet Shri Yogesh  , South Goa
Deputy Conservator of forest M.K. Shambu, Range Forest Officer Raghunath
Mashelker,  Deputy Conservator of Forest
mining shri Carvalho , other forest survey officials along with mine owner
officials
are  inspecting forest land under survey
No.12 to divert the same  for mining
purpose a large number of villagers headed by Rama Velip gathered at the site.
The villagers stopped the officials from inspecting the site and  did not allow
them to proceed but  only when they got the  assurance from the officials  that
they have not come to divert the forest
land to mining purpose .

Earlier the  villagers
accused the officials of forest department particularly the officials from Delhi
Cadete of being part to sell the government forest land to mining company  for
a price. The villagers brought to the
notice of the officials the assurance given by central Forest and Environment
Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh when he visited Goa
that no forest land will be diverted for mining purpose.

It is learnt that the officials of the forest department are
planning to divert 60 hectors of  rich
government forestland under survey No.12 of Colomba village in favour of mine
owner V.G. Mehta who claims of  having
mining lease under No.41/53 in the said survey holding .

The villagers informed herald  that that more than 50 houses  and large track
of agricultural, Kulagers land
comes with the said mining lease under number 41/53 and if the forest is
diverted and mining is started than their entire village will be wipe out .
Villagers Rama Velip informed the forest officials from Delhi Cadet that
because of forest on the top of the hill there is water at the low lying are and
because of water they are residing over there.

All the villagers forcefully  brought to the notice of the officials including
the official from Delhi cadet  that the
forest trees existing in the forest area are not maintained by them and even if
the forest department  gave permission to
the mining company to cut trees any of the tree and for that purpose they will
do whatever they can.

Speaking to herald Rama Velip one of the main activist from
the village informed that  the main aim
of  Goa government
in  delaying the implementation of Forest
Right Act 2006  is  to deprive the tribals and other forest
dwellers of the forest right so as to get it a free hand to divert forest land
to mining companies for kickback.

The villagers informed that,  so far their  agitation against mining are
peaceful, but  now the way the thing of diverting forest land
to mining purpose and thus endanger the  very existence of their life time has
come  to be aggressive.

This is a clarification regarding my earlier post where I wrote Whilst

I thought the article was quite interesting.

Tony D'Souza has written an entertaining novel and one sort of expects that
the research is accurate in a book published by a reputed publisher. But not
so as can be seen in articles like

http://lotusreads.blogspot.com/2008/03/konkans-by-tony-dsouza.html

Others who also swallowed this spurious research includes:

However I should have but did not remember the correspondence in
http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg22932.html Dr,
Teotonio De Souza reminded me. It is not so east to remember someone else's
concerns.

Well, well. I had a similar experience, only that, being an Australian citizen
I need a visa everytime I want to travel to Goa.

Last time, they gave me visa with my wife's name on my visa. When I gave it for
correction to the third-part visa services (which the Indian authrorites have
now engaged in many parts of the world), the passport was mislaid, and then
found when I personally went to the consulate after some email correspondence.
The lady there denied having made a mistake, and when pointed out, proceeded to
issue a new visa, but still insisted it wasn't her fault.  At the time I did
not discuss the issue further as there was no point, but I wonder who signed
the document in the first place without checking the details ...

**Wasted Effort*

My point is Indian embassies are as a rule uncooperative and not
accommodating. And for this, I can vouch. When I lost my passport in Bejing
in August 2007, I discovered to my everlasting disappointment that the
Chinese police, authorities and my travel guide were overeager to help, but
not the Indian embassy, then headed by Nirupama Rao, now India’s foreign
secretary. The attitude I encountered was typically *desi*, every Indian at
the embassy felt (and showed it) they were doing me a huge favour in issuing
me a duplicate passport. In contrast a female Chinese police officer spent
more time trying to explain to me the procedures in China, the job that
should have been done by someone in the embassy. Fed up, I called up every
senior journalist friend I knew in Delhi. Hey presto, it finally worked, and
my passport was ready, but not before the laminating machine was purposely
made to malfunction because my calling up ‘friends’ made me the most hated
Indian in Beijing. In fact, when I went across to say thank you, one
graceless official said –“Whatever.”

Title: Who the Bleep cares about Civil Servants and unlikely heroes?
By: Selma Carvalho
Source: Goan Voice Newsletter 7 Sept. 2009.

44. Who the Bleep cares about Civil Servants and unlikely heroes?

John Francis Fernandez was one of those heroes on par with Rosa Parks of the
Civil Rights movement in the United States. Much as Rosa Park's refusal to
give up her bus seat in deference to a White passenger heralded the Civil
Rights movement, Fernandez' little known and equally uncelebrated actions
challenged the inherent racial inequity prevalent in Uganda's colonial Civil
Services. He was a Mangalorean but I'm willing to appropriate this unlikely
hero for us Goans, for his courage challenged commonly held notions about
race and the competency of the predominantly Goan Civil Servants in British
East Africa.

John was one of those adventurers that set out to discover life on the
plains of East Africa, arriving in Uganda in 1901 to work for the Railways
as a clerk, later taking up positions in various other parts of East Africa.
In a letter to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, he leaves behind a
haunting image of Africa in those early days of life for those clerks, most
of whom were Goan, posted to remote areas such as Kisumu and the Northern
Frontier District, where neither man nor beast could escape the swarms of
mosquito and tsetse flies. Of Kisumu in Kenya, he recalls: evening meals
eaten sitting cross-legged on my bed in order not only to prevent mosquito
bites but to prevent the myriads of lake flies getting into my plate of
soup. Fernandez' illustrious career continued unfazed, joining Sir Arthur
Geoffrey on his expedition into Marsabit and assisting him greatly in the
triangulation of the Northern Frontier District. Geoffrey Archer went on to
become Governor of Somaliland and then Uganda in 1922, while John was
decorated with the General Services Medal and the Nandi Clasp, but his
position continued to be that of Book-keeper.

Towards the end of his service in 1932, he took up cudgels on his own behalf
and challenged the notion that tacitly upheld racial inequality within the
Uganda Civil Services. Among other things he wanted his designation to be
changed from Book-keeper to that of Accountant and the adjective Asiatic
which qualified his position, to be dropped, for he felt strongly that in
Uganda it had the same significance as nigger. The mettle of the man can
be seen when in an interview with Sir George Tomlinson, Assistant
Under-Secretary of State, Colonial Office, he refused a medal of honour
which he was offered instead of the requested promotion, saying he had asked
for bread and they were giving him metal. The composite, organic and often
conflicting nature not just of colonial Africa but of human societies is
played out in the unfolding drama of this case, where on the one hand were
men determined to uphold an inequitable status quo and other men stoked by
their conscience wanted to move the moral zeitgeist of the times ahead.

It would be incorrect of me to portray this story as the villainous pitted
against the virtuous, but rather of players trapped within the limitation of
Empire. Fernandez was an outstanding employee and because of his stellar
performance, he had garnered the support of people in powerful positions,
without which his case would not have lingered in the upper echelons of
power to be debated for two long years before being rejected. Amidst
allegations of blatant racism and counter justifications of just following
due process, Sir Bernard Bourdillon, Governor of Uganda, denied that Asians
were withheld from promotion merely because of their race and insisted that
the: the Asiatic branch of service have not displayed the capacity, nor
submitted applications, for such advancement and that the Asiatic staff
has not been able to produce men of sufficiently outstanding
qualifications.

It would take another twenty-five years and the Lidbury Commission, headed
by Sir David Lidbury to finally acknowledge the racial barriers that existed
in the British Civil Services of East Africa and to strip these away layer
by layer. Once this was done, Alvaro Collaco rose to the position of Acting
Head of the Budget Department, Ministry of Finance. Ferdinand Rodrigues in
1972 became Under Secretary, President's Office as well as decorated as
Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great. Armando Rodrigues,
who had started out as a clerk in 1947 became the C.E.O of the Uganda
government's largest Ministry. Life had indeed

Goa’s Identity Movement, in co-ordination with the Goan Sodality group, held
its Meeting at Saint Mary Church Hall in Dubai, on Friday 4th September
2009. The President of Goan Sodality, Mr. Cajetan Coelho started off the
well attended meet with a brief introduction and Fr. Savio Cardozo ended the
same, with a call for Goans to wake up for the love of Goa.

The Meeting included a deeply moving documentary on Goa’s current horrific
destruction (Prepared by Mr. Rajan Parrikar - USA), a comprehensive
presentation by Mr. Arwin Mesquita, with the overall vision i.e. “TO HAVE
WORLD CLASS STATE WITH A UNIQUE IDENTITY; which was followed by a detailed
discussion by all. There was a unanimous view that Goans should concentrate
on what we “CAN DO” in a positive civilized manner, to save Goa preserve
its unique identity.

The participants agreed time bound action points and also highlighted the
critical requirement for Goans to be united, for the cause. The Goan
Sodality team and Mr. Benedict Lobo played a key role, in organizing this
meeting in Dubai. The Movement will co-ordinate further action via its

Samir,

Booking the Electricity Department will not help. As I had mentioned in one of
my previous posts,
the person who will get suspended will either be the poor lineman or the Junior
Engineer, in charge
of that area. We need accountability at the political level.

When the power line snapped and hit the ground, the safety devices should have
tripped. However,

all these circuit breakers must have been bypassed to see that there is no
interruption in supply! In many

cases because the fuses keep on blowing, thick wire is used, so much so that
you can see red hot fuses

in the open fuse boxes, below the transformers!

India in general pays scant attention to the infrastructure that is necessary
to build a nation.
Goa is no different. There is no planning, substandard equipment is acquired
and there is inadequate
training for the staff. All the Ministers and the Chairmen of corporations need
to have that latest car
with the red light on it, whereas the Electricity Department will not get the
vehicles or the equipment
required to attend to faults.

Politicians go and promote all these schemes to provide electricity to all.
However, they don't ascertain
if there is adequate supply available. Transformers are overloaded and there is
fair amount of pilfering,
not only to households but to industrial units, in connivance with the powers
that be!

Whatever infrastructure projects that are launched, only lead to lining the
pockets of politicians.
The factor of safety is compromised to allow the politicians to make more money.

One must commend BEST and the city of Bombay for providing interrupted power
supply to such a large
city. Can we ever expect that to happen in Goa?

I had heard recently, that Birlas offered to build power plants in Goa, using
garbage that is generated.
When the politicians asked for their cut, they withdrew.

to things like this, people hardly bother.

It would be good if we can set a precedent here and book the Electricity

Very very sad to read this. I am extremely sorry and shocked and pray for the
family. But, which other prayers to say? How many more rosaries to recite?
How to pray? What to ask ? The innocent have died because of deliberate and
long negligence of someone who were/are/will never care for human lives. They
are busy dancing to the LIVE music in Casinos and on the other side here is a
family and friends who are crying because of the LIVE wires that hang around us
to give us death.

An untimely death. Not 1 but 2. Same family. If, and if ever such things were
to happen to one of the government/ministers/rich family , there would have
been probably a BANDH in Goa, entire Electricity department would have been
fired or transferred, police cells would have been filled with all responsible
and not responsible, with proofs or without proofs. Such is the administration
and infrastructure of Goa.

The time to complain is GONE and OVER.

Its a coincidence to read the below link article in Times of India questionning
'What will happen to Goa and Goans identity,Culture, language. Its not what
will happen, it has already happenned. Goa and Goans are dying.
http://www.google.ae/search?hl=ensource=hpq=Goa+is+undergoing+drastic+demographic+changesmeta=aq=foq=

I urge and appeal to Goans, do not be ashamed anymore. Treat GOA as our own
house. Lets
take up the broom and clean our backyard first, lets not feel ashamed to work
IN GOA as per our qualifications , be it electrical, plumbing, gardening,
agriculture, farming, fishing, bakery(be rich Poders), painting, carpenty, grow
and sell vegetables fruits. Lets speak often and everywhere in konkanni,
demand and force ourselves to work in public offices. Lets start our own
business however small it may be. Dont just think only alcohol sells in Goa.
Dont just think Australia/NZ/Canada/USA/UK/GULF you can make money, sorry those
days are gone, we can actually make more money right there in Goa, not black
money or money through corruption, but hard earned money.

IN SHORT, DONT DEPEND ON OTHERS, LETS TRY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO DO “ THE JOB”
OURSELVES IN GOA FOR GOA AND US GOANS. IF WE LEAVE OUR LIVES IN OTHERS HANDS,
THE ANSWER IS THEY WILL LEAVE LIVE WIRES SO LONG THAT ENTIRE GOA AND GOANS WILL
BE FINISHED. THIS IS WHAT THEIR WAY OF WORKING DID TO 'JOAQUIM AND DOMINGO'.
Goans can make the best of floats, can decorate the best of halls, can design
the best of fruit carvings, can dress in style, can talk pleasingly, can sing
melodiously, are in demand in hospitality service industry, be it chefs,
waiters, managers. What is it that is stopping Goans to do what outsiders are
doing in Goa.

Cant Goans fix a tubelight? - If Goans lived using kerosene lamps(petromas)
ponti, what is this tubelight. But the will should be there, now.
Cant Goans paint a house - Who used to paint the Badkars our own houses
before? So, Goans can even now paint beautifully, especially the villas with
no boundaries(to meet and greet neighbours), because in it Goans used to live.
True Goans do not live in Flats(stuffy ). But the will should be there, now
Cant Goans do construction, plumbing, carpentery - Well well just peep into
1970s Goan houses and see the furniture(is there any white ants?), construction
with a no-leak plumbing 'the well' inside the houses. But the will should be
there now
Cant Goans sell fish/rice/vegetables/fruits - Again, what a silly question,
Goans know when and where and what time to fish, can grow the best of
rice(tambde tandum), vegetables and fruits not just in fields but in their own
backyards. Some Goans do it even now. But the will should be there, now to
continue.
Cant Goans work in govt. offices. Again, Goans do not step in govt. offices
because Goans are quite straight forward and do not like the sloppy and slow
work and piling of papers. These are done by outsiders. So Goans stayed away.
But, but the will should be there to step in and throw out the outsiders, now
Cant Goans pluck their own coconuts - Ask the badkars who saw many tender
coconuts before taking afternoon and after he woke up tender coconuts were
missing. Don't see the negative side, see the skills of those who plucked them.
Who were they? outsiders? No. But the will should be there, now.
Cant Goans do gardening, cleaning backyard. - Did you ever see the earlier days
'porshum' and how well it was maintained with fencing and gate. But the will
should be there, now.

IN SHORT, GOANS

It could be from two words 'Maad' (Coconut) and 'Ganv' (village)
i.e. village of coconuts from 'Madgaon', as I guess 'Margaon' is of
recent origin.

I always wondered whether the name 'Margao' comes from two words 'Mhar'
and 'Ganv' - meaning place belonging to Mhar's.

Today, I begin a new series, ‘The

forgotten Tribe - MHAR.’ I have tried to encompass as much as I know and

recollect
about the Mhars. It is more than likely there are some aspects that may
have

escaped my attention.
***The word Margao is a lusitanized form of Maddganv, probably from
Matth-graham, or Matthganv, the village with a monastery (Mutt), which was
at the Monte-Maddganv, which was abandoned because of omen, and on the spot
the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Piedade was built. There is Maddel ward,
which can be associated with madd, coconout grove. The form Mar-ganv was
subsequently linked to Mhar, farazes, and also to Maruncho ganv, the
village of spirits.

More investigation is needed.

Parrikar tops Sangh list
RADHIKA RAMASESHAN

New Delhi, Sept. 5: Attempts have started to build a consensus on
Manohar Parrikar as the next BJP president once Rajnath Singh’s term
ends in December.

BJP and RSS sources confirmed that at a three-day meeting the Sangh
brass had from September 1 in a hermitage off Hardwar, three names
were shortlisted: Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Narendra Modi and Parrikar.

Parrikar, a former chief minister of Goa, is understood to have
emerged as the first choice.

Chauhan apparently is reluctant to move out of Madhya Pradesh where he
is serving a second term as chief minister, although he was rated the
“most competent” organisational hand and team leader.

Modi came out top on the ideology quotient, but doubts were voiced on
his ability to carry his colleagues along at this “most critical
juncture” when it is imperative for the BJP to leave its factional
wars behind.

By a process of elimination, Parrikar emerged as the Sangh’s
candidate, although nobody who took his name was sure if he would be
backed by those who “mattered” in the BJP.

If elected, Parrikar, 54, is expected to carry forward the process of
“generational change” the Sangh had ushered in when it endorsed the
names of Arun Jaitley as the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya
Sabha and Sushma Swaraj as the deputy leader in the Lok Sabha.

Parrikar fulfils the RSS wishlist for Rajnath’s successor — strong on
ideology, committed to its “work culture” and a person who combines
“integrity with dynamism”.

However, sources said, a major reason for picking someone from outside
the current crop of central leaders was to ensure that the nominee did
not come with a “larger-than-life” persona that made him a first among
equals in the BJP and derailed the methodology of collective
decision-making and decentralisation.

Sources recalled that the RSS had made sure that the president of the
Jana Sangh was mostly a notional head who would not craft policies and
take decisions autonomously without consulting his team. The general
secretary in charge of the organisation was more powerful than the
president because he was the bridge between the party and the RSS in
an era when the latter’s authority was unquestioned.

With the emergence of L.K. Advani, the power centre shifted towards
the president. As the Sangh’s sway over the BJP diminished, the
organising secretary’s post became virtually irrelevant.

It is believed that in choosing someone like Parrikar, the Sangh wants
to reassert its supremacy over the BJP and revive the importance of
the organising secretary.

The poor electrical
linemen, his bosses or the politicians who control the pursestrings ?  One
questions whether India will ever reach the status of a world power when for
decades there are no improvements at the
local level.

The question on who is to blame is an interesting question. The electricity
department, the politicians? I say it is society in general. The lackadaisical
attitude to safety is evident in many levels of society - road safety, hygiene,
general maintenance, the environment etc. It is not only public infrastructure
that is poorly maintained. For many, the sense of responsibility, hygiene and
cleanliness seems to end at one's front door. Who elects the incompetent
politicians? May one hazard to say that it is the generally ignorant and
communal Goan population?
The only long term solution for this is good quality education for the masses.
Marlon

- Original Message
From: Naguesh Bhatcar sgbhat...@hotmail.com
