Towards a possible interaction of minds I would suggest that you and Subhashis Das get to know each other (perhaps you already do). Subhashis lives in Hazaribagh Jharkhand (I came to know of him through Xavier Dias, formerly of Jharkand) has been looking at Megaliths, the fertility cults, and mother goddesses for a long time. Dear Subhashis, I am posting this on Goanet so my people may know more about Megaliths. If I remember correctly, I had posted your site on Goanet some months ago. And a post by Dr.Nandkumar Kamat which appeared last year on [Goanet] How we put tiny Goa on the global rock art map 17 years ago-Part I- A peep into prehistoric Goan shamanism. http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg61224.html ++ Dear All, Do share any thoughts you may have. Send an email to eve...@goanet.org with contact details --- Dan, it's Gerard Street you're talking about. Little India it's still called, but the street has been truncated with Chinese and Korean businesses. Those Indian businesses that still exist, have undergone makeovers and do a thriving trade from Indian tourists, not from city residents. I don't know why those visitors would want to visit Little India when they themselves are from Big India, but it could be curiosity to see what their kind of shopping in the western world looks like. The reason for the reduction in the number of Indian stores at Gerard Street since the time you left, is that Indian merchants and restaurants have sprouted throughout the city wherever there is a south Asian pocket. Mississauga which you would remember as a hick town is now all gleaming and ritzy ever since Russian moneybags started investing in houses there about 15 years ago. Now, that suburb is the new immigrants' first choice to live if they have sufficient dinero. Get off any highway ramp and you are greeted with the sight of tall luxury residential condominium buildings. They used to be double the area and half the price 10 years ago but low interest rates and easy mortgage approvals have been culprits. T'O has changed a lot since the last 20 years, not all of it good. The major arteries haven't kept up with the increasing traffic on city roads. There is gridlock during commuting time and even through the non-peak day. The last couple of mayors haven't helped. The last one was a leftist wacko who was more interested in building bike lanes and the present one is a right-wing redneck whose idea of stopping the gravy train at City Hall is to increase taxes and cut manpower and services for those who most need them. Despite all that, the city has become better than ever, since most newcomers to Canada insist on living here. The money they bring doesn't do the metro any disservice and Toronto has always succeeded in being a model of wonderfully functioning diversity. When you come here, you'll still find the Marshall McLuhan environment and then some. The big shots keep on donating sizable sums to universities, entertainment, arts and culture. We are a far cry from New York which is still the centre of the world, but T'O continues to be a city well worth living in. At least in spring, summer and fall. I'll understand if you feel the craving to leave for Goa during our winters. Roland. Send an email to eve...@goanet.org with contact details --- I have made a few deletions. Thank you, Dom William. Eric. . Eric, In the seventies I was in the committee for translating the new liturgical texts for Konkani region, Of this bishop B S D'Souza was the convener and chair. He included me in the committee in the place of Raknno editor, A. F D'Souza. I attended a few meetings at Old Goa, and he dropped me because I refused to approve his 'personal' translation of the absolution formula for confession, not discussed in common. By this time his translation arrogance had reached the skies and had blocked publishing my NT in Konkani. It was finally done by the Bible Society of India, Bangalore. That committee was probably dissolved because after liturgical texts they did not meet to do a common Konkani Bible. So, Karnataka bishops became the committee for Karnataka, who after publication refused to give imprimatur for my Konkani Bible, which their censors did not read in toto, but wrote before taking up the text for examination in Raknno that it was not given imprimatur because I had not given 'Catholic footnotes.' Then Goa published the Bible, two years later Mangalore published another, both not from original languages of Hebrew and Greek, but from Jerusalem Bible. That is translation of translation of translation, first French, then English and then Konkani in two scripts! Recently I met Dr. Barboza, after a very long time, accidentally and he told me that they are revising the liturgical text of the mass in Konkani in Mangalore. If there is any other attempt to translate I do not know. So, I was surprised at the text you reproduced and wrote my query. The text looks like Monkri Konkani that is Monglluri Kristanv Konkanni as opposed to Bamonn Konkanni or Common Man's Konkanni written with great variety of sound and script. In a few weeks I would know if one of the Karnataka universities will accept open education project from me for Konkani MA (Language and Literature) and Ph. D. I for example, have clearly seen Colva once a scenic village now being converted into a filthy one; just a visit to the beach for instance is clear example of disgust and misgovernance. We have to rid ourselves of the known in-competant Politicians & Kind who have represented Benaulim for Huge Selfish Gains; and mostly winning via Cash, Alcohol, Illegal Favours and other incentives. I strongly believe that we can change the Politics for the better in Benaulim and make our beautiful village into a Model Constituency, which can set a Best Practice for others to follow. [Goanet] Copies to spare -- A Kind of Absence... Life in the shadow of history
--- Annual Goanetters Meet --- Annual Goanetters Meet - January 3, 2012 - 12:30 - 2pm Tourist Hostel, near the Old Secretariat, Panaji (Panjim) Planning to attend? Send an email to eve...@goanet.org with contact details --- Contact me. eric. --- A Kind of Absence Life in the shadow of history [Paperback] Joao da Veiga Coutinho (Author) 3.0 out of 5 stars An Exile from Paradise Lost, February 12, 2009 By Robert S. Newman "Bob Newman" (Marblehead, Massachusetts USA) This review is from: A kind of absence: Life in the shadow of history Goa, now a bustling, overcrowded, tourist haven on the Arabian Sea coast of India south of Mumbai, used to be a sleepy backwater lost to the world in a Portuguese colonial empire that had forgotten to look at the clock. A Portuguese-speaking elite dominated the place for many years, Catholic by religion, Indian by blood, and belonging almost exclusively to the Brahmin caste [which they had never discarded on conversion]. In 1961, when the Indian army arrived to expel the long-lingering Portuguese, this elite abruptly lost its privileges. Unlike say, the Soviet occupation of various places, nobody was shot, nobody jailed. All you had to do was join the new rulers, sit back and fume silently, or, if you desired, exile yourself to Portugal, North America, or anywhere you could find a secure spot. But now, absorbed into the new India, a nation teeming with linguistic, religious, ethnic, and caste minorities, Goans began to wonder "who am I and how do I fit into such an enormous society?" The present volume is a very intelligent, thoughtful, long essay on that topic. The author, a Catholic Brahmin ex-priest from an elite family living at the very center of the Indo-Portuguese world in Goa, ponders what it means to be Goan. Couched in clear, almost lyrical language, it is an attempt to establish a Goan identity, a series of inquiries conducted at times as a dialogue with persons unknown, or maybe with himself. The modern world, as the author notes, has created untold millions of people without much identity... the alienated masses, if you like. I admired this attempt and consider it a valuable book for Goans in particular and for anyone wishing to understand more about that small, coconut-palm shaded corner of the world. My criticism is that the book does not go far enough; the author cannot burst the bonds of his own past. Nobody can do that a hundred percent, fair enough. But if you are going to write on anthropological themes, you must, to some extent, get beyond your own perspectives and the biases you absorbed in childhood. Da Veiga Coutinho sees India as "the other", not as "us". It is alien and scary, dirty, crumbling, chaotic. He rejects any possibility that it could be "home". There are two kinds of Catholic Goans: the christianized and the lusitanized. The former are Catholic, but Indian in most sensibilities. They make up the vast majority of Catholic Goans... even if they disparage what they see as Bad Habits from Beyond the Ghats, they remain--to an outsider's eye, irrevocably Indian. The lusitanized Goans saw themselves as Portuguese, spoke Portuguese, and were actually able to fit into Portuguese society. These were a minority, many of whom now live in Portugal, Europe or North America. There is also a large class of English-educated Goan emigrants to [mainly] the Anglo-Saxon world. In their struggle to succeed and fit in, they have lost their identity to a large extent. Their travails are another matter, however, separate from the content of this book. The truth is that Goa has never ceased to be Indian over the centuries, no matter what the Church or the Salazar regime claimed. To recognize this is the necessary first step in forging a Goan identity. I feel that da Veiga Coutinho was still in denial. He felt more Portuguese than Indian. His personal story is interesting and poetic; his take on the whole matter is divorced from his Indian roots. http://amzn.to/vYf9H4 --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- ---

[Goanet] REVIEW: A Kind of Absence... Life in the shadow of history (Robert S Newman, Amazon.com)
--- Annual Goanetters Meet --- Annual Goanetters Meet - January 3, 2012 - 12:30 - 2pm Tourist Hostel, near the Old Secretariat, Panaji (Panjim) Planning to attend? Send an email to eve...@goanet.org with contact details --- A Kind of Absence Life in the shadow of history [Paperback] Joao da Veiga Coutinho (Author) 3.0 out of 5 stars An Exile from Paradise Lost, February 12, 2009 By Robert S. His personal story is interesting and poetic; his take on the whole matter is divorced from his Indian roots. http://amzn.to/vYf9H4 --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] India’s Best Networked NGO You Haven’t Heard Of (TOI)
--- Annual Goanetters Meet --- The annual Goanetters Meet is scheduled for the first week in January 2012. Details to follow. If you plan to attend, send an email to eve...@goanet.org with contact details so we could reach you once the details are finalized. --- India’s Best Networked NGO You Haven’t Heard Of Caritas India, the social arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, maintains a low profile but is present in almost every relief operation and has been around for 50 years. Critics call Caritas opaque. The NGO says it’s only interested in helping the needy By Ullekh NP http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Daily/skins/ETNEW/navigator.asp?Daily=ETM&showST=true&login=default&pub=ET On the morning of October 8, 2005, a devastating earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale shook Kashmir, leaving thousands dead and many more stranded. Uri resident Iqbal, remembers stepping out of his home to make some essential purchase. The next thing he knew was that he had lost many of his close relatives to what was later found to be the 17th deadliest temblor of recorded history. Iqbal, now 42 and who doesn’t want to disclose his surname, says he mourned his relatives only briefly because by then he was fighting for his own survival in Kashmir’s notorious winter. For the next two days, he managed to sleep in buildings that were still standing — but they were few — and he was so tired that he was ready to die than endure the biting cold. It was then that the Central teams arrived with what Iqbal calls “winterable” tents — these are winterproof tents used mostly by snow mountaineers. Planning commission member Dr Syeda Hameed says such tents have benefited many survivors. “I had seen people curled up inside them when I visited quake-hit areas back then. These tents helped them stay alive,” she recalls. Sure, these winter-proof tents were delivered to the needy by government agencies. But they were procured at short notice by a non-governmental agency that is not widely known. Unlike big players such as Oxfam, World Vision, Red Cross Society and others, Caritas (Latin for love) is not a familiar name. “I wouldn’t say we are the largest NGO in India, but we are the most networked one — nobody can beat us in connectivity,” says Fr Varghese Mattamana, executive director of Caritas India. He says the winter-proof tents had arrived from Turkey after Caritas India made an SOS call on its global network. “These tents first reached Delhi and the government helped us airlift most of them to Kashmir. The rest were carried in trucks,” he adds. “If those winter-proof tents had come late by a few more hours or a day, many more would have died in our neighbourhood and across Kashmir,” notes Iqbal. Iqbal, who says he owed his life to those who brought him “winterable” tents, is in a majority—those who haven’t heard of Caritas and its highly organised operations in the country. Golden Jubilee In fact, Caritas India celebrated the 50th anniversary of its existence in India this October. It is a member of the Vatican-based Confederation of Caritas Internationalis which exists in 168 countries and serves in more than 200 countries — interestingly, UN has only 193 members. Globally, Caritas is the biggest NGO network after the International Red Cross Society. Caritas India has only 105 members on its payroll. “But most of them are highly trained in specific operations, ranging from handling manmade calamities such as riots to natural disasters such as tsunami,” says Mattamana. What is it then that helped Caritas to take a lead role and aid governments in relief operations over the past five decades? It has been active since the 1970 Bangladesh Refugee Crisis and Gujarat quake (2001) to Tsunami (2005) to Khandamal riots (2008) and to Cyclone Aila (2009). “It has a huge network thanks to its connection with the church. Besides, it has a huge pool of volunteers — employees at the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI),” says a senior Delhibased executive at a global NGO, who asked not to be named. “The biggest advantage is they are present across the country’s hinterland,” he adds, emphasising that “they beat everybody else when it comes to ‘last-mile’ connectivity”. CBCI, the apex body for Catholics in India, which was set up in 1944, has 164 dioceses across the country, and has in its fold nearly 17,000 educational institutions — the likes of St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore, and Loyola College, Chennai — as well as more than 5,500 health centres. “And all these centres are part of our natural network. We hardly have to recruit outsiders when there is a crisis situation,” says Mattamana. Big Wingspr

Every year a charade is played in Goa religiously and without fail.. The charade starts with the night markets that spring up with the start of the tourist season. The authorities keep insisting that they are security risks and keep on delaying the various permissions required by the operators to start operations. This is just a ploy to extract more vitamin M from the organizers. The 'hafta' casts a wide net. Officials high and low covering a wide spectrum of Government Agencies and Ministries are all in the game. Every one is in suspense and then when all seems lost, the permissions are mysteriously given. All the previous objections like security risk, sound pollution, parking and traffic management are all swept aside with the stroke of a pen and hey presto every one carries on as usual laughing all the way to the bank. This is a classic example of how the threat of cancellation is used to extort. Solemn warnings are given that this is the last time such permissions will be given.
