[Goanet] Goa Elections 2012 - UNESCO petition
Recent press reports indicate that the Election Commission of India is sending only female supervisors to the forthcoming elections. I have to agree with this school of thought in this decision process that has nothing to do with being politically correct for this very important event in Goa. Would it be they are better administrators especially at counting and delivering returns on time? Today we will see the sixth sunset in the year of our Lord 2012. On 1st January 2012, the first sunrise, I, as a fellow Goykar, made a request for all to take part and be counted in the preservation of what is left of Goa's Natural Beauty by signing the UNESCO petition for a tiger reserve. Contrary to popular belief, it appears that the majority of our people, their family and friends in Goa and worldwide are not participating due to not knowing how to do so. Those of you with computer skills, switch on and encourage and show your friends and family how to take part in this. One person, one vote. With your permission, share your e-mail address with those who do not have one - its free, do this today, it takes less than two minutes. Do this for Goa, the land of our people and prevent a concrete wasteland with little or no green fields as fauna and flora dwindles in the state. Your vote will make local planners consider good governance. 1. Go to Goan Voice UK Welcome Page. 2. In its search box type in UNESCO petition and press Go. 3. Enter the UNESCO petition site and follow instructions. 4. An acknowledgement e-mail will be sent to your personal e-mail box which you must open and confirm to register your vote. You can do the same in the link provided on goanet. I heard at the recent NRI Goan Global Convention in London, United Kingdom last July there was a proposal to the Goa Government to provide for voting rights for NRI Goans. Nearly every household in the state has a family member outside Goa. Our family groups and blood relations are made up of Red, Black, Green and Blue passports contributing to the local and international economy. By taking part in the above electronic signup facility of the UNESCO petition you may assist the Goa Government, through the NRI office, to look at the feasibility of NRI electronic voters or forever hold your peace. Please sign the UNESCO petition now. Good luck and best wishes for success to the petition team for this project. Many hands make light work. [Goanet] Fwd: Annual Goanetters Luncheon Meet
Re-sending, as requested. Thank you. Betsy Subject: Annual Goanetters Luncheon Meet Hi Frederick, Thank you so much for taking the time to explain to us, in detail, all that is involved vis a vis Goanet: how it came into being, how it runs, how Goanetters contribute value with their postings, etc. that there are so many working (or slogging) behind the scenes, the desire to have a little space to sit for a little while to set up 'structures' (is that the right word?) and so on and so forth. Yes, it is our sincere desire too that, in the not too distant future, many of us will take up the challenges you have posted and come up with suggestions that, in the final analysis, will benefit all of us, especially those interested in OUR HOMELAND, GOA. We returned to our beloved Goa in June, 2008 (after five generations in Kenya) and wish to reiterate that we have already learnt a lot from reading the various subjects and postings on Goanet and indeed the GoaBook Club since then. Thank you for that. Our thanks to all those who have had the welfare of this activity close to their hearts!! Meanwhile, please do keep it going with the passion that you all have displayed, at all times. Incidentally, Herman's Grandmother is my Mum's sister and I am proud to add are the daughters of Wolfango D'Cruz, who hails from Saligao too. [Goanet] school assignments
School assignments They are intended to enhance self learning and motivate and supplement their knowledge Every subject has assignments and they have to be spaced throughout the months I did that as the head, but still the compliance was not satisfactory Often all the assignments are compressed at the last moment, merely to fulfill the requirement Holidays are stress free times, where the children can be directed. Practicals in science are mandatory, but carried out in breach in spite of having laboratory assistant He is often deployed for some other chores of the school The experiments are dictated and done in a group, except at std x .Practicals in Geography, Maths are hardly a priority in many schools There is no planning in giving assignments, according to the interest of the child and related text book topics. Guidance . limitations and scope of the topic is not specified There are no library books ,sufficient to meet the demands Available books are not classified and topics not categorised for the students too access The books are bought at the last moments depending on the grants and subject teachers are not selecting the books . The libraries are inadequate. The librarian once again is more busy with other routine administrative work of the office , more often than not. The timings for the laboratory assistant and the clerks and the Librarian are rarely observed. Most of the assignments done are a mere formality and about their evaluation less said is better I have seen students going to cyber cafes and merely getting print outs. I have never come across any assignments being rejected or asked to be redone when i perused the five best assignments of every subject teacher , I was disappointed to see their irrelevance and made my observations known to the teachers The reading habit among the teachers themselves and their interests and ability to direct the students is sadly lacking Many a assignments are done by others ,including the parents The purpose very often is defeated due to exigencies of time We had individual science practicals in school, without a laboratory assistant and when they were not compulsory at all Practicals cannot be substituted by another form of gaining knowledge We have seen highly educated individuals are no match to the a person handling the situation with practical knowledge Frogs may not be available for dissection easily as before, but can be harvested at the level of each place , by having a frog rearing pond That is the solution It is totally a different experience, feeling and first hand knowledge Even touching the frog i noticed creates aversion in students Some medical students have given up unable to face the cadavers they have to dissect to learn With my 35 years as the Head in eleven institutions ,I must confess honestly, that the standard of the assignments has not been satisfactory, in spite of my best efforts to motivate I suggested a teacher for an assignments on topics debated in the press, and which the students can easily access, it was mildly rejected as not of educational value and significance Even debates are scripted by the teachers or the parents ..Hence, where is the experiment of self motivation? I know a father writing the thesis of his daughter, a post graduate assignment and a student writing for her mother , a teacher, an essay competition The joy and experience of practical learning alone, ensures further appetite for learning and specially in science ,geography mathematics. among others You should not be surprised that work experience subjects are handled by teachers without any specific skills or training and there is any field or practical work. The content and scope has no facility. I am recalling my experiences in the state where I worked. The practical knowledge , self learning through books and internet are complimentary and are intended as substitutes . The guidance by a well informed by a well informed teacher is of paramount importance How many PhD. are , simply copied verbatim or written by surrogate and ghost writers in the past Nelson lopes Chinchinim --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] It is a different world
It is a different world The snow fall is not something we experience in our place, unless one has visited Simla Darjeeling Kashmir, Kulu Manali etc The snow flakes like falling rain are a thrilling sight The whole landscape is covered with a thick ,,white, blanket in varying thickness The roads are constantly sprayed with salt water to melt the ice The salt erodes the tar roads As and when necessary the shovel trucks move the ice to keep the roads motor able When it is a thick cover, it is a holiday and the roads are inaccessible Public transport system, except the trains are a rule Some enterprising youngsters offer to clear the porch and the drive way for pocket money Going out in this weather requires dressing up in layers with gloves and caps, as the temperatures dip to below freezing point, compared to 19 degrees centigrade , we are accustomed too The feeling of cold is a short distance from entering the car and just stepping out of it The locals seem to be well acclimatised to face the weather All types of winter apparels are available and our sweaters are of no use here There are bridges that are standing over a century.A number of fly overs Cris cross over a point. Honking is totally absent and there is order, system, discipline regulating the heavy traffic and accidents are rare even in two lane heavy movement. There is habitation close to the river front, but no littering or pollution of water Organic waste and recycling waste is periodically collected. at a fee Segregation is done at source. There is an excessive use of plastic, but no abuse and littering of the convenient material Every single item purchased has to be bagged and dispensed in plastic bags . Most of the containers , packing is in plastic, There is recycling process It is very difficult to find even a piece of paper, plastic any where on the roads or any surrounding, inhabited or not The variety of malls or stores are good past time, displaying all types of goods under one roof. The prices in terms of our purchasing power is out of bounds and prohibitively discouraging. Every conceivable, convenience is on display on any aspect of living They second name of the country i am told is convenience and it is very true. One is not haggled by disruption of water.electricity at any point of time The hotels are doing roaring business as most residents are habituated to eating outside very often and when they celebrate special occasions. I have experienced the cuisine at Mexican, Italian, Japanese Thai, among others and enjoyed their unique preparations and flavours The Japanese have a hot plate table around which the ordered food is prepared and served steaming hot The deacons attached to the church are married people with a preparatory course of three years They preach and take part in the mass, but are not paid any emoluments All types of fruits and vegetables are available and there is very strict control on expiry dates also in all food stuff One is amazed at the size of large size onions, seedless oranges and limes, red potatoes and cabbage, yellow and pink cauliflower, parsimon fruit that resembles tomatoes, red and grey pears, apples called grapple tasting like grapes tomatoes like grapes in size, red, raddish as small as grapes redish seedless grapes It is a world of different experience altogether. It gets complete dark by 4 o clock in the evening and so the time in winter is advanced by hour an half every day --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] [Photo Blog by Rajan Parrikar] Hvestunúpur
Photo Blog by Rajan Parrikar has posted a new item, 'Hvestunúpur' An array of flat-topped mountains, their snouts dipped in the fjord, punctuated by valleys is the signature sight in Iceland's Westfjords. This image of one such mountain, Hvestunúpur, was taken on Arnarfjörður. A better appreciation of the scape can be had from the air, and is seen in the image below, taken from Iceland Road [...] You may view the latest post at http://www.parrikar.com/blog/2012/01/06/hvestunupur/ Best regards, Rajan P. [Goanet] 3 Kings Feast - Kings journey through fields etc (video and pics
Video: 3 Kings Feast - Kings journey through field etc Once the kings leave the chapel (after feast mass) say around 12 noon, takes them upto another 3 hours to reach home. This is because the king and their entourage follow the traditional trail or way which is through fields etc.Besides, there are about 9 traditional stations or halts where people gather to be crowned (see video / Pic). About 3 such halts around the foothill followed by Xendo (fields), then in front of T. B Cunha ancestors’ house (There are 3 large houses in one row) locals often call them ‘Goemkars’ Traditionally, Pez or Kanji was served here. The next station would be at Albert Cunha House, Cuelim. I saw Shri Albert Cunha (11.12-12.40) after long time, last several years, he usually stay indoors. He was very popular at Churches, including Pilar with his white suit safari. Very good friend of mine. He was also active member of MGP (Lion) I think. Immediately, next halt would be between former Regidor and Dr. Marconi House followed by Barca where the kings come down and take a brief rest Last time we see 3 kings together is at the Church square, here all 3 lined up facing the Church, Laudate is sung and the 3 large flags (bonderam) are waved from right to left see video (19.44) From here the kings will go different ways, usually one goes backward (Cuelim) and the other two takes different route at Cansaulim market. This year, we saw one going to Velsao taking the route from behind the Cemetery.(22.25) Another intesting thing I have noted which is usually a two man band. I think we called it ‘Chermel’ or ‘Chermelam’ see 15.18. A man would play a drum (Dhol) and play ‘cornet’ same time. Another fellow played ‘rengttang’. Chermelam (?) was playing at 5am at the chapel, along with ‘fozne’ which served a sort of a wake up call to the nearby villagers who regularly attended the novena mass. People left their homes around 5.30am so as to arrive up there in time for mass at 6. Chermelam playing could be heard all over Velsao and Cansaulim. All cute little kings can be seen more closely at 20.25 King's crown. It was the most expensive item of the occasion which was also kept as a souvenir. I remember, such crown costing Rs.300 in late 70's All other kings dresses, colourful umbrellas, bonderam etc I guess it is a church property. Hiring of Horses from neigbouring districts such as from Belgaum was the next expesive thing. Traditonally, buffaloes were used instead of horses, we were told. [Goanet] EC should cancel registration of BJP for not allowing Parliament to function
EC SHOULD CANCEL REGISTRATION OF BJP FOR NOT ALLOWING PARLIANENT TO FUNCTION Mr Shantaram Naik M P, Secretary All India Congress Committe and a Member of Standing Committee of Parliament on Personnel,Public Grievances, Law and Justice, which submitted it's report on Lokpal Bill, recently said that in view of the behavior of the Bhartiya Janta Party in both Houses of Parliament during the last two sessions in which the party stalled the proceedings of Parliament by resorting to blackmailing tactics, the registration of the party in the office of the Election commission of India should be cancelled forthwith. Mr Naik said each and every member of Parliament of BJP ,just as others too, have taken oath ,firstly before the respective Returning Officers and later on before the Presiding Officers of the respective Houses, that they will bear true faith and allegiance to the constitution of India. Besides, Mr Naik says that every political party is required to register itself in the office of the Election Commission of India under section 29-A of the Representation of Peoples' Act 1951 , and that, every political party has to submit along with their application for registration a copy of memorandum, Rules and Regulation which should contain a specific provision that the association bears true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and to the principles of socialism, secularism and democracy Mr Naik said that since BJP , has violated their own Rules and Regulations, besides the provisions of Constitution of India, BJP needs to be de-recognized by way cancellation of it's registration. Mr Naik said a protest for a day or two could be understood but stalling the proceedings for days together and not allowing important legislations to be passed indicates that BJP has no respect or regard for the democratic values. Mr Naik said that BJP is dangerously moving towards fascist philosophy while retaining their allegiance to the Constitution of India for namesake. Bhartiya Janta Party's meeting with President of India on thrusday, is like Chor Mchaye Shor ( thieves raising alarm) and like it is said Sou Chuhe Khake Billi Gayee Haj ( after eating 100 rats, cat goes to Haj pilgrimage).
