[Goanet] Building Bridges – monday muse (15Ma r’10)
MONDAY MUSE (15 March 2010) BUILDING BRIDGES Two brothers with adjacent farms fell apart after years of farming side by side, sharing machinery and labour. The relationship soured because a small misunderstanding grew into an exchange of bitter words. The enmity resulted in the younger brother excavating the meadow between their lands to create a deep trench. The infuriated elder brother asked a carpenter to block his brother out of view by building a high fence. The farmer went to town and returned at sunset to see that the carpenter had not built any fence. Instead he had built a bridge across the trench! And his estranged younger brother was coming across, his hand outstretched and saying, ‘after all I've said and done, you have built this bridge’. The brothers laid to rest their differences as they embraced on the bridge. So often, small misunderstandings develop into major rifts. The deepest of divides can be overcome, only by the building of bridges. If we cannot bridge the gap ourselves, we must permit mutual well-wishers to build the bridge like the carpenter did. The bridge of communication helps us to be better at crossing across the unwarranted rift in a relationship. So many gaps widen only because there were no attempts to bridge the break-ups. We must re-look at all our conflicts and examine them to see whether they are divergences on values and principles or just frivolous misunderstandings. Most of the time, we discover it is the latter and when do realise the fact, may the bridge be built! May we BE BETTER at building bridges of connection… to overcome every divisive gap in the bond of association! - Pravin K. Sabnis The INTERNET now has a personality. YOURS! See your Yahoo! My interest is not human frailties but breaking of law by violence or threats of violence by people with extremist opinions and particularly its exploitation by pseudo-secular political operatives. At first when he attacked me i was wounded on my left hand and still he tried to throw me down on the ground. At this occasion with full force i pushed his head under my legs and tried to press his neck Tulsakar told adding but as his mouth was open he bit my right hand and i shouted for help. Sighting commotion the dogs also came running towards the direction and seeing them the leopard ran away. IToday being a sunday we got up bit late and i was still sleeping when i heard a roar from the wild cat and shout for help from my husband Pushpa Tulaskar his wife told Herald I was unable to know about anything but ran outside and saw the leopard attacking my husband. The scuffle lasted for six to seven minutes and i almost saw my death before me. Pandurang tells. Immediately he was shifted to PHC Bicholim and later to Asilo Mapusa. His right hand was seriously injured while there were marks of his nails on his left hand. Following the incident the forest department personnel rushed to the site and tried to investigate about the incident. While they were doing so just some meteres away from the spot where the leopard attacked Pandurang the officials found a dead body of a female leopard. She died due to a trap laid for catching a wild boar. The leopard was caught in a trap and died due to dehydration and this is confirmed after the postmortem done by the veternary doctors. ACF, Subhash Henrick told Herald on phone the leopard that attacked the person and the one that died are two different animals as the other leopard had died some 12 hours before the incident. We are moving forward in two different direction one as to who had laid the trap in which the leopard was caught and secondly we are also laying a trap to catch the other leopard who attacked the person. Henrick told.

MF Husain's brush to rewrite Qatar's cultural heritage Jumana Shah / DNAMonday, March 15, 2010 2:00 IST Email Ahmedabad: MF Husain’s horses are all set to give a fresh perspective to the cultural heritage of Qatar, the master painter’s new homeland. Amid the din over Husain accepting the much coveted Qatar citizenship, the work for which he has received the honour has received almost no attention. Maqbool Fida Husain is called the master painter not without reason. He has been working on an imaginative exploration of man-made energy (cars) versus the natural energy of the horses, to depict with an ingenuity that is uniquely his, the idea of Man versus Machine. In Qatar, he is working to transmute the idea into a tangible work of art. Three life-sized glass horses placed among five well-known cars — the Ferrari, Bentley, Jaguar, Phantom Rolls Royce and the Bugatti. These will be accompanied by a 10-feet-high model of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Flying Machine’ as depicted in his drawings, and a sculpture of Abbas ibn Firnas, the Arab man who first made a scientific attempt to fly, on a 16-feet-long pole. These will have, as backdrop, a 10-feet-high and 40-feet-wide painting made by Hussain on the idea. This massive work of art will be housed in a special museum, commissioned by the First Lady of Qatar — Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned, wife of the emirate’s ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Husain has been working on this project for over three years now. He is engrossed in the work which he enjoys immensely. The life-size horses are made of Murano glass, created entirely in Italy and then sent to Qatar. Each horse would weigh at least two tonnes. The underlying theme of the museum, as mentioned on a temporary plaque installed there, is: ‘Form Follows Function — A tribute to the power of man versus machine’. The 95-year-old artist has also given 15 paintings to the first Islamic museum inaugurated in Doha last year. He will be contributing 99 paintings in all for the entire project in Qatar. “The cultural village will be a huge state-of-the-art multimedia installation with sound and light explaining the idea,” said Anil Relia, founder-chairman of Ahmedabad-based Archer Group, which has been working very closely with the famous painter. Husain has been given a huge fully-equipped bungalow in Doha with a car to facilitate his long stays in Qatar for the project. “Husain met Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned soon after he left India,” Relia said. “He had made a series of paintings on ancient Islamic culture. An exhibition of his paintings was to be held in Doha but was cancelled due to some reasons. However, Her Highness had seen his paintings and had liked them. The association between the Qatar royal family and MF Husain the painter started after that.”

[Goanet] A saffron twist to Swami Nityananda's case. RELIGION IS THE OPIUM OF THE PEOPLE KARL MARX
Fair enough that this article was put up on Goanet---its India related. But was it necessary to bring Marx in to present this article? Why these perennial digs. Does it help you or anyone? In the context presented (all the ills) signing Jai Hind is insulting, and that too with an exclamation mark. At least say you are sad to say Jai Hind (if you are). I mean there will be a lot of stories coming out like this for the next fifteen years---the churning cannot stop that easily. So at least hold your ground and maintain distance (other there is no difference with those who consistently lambaste anything a bit off center left)--praise your existence and dare I say, even pray---if only for ones internal core. Call it meditation if that helps. Seriously, people. Still your minds. Its getting obvious and trite that Christianity has not helped too many Goans--other than the lifestyle bit. But even that is hardly our very own now. Its pretty clear that most cannot turn the other cheek--and I can see the fear in doing so. Its also pretty guaranteed that in a full blown fight (tondantlem huim nhu khuim bhair sorchenam) most will be crying mummy. So what is it that moves your bones. Please understand that I talking about all Goans. venantius j pinto Subject: [Goanet] A saffron twist to Swami Nityananda's case. RESPONSE: Dear Dr Desai, I submit that (albeit, inadvertently) you have, by your above quoted statements, demonstrated a slight inbuilt prejudice you may have against Catholic priests. Why, otherwise, would you not indicate the reason for the arrest of the Hindu godmen in Indian - and yet (quite correctly) state the pedophilia allegations against the Catholic priests? That having been said, I'd like to turn to (what I believe) is your premise with the allegations being made on the videoCD. While you await Marshall's response to your queries, I'd like to ask you a few queries of my own: a: Without making any pre-judgment on the veracity of the accusations, Is the VideoCD - a form of art OR is it potentially a form of slander? b: Having noted that (Indian) doctors are often accused in Britain of sexually molesting their patients, what would you say IF someone produced a VideoCD in Colva or Collem accusing you and other UK Indian doctors of sexually molesting your patients? c: Considering that a number of individuals are known to make false accusations of molestation - for whatever reason - What do you believe happens to the person who is falsely accused of such acts? d: Does the law (in India) make provisions for any accusations to be dealt with in court? e: Is it that we are now advocating (no pun intended) the use of the electronic media to slander individuals we do not like - be they in Ribandar or Rivona? There is, I believe, a method to achieve two goals by making a small modification in the law i.e. to Make it mandatory (under penalty of a prison term for failure to do so) for ANYONE who suspects or knows of anybody molesting another.. to report it to the police.and be available to be cross-examined in court by the accused. The two goals achieved by this: (1) More cases of child or serial adult abuse will (potentially) be reported to the law. (2) Less cases of slander will be tolerated. I further submit the following: #1: We should leave consenting adults alone. #2: Nobody should attempt to take the law in his/her own hands. #3: If we are unhappy with the law - as it is - lobby to effect a change. #4: If the court system is too slow, study law, apply to be a judge and help clear the backlog. BUT: Let us not call slander .. a freedom of expression. The next act of slander might be against us! sincerely jc
Re: [Goanet] A different matter altogether (was Saint or Sinner)
JC, I try not to have any prejudices. I knew the allegations against the priest and I chose not to repeat them. The charges against hindu priests have been in the print media and TV in India as well on the net, Youtube etc. One was running a sex racket, another eloped with a young follower and the third one was shown in intimate position with an actress on a VCD.. Law is taking care of the first two and hopefully the followers who have been duped by the third one will take appropriate measures against him. Paedophilia by catholic priests was introduced by Mario in a post circulated to most of the people who contribute regularly to goanet and hence I did not think that this was a matter of prejudice on my part. Answers to your questions: 1.Religious leaders, in my opinion should have their misdeeds exposed in print as well as visual media. The third hindu godman? was exposed by a secret camera planted in his bedroom covertly. It did expose his duplicitous behaviour in preaching one thing and practicing quite another. If allegations against the Colva priest are false and slanderous, he can sue Calvert for defamation. He would be entitled to crores of rupees compensation, particularly because one otf the allegation is quite serious and because of his standing in the society. 2. About Indian doctors in the UK: I think you are seriously misinformed. IN the 28 years that I have worked here, I can recollect five or six cases. I am sure you know that thousands of Asian doctors work in the health service here. With regard to molestation CD against me: India is a free country and if someone does make such aVCD, I will have to tackle it when it happens. I would not lose sleep over it, I would not make threat of violence against the people who make it. I know I cannot stop anyone from embarking on such a risky project. 3. What happens to the person so accused will depend on so many factors: whether the allegations are true, whether the person accepts that they are true and simlarly whether they are false and the person has clear conscience, whether the person is strong or weak etc etc. When I was fighting against DuPOnt in goa, Front page of daily Gomantak accused me of accepting a bribe of 63 lakh rupees through my father from Du POnt (whom we managed to drive out of Goa). It was also claimed in a front page news that I was to be arrested under antiterrorism law. Neither of these allegations have ever affected me or whatever standing I have amongst the Goans I care about. I sought legal advice from a very seniour goan lawyer about suing chowgules who were the owners of Gomantak then. They refused to apologise and the legal advice was that I will be wasting a lot of money with no chance of success. Sometimes, this is the price we have to pay for the freedoms we enjoy. About your suggestions: They are interesting but not novel. I rest my case. Anil Desai On 15 March 2010 13:46, J. Colaco jc cola...@gmail.com wrote: anil desai wrote: [1] I heard one song on youtube. Dear friends, As part of the ongoing series of music revival and an attempt to raise funds for the museum, on the 20th of March, GOA CHITRA presents for the first time in Goa, a trilogy of jazz, dance and visual display called “COME TO YOUR SENSES”. Experience a palette of colourful visuals as Viktor Hugo screens a collections of clips and videos to go to the beats of a live band, “Jazz Junction” and matching her body to this rhythm is Marion Urvan with her global Contemporary dance performance. FLYER: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sTNO8iy8U8Pu5HjovRFxEw?feat=directlink Jazz Junction was formed by bassplayer Colin D'Cruz and features some of India's most accomplished jazz musicians that includes singer Yvonne Gonsalves, pianist Darryl Rodrigues and drummer Lester Godinho. The band has featured various visiting international jazz virtuosos over the years and currently features German saxophonist Bernard Schmidt. Jazz Junction offers a tight rhythm section in Darryl, Colin and Lester, giving visiting singers and soloists a great platform to perform in while they are in India. [Goanet] Revellers dance to the beats of dhols, tashes at Margao shigmo
Revellers dance to the beats of dhols, tashes at Margao shigmo TNN, Mar 15, 2010, 07.37am IST MARGAO: A volley of sounds emanating from the beats of the traditional dhols and tashes rent the air, as revellers danced and rejoiced to the tunes of 'Ossai Ossai' and 'Ghumche katar ghum' at the shigmo celebrations organized by Margao Shigmotsav Samiti on Sunday. Chief minister Digambar Kamat flagged off the float parade that commenced from near the Holy Spirit square and culminated at the municipal square. A spectacular display of folk dances that preceded the float parade enthralled the spectators with as many as 32 groups of folk artistes donned in traditional attire staging their performances. If the 'fugdeos', 'talgadis' and 'dhalos' were a spectacular display of the art of coordinated movements, the 'samai nrityas' (lamp dances) by women was a splendid show of the art of balancing and concentration that drew large applause from the crowd. A scintillating performance of tonnea-mells (a dance form using sticks) also enthralled the spectators. This was followed by several troupes of romtamells with participants performing rhythmically to the clanging of the cymbals the beating of the drums. A large number of tableaux were showcased in the float parade that proved to be a major draw, both for the kids as well as the elderly. Most of the tableaux portrayed mythological scenes with special effects thrown in for good measure. Watch towers equipped with CCTVs and manned by gun totting policemen were among slew of security measures that were put in place by the authorities to prevent any untoward incidents. A number of foreign nationals were also seen absorbing the festive mood and dancing with the locals. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Revellers-dance-to-the-beats-of-dhols-tashes-at-Margao-shigmo/articleshow/5684088.cms

Dr Anil Desai: 1. Do you really believe that the whole controversy about Tasleema Nasreen is about Hindu extremists using her case for political purposes( as you have put it)? 2. Can we read your views about the violence in Colva and the treatment meted out to Culvert and the actions of religious extremists with regard to Da Vinci Code movie? Response: 1.Yes, it is pretty much clear. That is why Narendra Modi, the epitome of human rights abuses and excesses, offered her refuge in Gujarat. Yet writers and artistes who do not toe the hindutva line are hounded at every opportunity. Check with Mallika Sarabhai, Ashish Ray, the student artists at MS University. If Tasleema who writes against muslim fundamentalism can be tolerated and feted, why not MFH? If this is not double standards, what is?Also refer to the following article. http://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed/bigidea/Our-con-artists/Article1-260498.aspx 2. Please refer to my post on the Colva violence: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-January/188251.html 3.So far as the movie Da Vince Code is again concerned, it is far from being a religious issue. The movie was shown abroad even in christian countries without any problem. It was also shown in many states in India, including Bombay where I live, without any problem. It was only in Goa and I believe Punjab where there were problems. These were instigated by polticians like Churchill Alemao trying to exploit religious sentiments for political gain. Democratic protests are perfectly acceptable and normal in civilised society while violence is definitely not. Regards, Marshall

Dr Anil Desai: The pseudo-secularist political operators in India see bad in Hindu religion only. Response: 1. I have several times stated very clearly that violence or hate is no answer to any disagreement or dispute. You are welcome to run through the Goanet archives where you will find upteen such postings. There are democratic and civil ways of protesting. 2. Now,can you point out even one post of mine speaking bad or negative of the Hindu religion or even hindu religious practices? 3. Do you believe that the hindu religion and hindutva ideology to be one and synonymous? 4. Do you subscribe to the hindutva ideology? 5.Could you kindly share with us what motivated you to post that insensitive and tactless article by Francois Gauntier at the height of the violence against christians in Orissa by hindutva extremists two years ago? 6. I may have perhaps missed seeing your post condemning the violence against christians in Orissa by extremist hindutvavadis. Would you be kind enough to provide the link to this post? 7. You mentioned in an earlier post that you felt offended by MHF's painting which was posted by someone on Goanet in the course of a debate. Are you similarly offended when these paintings are displayed on the websites of organisations like HJS/SS, VHP, Bajrang dal, etc? If yes, have you communicated your sense of hurt to them? Have you ever condemned such acts or do you feel they are justified? Regards, Marshall
Re: [Goanet] NANODA MAN ATTACKED BY LEOPARD; ANOTHER WILD CAT FOUND DEAD
Samir Umarye wrote: BICHOLIM MARCH 15: A 45 year old person from Pistewada Nanoda Bicholim was injured in a leopard attack while a another 3 year old female leopard was found dead near the same place. -snip- At first when he attacked me i was wounded on my left hand and still he tried to throw me down on the ground. At this occasion with full force i pushed his head under my legs and tried to press his neck Tulsakar told adding but as his mouth was open he bit my right hand and i shouted for help. - Folks. FWIW, if ever you are attacked by a leopard, you will probably be able to fend off the animal, even if you are unarmed. While I was in my early twenties, a hunting party I was with got invited to drive into a road-less African village where we were taken to meet an old woman. The old woman had killed a leopard with her bare hands a few days prior. The woman had skinned the leopard and was trying to sell the hide. An elder told us that the woman was returning to the village with water in the morning when she was attacked. Leopards are wired to stay away from humans. The only time they will attack a human is when they are injured or old and are unable to hunt properly. By the time a leopard is hungry enough to stalk a human, it is already weak or dying of starvation. When questioned, the old lady said that she strangled the leopard, partly out of self-defence and partly out of fear. An inspection of the leopards hide confirmed that it was an old/sick one as the hair was falling from the skin. Returning to the leopards in Goa, when you have two of them in the proximity of a village, rest assured that they are searching for a new food supply as their regular source of food has disappeared. Given the current situation in Goa, I would not be surprised if the dust/waste from open pit mines are causing havoc with the leopards habitat. [Goanet] Literati: ROADRUNNER by DILIP D'SOUZA
Literati invites you to journey through DILIP D’SOUZA’s book ROADRUNNER. SUDEEP CHAVRAVARTI will preside over the journey which explores small town America from the Indian view point. Please join us on 20th March 2010 at 7 p.m. “Indian travel writing, never a large or a particularly vibrant genre, comes of age in Dilip D’Souza’s Roadrunner.” DNA Sunday, February 28, 2010 “Over the course of three long, looping drives through the South, the Mid-West and the West, D'Souza takes the back roads, goes into the small towns, and looks into the real, everyday America, and the real, everyday Americans who inhabit it. He is a sort of Indian Bill Bryson among the proverbial fat girls in Des Moines. In the process, he does many of the things I wish I could have done myself. He goes, for example, to the world's biggest annual gathering of Harley Davidson enthusiasts, in South Dakota, and hangs out with a group of black-leather-and-denim-clad “Bikers for Christ”, who spread the word of God among the hard-drinking, hard-sinning congregation, patiently distributing their literature (“Wanted: Drug addicts, alcoholics, satanists, topless dancers, liars, adulterers, homosexuals, racists … by Jesus Christ”) and engaging random bikers in conversations about how Darwin was dead wrong. He visits the Civil War cemetery at Shiloh, Tennessee, where nearly 20,000 young American soldiers lie buried, and discovers just how jagged was the divide that ran through the heart of the country: from the list of regiments that fought here, for example, he learns that one part of the 1st Missouri Regiment fought for the Union, while another part of the 1st Missouri fought for the Confederacy, comrade gunning down comrade. He wanders down the historic Route 66 (immortalised by Nat King Cole's old song), which once took migrants from the Dust Bowl of the 1930s to the promised land of California, and he talks to people from the slowly dying communities along the Route today who are bravely trying to cope with the marginalisation that has followed its de-linking from the US highway system in the 1980s. D'Souza is a sensitive and thoughtful man, and therefore Roadrunner is more than just the usual travel book; it has a collection of insights and observations about India, triggered off by parallel experiences in the US. For example, a conversation with Carl, his “Biker for Christ” friend is, for him, like looking into a mirror at the entire “ Is desh mein rehna hoga, Toh Vande Mataram kehna hoga” issue. Driving through Alabama, listening to bad country music on the car radio sets off a speculation about why today's low-brow Bollywood mega-hits have connected with the Indian listener in a way that the great music of the O.P.Nayyar-Sahir-Naushad era could have never done. A visit to an Arizona aerospace museum leads to a reflection on the purpose of India's Republic Day Parade (via a comment on the behaviour of gazelles being chased by lions). The book is filled with philosophical cut-aways like these.” The Hindu ;Sunday, Feb 21, 2010 Roadrunner, Dilip D'Souza, HarperCollins, p.331, Rs. 399. Goanet A-C-E! Arts ~ Culture ~ Entertainment
