 Response:
First of all, I find Sandesh Anvekar's remark absolutely loathsome. No
doubt, some Goans are waiting with bated breath for the return of the
BJP-ram raj so that we can look forward to 5 years of hurt sensibilities.

Ignorance about the Church aside, I always find some comments faintly
amusing. In the Christian dominated West, these very people have no problem
at all sending their children to school where they all learn about Christ
(yes, even non-religious state schools), preform in Christmas pageants and
cheerfully dress up as Easter bunnies. It is only in India amidst a
population of 1.2 billion, where 2.3% are Christians, that they feel so
threatened by the Church and so-called conversions.

It is attitudes such as these that will effectively assure India's place
perpetually in the Dark Ages. Strangely, no amount of middle-class
prosperity in India seems to be eradicating these attitudes which puts paid
to the theory that affluence and education are the best criteria for
 progress.

 Best,
 selma

Goa Assembly. There is NO contest about that.

Right now he (not the party) is the most appealing candidate, in my
view.  Especially since there is no (credible) regional party alternative.

I hope that if Manohar's slate does pull off a victory (and I am not at all
sure that they will), the mistakes he made in the past will not be repeated.
He faces an uphill task.  For any effective governance he will have to
get a clear majority, without any looming threat of blackmail from
one or two fellows, as happens in any coalition these days.  That
is a tall order.

Note that right now all one can hope for Goa is to slow down its
'slumification.'  The Goa we knew and loved is gone.  Thank you,
India, for nothing.

[Goanet] Keith Vaz's involvement in Goan party politics

2012-02-14 Thread delima francis
If the reports on Goanet are correct and Keith Vaz has taken or is taking
an active part in party politics in Goa then I believe such involvement to
be entirely improper.

Mr Vaz is a British national, a Member of the British Parliament and,
indeed, the Chairman of the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee.
Accordingly, the latter Parliament and Committee - and very particularly
his constituents in Leicester - ought to be his primary focus and
should consume his total public energies, efforts and commitments. So, if
the reports are correct, what on earth is he doing actively campaigning on
behalf of a particular political party or candidate in Goa?

As a Goan, Mr Vaz is understandably interested in his heritage and the old
country and may well have views on Goan affairs but given his commitments
back home (the UK) for which he is very handsomely paid and from which he
derives extensive parliamentary privilleges, I believe that he ought to
desist from active participation in Goan domestic politics.

Of course, he has the option open to him to up roots and take up permanent
residence in Goa!

[Goanet] PRESS CONFERENCE OF SHANTARAM NAIK

2012-02-14 Thread SHANTARAM NAIK

14th Feb 2012

KEY POINTS MADE BY SHRI SHANTARAM NAIK M P AND CHIEF SPOKESPERSON OF GOA
PRADESH CONGRSSS COMMITTEE

Mr Shantaram Naik M P and Secretary AICC said , addressing a press
conference today in Congress House, Panaji ,today, that BJP ,day by
day, is loosing its identity as a political party in the country and is
becoming a nuisance in Indian politics ,and that, Parliamentary
democracy would be in danger if BJP is allowed to play its fascist
games, which the party plays during Parliamentary sessions.

Mr Naik said that BJP adopted a policy of not allowing
Parliament to function which goes to indicate that BJP is marching
towards fascism , in accordance with their fascist bosses, and
therefore, people of Goa, who have achieved the independence after 450
years of Portuguese rule , should keep BJP at a distance in the
interest of democracy and freedom.

BJP's role in stalling Parliament ,for the last one year , has
roughly caused loss of 1000 crores to the exchequer said Mr Naik and
added that such political parties should not have any place in democracy
, he said.

Mr Naik said that on the Lokpal Bill , BJP gave all the
indications to the Government that they would co-operate in getting the
bill passed and, at the end, played their most unethical game.

CITIZENS' CHARTER
Mr Naik said Central Government is proposing to enact a law
to provide for statutory and mandatory Citizens Charter to bring in more
transparency in Government administration.

For this purpose, a bill, entitled, The Right of Citizens
for Time Bound Delivery Of Goods and Services and Reddressal Of their
Grievances Bill ,2011 has been introduced in the Lok Sabha.

Mr Naik said that within six months from the date of the
commencement of the Act , every public authority has to publicise a
Citizens Charter.

This Citizens Charter will ensure speedy and time bound
delivery of goods and services to the members of public and, each and
every aspect of Citizen Charter will be clearly publicised for the
benefit of the people and that, all the details of the Charter would be
compulsorily will be made available on the website, under the proposed
legislation.

WHISTLE BLOWER ACT

Similarly, Mr Naik said that Whistle blower Act is going
to be another step in the direction of bringing in transparency and
efficacy in the Government administration. Both these bills will be
vigorously implemented in Goa when they become the law.

But Mr Naik said that he was sure that BJP will not allow any of
these legislations passed on some pretext or the other , which is why,
Mr Naik said, that he feels that BJP is posing a danger to the
Parliamentary democracy.

BJP AND THE GARBAGE

Mr Parrikar is promising the electorate that he will solve the
garbage issue within three months but quetion that remains is, when Mr
Parrikar was Chief Minister for five years , why could he not solve
the problem ?

Besides, He always boasts that he can get the work done through
officers , and that , he does not require ministers for doing any of
his works If that be so, why is that Panaji is full of garbage ?

Mr Naik said some BJP MLAs have nursed their constituencies
better than Mr Parrikar.

Mr Naik said that BJP itself is a garbage which is stinking ,
due to its sectarian policies , and that, it should be burnt totally
and disposed of.

BJP' PUT FISHERMEN IN TROUBLE

Mr Naik said LOP Shri Manohar Parrikar ,it is learnt, is blaming
Congress on CRZ but, it is due to a petition by Shri Francisco Dsouza
,BJP MLA in the High Court that the fishermen of Goa came into deep
trouble.

It is the at the instance of Congress Party , that UPA Government
has given relief to the bonafide fishermen residing in coastal areas by
protecting their houses, Mr Naik said.

Mr Parrikar is promising the electorate that he will solve the
garbage issue within three months but quetion that remains is, when Mr
Parrikar was Chief Minister for five years , why could he not solve
the problem ?

Besides, He always boasts that he can get the work done through
officers , and that , he does not require ministers for doing any of
his works If that be so, why is that Panaji is full of garbage ?

better than Mr Parrikar.

Mr Naik said that BJP itself is a garbage which is stinking ,
due to its sectarian policies , and that, it should be burnt totally
and disposed of.

FALSE PROMISES OF JOBS BY PARRIKAR

It is learnt that Panaji candidate Shri Manohar Parrikar is
giving assurances for youth ,specially, Panaji youth , of giving of
them jobs without knowing fully well that there is no chance of BJP
coming to power. He is only harping that if Congress comes to power,
thereby , admitting that it will,

[Goanet] Its Election time in Goa

2012-02-14 Thread Vivian A. DSouza
At Christmas in the years 2010 and 2011,  a gentleman claiming to be just a
do-gooder,
came by our residence witha bag full of goodies, which included Basmati rice,
coconuts,
jaggery, sugar etc. etc.  I declined the gift each time, because I had a
suspician that it had to do with Buying votes even though in December 2010
elections were not on the horizon.
When I asked the generous gentleman, why the gift ?  He responded that his
Trust was spreading good cheer, giving the goodies to those of the Hindu
faith at Ganesh Chathurti and Christians at Christmas. Since I believe that
there is no such thing as a free lunch, I
politely declined to accept his gift.  My neighbors greedily accepted their
gifts.

14 months later we find that the do gooder bearing gifts is standing for
election, and today
with a large entourage he was gong door to door to ask people to vote for him.
He did not
come to my house.  I told my neighbors in December 2010 to be careful, as this
person
was just softening them up to vote for him even though he was not known as a
politician at that time.  Everything I told my neighbors has come true.  Here
is a blatant attempt to buy
votes, though it happened long before the model code of conduct came into
effect.
Such is the state of affairs in Goa.  In the press we hear about Police Flying
squad
searching cars for large sums of money or cases of liquor presumably to be used
to buy
votes. In Porvorim constituency alone there are 7 or 8 parties in the fray.
Wow !  So many
public spirited individuals seeking election so that they can serve the
polulace at large !
If one believes that, one needs to have their heads examined.

This is election - Goa style !

[Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India's temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-14 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Santosh Helekar:

Despite its name, the CSF is not a secular forum. It is a Catholic
propaganda outfit as much as the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti is a Hindu
propaganda outfit. So it is understandable that it would want to point
out the flaws in the Hindu religion, and offer the Christian gospel as
the answer. Sandesh appears to be a devout Hindu who is understandably
offended by the anti-Hindu propaganda of CSF. He is lashing out
against the CSF in response, and may also be overly paranoid about his
fellow Hindus being converted to Christianity.

Response:

1.As usual Santosh tends to exaggerate, mislead and obfuscate issues.
In no way can the CSF be compared or equated with the HJS. I have yet
to see one provocative article inciting hate or violence against any
religion. Neither have I come across any hate literature or propaganda
espoused by it like the HJS. If Santosh has come across any, I would
request him to provide the links. The worst that can be said about the
CSF is that sometimes it goes overboard and tends to over-react to
minor and inconsequential issues like that of calling for a ban on
the Da Vince Code movie or more recently A R Rahman's song which
contains the word 'Hosanna. It has been playing an exemplary role in
highlighting acts of hate and violence against the Christian community
which generally go unnoticed in the secular media. Unlike the CSF, the
HJS/ SS has been involved in terrorist activities and is currently
being considered for being banned by the security forces and
government.

2. I went through the article in question. Nowhere does it point out
any flaw in the Hindu religion. In fact, it offers hope to those whom
society has cast away. For those conversant or familiar with the
Bible, there is the living example of Mary Magdalene and the
prostitute who was saved by Christ from being stoned. Propagating
one's religion is no crime. There is no anti-Hindu propaganda as
Santosh states. I quote from the article-

A devadasis who discovers a relationship with Christ becomes a
powerful witness in her community, according to one Christian worker.
These new lives in Christ become witnesses against the practice that
enslaved them and for the Savior who set them free. The worker
describes it like the woman at the well who, once she realizes she's
talking to Jesus, goes out telling all other women about Him.

Many Christian workers are sharing the Gospel message with these
victimized women, equipping them, empowering them, mentoring them,
training them and discipling them. They are bringing light to souls
that have known only darkness their entire lives.

http://persecutedchurch.info/2012/02/11/the-gospel-provides-powerful-hope-for-indias-temple-prostitutes/

3. Further, Sandesh's response was against the Church and conversion
and not against the CSF as Santosh would like to mislead us. I quote
Sandesh 'in the end the motive of the Church is always to convert (as
always)...'. Unfortunately, the false propaganda unleashed by the
hindutva forces has taken root in the minds of ordinary people like
Sandesh. The word conversion has been somehow given a negative
meaning. Proselytising is done by all religions and even atheists. Has
anyone seen the Hare Rama, Hare Krishna worshippers. I have seen them
in Bombay, Poona, Delhi and even in Russia where they dance and pray
in public and distribute their literature. change.

As far as I can see the CSF post was pretty innocuous. I am left
wondering why it elecited such a response from Sandesh.

Regards,

Marshall

COMMENT:

It is possible that Carmen knows of the result of Matanhy's
immediately previous attempt at running as an 'ethical independent'.

From what I know, the ethical part got a beating.

In the previous House, Matanhy was 'famado' as being a closet BJP -
propping up the coalition without joining it officially. It would have
been better if he had joined the BJP-led coalition, got himself into
the cabinet and done something for the folks who voted him in.
Instead, he tried to play safe. He even stayed very silent when some
very strange things happened i.e. Alleged forgery wrt the then
speaker, the manhandling of a member and the infamous VideoCD
incident. [ One will notice how slight-of-handedly, Geraldo Oliveira
is trying to brush off the VideoCD stuff. He must believe that all
Goans are stupid. ]

To his credit, however, Matanhy in 2012 has decided to be open about
his political leanings and calculated political benefits. He could
have easily done the Wilfred Mesquita, but he did not.

I wish him well and I hope he is able to get into a position to do
something for the people of Curtorim.

The 'rock and a hard place' scenario is this: If the BJP does not
secure an absolute majority, the horse-trading of the past will return
and more Monster-Rats (about whom the BJP are now complaining) will be
created. The other jumping-jacks (about whom the BJP are also
complaining) are also likely to be welcomed back in the interest of
providing Goa with stability and good governance.

If the BJP secures an absolute majority, the nagging doubt - based on
what goes on in other BJP led States - will remain. This is in special
reference to the Moral Policing.

In both the above scenarios, the stuff will continue. Same stuff,
different/additional rats - perhaps at different speeds.

Anybody has a log of How much Goa taxpayer funds were spent on
Chintaks, Baitaks and other Dilliwalla and Dilliwalli Vijits to Goa
(Governor's residence and 7-star Hotels) since 2000?

Now Carmen, I hope you will understand my growing cynicism and near
total disbelief that anything significantly beneficial will happen to
Goa at the hands of the politicians.

Re: [Goanet] Mathany and BJP

2012-02-14 Thread Pandu Lampiao
Ah, elementary dea Carmen. Once you drink PWD tap water (muck and
all), Goichi politics, crime and grime become clear.

From the B*P stand point, all the Katlick candidates they had in the
past did not have a profile, were limp or impotent if you will.
Come to think of it, bad orators don't get votes.
So they chanced on Mathanywhat better profile to get the Katlick
votes. In my view, this could back fire but the little bird tells me
the church (which has always supported him in the past) has now
quietly come to his aid. They are asking their congregation to vote
for the 'right' candidate *wink wink*.
On the other hand, if you look at the demographic of his electoral
seat, he has the migrants and should give a f^k for the st**pid
katlick vote (some illiterate will reply with how dare you).
Katlick votes can be bought with a few crisp notes and now, how lo is
that ya?
If Mathany went independent, some hairy katlick lot might have voted
for him (if they had good bowel movements on election day). He is
equally a street-smart man.

The second coup for the B*P is the seamen.
Nice job for that particular leader to assure them (a few days ago) he
would fight for the pensions etc. None of the useless dumb katlick
p*liticians (its the wrong word, they are really good-for-nothing
layabouts out for a quick buck, self-gratification and who knows what
the f*k runs through their minds)...ever bothered with the seamen. Now
the B*P could have Chinchanim, Chandor, Curtorim, Dramapur, Navelim,
Cuncolim, Velim.

Say, shrewd thinking to get the katlick heartland. This could back
fire but without venturing this route, there is nothing gained.

What none of the commentators in the wrapping newspapers nor the
GoaNet have mentioned is the 'green' lot (the ones who descended from
Hubli and multiplied in Goi). Our very own GoaNet Parrikar's post a
few weeks ago alludes to their world view (I cannot find the post).
You should sleep well, last weekend in the dust of the election
tamsha, they quietly renovated the Madr*sa on the Cansaulim-Zuari
road. *wink wink*. They were demanding three reserved seats
(shockingly Navelim) for the community. Huh?

Ah, my local fisherwoman looks like she fell off a fashion catwalk
prancing around with clean fresh B*P cap!!

Could someone tell us how Keith Vaz was wrong in speaking from an election

If he is legally wrong then the place to go is to the appropriate legal forum

wrong, then who decides this? BJP buddies, anti-Churchill

Lo! another Kangress jester perhaps... who only likes to dwell on non
essentials

They cant tolerate a word of criticism...I 'd rather expected that someone
would give some sane advise to mr floriano
over his unbridled criticism of hindu gods which was totally unasked for
here...(that only reflects poorly on him I could have answered him in
his own language, but that's not something befitting a proud Hindu).
instead they are busy trying to associate me with fundamentalist groups and
commenting on my english langauge.

As for me.. I have never said that Christian people make me feel
insecure... nor is the question of disbelief in Christian religion

But CHURCH!!! Yes... I have my own views and doubts over what it is and
what it can dothat does indeed make me feel creepy

In any case..if not anything else.. I am at least satisfied to know that
there are some over educated clowns here...

cheers.

[3] I know that they DEFINITELY teach correct English at the
kindergarten level - of good English Medium Schools. I do not know
about Chapati or Ingraji medium patshallas. It is possible that they
teach WORST or VERY WORST or (perhaps) VERY WORSTEST Ingraji in those
 patshallas.

ps: This from a Konkani Mogi who worked for a Marathi paper and
supported an anti-Konkani pro Maharashtra party. A few years before he
passed away I asked him why he supported a party which was destroying
the identity of Goa and Goans. His reply was that he feared Catholic
Goans would dominate the Hindu Goans after the Portuguese left.

[Goanet] Christians of India - we are not about conversions

2012-02-14 Thread Carvalho
I reproduce an extract by that notable writer George Menezes, about Christians
in India. Let us celebrate what each community has brought to the table in
India rather than wallow in Freud's narcissism of minor differences.
-

Look first at the patriotism of our people. Christians in the Armed Forces
have produced over forty winners of gallantry awards. Outstanding among these
are Lance Naik Albert Ekka who gave his life defending an Indian position in
some treacherous mountain far from home. Wing Commander Alan D’Costa who flew a
tiny Gnat and shot down a number of Pakistani Sabre jets; General Francis T.
Dias who captured the nodal town of Bogra in
East Pakistan.
Look at the impact we have had on culture and scholarship. Padma Vibushan Fr
Camille Bulcke wrote an outstanding English-Hindi
dictionary; Fr Carlos Valles was bestowed the highest award for Gujurati
literature, the Ranjitram Gold medal.
The work of Fr. Stephen Fuchs and Fr Costantine Lievens is no less phenomenal.
Any writing on Christians in India cannot ignore the community’s genuine
desire to be integrated into the country. For the record, Joseph Kala Baptista
rejected the government’s offer of job reservations. Similarly, Constituent
Assembly members, Fr. Jerone D’Souza and HC Mookherji rejected separate
electoral constituencies for Christians, while ensuring that minority rights
and interests were built into the Constitution.
The community’s achievement in the field of sports is no less astounding.
If our national anthem was heard being played again and again at the Olympic
games and at International sports events, it was often due to the achievements
of Christians. Both, in 1928 and 1948, the Olympic hockey team had nine
Christians in its ranks. In the first international women’s hockey team of
eleven
players, all were Christians.
During our freedom struggle and fifty years after, Christians have played
significant roles in the country’s political life and its governance. Largely
exemplary, clean and honest. Among stalwarts in public life, John Mathai and
Rajkumari Amrit Kaur were the first Christians in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.
Even today the names of Kerala chief minister AK Antony, Chief Election
Commissioner JM Lyngdoh and the Alva family represent integrity in public life.
But it is in the sphere of unconditional service to the poorest of the
poor that we have really given witness to the teachings of Jesus. Anchored as
we are, in a faith that upholds the primacy of human dignity and unconditional
love, the community has this uncompromising need to help people who are
ostracised, who experience injustice and to care for those who live in dire
conditions.
The Christian community has all these years responded to this situation in
a quiet, sustained and effective manner that is truly astounding and truly
miraculous. In a country of one billion people, the Christian community is
barely 22 million. According to the 1998 satistical data published in the
Catholic Directory of India, we run 3,785 KG and nursery schools, 7,319 primary
schools, 3,765 secondary schools and 240 colleges including prestious medical,
engineering and management schools. In addition, we run 1,514 technical
training schools. These institutions are the finest in the country, publicly
and privately acknowledged for exemplary teaching and for being sanctuaries of
human values, discipline and respect for the human person.
With 1,085 orphanages; 28 creches; 704 hospitals; 1,792 dispensaries and
health centre; 11 leprosaria; 102 rehabilitation centres and 455 homes for the
aged, destitute and handicapped, the community has been blessed by an
unparalleled Jesus-inspired opportunity to feel the pain of the people we
respond
to.
Some of the most competent and yet caring doctors in the country are
Christians. Mother Teresa in her own inimitable way lifted this service to the
plane of sainthood. Not bad, for a community that has neither economic strength
nor political clout.
