[Goanet] Illegalities And Not Irregularities Mr. Shirodkar

2011-09-25 Thread Freddy Fernandes
Illegalities And Not Irregularities Mr. Shirodkar

We had heard that there were no drugs, no corruption and no illegal mining in
Goa, for all that matters it's been proved that there are drugs in Goa, along
with corruption and illegal mining, now out comes Mr. Subhsah Shirodkar and
goes a little further, categorically stating that none of the Congress members,
nor the Government of Goa is involved in illegal mining but how is it that
illegal mining still flourishes in Goa, Mr Shirodkar ? Is it not the Congress
that is the government in Goa or are we in Karnataka ? If Mr. Subhash Shirodkar
is right, which is highly unlikely, but even then, is it not the duty of the
ruling government to stop illegal mining and illegal sale of ore and take
action against those involved in it ? So why has the Congress failed to do what
they should have been doing in the first place ? Mr. Shirodkar should certainly
put money where his mouth is !

It is proved beyond doubt that there is large scale illegal mining in Goa and a
huge amount of unaccounted ore has been exported, costing the Goan treasury
thousands of crores, as has been identified and acknowledged by Justice Shah,
so, is it not the responsibility of the Government, to see that the exchequer
is not robbed of it's valuable resources ? If Congress, the ruling
dispensation in Goa is not able to safe guard our valuable resources, what
right does it have to stay in power ? If the ruling Government cannot protect
and safeguard what belongs to all Goans they should resign, because we Goans
have been deprived of the benefits that we were due for, only because of the
Congress inefficiency and greed.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has been the minister for mines for around a
decade, should he not be held responsible for the loot of our precious
resources ? There is absolutely no doubt that all most all Congress as well as
the other MLA's are involved in illegal mining one way or the other but have
covered their tracks well but truth cannot be kept hidden forever. One has
already seen the back of the cage because of illegal mining and the rest will
sooner or later be in a similar position. If not for personally being involved,
which is highly unlikely, they should be locked in the cage for negligence that
has cost the exchequer huge sums of money.

Mining in Goa is a multimillion dollars industry, a legacy of the Portuguese.
God or Nature, as one believes, was generous enough to Goans to fill it's
underbelly with rich ore, for the sustenance of it's inhabitants. Unfortunately
a few elite have hijacked this multimillion dollar industry and gone on rampage
for their own personal financial enhancement, leaving the inhabitants in a
limbo and in dire state, as our environment and our ecology is devastated by
large scale and illegal mining. Agriculture as well as both human and animal
live has been affected by the receding water tables and high levels of
pollutions causing severe health problems, which has now led to dissent and
opposition everywhere in Goa.

Studies have shown that if atrocities against our environment and ecology are
not stopped and remedial steps not taken now, we are bound to pay a very heavy
price, in the very near future. It is indeed difficult to understand the apathy
of our government towards our environment and our ecology and the failure to
comprehend the dangers inherent in excessive mining, as we have already
experienced, though mild, the wroth of nature on more than one occasion. We
should not be playing with nature, a slight imbalance could cause havoc with
life and property, nature, should not be taken for granted just because we are
yet to see the full force of the fury of nature, it is certainly better to be
safe than sorry and this fear certainly not fictional.

Mr. Shriodkar tries to highlight the differences between illegalities and
irregularities which is indeed amusing, should irregularities be condoned or
forgiven ? Mr. Shirodkar's argument clearly exposes his malafide intent, to
twist facts and words to benefit himself and his fellow party men. Mining
without a NOC from the environmental agency or any other required bodies is an
irregularity or an illegality ? There are documents that are a prerequisite
before starting a mine and lack of any of these documents make the mine illegal
and for the kind information of Mr. Shirodkar there is certainly a very vast
difference between irregularities and illegalities and mining without any of
these prerequisite documents is an illegality and not an irregularity. I am
sure most of Mr. Shidorkar's political colleagues will be confused with the
difference between irregularities and illegalities but certainly not us.

Can Mr. Subhash Shirodkar justify more than 400 mines in a small state like Goa
? No doubt mining contributes a major chunk to the Goan coffers but there in no
doubt that what actually comes to the State's coffers in just peanuts co

Unable to cope up with the unemployment, youths, sometimes, left with no

Comment:
Mr. Lopes, yours is a sad indictment of medical care accessible by Goans
in Goa.
The consensus  after 40 years in the fight  against cancer is that Hodgkin's
Lymphoma is curable in many cases.
   " "  Expectations (prognosis)
Hodgkin’s disease is considered one of the most curable forms of cancer,
especially if it is diagnosed and treated early. Unlike other cancers,
Hodgkin's disease is often very curable even in late stages.
With the right treatment, more than 90% of people with stage I or II Hodgkin's
lymphoma survive for at least 10 years. If the disease has spread, the
treatment is more intense but 90% of people with advanced disease survive 5
years.
Patients who survive 15 years after treatment are more likely to later die from
other causes than Hodgkin’s disease.
People with Hodgkin’s lymphoma whose disease returns within a year after
treatment or do not respond to the first-line therapy have a poorer prognosis.
You need to receive regular doctor's exams and imaging tests for years after
treatment. This helps your doctor check for signs of the cancer returning, and
to check for any long-term effects of treatments.""

[Goanet] College to boost rural women

2011-09-25 Thread Mervyn Lobo

By MASEMBE TAMBWE, 25th September 2011
The Daily News

RURAL women will soon get a lifetime opportunity with the coming of a social
work college to Tanzania, to be established by the Indian Government.

Barefoot College known as Social Work and Research Centre is an NGO founded by
Bunker Roy in 1972. It is a solar-powered school that teaches uneducated women
from impoverished villages to become doctors, solar engineers, architects, and
other such professions.

"It is a done deal," said the Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania, Mr Kocheril
Bhagirath.
Mr Bhagirath told the 'Daily News' in an exclusive interview that the Minister
of State President's Office, Public Service Management, Ms Hawa Ghasia, had
made a formal request and the response was positive.

He said the High Commission was in the
process of writing up an offer notice showing that they would provide trainers
and equipment after a building to house the college has been put up.

"The receiving country decides the location of the college and provides a
building. India brings trainers and equipment," he explained.

Through the Indian Technical Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, over 15
women who could neither read nor write have already enjoyed the benefits of a
six-week training in India.

The High Commissioner said the coming of the college will have a huge impact on
the rural economy, as the country is blessed with plenty of sunshine, adding
that education for women means minimizing many problems.

The Minister of State, President's Office, Public Service Management, Ms Hawa
Ghasia, said during the ITEC Day last week that the government sought to have
the college established at home after the incredible results from the 15
trained women.

Ms
Ghasia said in Karatu district, over 400 households now have electricity
thanks to eight women who only hold a certificate of primary school education
who were trained at the Barefoot College in 2008.

"We are currently holding a dialogue with the Indian High Commission to have
women trained here in Tanzania," she explained.

She said connection to electricity cost as low as 40 US dollars. ITEC was
established by the Government of India in 1964 to facilitate sharing of
experience, transfer of technology, capacity building and the development of
human resources between developing nations.

Between 1994 and 2010 over 1,500 public service employees have attended ITEC
training programes. Mr Bhagirath said that India and Tanzania were key partners
in capacity building, with Tanzania registering impressive strides in utilizing
175 training slots in 2010, the highest for any African country, and the second
highest offered by
 India.

[Goanet] JUDICIAL ACCOUNTABILITY

2011-09-25 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Chief Justice of India and all Supreme Court judges have furnished
details of their assets on the official website. Some of the retired
Supreme Court judges have even voluntarily displayed their assets.
Though a meeting of the judges of the Bombay High Court had taken a
decision on 2nd September 2009 to declare their assets there seems to
have been no follow up action. Why is it taking the Bombay High Court
over two years to comply with one of its own decisions? Is it that
some judges want to conceal their assets from the public domain?

Panjim, St Inez and neighbouring areas, professionals in varied fields
but motivated by a deep love for music, came together to "do something
for our beautiful Goa through choral music". It is named after the
Konkani word for *praise*.

In 2009-10, Studi performed in Saligao, Chinchinim, Aldona, Margao,
Porvorim and Panjim under the direction of Nauzer Daruwalla and Nigel
Dixon. It is entirely a labour of love. Members meet every Monday and
Wednesday at the Kala Academy's Rehearsal Hall from 6.30 pm to 8 pm.

This was the first concert for Stuti in the year 2011. According to
information released here, it will be performing in Bangalore on
December 15, 2011, in a Christmas Music Festival being organised by
the *Deccan Herald*, alongside Mumbai's famed Paranjoti Choir, and
other performers from Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore...

Cashing on patients misery
A patient was treated for Hodgkin lymphoma at designated Hospitals under
Mediclaim facility. After completion of the cycles of chemotherapy the
report did not recommend or give any hope for further treatment All the
tests conducted indicated that it has spread far and beyond and any further
administration of medicines were purely to prolong life a while. The
patient in hope and recommendation approached the cancer specialists
associated with a reputed hospital He raised hopes and assured of false
cure. first by trying one cycle , then went on 2 more and wanted to
administer 3 more cycles, costing nearly Rs6= The doctor was well aware
that the patient had mediclaim and was not recommended further chemotherapy,
as that was not going to be curative. The knowledge was available to the
specialist and yet he played on the misery of the patient to fleece her on
death bed. Finally .the patient was recommended to the Govt hospital, when
she was unable to bare the financial burden The patients treated on
Mediclaim are poor patients , and yet the specialist further burdened the
patient with another Rs 6= The ethics are gone to the winds, but are
eager to milk any one to their advantage When the specialized Cancer
Hospital at Mumbai had given its well documented diagnosis of final verdict
of in curability, as the disease had widely spread Is it not cheating poor
patient , with false hopes? Is this Doctor , so called popular specialist ,
thinking of his own gain and profit to the refereed Hospital. ? This
corruption in this circumstance is nothing short of day light robbery.
The suffering of patients are being fed on false hopes
God forbid, how many more unknowing patients are subjected to this type of
deceit

[Goanet] Feni a goan drink of choice

2011-09-25 Thread Nelson Lopes
Aroma Of Feni
Many years ago an NRI suggested to me to try and knock off the smell of the
Feni drink He also suggested to pack the tender Coconut water He also asked
to me build 1000 tree nests for the birds in the trees and record their
sounds of music He was willing to finance the projects
The feni of coconut and caju were sent for analysis by him in Bombay, to see
the possibility of knocking out the aroma, which according to him made the
drink obnoxious. The result as I remember vaguely now 40 years later was
that removing the aroma made the feni watery It was also mentioned that
this drink contains aldehydes ,Ketones, esters, which make the feni harmful.
The second idea was to mask the aroma, so that it was more palatable But as
we know, we prefer the drink pure and unadulterated. The idea of bottling
tender coconut water was believed to put pressure on the availability of
coconut of daily use and mass consumption Nevertheless the product tested
insipid and no match to the fresh tender coconut water. I tried the bottled
tender coconut water at Gujarat and it is not worth it Nobody was willing to
put up 1000 nests and record the sounds and music of the birds
The Feni in 1952 influenza epidemic was considered to be the most potent
medicine and widely used I remember dispensing it to the boarders, daily
at night in measured quantities
well I thought of sharing something I remembered The thrice distilled
bottled Feni is costlier and competes with some of the popular Whisky
This local drink to day is highly adulterated and authenticity of its purity
, genuineness is suspect Toddy tappers as professional are in short supply
and the wood required for distillation is priced exorbitantly If not
encouraged by Govt support, this Goan popular drink will soon be archived.
It is difficult to get toddy for preparation of Sannas.

[Goanet] Eat your fish, you’re less likely to get a stroke

2011-09-25 Thread Camillo Fernandes

The source of the below post is www.firstpost.com and not dailymail.com as
wrongly mentioned in my earlier post. Sorry for the error.

http://www.firstpost.com/living/eat-your-fish-youre-less-likely-to-get-a-stroke-91951.html

Eat your fish, you’re less likely to get a stroke
People who eat fish a few times each week are slightly less likely to suffer a
stroke than those who only eat a little or none at all.
That’s the conclusion of an analysis of 15 studies, each of which asked people
how frequently they ate fish, then followed them for between four and 30 years
to see who suffered a stroke.
“I think overall, fish does provide a beneficial package of nutrients, in
particular the omega-3s, that could explain this lower risk,” said Dr. Dariush
Mozaffarian, a Harvard School of Public Health epidemiologist whose research
was included in the analysis.
“A lot of the evidence comes together suggesting that about two to three
servings per week is enough to get the benefit.”
Close to 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke each year, and 136,000 die
from it. Smoking, drinking, being overweight and having high blood pressure and
cholesterol are all linked to a higher risk of stroke.
Dr. Susanna Larsson and Dr. Nicola Orsini of the Karolinska Institutet in
Stockholm, Sweden wrote in the journal Stroke that omega-3 fatty acids in fish
might lower stroke risk through their positive effects on blood pressure and
cholesterol.
Vitamin D, selenium and certain types of proteins in fish may also have
stroke-related benefits, Mozaffarian added.
Data for the analysis came from close to 400,000 people age 30 to 103. The
studies were done in the U.S., Europe, Japan and China.
Over anywhere from a few years to a few decades, about 9,400 people had a
stroke. Eating three extra servings of fish each week was linked to a
six-percent drop in stroke risk, which translates to one fewer stroke among a
hundred people eating extra fish over a lifetime.
And the people in each study who ate the most fish were 12 percent less likely
to have a stroke that those that ate the least.

Those who start eating fish are less likely to get a stroke, says a new study.
REUTERS/Zoubeir SouissiMozaffarian’s own report separated the effects of
different kinds of fish and found that people who ate more fried fish and fish
sandwiches didn’t get any stroke benefit, not surprisingly.
But the research can’t prove that adding more non-fried fish to your diet will
keep you from having a stroke. People who eat a lot of fish, Mozaffarian told
Reuters Health, “could have healthier diets in other ways, people could
exercise more, people could have better education that could lead them to see
their doctors more.” All of those things might decrease their risk of stroke.
Still, he added, most studies have tried to take those other health and
nutrition factors into account to isolate the effects of fish as much as
possible — and they suggest a cause-and-effect relationship.
It’s likely, Mozaffarian said, that people who start out eating no fish or very
little probably have the most to gain by putting it on their plate more often.
“You get a lot of bang for your buck when you go from low intake to moderate, a
few servings per week,” he said. After that, the benefit from each extra
serving probably goes down.
Fatty fish such as salmon and herring are especially high in omega-3s. The
American Heart Association recommends at least two servings of fatty fish in
particular each week.

[Goanet] Care for Process MindMap A Nonfiction project in Copenhagen, Denmark by Di Ponti • send message

2011-09-25 Thread Frederick Noronha
I met Diwhen she was in Goa, and she traces her
roots to this region. Interesting ideas... FN

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1320897449/care-for-process-mindmap

About this project

We want to create a simple, useful guide that allows groups of people
to integrate their ideas and fully harness the potential of human
collaboration: a MindMap.We know that collective can be greater than
what any single person can achieve. But we also know that all too
often, human potential and innovation gets squashed when people come
together.  Hierarchy emerges, process is ignored and ideas are
suppressed.  Think of those meetings and projects where some voices
are heard over others. Or meetings that don't inspire us to dedicate
ourselves fully because we don't feel like the project is ours.
We will create a tool that allows people in any context (schools,
non-profits, NGO's, government, science labs, business) to really put
their minds together.
What will it look like?  A poster!  Made of paper!  Although we're
well versed in sophisticated software that allows for collaboration
(and will be using it in our process) our goal is to create a MindMap
that is as powerful as it is simple.  Something that can be used in
any context--from a boardroom to a classroom--and can act as a
template for face-to-face as well as virtual interactions.

We are an interdisciplinary collective of facilitators. We all come
from and work with very diverse groups. We work with kids, public
administration, business people, academics, communities, artists,
collectives, youngsters, activists and NGOs and with all sorts of
teams.  At the core of our philosophy is 'care for process.' We draw
knowledge and inspiration from our study of wiki systems (our group
first met at WikiSym2010) and 4th Wave Feminism, a a feminism that
empowers and inspires inclusion and appreciation of diversity;
understands that participation is political and that the way we
construct communication influences decision-making processes.

We have spent a year collaborating electronically and explored the
subjects of care, work, process, feminism, empowerment, recognition,
collectives, companies, instituitions, groups, societies and the world
at large. We talked to female leaders, male carers, friends, lovers,
and people who explored and lived these themes with us. We presented
at activist and academic settings, we wrote poems, we conducted
trainings, we skyped and dreamt. We met once all together face-to-face
and produced a book: http://www.booki.cc/careforprocess.

Now, we want to turn that book into a MindMap that the world can use.
To do this, we need your help.  Take a step towards setting the
process in motion and contribute whatever you can.

COMMENT : Hey Mr. Simon Majundar, you seem to be damn good a
connoisseur. I’d suggest you also try what else we get in Goa, like ‘Sorpatel,
Butch, Chourisam,’ etc. Then there are even some Philipinno joints out here that
serve you dog meat, goes well with the nut Feni caju ;-))

Yes. I think Falcao needs to elaborate more about the conspiracies and ethics
in the two opinions he has posted below. I tried to see if there was any
mention made of research scientists, politicians, nexus, global conspiracies or
mafias in them. I did not find any. The first opinion describes the public
relations tactics used by pharmaceutical companies to sell drugs. It talks
about the emergence of companies employing journalists and medical writers to
write articles promoting new drugs in medical journals, and  the solicitation
of influential academics to act as authors. No claim is made that the medical
information provided in those articles is false, or that the listed authors are
not required to have any input and approve of what is written. The second
opinion is a diatribe against the pharmaceutical company Novartis. It implies
that Marxism would be better than Capitalism. It laments that drugs are
expensive when they ought to be distributed
freely or at least sold at cheap prices. It blames corporate greed, and unjust
property rights and patent laws for this circumstance. It claims that the
current legally instituted patent granting system is a crime against humanity.

So yes, assuming that these opinions are valid and generally applicable, Falcao
needs to elaborate on the conspiracies and ethics, and point out the
non-existent mention of research scientists, politicians and the nexus between
them.

Cheers,

Santosh

COMMENT : I regret to state that there is enough clarity on this issue,
but profound blindness on the part of some who want to behave like ostriches.
The conspiracy and eroded ethics is clear here:

Do I need to elaborate more about conspiracies and ethics? About unholy
nexus of Drug Companies and Research scientists and Politicians?

Re: [Goanet] Simon Majumdar, Insult to Caju Feni

2011-09-25 Thread Freddy Fernandes
My love hate affair with the Elixir of the Gods, as Cecil so rightly put it,
started during my very young days, when I use to be amused to see mom light
fire to this very strong smelling liquid for a while then put it off, add a
little sugar to it and give me a spoonful to drink whenever I had a bad cold
and cough and more often than not it would help, but at that tender age I just
hated it, the burning sensation in the mouth and while I unwillingly swallowed
it, it felt like live coals going down my elementary canal to the pit of my
stomach and I just could not bear the strong smell too. Apart from Mom's
occasional medicinal dose I never ever touched liquor, not even beer but things
changed in College in Bombay.

Being good in sports was always advantageous in school and college, hence I was
one of those guys with lots of friends from both sexes, especially the rich,
and like most rich kid, my friends too use to party a lot even in the mid and
late seventies, it was then I started sipping beer but never graduated to the
stronger elixirs. I was just recovering from a bad accident, a few months after
my twentieth birthday, when I was mobile, the guys and girls from the college
football, hockey and basketball teams gave me a "treat" at one of our friends
place at Malabar Hill, his parents were out of the country and I was surprised
to note that all the drinks and food was only Goan, later I was told that they
had got the food and the drinks from an aunty from Sonapur, at whose joint one
our guy was a frequent visitor, a "Sindhi", he was an adherent fan of feni !

The party started with a glass of feni in my hand, though I hated the idea, I
went along with it and after all the pleasantries of being reminded by one and
all that I had crossed the threshold of manhood and into the second decade on
life and that they were happy that I was recuperating well and still standing,
even though with the help of a clutch, all the ahh's and the ooss started ! as
the guys and the girls tasted feni most of them for the first time, some had
watery eyes, some made funny faces, some coughed and puffed but after the first
hit, rest was smooth sailing, I on the other hand stood with a clutch in one
hand and the feni glass in the other, dreading the idea of swallowing live
coals but all of a sudden some one yelled "sala ! he Goechi ma ka pau feni pita
nahim hai kya ?" Then the count down started 10,9,8 ...1 go, it was bottoms up
! I had closed my eyes, knowing the effect and it was coals again hitting my
stomach, but slowly as the evening progressed, I started enjoying the feni, it
was good stuff, thanks to the "Sindhi" here on stated my love for feni.

I am not a habitual drinker, I drink occasionally, when I have company,
parties, picnics or if I have had a rough day, a couple of pegs before dinner
and I am relaxed, there are just two drinks that I prefer one is Cashew feni
and the Coconut dudxiri, and I prefer these to any other drinks in the world
and I have never ever have had a hangover or a bad taste in my mouth. I was
also involved with Cashew tenders for a decade, it was good business then and
cashew feni was looked up at and revered because of it's unadulterated and
genuine quality. During that time when I had visitors, outstation and overseas
I would proudly give them a couple of bottles of my Feni and dudxiri and some
of them use to write back to me thanking me for the joy that this unparallel
drink gave then. I was indeed proud of my feni !

Today when I read the hogwash that this damned Majumdar had to say about our
feni, it hurt, but thinking it over I have realized, he may have been a victim
of adulteration like so many others, which we cannot deny, today the feni both
Cashew and Coconut, that we get all over Goa with the exception of a few, is
certainly not genuine. One of the main reasons that the credibility of our
feni is questioned today is because every Tom, Dick and Harry wants to distill
feni without the know how nor do they have a good storage facility and the
wholesalers to make more money adulterate the feni, it's a real pity that for
the sake of money the authenticity and the credibility of our Goan feni is at
stake, so much so, that a drink that we Goans were once so proud of, is being
ridiculed by guys like Majumdar just because they don't know where to get the
genuine in a market that is flooded with made in China.

I would like to inform Mr. Majumdar that I visit Goa mostly in April-May and
would be more than happy to let him taste the "Elixir of the Gods" from my
cabinet and indeed prove that all in not lost for the Goan feni and that it is
still one of the most soothing and relaxing of drinks and is certainly among
the very best drinks in the world. Cheers !!

While I understand your noble intent - waving the flag for Goan achievers who

your purpose.

RESPONSE:
I'm sure Ms I. Nunes is a literary critic of great merit here in England,
although I've not heard of her. Perhaps like her hero Mark Twain, she writes
under an psuedonym. I shall keep a look-out for her distinctive style in the
Guardian or the Times.

However, Frederick being a journalist who studied in Sweden, he has been
trained to give as much information of the person, he is introducing into the
piece. So he always provides information either by way of profession or the
place they live in. And so he meant nothing more nor less when he introduced Dr
Antonio Gomes in such a manner.
