True. Good points. Tulu script went into decline. Perhaps a few do. Kannada

Yves Gomes: Maryland 17 year-old set to be deported on August 13
http://www.weareamericastories.org/videos/yves-gomes-maryland-17-year-old-set-to-be-deported-on-august-13/

Thanks for taking action to stop the deportation of Yves Gomes. Please
forward this petition to your friends!

Sign the Petition!

Yves Gomes is a 17-year-old high who just graduated from high school in
Maryland. He is in imminent danger of being deported from the county that
he considers his home.

Yves came to the United States in 1994 when he was just over a year old. He
was brought to Washington DC by his father and mother, and his younger
brother was later born here, making him an American citizen. However, his
father and mother were not able to get legal status in the US so they were
eventually deported back to their home countries of Bangladesh and India
(respectively) in 2009. Yves is also undocumented, but was been given
additional time to stay and complete his senior year of high school. After
two stays of deportation he has been told to leave the country on August 13,
2010 and return to India.

Yves grew up speaking English, being taught through the American educational
system, and has grown accustomed to American culture and lifestyle. If
deported, Yves fears that it will be nearly impossible for him to adjust to
life in India. Yves graduated from Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville,
MD as an honors student with a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the National
Honors Society.

We ask that Yves be granted a deferral of removal by the Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in order to be able to attend college here
in the US, and that he ultimately be allowed obtain his legal status.

[Goanet] Long term Visas 15 30years to PIO OCI

2010-08-11 Thread rosarioabel fernandes
PIO/OCI to be issued long term visas

HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, AUG 10
The Union Home Ministry has asked all the Indian missions abroad as
well as the Goa FRRO to issue long term extendable visas to persons of
Indian origin.
Commissioner for NRI Affairs Eduardo Faleiro told reporters here that
there were lots of complaints from the Goans who hold foreign
passports that they had to come on tourist visas which is valid only
for three months.
I had received several complaints from Goans holding foreign
passports that some of our embassies and High Commissions abroad,
issue them tourist visas (valid for three to six months) at the end of
which they have to leave the country though they have property matters
to deal with and have families here, Faleiro said adding that
following the complaints he had taken up the issue with Union Home
Minister P Chidambaram.
The home minister has assured me in writing that granting of tourist
visas to PIOs was not correct and that he was advising missions
concerned as well as the foreigners regional registration office in
Goa to ensure that the long term visas are issued to the said category
of persons and these visas are extended from time to time, Faleiro, a
former minister of state for external affairs, further said.
Faleiro also gave the media a copy of an official letter from
Chidambaram, in which the home minister has appealed to all PIO to
apply for the PIO or the Overseas citizen of India (OCI) card.
If they apply for either the PIO or the OCI card, they can stay in
India for 15 years (in case of the PIO card) and 30 years (in case of
the OCI) card. I would request you to advise them to apply for either
the PIO card or the OCI card, Chidambaram has said in his letter
written to Faleiro last month.
The union home minister has also sought a list of mission/embassies
and high commission abroad who are in the habit of issuing tourist
visas to PIO.

[Goanet] Lion Roars - Party Time - III

2010-08-11 Thread Lionel Messias
 *Carte du jour*

The Minister for Revenue Jose Philip entertained modestly (remember, his
flying too was moderate compared to his compadres) between April
2009-February 2010, the only relevance here for you as a taxpayer is he
entertained some unnamed officials on June 5 and on November 6 he
entertained a group of again unnamed police officers and officials of the
Mormugao Port Trust, and District Collectors at a total cost of Rs 25,488 at
Hotel La Paz. He threw his latest bash (January 7, 2010) for an unnamed
group of councillors, officials and ‘dignitaries’. The La Paz bill is
awaited.

That goes too for the Minister for Home Ravi Naik who kept a low profile
unlike his other headline grabbing. Naik threw a dinner for “guests”
attending the India Internal Security Conclave 2009 at the Majorda Beach
Resort on September 24, 2009. Cost: Rs 90,000. On November 1 he threw a
dinner for Diwan Chand (currently Special Secretary, Home) at the Fort
Aguada Beach Resort that cost a whopping Rs 1,23,851. And a dinner for IPS
probationers visiting Goa at the same hotel that cost Rs 1,38,076 on
November 16. For your information, IPS and IAS probationers routinely visit
Goa just like every other man or woman who draws a Government of India
salary. Which is great if you own a posh hotel, posh restaurant or posh cab,
right? But, do we have to wine and dine them at taxpayers cost? Ravi Naik
thinks so, because he was back (February 28, 2010) to entertaining, this
time a group of 80 unnamed officials at the Hotel Marriott. Bill awaited.

Typically, the Minister for Tourism (now ex) Mickky Pacheco entertained a
group of Khazakstan delegates at the Park Hyatt on October 7, 2009. Cost: Rs
66,393. Put that down as being for the glory and good of that other fatted
cow, the tourism industry. Proof of the pudding! How about this? Manohar
Azgaonkar, the Minister for Panchayat threw a bash at Hotel Marriott on
September 9, 2009 for delegates attending the “workshop of Principal
Secretaries in charge of Panchayati Raj in Indian States” and some unnamed
“others”. Cost: Rs 65,189.

*Host with the most*

It truly does pay to be a big cheese on holiday in Goa. Though, sometimes
any kind will do, thank you. You are guaranteed at least one freebie dinner,
sometimes two and no proof of your credentials is required. It’s enough if
you play the part. Here’s proof of that and of Digambar Kamat’s parties that
cost more than Rs 2L. He threw a Rs 3,73,024 dinner on June 27, 2008 for the
chairman and members of the 13th Finance Commission and 100 other allegedly
big wheels (producers etc) of the South Asian film industry at the Cidade de
Goa. How did two very disparate groups come together in Goa, you ask? Could
it be the trouble-free access to your easily available tax bucks? Or, that
the government tried to kill two birds with one stone or, a combination of
both. Remarkably, the same day the Minister for Finance (now ex) Dayanand
Narvekar was also dining the chairman and members of the 13th Finance
Commission at the same Cidade de Goa. Cost: Rs 87,943. That’s a total of Rs
4,60,967, but two dinners, same invitees? Was the government trying to get
around its own self-imposed cap on partying following a series of similar
exposures in this same column some time ago?
*
Open House*

Kamat threw a Rs 2,00,227 do for 100 unnamed revelers at the Park Hyatt on
August 12, 2008. On October 4, 2008 he blew Rs 3,99,800 on an Id-Milan
jamboree at his official residence in Panjim. Amazingly, that night he threw
a second, this time, Rs 2,48,460 dinner for some doctors from Maharashtra
and Goa on the cruise boat Princess de Goa. On January 24, 2009 he hosted of
all people on this planet, delegates of the 57th National Town and Country
Planners Congress. That’s right, the same guys who give you the most grief
(after politicians) with all their skewed planning. The Rs 3,51,854 dinner
was held at Cidade de Goa. A Rs 3,88,927 dinner for delegates of the 12th
Conference on e-Governance on IT at Hotel Inn Resort on February 12, 2009. A
Rs 2,08,388 dinner at the Cidade de Goa for Jaime Lerner, an expert on urban
planning from Brazil. This time guests of the DD Kosambe Festival of Ideas
were invited to the dinner proving my point. Exactly a year later, February
12,2010, Kamat would host another dinner (see Party Time -1, July 25) for
participants of the same DD Kosambe festival of Ideas at the same venue. So,
was Lerner just an excuse to dine these guys? Makes you wonder.

*Money for nothing*

What’s more, the government’s Protocol Department might have inadvertently
added a new dimension to VVIP to mean Visiting Very Important Persons. It
incurred independently an expenditure of Rs 29,83,639 on accommodation and
food for VVIPs visiting Goa between April 2008 and February 2010.
*
COST OF THE PARTY*

Vishwajeet Rane Rs 4,54,282

Ravi Naik Rs 3,51,927

Aleixo Sequeira Rs 1,31,017

Manohar Azagaonkar Rs 65,189

Miccky Pacheco Rs 66,393

[Goanet] Tum Kitem kortolo Aslo?

2010-08-11 Thread Mauricio Pereira

Popular Konkani entertainersWilmix and Sharon Mazarello have been granted the
censor certificate for their upcoming Konkani film 'Tum Kitem Kortolo Aslo?',
but not without amendments.

The film reportedly ran into some trouble for referring to TV screen stars from
Ekta Kapoor's popular saas-bahu serial by their names Parvati and Tulsi.

We were shocked to find out that our film that has absolutely nothing obscene
or anything like that was stalled by the censor board for such a reason, said
Sharon, the screenplay writer-director and lead artiste in the film.

We do not want to hurt anybody's sentiments. It was never our intention,
added Wilmix.

[Goanet] OBAMA's GOVT JULIA ROBERT's HINDU CASTE NAME.......

2010-08-11 Thread M D
Unlike Taliban Al-Qaeda the Hindu Fundamentalists (rashtriya swamyamsevak
sangh, vishwa hindu parishad, bajrangdal, shivsena, durga vahini, ram sene,
etc) Don’t Attack AMERICAN PEOPLE this explains why the US Government, CIA
FBI are not interested in monitoring the activities of the Hindu
fundamentalists. The Hindu fundamentalists receive most of their funds from
Hindu organizations in US, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia New Zealand. But
the Western Governments are not interested in blocking these funds because
the Hindu fundamentalists are NOT attacking WHITE PEOPLE. US President
Barack Obama is appointing certain Hindus with RSS VHP links in his
administration some Indian origin Christian Muslim groups in USA have
protested but Obama is not bothered..Obama is also not bothered about
the random attacks on christians and vandalization of churches in India this
proves Barack Obama is not a Christian.

Julia Roberts converting to Hinduism is not a threat to Christianity but
Julia Roberts should be gracious enough to change her Christian name to
Hindu name. Most of the Hindu Organizations in America are associated with
Vishwa Hindu Parishad which is involved in anti-christian activities in
India. The VHP should suggest Julia some Hindu names or maybe Christians can
suggest Julia some hindu names. How about Radha Roberts.

Julia Roberts childrens hindu names given by one swami when Julia was in
India are - Laxmi for Hazel, Ganesh for Phinnaeus and Krishn Balram for
Henry. Wonder why the swami did not give Julia a Hindu name ? And what caste
now Julia belongs to – is she a Brahmin hindu or Kshatriya hindu or Vaisya
hindu or Sudra Hindu or Mahar Hindu or Chambhar Hindu or Dalit Hindu ? Has
Julia any knowledge of the caste system in Hinduism ? Does Julia know the
origins of Hinduism ? Does Julia know who the indo-aryans were ? Does Julia
know that the hindu caste system was the first form of organized apartheid
in the World ?

Christianity is facing certain threats from Taliban, Al-Qaeda the Hindu
Fundamentalists but the biggest threat to Christianity comes from certain
priests, pastors, vicars, chaplains, monsignors, deacons, bishops, cardinals
who are living a luxurious lifestyle and have become more secular in their
work, thought, dress, speech, sermons than the laity (lay christians). A few
rogue elements who have infiltrated the Christian religious orders have
destroyed centuries of sweat, tears, sacrifice and blood by hundreds of
thousands of priests and nuns.

Its hard to survive in the news market in India without crap news. They will
show everything that doesn’t matter. 3 hours per day about bollywood and
tellywood, 1 hrs per day about some magician, 3 hrs youtube videos, 5 hours
superstitions, 3 hrs murders and rape. all this crap goes on and on. Thou
all this news are pathetic but still if you switch it on you cant get away
from it, all these craps are indeed too attractive to an average Indian.

The USA has replaced the God of her Founding Fathers with the false gods of

Though many Europeans say they consider themselves Christians, far fewer

gray-haired heads in church pews to know attendance will keep falling.
People in Europe now write to their local parish telling the vicar they no

range from 2% to 3% of their income.

In India most of the lay Christians have noticed how some Clergy are selling

how Christian schools are giving preference in admission to children of
wealthy Hindus.

Be advised that from now on . I absolutely commit to supporting

meant by the term the 'Toronto saga'.

As it is, I know only just a bit about Toronto or the Toronto Goans. I
know as much of the so called Toronto saga as I know about Lady Gaga.
I do not know if anyone else has any Toronto connections or if any one
really wants me to speak in public about the them. But then, I would

For the purposes of full disclosure: I (hopefully) come from a really
really very very low-class family from within the Kunbi-Gavdi-Harijan

not know how to drive a car nor a bicycle, write a full sentence or
even be able to copy, paste and not give credit to the original
authors. I hear I was 'talking' gibberish.and that has not
changed. Yep no treatment sought nor available for that..

For the record, I am told that I cried soon after birth and was quite
a handful. Some find me a handful (hopefully, a polite one, in person)
even to this day. It does trouble me that I am a pain to those who
wish to practise their fundamental right to publish and charge for a
book that has been plagiarised. The Library of Congress or BJP having
been noted.

I do apologise.

For future reference, please be advised that I will NOT raise any
further objection (or even a pipsqueak) to anyone's attempt to blatant
or non-blatant plagiarism.

From today, I will believe that those who revel in plagiarism, have
the Human Right (or Left) to do so..and I have absolutely no
business raising cane or Abel about it.

I will also make it my business to accept (without question) the

To konna'lo? By Lucio Rodrigues

Konkani has its own unique expressions -- words,
Phrases, idioms, proverbs, and other folksy
Linguistic miracles which defy translation into any
Other language. To konna'lo? Is one such, with its
Several inflexions according to gender and number:
Tem konnalem, ti konna'li, te konna'le, tea
  Konna'leo, Tim konna'lim.

Literally, the phrase means, Which family does he belong
To? or Who are his parents? It is apparently a simple
Interrogative, an expression of normal, healthy curiosity,
Expressing the concern that one human being has for another.

But to those who know their Konkani and belong to the social
Matrix of Goa, the phrase is far from simple and innocuous.
True, it does express curiosity, but the curiosity is not the
Elementary curiosity of a mere individual. It is the highly
Sophisticated curiosity of the community, or organised
Society. The phrase is a masterpiece of verbal economy and
Semantic subtlety. It implies a social and moral attitude
That is the result of a whole way of life rooted in the soil
Of Goa.

Though the phrase is known to all, it is never used
Indiscriminately. It is not to be bandied about in the street
Or in the market-place. You cannot just speak it out glibly,
Or shout it out brazenly. Even in the drawing-room or the
Dance-hall, you cannot mouth it tactlessly. To do so would be
The height of impertinence, and you would be summarily
Condemned as a very ill-mannered yokel.

In fact, the use of the phrase calls for the proper occasion
And situation, the proper place and time, and above all, the
Most practised gesture and inflexion of voice. Its utterance
Is part of a code.

Goan society is based on a traditional hierarchy which has
Its origins in ancient Hindu India. It is a hierarchy of many
Tiers, arranged in a descending scale, each tier made up of a
Homogeneous group, with its own status, its own privileges
And responsibilities, its own loyalties, and its own code
Of honour, which have to be zealously guarded.

An individual's place in this hierarchy is
Determined solely by the accident of birth. The
Gods decide it all for you: you are born into a
Family which belongs to one of the social tiers,
And there you belong, there you stay. Like the
Fixed stars in the heavens, you have your fixed
Station in the social firmament, and your set
  Orbit.

In the good old days, before emigration and the spread of
Education began to disturb the feudal stability of life in
Goa, everyone knew practically everyone else. Your identity
Was known, not only who you were but also where you belonged.

This is generally true in the villages even today. Such was
The thoroughness with which the hierarchic social system was
Perpetuated that a large number of Hindu surnames could be
Interpreted as marks of identification which placed you
Definitely in one of the social tiers.

However, an accident of history took place to disturb the old
Social order. Foreign conquest and conversion in the
Sixteenth century introduced new ideas of a free and equal
Society in Goa. The logic of the principle that all men are
Equal was a challenge to the traditional hierarchic practice,
And the situation was fraught with perils.

  But the challenge had to be faced. Habits die  hard;
Position and privilege cannot be easily
Surrendered; group loyalties cultivated over the
Centuries cannot be given up. The new ideas of
Social mobility were a threat to the homogeneity of
The group. The purity of the social group had to be
Maintained, the well-being of the members

So he with his

And Christ as

The high caste

The doors of

[Goanet] SESA AFFECTED BY CHINA BAN

2010-08-11 Thread rajendra kakodkar

Read article appearing on mineweb
http://www.mineweb.com/mineweb/view/mineweb/en/page39?oid=109540sn=Detailpid=92730

India's largest iron ore exporter, Sesa Goa Ltd, is in a bind. China has banned
all iron ore imports with Fe content less than 60%, and half of Sesa Goa's
production is below 60% Fe content. Considering the uncertain outlook on iron
ore realisations and demand from the export market, the company's near-term
prospects appear uncertain, analysts have said. Sesa Goa, which is controlled
by billionaire Anil Agarwal, exports 93% of its production, with China
accounting for a whopping 83%, followed by South Korea, Japan and Europe.

Statistics show that China imported 106 million tonnes of Indian iron ore
during the last 12 months. The figure accounts for 18% of all Chinese imports
in 2009. India is the world's fourth largest iron ore producer, with production
touching 230 million tonnes.

Even as Chinese companies are buying up ore mines with two billion worth of
reserves in Africa, the Chinese government imposed a ban on the import of low
grade iron ore. The ban came into effect after the China Iron and Steel
Association advised ore buyers at a conference to stop buying low grade ores.

Analysts tracking the sector said China is expected to produce 600 metric
tonnes of steel this year. ``Its largest player has just 25 metric tonnes of
annual capacity. Moreover, the industry there is trying to consolidate. The ban
could be an effort to cut down supply to smaller units,'' said Prakash Mehrey,
an analyst with ICICI Direct, a unit of Mumbai-based brokerage ICICI Securities.

He added that the ban had not caused a major uproar as yet. Given the low
offtake from steel mills and the fact that the Goa port is closed for the
monsoon, a clearer picture would only emerge at the end of next month. The Goa
port ships nearly half of Indian ores to China.

Analysts said the Chinese decision to ban low-grade iron ore has come into play
as the 40-year-old pricing system, for iron ore based on annual prices, came
unstuck. The system has been replaced by quarterly contracts linked to the spot
market, where prices are higher. The world's third-largest iron ore miner, BHP
Billiton, has also said it will sell the majority of its production to Asian
steel mills on shorter-term contracts.

Reports have indicated that the Chinese government has not extended its ban on
imports of iron ore with Fe content less than 60% to material Chinese mills
purchase directly from suppliers. Analysts maintain that this is a loophole
that Sesa Goa could well use to its benefit.

I disagree with the assertion that Julia Roberts is not a threat to
Christianity. All she has to do now is change her name. Already many Christian
Goanetters and Christian Goans by birth have become Hindus e.g. Valmiki

Many others have done it by wearing sarees and lungis, and eating samosas and

Now with Obama becoming a Hindu fundamentalist I think the threat to

[Goanet] BOILANCHI GADDI

2010-08-11 Thread Tony Fernandes

BOILANCHI GADDI
(BULLOCK CARRIAGE)

The ‘boilanchi gaddi’ is a kind of 2-wheeled carriage drawn by trained bullocks
commonly used in Goa until around the mid nineteen-fifties. It was constructed
in a wood/iron combination. Its fastest travelling speed could be compared to
the usual leisurely walk of a steer. These bullock-drawn carriages were
privately owned.

My earliest memorable experience in travelling in this sort of conveyance was
when I was of about 8 years of age, riding in it to St. Anne’s Church in Parra,
to witness my cousin’s Baptism. A family in Parra owned one of these types of
carriages. It could be rented by making bookings in advance.

One of the most visible outstanding features that caught one's eye was a pair
of its huge iron wheels that served a dual purpose - as riding wheels and
fly-wheel combined, giving it momentum once it got going. It seemed it was
effortless for the bulls to haul these carriages once they got rolling.

These carriages, although uncomfortable, provided a means of some convenient
form of transportation for certain occasions such as the one mentioned above.
The ride was bumpy even though the cab was mounted on leaf springs, but this
could be attributed to unpaved or pot-holed roads at the time. A floating axle
joining the two large wheels passed through a square-cut hollow on the
underside of the cab with a track width of about 6 feet. The wheels were of a
diameter little larger than that of the ‘gaddo’ (about 6 ft.) with large hubs
(around 12 dia.), but the width of the wheels was smaller than the gaddo
(about 2-1/2”).

The cabin had 2 rows of longitudinal bench seats facing each other These seats
could sit 6 people and 2 small children - snug and squeezed in - between the
passengers or on their laps. The passengers could communicate with the driver
through a small window in the front, who had his own comfortable seat unlike
the ‘gaddo’. This raised wooden seat was quite a comfortable perch for the
driver, providing him with an overall view. The seat had curved and decorative
iron bars on both sides. The driver’s seat appeared to be more like a wooden
chest with hinges, that doubled up as storage space for the driver's personal
belongings. This was mounted on top of the longitudinal V-shaped beam, tools or
vehicle accessories. The beams continued up to the rear of the cabin and
contributed as important members of the overall structure of the body. The
cabin had reasonable headroom, and the passengers were well protected from the
elements like the sun and rain with a slightly arched wooden roof. The outside
panels of the cabin were usually painted in a shade of off-white, mustard or
yellow-ochre, and the bordered iron framework was finished in dark red or brown
oil-paint. The interior was finished in medium blue with varnished wooden seats.

Entry into the cab itself was through the hinged rear door, embarkation aided
by a step-up board fitted to the cab's base. Both sides and back window had
hinged wooden flaps with curtains on stretchable wire.

The front end consisted of a double bow withers yoke that was placed on top of
the longitudinal V-shaped centre-piece that ran along the full length of the
cart. The yoke was fastened to the longitudinal beam by means of a rope thereby
giving it the flexibility of pivoting it to some degree, and giving it a
marginal swivel action between the pair of bullocks. This feature aided tight
turns. The yoke was harnessed over their necks in order to pull the carriage.
The front end of the centre-piece curved and extended downward so that, without
the bulls, the cart would rest at a minimum slant. If parked on a slope the
wheels were chocked with wooden slats.

Stopping or braking power was provided ‘verbally’, with gentle 'ho-ho' or a
gentle touch. Most of the maneuvering and negotiating was done by means of
touch or contact conveyed to the bullocks by the driver with a stick - a slight
nudge here and a slight tap there - on their backs. The bullocks seemed ever
obedient, gentle in nature and never seemed to be in a hurry to get to the
destination. These animals were held in reverence by the owner and his family
members, and respected for the work and sustenance they provided.

The yoke rested over the necks of the bullocks, and in hauling it stopped short
just before the ridge of their shoulder blades. Bells that hung around the
bulls’ necks chimed constantly as they passed through the villages. These bells
had a distinct sound and acted as warning bells to others, or merely let the
people know about the presence of the ‘boilanchi gaddi’ in the vicinity or
area. The sound of the bells, referred to as 'kinni-kinni' in common
descriptive form, could be heard far away and long into the quietness of the
night as the lone hard-working driver returned home with his carriage. A gently
swinging hurricane lamp hung low in front, beneath the main beam and between

say: See? Manohar Azagaonkar Rs 65,189, Miccky Pacheco Rs 66,393
Jose Philip Rs 25,488. These are the modest to good guys who must be
re-elected. As for the others, these are the guys who get the All India NO.1
status for Goa and therefore the front runners to be re-elected. Who wants
to know that their begging bowl will also be hocked in good time?

We at goasuraj have given up educating our Goans. They are not sensible
people. They are much more than that. They are extraordinary people that
even Jesus Christ would be jealous of. Why? They will accept hunger for 365
x 24 hours, throw away their hard-earned tax money at the disposal of these
rascals to blow and instead be happy about it. This is the breed that will
willing be whipped and bleed to death but still go on praising these rascals
and get them re-elected.

Ten years ago, I worked my a**e off to put together a SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE
thinking that smart Goans will perhaps opt for it and consign the CONGRESS
looters to the dust-bin. How sadly wrong I was. The RASCAL here is the SYTEM
of GOVERNANCE that is in use and flouted as the best.

A sad day for GOA, indeed.

The La Paz bill is
awaited.

Flag Hoisting, I say NO TO PORVORIM.
Panjim or Panaji is the Capital city of the State.
This place at Old Secreatariest is the best view for the FLAG Hoisting.
The traffic is suspended for few hours and not for the whole day.
Flag Hoisting at the the Old Secretariat have the greatest view,
The old building the Flag Post and the Mandovi River,
that don't look beautiful?
The Flag at the New Secretariat will be hidden and will not be seen.
Porvorim is a Vaddo of Village Socorro, and where the new Secretariat is
falls
into village Penha de Franca, and is called Alto Betim, correct me if I am
wrong,
why it is said Secretariat at PORVORIM?
Advogad Airis must have find out and written something on this,
instead of saying MOVE THE FLAG HOISTING FUNCTIONS TO

Re: [Goanet] Caste and Creed in Goa

2010-08-11 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Dear Vasant,
Christians must not practice caste. Period. THEY MUST NOT/SHOULD NOT in
professed egalitarian spirit-have anything to do with caste. This is true,
and complex as may become more apparent by the end of this post.

The charm of  most system is they inherently involve exogamy and endogamy;
although remarkably not exclusive Of course people do not wish to loose
their sense of belonging, and others want/seek parity and even benign
equality, They cannot deal with the idea of being Outcast themselves, but
the idea of knowing where they stand as in Tum Konnalo is admirably
ingenious don't you think? Most of the are from reasonably superior stock
anyways. Besides the Hindus do not need this except for deeper specifics. I
lived with a Hindu family for five year, and Baba would say, te vihirintle
pav kha'un bhatle gele, but considered me as part of the family. An outsider
who had come in,

Often people want different things in various aspects of their lives. Even
ones (both Goan Hindus and Christians) who may not say out loud---who and
what they, or where their antecedents stretch from--have the security of
being part of something--a certain way of being, which also involves who one
loves, marries, what one eats, how one dresses, etc, etc. Modernity brings a
certain levelling, but not always a change in thinking--towards seeing a lot
less more, of certain pasts. How much more? I think that depends on the
individual, their hurts and personal banshees.

Finally, the idea of Jesus and caste hankerings is a peculiar Indian
Christian issue. Very often the reminders to Christians of Jesus' Way (say,
Love, also Rejection) come from non-Christians. Its admirable (as in full of
Love) when done in the right spirit.

In 2000 I did a piece, Cherub visitation, where these cherubs are visiting a
Dwarpala--essentially wanting to learn from the big entity, and share. Btw,
in this vein there is a book, which freaked a lot of Indians--The Unknown
Christ of Hinduism.Caste. To my mind, non-Christians often remind Christians
of Jesus and Caste, to suggest tangentially. that they expect more from the
Indian Christian. Again very admirable when done in egalitarian spirit and
laudable (laudatio)

[Goanet] SOS as Mumbai oil spill spreads

2010-08-11 Thread lindray veloso

MUMBAI: The oil spilling out from MSC Chitra (seen on Sunday, at left)
off Mumbai’s coast has started hitting the shores, making the ship a
major environmental hazard for Mumbai and its surrounding coastal areas.

The Mumbai Port Trust has closed down its navigational channel for
bigger ships as MSC Chitra tilted nearly 75 degrees and 250 of its 1,219
containers carrying hazardous chemicals fell into the sea. The
Panamanian vessel had collided with St Kitts-flagged vessel Khalijia 3
km off the city’s coast on Saturday.

State environment minister Suresh Shetty described the situation as very
serious. The Coast Guard, the Navy as also port officials have expressed
inability to contain the spill as the ship is tilted. The oil has spread
to a 2 km area around the ship and has already touched Awas village in
Raigad. The slick was also seen near Uran and Elephanta. Chitra has
2,662 tonnes of fuel oil, 283.8

Hi Everyone,

Let me tell you that with an OCI document obtained, the person gets aLife
Long Visa with OCI ID Number, containing photo, signature and other details

Should one loose their passport or renew their passport then the Authority will

No more of re applying for OCI comes in.

PIO/OCI to be issued long term visas

 HERALD REPORTER
 PANJIM, AUG 10
The Union Home Ministry has asked all the Indian missions

 persons of
 Indian origin.
Commissioner for NRI Affairs Eduardo Faleiro told reporters
 here that
there were lots of complaints from the Goans who hold
 foreign
passports that they had to come on tourist visas which is
 valid only
 for three months.
I had received several complaints from Goans holding
 foreign
passports that some of our embassies and High Commissions
 abroad,
issue them tourist visas (valid for three to six months) at
 the end of
which they have to leave the country though they have
 property matters
to deal with and have families here, Faleiro said adding
 that
following the complaints he had taken up the issue with
 Union Home
 Minister P Chidambaram.
The home minister has assured me in writing that granting
 of tourist
visas to PIOs was not correct and that he was advising
 missions
concerned as well as the foreigners regional registration
 office in
Goa to ensure that the long term visas are issued to the
 said category
of persons and these visas are extended from time to time,
 Faleiro, a
former minister of state for external affairs, further
 said.
Faleiro also gave the media a copy of an official letter
 from
Chidambaram, in which the home minister has appealed to all
 PIO to
apply for the PIO or the Overseas citizen of India (OCI)
 card.
If they apply for either the PIO or the OCI card, they can
 stay in
India for 15 years (in case of the PIO card) and 30 years
 (in case of
the OCI) card. I would request you to advise them to apply
 for either
the PIO card or the OCI card, Chidambaram has said in his
 letter
 written to Faleiro last month.
The union home minister has also sought a list of
 mission/embassies
and high commission abroad who are in the habit of issuing

wrote:

My response: quite interesting posting of Mr. Michael prompts me to ask
a few questions: 1) granted that it's not the true picture of Jesus, but
where on earth one can find the true picture of Jesus?

***Dear Dr.U.G.Barad,
Your reaction does not correspond to the picture of Jesus, to which
Michael Fernandes and Albert are referring. It is not the picture of his
face, but the portrait or features of the personality of Jesus of Nazareth,
whom Mahatma Gandhi would admire.
Leonard Da Vinci has interpreted it artistically, whereas Dan Brown has
distorted it historically. It is the Last Supper
which is fundamental for Christian movement. We can develop this point
later.

2) does not your posting

make ones mind prejudiced who thinks that all pictures in all churches are
of Jesus in whom they believe wholeheartedly?

**You are wrong: We would not claim to have a photo of Jesus in the
churches. It is artistic, but genuine representation.
We have the real presence of the glorified Christ in the Eucharist.

Lastly, if it's not the true

picture of Jesus why the big fuss from Christian community?

***Dear Dr.U.G.Barad,
Your conclusions are fanciful.
1.It is true picture, because it is the representation of the historical
Jesus of Nazareth.

2.Jesus lived as a historical person. He started the Christian movement that
has revolutionised the whole world. We Christians do believe in him as the
Son of God, the Redeemer of the World. He spoke about his identity. Being a
Master recognized in the world, he is to be accepted for what he said and
did.

3. It is not necessarily a physical photo of Jesus. I have not seen the
photos even of my own paternal grandparents. It does not mean that they
never existed. Jesus existed and spoke of his Father, God. The Father and I
are One (Jn 10:30).

4. What is the big fuss from Christian community? We have enough
testimonies within the Christian community as well as outside the community
about the life, death, Resurrection of Jesus, the Lord..

  Goans in London remembered
The

Melody King of Goa late Alfred Rose

The members of International Voice for Romi Konknni - UK and few Goans came
together on 5th of August 2010 to pay rich tributes to the Melody King of Goa
late Alfred Rose on his 78th Birth Anniversary. The meeting was organised in a
short notice to remember our Goan konkani  singer who  was truly responsible to
spread out the konkani language all over the world through his songs and music.

In the begining the President of the International Voice for Romi Konknni-UK
Mr.

Floriano Fernandes remembered late Alfred Rose by saying that  he was the
legend

of konkani stage and a singer par excellence. He pointed out that the unique
singer had truely spreaded the real voice of Konkani language through out the
world through his songs and music and to be called as the Ambasador of Konkani
Language. He was the first konkani actor to organise the Konkani tiatrs and non
stop konkani shows in London, Africa, Middle East, Canada and in many other
parts of India. He was the first to bring out the Konkani  Audio cassettes and
LPs. He was also the first non stop Konkani Musical show organiser with the
members of the band on stage.

Mr. Fernandes reminded Goans that he had already submitted a memorandum to the
Goa Govt. and chairman of the Kala Academy to name the Open Air Hall of the
Kala

Academy after this great singer as Alfred Rose Open Air Hall . But the Goa
govt. is still sleeping on the issue and had not shown any interest even after
two years. This is another case of ill treatment getting to the konkani lovers
from our own Goa Govt. By doing such things our Govt. had proved once again
that

they are out to destroy the Romi Konkani language and the total Konkani Culture.

Another speaker Mr. Filipe Barreto of Quepem supported that the Kala Academy
open air hall should be named after the beautiful voice singer late Alfred Rose
and he should be posthumously awarded the highest cultural award by our
govt.Mr.

Jose Gomes of Velsao said our govt. have named the airconditioned hall of the
Kala Academy after the Marathi actor but the Goans who had worked hard to
promote Konkani language, music producers, actors and singers were left in the
dark thereby treating the konkani people as the second class citizens of Goa.

At the end a resolution was passed to be sent to Goa govt. onbehalf on Goans
working in London requesting them that late Alfred Rose should be remembered by
one and all by naming the Open Air Hall of the Kala Academy. The meeting ended
by saying his famous konkani song 'Rochnar Dev niddhonk Nam'

Vanxim village up for grabs

2010-08-11
By Miguel Braganza

No one is telling the story of Vanxim as it is. The Church is NOT
'selling' the land to a 'Bangalore based Developer'. The Estate Officer
of the Archdiocese, acting on the Power of Attorney of the Archbishop,
has already SOLD the rights to the land to a Goa-based broker.

He in turn has sold it to a Bangalore-registered company for arguably
many times the value at which he bought the rights from the Archdiocese
of Goa and its subsidiary institution that has the right to the said land.

The Goa broker has also given a commitment to finish the work of
CONVERSION left incomplete by the Patriach of the East Indies (P.I.O.).
The conversion from agriculture to settlement zone for housing and
possibly to Other Industries, including hospitality.

Hospitality includes hotels, golf clubs, marinas and the like. I have
just seen what this kind of development can do ... looking at
paragliders below me, sitting on the 21st floor balcony of a hotel right
on a sandy beach in Penang, Malaysia. The hotel was appropriately called
Paradise. Paradise Lost was more appropriate, I thought.

[Goanet] 2010 Goan Convention, press release

2010-08-11 Thread George Pinto
PRESS RELEASE

From: Vaishali Sawant
www.GoanConvention.com

The Biggest and Best Goan Convention to date. Over 300 Goans gathered in New
Jersey for the 10th Biennial Convention, Secaucus, July 3-5th, 2010.

The Goan Convention took place over the July 4th weekend at the Crowne Plaza
Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey (just 3 miles outside New York City). There were
over 300 people in attendance including adults, youth and children. This
Convention had the highest turnout overall and the most number of youth than
any previous convention. The 3 day weekend was filled with many activities for
all ages and a social platform for people from all over North America, England
and Goa to unite and network.

From its inception 20 years ago, the goals of the convention have remained
steadfast: to give the entire Goan community a way to channel and foster that
pride so that our heritage can still flourish even an entire world away. It is
of the utmost importance to preserve the things that make us who we are.
Without doing so, we lose our identity and our individuality, especially in a
melting pot like America.

The Convention served as a fantastic medium through which our uniqueness was
brought to light. For some, it brought back fond childhood memories of growing
up in Goa. For others, it was a glimpse into a place where they have never
been, but peculiarly enough, could still call “home”.

The key mission during the Convention was to make sure the Youth got involved
and continued the Goan traditions and culture so they can eventually pass on
their heritage to their children. A prime example of this was this years’
Convention committee. It was organized by a group of Youth for the first time
in its 20 year history. It was headed by President: Vaishali Sawant (NJ),
Activities Director: Ameeka Borkar (NJ), Treasurer: Priti Vemulapalli (NJ),
Secretary: Ashvini Sawant (NJ), Public Relations: Roma Kamatmhamai (CT) and
Volunteer Coordinator: Rhea Hodarkar (NY). This was also the first time the
committee consisted of all young women. The attendees were all extremely
impressed at the collaboration of this Youth committee to bring fresh new ideas
making for a successful Convention.

The activities of the weekend consisted of lectures by Goan community members
including Dr. Anthony Gomes, Mr. Christopher Nunes and George Pinto/Filomena
Giese/Acaria Shilla Almeida of Goa Sudharop. There were classes on Konkani
Language Basics as well as a class on Learning how to put on a Sari Tie for
the Youth.

The biggest hit was the Bollywood dance class where adults and youth were
taught basic dance moves from Hindi movies. Everyone became a Bollywood star
that day. There was also a picnic where the attendees wore Convention t-shirts
and participated in soccer games, badminton, family games and even Anthakshari.

There was an abundance of Goan culture from Authentic Goan food dishes,
folklore songs, traditional dances and even a taped speech by the Chief
Minister of Goa, Shri Digambar Kamat. On one evening, the 21 and over Youth
were taken via bus to New York City to a club where they were able to socialize
with other youth and made connections that will hopefully last a lifetime.

On July 5th at the closing ceremonies, the 2012 Goan Convention was handed over
to Mahendra Shama Kenkre to be held in Detroit, Michigan. We hope that they
continue the Goan traditions and keep the youth involved for years to come.
Best of Luck to them!
