[Goanet] SMILE........................... IT'S WEEKEND (09/02/2012)
ABOUT MY A heavy chain smoker (Sakru) was caught and put behind the bars for the seventh time for smoking in the public places, where the smoking is forbidden. He was questioned by the Judge in the court:- Judge: Sakru, you go on committing the same crime for so many times, this is the seventh time you are caught for smoking continuously in public places, do you admit? Sakru: Yes my lord, I do. Judge: Don't you realize that smoking is dangerous to your health and high risk for lungs? Sakru: I do your honour. Judge: Since you are repeating the same crime again and again, this time your punishment will be stringent. Do you want to say anything? Sakru: Yes your honour! Sometimes when I reflect back on all the cigarettes I smoked, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the cigarette and think about the workers in the cigarette factory and all of their hopes and dreams. If I don't smoke this cigarette, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered, Then I say to myself, it's better that I smoke this cigarette and let their dreams come true then be selfish and worry about my LUNGS. [Goanet] Income Tax Dept Credibility - India
There are several Government Agencies whose primary national duty is to take care of the Country's interests but then why are the extremely corrupt Politicians not targetted? For Instance, it is well known that Goa is India's most corrupt state and many Ministers/MLA's, are involved in serious activities accumulating large amounts of illegal wealth. Some of them have also been well reported in the media and are quite serious in monetary terms, but surprisingly the Income Tax department ignores them and goes after common man/priests who even if guilty, cannot be compared to the huge theft/corruption/scams done by Senior Politicians. With the Congress in power at the centre, all Central Agencies including CBI appear to be compromised and its local party MLA' s in Goa are kept well protected; no wonder Goa's Ministers/MLA's today do what they want in arrogance and total disregard to Goans. I am sorry to say that I have lost faith in the so called Great Indian Democratic System and it is high time, we the people take charge of things and clean out the Politics in Goa/India; if at all we really want to progress further!! -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. Aaah! Do you mean to say that the loot of Goa didn't start after 1961, as some on this list try to keep suggesting? FN On 9 February 2012 08:28, Gabriel de Figueiredo gdefigueir...@yahoo.com.auwrote: I understand there was an attempt to remove the jewels off the casket of St Francis Xavier in the 40s/50s - having read of the episode in Memorias do meu passaado (Fernando Noronha). So there were issues in those times, but it appears that people were also more vigilant and aware of one another, i.e. ensured each-others' well-being, as opposed to today's apparent apathy ('Maka kiteak podlam, mojem kain num tem'). [Goanet] Days' summary (02/09/2012)
To Goanet - 1) I don't buy any of the Goan newspapers since I am convinced they are all compromised and corrupt, purveyors of paid items masquerading as news. Imagine my surprise then when I descried Herald at a Panjim café this morning with its front page featuring a beaming Raul Fermandes (its Director). The blurb said that he has been declsred the Media Personality of the Year by the Business Goa magazine. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I mean, here is a publication that has been subjected to a sting operation by a real journalist Mayabhushan Nagvenkar, that allegedly revealed that it was routinely planting fake stories masquerading as news in exchange for cash. So while the publication is under a cloud of corruption, we have its owner crowned Media Personality blah blah. You can't make this up! A quick Google search revealed that Business Goa magazine is run by Harshvardhan Bhatkuly and Rajiv D'Silva, apparently young(ish) fellows. All I can say is, the next generation of Goans is turning out to be as rotten as the one currently screwing Goa. The torch has passed. 2) Don't the fellows (including Dr Wilfred D'Souza) who are pimping for Mamta's Trinamool Congress have an atom of self-respect? I mean, have you seen the toilet that is Kolkota, or the misery that is Bengal? And this Bengali party is going to do good by Goa? At least aim for a national party, if you must. But a miserable Bengali ragtag outfit? I hear that all the ticket rejects from the Kangress and BJP are lining up at the Trinamool trough hoping for left-overs. r --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

The Goa Book Club will meet on Friday (Feb 10, 2012, at 5 pm, usual venue -- Broadway Book Centre, Panjim). Author of the recently-published novel *Just Matata*, Braz Menezes, will be there to answer questions and discuss his work. Matata is Swahili for trouble, as Chico discovers in 1928, after jumping ship on a journey from India to Africa. Says the book: With some skills and much sweat, he (Chico) navigates the channels open to him under the segregated colonial structure of Kenya, while doing all to keep his heritage alive, and dreaming only of retirement to his beloved Goa. Enter son Lando, two decades later, and all plans are on hold. Re: [Goanet] Go for it Valanka!
I know Cecil wrote it in his satirical way, but I still feel the need to ask if he made an honest error in noting that Valanka was running for the MP seat. It is said that Winston Churchill mobilized the English language and sent it to battle. Our own Churchill murders the language and sends it to the squealing pigs, that is we Goans as he seems that's what we are. [Goanet] Winability, the name of the game
Winability, the name of the game Eugene Correia Those who see Goa differently than those who are in the political class, particularly those who are deeply engaged in the loot-and-plunder business as elected representatives, often find it disappointing that their crying hoarse at the pratice of family politics or dynastic politics fall on deaf ears of the bigwigs of the parties. The Congress point man, Oscar Fernandes, may have taken an easy way out in explaining that tickets have been given to family members of ministers and MLAs because of ''people's choices. Under the rubric winability, everything the Congress does for winning the elections is fair game. As we have just seen how the very vocal Mauvin Godinho has been shunted out as chairperson of the campaign committee for his remark that tickets to family members should not have been given. In a way, Godinho crossed the line in speaking out at a time when the Congress is battered from within and outside for its cardinal sin of doing an about-turn on its one ticket per family rule. It adhered to this rule in the last election and saw the disastrous results of some of its members leaving the party and contesting as independents or some forming a different political group. The prime example of the latter case is that of Save Goa Front, which sprouted from the ground laid by Churchill Alemao. Congress should have aware of Churchill's antics as well as his boldness in carrying out his threats because of his past record. But the party failed to gauge Churchill's seriousness to walk out. This time the Congress was perhaps reluctant to push the Varca bulldozer into a corner, lest he bounces back with all his power. He succeeded this time and this victory has put him on top. His dear Valanka got a big gift from her loving father. What more she could ask? No doubt her father will help her through all means, yeah, muscle power, money power and terror power, but it would remain with Valanka to hold her ground, dribbled past the defenders and score the winning goal. At this moment it seems she has a tough defence to beat. The main obstacle is obviously Dr. Hubert Gomes and he is not giving his dentist smile, the one seen when a dentist drills into your mouth. It would take him more than his expert skills to remove the glowing smile off Valanka's face. The fight in Benaulim is unlikely to be like the heavyweight championship between Churchill and Mickky Pacheco. But let's hope it will be a fair game. The dad lost Benaulim but will the daughter win it? One thing noticeable from Valanka is that she does not shoot her mouth like her cousin Yuri. Maybe it is because of their education and training into two different fields, one a constrained and article one and the other worldly and flamboyant. She a lawyer and he a trained pilot. Yuri is flying too high and too soon. His wayward remark of stopping water to the whole of Salcette to highlight the woes of his chosen constituency Sanguem shows his political naivete. He should have been taught the rudimentary lessons of politics by being made to sit at his father or uncle's feet. Oops, just remembered that these two seasoned poiticians do not have in them any lessons to teach even with their learning experience of serving as MLAs. They themselves speak with both sides of their mouths. As a first lesson for Churchill, he should be made to read Winston Churchill's biography and then the wartime leader's legendary speeches. The ones that come to mind are those he made in the House of Commons in 1940, Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat, and We Shall Fight on the Beaches, and at Harrow School in 1941, where he said, Never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.' As he is named after the irrepressible British statesman, our own unstatesmanlike leader (to use a mild word) must be made aware what the Englishman said, Democracy is more vindictive than Cabinets. The wars of peoples are more terrible than those of kings. Some perhaps hope this Churchillian logic comes to bear in this election and that the warrior in the Napolean Bonaparte mould meets his Waterloo at this election. While some may hope that the rest of the family too goes into political oblivion. Let's see if the voters in the respective constituencies where the Alemos are contesting make it happen. If it indeed happens in four constituencies that that Alemos have staked, and in the neighbouring constituences of Taleigoa and Santa Cruz, where the Monserrates have put up their tents, it would be an apt answer to Oscar's people's choice defence. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php

[Goanet] If a parish priest can be raided, why not a minister who has received 25 crore kickbacks?
If a parish priest can be raided, why not a minister who has received 25 crore kickbacks? SUJAY GUPTA Did we really live to see this day? A disciple of the Lord, the Parish Priest of St Francis Xavier Church, Velim gets raided by the election flying squad and a team from the Income Tax and humiliated. In our very same Goa, the very same I-T Department does not have the guts to even question, leave alone raid a minister against whom the Department has poof of receiving over Rs 25 crores of kickbacks to convert land to settlement as part of the regional plan. The anguish, hurt and anger of not just the parishioners of Velim, or just Catholics, every right thinking and sensitive Goan is speechless with shock at the sheer insensitivity and brazenness of the raid at the Church premises. While the Department may well say that it was doing a job, was there any serious prima facie evidence or information to suggest that the priest was the custodian of ill gotten wealth? In place of wads of cash which the I-T officers expected, they found a box of chocolates. Then he was asked how much money he had in his personal account and that of the church and even if he had a PAN number. This to say the least, are meaningless questions with a motive to harass. The priest will obviously have some money and savings in his account and money for the church in the Church account. Those who have ill gotten wealth, like some of our ministers, do not put them in bank accounts. Black money is sent abroad through a hawala network operating in India and the Gulf. Recently, there were a spate of reports about huge kickbacks for land conversions reaching the then TCP minister Babush Monserrate. The reports were based on an Income Tax assessment order signed by V S Chakrapani, Dy Commissioner I-T-Central Circle. When this minister has not been questioned or raided even after available evidence as per I-T investigations, on what grounds was a priest, who has been loved and regarded by all his parishioners raided? There is a far more worrying backdrop to this. Father Romano, had of late, had been preaching to parishioners not to vote for money but according to their conscience. The Council for Social Justice and Peace too has advocated the same. Interestingly, the Parish Priest of the St Andrew’s Church Vasco Father Jose Antonio Costa was raided by the local Mamlatdar and the police barely two hours before a football match organised by him between the Archbishop’s XI and the Hallelujah Club of South Korea. The raiding party sought details of ticket sales and profits from the match. Interestingly, Father Costa too was preaching against corruption and the need to have clean candidates. It doesn’t require a political chanakya to guess what the Priests’ message was and who he was referring to. Both Father Costa and Father Romano Gonsalves have similar back stories. They preached against corruption and got raided. It seems that wrong arm of the law doesn’t even spare simple, well meaning priests who give out the right messages. A society that protects corrupt ministers and humiliates holy men is diseased. This needs to be cleansed and voting for the right people is the best way to do it. [Goanet] War by other means
In this election season where opposing parties make all sorts of promises and claims, here is an article from the Frontline magazine which covers the track record of the BJP in the states where it rules. It is worth reading before making a decision on whom to vote for. Extracts: A closer look at this phenomenon has revealed that the trend of promoting Hindutva-oriented legislative and administrative action as well as the discrimination of minorities is all the more pronounced in States where the BJP had been in power for relatively long periods. A look at the functioning of the BJP-ruled governments underscores the point that numerous aspects of governance, including the drafting of legislation, policy orientation, issuance of executive orders, maintenance of law and order and routine day-to-day administrative functioning, are exploited for this purpose (see separate stories). Almost all BJP-ruled States have, at some point or the other, witnessed attempts to promote the Hindutva world view through revision of textbooks. This is in tune with the view of the Sangh Parivar leadership that education is a crucial tool in promoting its visions about society and the world. In Madhya Pradesh, even the nomenclature of teachers has been revised as part of this exercise. The Chauhan government's preferred title for teachers is rishi. A variety of Sangh Parivar constituents such as the Bajrang Dal, the VHP and the Seva Bharati supplement this Hindutva thrust using methods ranging from social service to propaganda to threats to downright oppression. While the Seva Bharati and Ekal Vidyalayas have a record of sustained work in the realm of education and promotion of literacy, outfits such as the Bajrang Dal seek to dominate local communities by imposing Hindutva-oriented social mores and religious practices. The efforts in education and social sectors are facilitated in numerous ways by a number of Hindutva organisations, including those based abroad. Here too, there is a range of outfits that the Sangh Parivar can choose from at different times for different tasks. The VHP of America openly embraces Hindutva while organisations such as the India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF) are camouflaged under the constitutional format of a charity group. The IDRF has provided huge financial support (running into millions of dollars) to organisations in the education sector. The social impact of these manoeuvres is undoubtedly far-reaching. Reports from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP has been in power since 1998 and 2003 respectively, point to increasing ghettoisation of minority communities, particularly the Muslim community. These reports also underscore the systematic attempts to subvert the secular character of the education system (see separate story). The Independent People's Tribunal on Communalism, which consisted of eminent citizens like the historian K.N. Panikkar, Justice S.N. Bhargava, the sociologist Dr Asghar Ali Engineer, and Planning Commission member Syeeda Hameed, studied issues relating to this in detail five years ago by getting depositions from people in 16 States, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. The tribunal pointed out methodical attempts to marginalise the minorities, particularly Muslims and Christians. Specifically, it also noted that there were attempts at systematic clearing or dispossession of lands belonging to members of minority communities. The subtle and not-so-subtle communalisation of the bureaucracy, especially lower-level officials, the police and the district administration, facilitated these discriminatory processes. The tribunal noted that the criminal justice system in several States appears to be under the influence of Hindutva force and consequently there are instances of false cases being foisted against innocent Muslims. The BJP-ruled States present any number of instances of the practice of the trends identified by the tribunal. The circular issued by the Chauhan government last year to all police stations directing them to collect information about Christians, including data on the number of priests, bishops, schools and institutions, is a case in point. The circular directed the police stations to find out what sort of political patronage the community received and what their economic sources were and to identify Christians with criminal antecedents. Sections of the RSS and the VHP still consider that the Hindutva quotient of many BJP State governments is not up to the mark, while those running the governments aver that they are doing their best. Whatever the final evaluation on this debate, there is little doubt that the impact of the Hindutva-oriented good governance on the minority communities is a painful one. http://www.frontlineonnet.com/stories/20120224290300400.htm --- Protect Goa's

[Goanet] NEWS: BJP woes in Goa... Cong dissidence... rich representatives of the people... BJP disowns Dinar Tarcar
BJP woes in Goa worsen after Gadkari visit Indo-Asian News Service Panaji, February 07, 2012 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari's recent two-day visit to Goa appears to have done more damage than good to the party's image here, ahead of the March 3 assembly election. When Gadkari flew down to Goa Feb 4, one of his major agendas was to cap the aggravating feud between two party heavyweights - North Goa MP Shripad Naik and state assembly's leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar - which was threatening to pull the rank and file apart. But not only was Gadkari snubbed by the sulking Naik, a few hours after his departure to New Delhi, but the party president's lukewarm comments on the rampaging illegal mining industry in Goa also left the MP baffled. The party chief's seeming inability to break the ice between Naik and Parrikar was evident Sunday when during a press meet Gadkari refused to allow the MP to speak to the media about his differences with the party. Whatever issue there was has been settled… He is contesting the elections, Gadkari said, virtually blaming media for blowing out of proportion the differences between the two leaders. Two hours later, a sombre Naik, who had for months been insisting on contesting state assembly elections, announced that he would not contest the March 3 election. I do not have the time to carry out my campaign. I will not contest the seat, Naik said, disregarding Gadkari's assurance and stumping both party officials and the media. Projected by the BJP as a backward class leader in Goa, Naik had over the last several months gone on record as to making a re-entry into state politics after serving three terms as north Goa MP and being appointed minister of state in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. Naik's supporters claimed that Parrikar, who has been the face of the party in Goa, was stalling Naik's re-entry into state politics, because it would create two power centres. Parrikar denied the allegations. On the mining front, Gadkari's comments calling for a rejig of eccentric environment laws in response to a query on how the party planned to handle illegal mining has also baffled the state party unit. Here we are claiming that there has been a Rs.25,000 crore illegal mining scam by the Congress government and Gadkariji talks about changing environment laws. We have received no clear direction on how to hit out at the Congress over the huge mining scam now, a party leader said, hinting that BJP's proposed poll campaign against illegal mining might just not take-off. Instead of taking on the illegal mining industry head on, Gadkari had underlined the need for changing environment laws and establishing a balance between industry, environment and employment to further India's growth story. http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Goa/BJP-woes-in-Goa-worsen-after-Gadkari-visit/Article1-808107.aspx * * * Goa polls: Congress in tailspin over dissidence PTI | Feb 9, 2012, 11.18AM IST PANAJI: In a bind over largescale dissidence in the party ahead of March 3 Goa Assembly polls, Congress poll managers are pulling all stops to placate the dissenters who have raised the banner of revolt after being denied tickets. The anxiety in Congress is palpable from the fact that the ruling party has withheld announcing its third and final list of four candidates out of 33 seats it is contesting in alliance with NCP which is fielding candidates on 7 seats. We will try to meet every aspirant. Talk to them and try to take them on board, senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, who heads the screening committee to shortlist the candidates, told PTI last evening after holding a series of meetings throughout the day. In a bid to check dissidence, Fernandes is holding parleys with the hopefuls and a few upset party leaders in the coastal state. It is common thing that everybody who does not get a ticket feels hurt. The party will talk to everyone individually and put in all the efforts to ensure that they (dissidents) don't leave the organisation, he said. Congress has so far released two lists. However, owing to rebellion it is going slow in announcing the third one where dispute is on regarding two seats. In Mormugao, minority community candidate Saifulla Khan is vying for party ticket and so is Sankalp Amonkar. In Fatorda constituency, another hopeful M K Shaikh has thrown his hat in ring while Vijay Sardesai is staking claim for the seat. In a pointer to the heart burn in the party rank and file over distribution of tickets, two leaders, Dinar Tarcar and Pravin Zantye, have put down their papers. Tarcar would be contesting on Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party's (MGP's) ticket in St Cruz constituency while Zantye will file his nomination as an Independent from Mayem constituency. MGP has recently entered into a pre-poll alliance with main opposition BJP. Meanwhile, Victoria Fernandes, who is a lone woman legislator in Congress, is fuming over

Is there a possibility that an outsider has been fuelling suspicion between the rank and file of the Catholic Church in Velim. Laws misused? The recent raid by the IT department together with the Flying Squad at the Parish of Velim and Vasco clearly confirms how our own laws are been misused by the people in power. The only mistake committed by the priests of both the parishes is they preached the truth of not voting the politicians who tries to buy our precious votes. The raid shocked the entire descent goan community. Sorry to say that the election commission cannot see the open election related massive illegal activities carried out by the powerful contestants but they are very well known to harass the descent contestants. Hope we will learn from such incidents and vote descent candidates irrespective of party lines so that things in Goa will change for good in future. Will we do it? Only time will tell us.
