easy, since the work is already half done... by way of stories in English,
and illustrations) into any languages which have not been done (working on
some in Konkani too) please do get in touch. FN

Re: [Goanet] final list of candidates

2012-02-17 Thread Eugene Correia
Thanks to Navhind Times for carrying the full list, constituency-wise,
and I noticed that Su-raj has two, Julius Pereira in Aldona and
Annabella Maria Pereira in Taleigoa. Aldona is a nice pickle with the
big guns, Dr. Wilfred D'Souza and Dayanand Narverkar. If Julius wins
it would indeed be a historic one. Similarly, if Annabella humbles
Jennifer Monserrate on the latter's home ground, it would be a
resounding slap against the virtual rulers of Taleigoa. Give it to
Floriano for taking the challenge to fight the mighty. Knowing he had
less chance to win against Babush, he fielded himself in a previous
election.
It's time to do engage in forecasting the results. JoeGoaUK has
already done his maths. So, this time the number of candidates has
increased marginally, from 202 to 215.
Last time there were 88 male and 14 females, with the female number
decreasing to 9. Sadly missing Victoria Fernandes and Viola Pacheco. If
Victoria had thrown herself in the ring in Taleigoa, it would be a
re-match between Jennifer and Victoria. It is worth walking for miles
to see them mud-wrestle.
If the good doctor was keen on defeating the Congress candidate in
Benaulim, he should have not fielded John Fernandes on the Trinamool
Congress ticket. The BJP has obviously stayed out here perhaps because
this is a strong Christian constituency. The Christian vote will
suffer and if even Valanka or Hubert wins, it could be with small
margin.
These are just quickie shots. I await Floriano to make his
prediction. As for me, I think both his candidates will win and will
rule Goa with Floriano as CM ;-(

[Goanet] The 'do-gooders' for Goa

2012-02-17 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

Reading Freddy Agnelo Fernandes' observation that everyone seems to
know what's good for Goa except Goans themselves reminded me of
my own chance encounters within the last 3-4 days with a couple of guys
(Indians) who are visiting Goa.  They have these pies in the sky for Goa
and they are here in Goa to sell them to Goan suckers.  The problem is,
Goa was doing just fine without all these Indian 'ideas.' (note the quotes)
These aren't quality entrepreneurs I am talking about.  These guys are
what I would call 'operators.'

The opening gambit is flattery - and the whole world knows that it is extremely
easy to flatter a Goan - about how Goa and Goans are great, this that and
the other.  My question to them is almost always, why don't you go and
pitch this super idea to your own hometown or state?  Don't you want
to improve your own place?  Why this love for Goa, dude?  After this
little conversation the guy's enthusiasm evaporates.  No matter, he
will soon find a Goan toad to carry his water.

It would be appropriate if the articles submitted under Goanet Reader are

CSE's Fortnightly News Bulletin (February 16, 2012)

Some time back, CSE had carried out an analysis of the project clearances
granted by the ministry of environment and forests over the last five
years. Our findings had blasted a hole in industry's contention that green
clearances were holding up development projects in the country. On Feb
24-25, CSE's Anil Agarwal Dialogue on Green Clearances will bring together
regulators, civil society and industry to discuss and debate this
contentious issue.

Also on the burner are a number of new training programmes, courses and
other activities and events. And of course, we bring you this fortnight's
package of news, features and opinions from Down To Earth, as usual...

EDITORIAL: New business for new renewables
by Sunita Narain
==

It was a trade exhibition abuzz with the restrained chatter of busy suited
executives at company stalls making contacts and finalising deals. Nothing
out of place except that this trade was about renewable energy
technologies, which have unconventional reasons for growth. First, these
technologies are seen as the most economical and feasible source of energy
for millions of people unconnected to the electricity grid and having no
electricity to light their houses or cook their food. This energy poverty
is disabling and needs to be eradicated. Introduction of decentralised and
improved technologies paves the way to catapult the poorest of the
households into the most modern systems. Secondly, these technologies—from
wind and solar to biomass—provide cleaner low-carbon energy options to
combat climate change. These are future systems critical for survival of
all.

Strangely enough the gathering knew none of these objectives. For them it
was just a business, made lucrative by public investment. It was only
business as usual. But this is a fundamental disconnect. The fact is that
the business of renewable technologies is based on a different rationale
and different and explicit social objectives. The fact also is that this
business, because of these objectives, is being supported through public
financing and subsidy. Therefore, the business is not about the usual, but
the unusual.

This unusual business requires different models of growth, which can
promote entrepreneurship, innovation and profit, but for common and
environmental good. If this does not happen, the public subsidy and public
goodwill for this business will be lost. The future will be squandered. We
know that the fastest penetration of new energy sources is most likely to
happen in regions still growing in provisioning of basic necessities. The
already rich have built their energy infrastructure; they are energy
reckless. They need to move to clean energy, for their massive carbon
footprint is taking the world down. According to the International Energy
Agency, the growth of primary energy supply in OECD countries is expected
to be 0.3 per cent annually, while in India it will be the highest at 3 per
cent annually between 2009 and 2035. The infrastructure is being built now;
it is most appropriate not to “lock out” renewable and clean energy.

We also know that the countries ahead in building new energy infrastructure
also have the largest number of poor people, who do not have access to
energy. The same Paris-based energy agency’s global data book also tells us
that there is huge energy poverty in the world and that this energy source
is still priced higher than conventional energy systems. Here lies the nub
of the problem. The poorest need access to what are currently the most
expensive systems. This is possible only with massive public-financed
programmes that drive down the cost.

It is not as if renewable energy is per se a new venture. Currently, 10-12
per cent of the primary energy supply comes from renewable sources (not
counting hydroelectricity). But new renewables—technologies of the future
—still make up only 1 to 2 per cent of this supply. The rest comes from
biomass systems of the poor like the stove that burns wood or cow dung.
These are the clients who can now either take the next step on the energy
ladder to kerosene or LPG, or can jump to the top of the ladder by moving
to modern biomass energy sources. These are the same clients who are in the
dark and today have the option of selecting decentralised mini-grids for
their

Re: [Goanet] Mathany and BJP -the greening of Goa

2012-02-17 Thread Pandu Lampiao
Dea Ms. Carvalho, we seem to be the only ones to notice.

Well, liberal is good when communities understand and respect the
definition of 'freedom'. Unfortunately, the 'new green' is very
oppressive and freedom, is a word they never heard of. Or rather, the
freedom is to do as they please in a land so blessed by nature, to
over run your culture, to drive one in the corner till you can live
and breath no mo.

There is the lot that organizes the Vascu marathon (aai-hai, the
lovely Gul Pang running tru Bina gets the back of my little brain
fluttering) have this slogan...'beautifying Vascu'. Do these f*cks
ever get out of their air conditioned cars or wot? This city is
diseaseimagine, the first planned city on free fall!!

Yes indeed, having lived here way before the P*rtuguese leftone
has recently changed the lock on the front door. The front door has
never been locked and there was a time when foxes and wild cats roamed
the hill (and often raided the hen house)!

The other Mrs. Carvalho may not have known but the area below Alto
Brito (now known as Bina road) had families from Afgin*stan and a clan
of pathans (one of them played for the fammed Vascu club)...and their
festivities, their food are fresh in ones memory. They considered
themselves local, they spoke Concani, they were part of the community.
There was a welcome and openness in the way they went about their
daily lives. Ones parents would be mortified if they heard one speaks
a word against the 'green'. But this is a different lot, a lot that
has no rules, not a sense of community, a culture of wrecking. Its the
new 'green'. Something like the ghettos of Birmingham or for that
matter, Rexdale in Toronto. Its 'we are here' so deal with the rut,
our violence, on our terms, play by our rules.

One remembers quotes from the clever Dr. Jack Straw, a former UK
minister who famously refused to treat patients with their head
covered and told the newcomers in publicyou are in the UK, deal
with our culture or... We don't have a politician with a little sause
** ***lls to say this!!

Different times, troubling times and everyone is fighting for a
ticket, to make a quick buck. Then what?

 Dear Pandu,
If it comes as a surprise that fairly liberal people like you and me, turn
violently conservative and anti-migrant, it is because we have to live in
that hell-hole, wholesale brothel otherwise known as Vascu. By the time you
reach St Andrews Church the last vestige of its former glory standing against
the onslaught of mindless insanity, those of us who grew up in Salcete, fall
on us knees and pray to St. Andrews that such a horrific plague of
destruction never visits Salcete. Alas, Margao is already beset with a
 similar plague.

If anyone wants a look into Goa's future, I advise them like Pandu says, to
take a bus to Vascu and stare it squarely into its face. Incidentally, I
don't see any hope for the slumification of Goa being reversed. That door was
sealed the day Goa became part of India. We can only hope now that someone
will make a film of Goa's slums 50 years from now and we'll have Goans
writing paeans in the New Yorker telling us how wonderful and productive life
actually is in a slum like Goa-Darawi. If there is one thing Indians are
extraordinarily good at it is slummifying every city, town or living area
they set foot in. For proof, visit cities in London which are Indian
 strongholds.

 Best,

communities that there is after all cures in nature. Please note, when
and if you visit a herbalist, do buy herbs that are kanadian
grown...not imported. The imports are nuk%d, which the poets and
dreamers think have lost their curative properties.
Herbs are a slow and long term curative effects and a welcome
alternative is oils. The growing mid-eastern communities in kanada
have brought with them merchants who sells oils that are used as food,
cosmetic and medical/preventive use. Did you know that the only place
clean (no pesticide) regular olive oil comes from Morocco or Algeria?

Did you know what the second largest export after fur from Kanada in
the old days was?...likely still iswild ginseng...had a moratorium
till recently on its harvesting. The kanadian Quebec wild variety is
sought afterfor good luck, good health etc.

On a side notethere is an Indian doktor Shah (not sure he is a
nature cure or the garden variety-alopath) who passed away in Goa (a
few years ago). The late Drs Dr. Shah's message was that modern meds
don't cure...rather provide relief (or something to that effect). They
said that once ones body ingests over-the-counter variety meds, ones
body is (to use a Concani term) 'bostolem'. Contaminated or gone bad.

Since Newfoundland is a province over, they have a long tradition of
herbal cures and a lovely book festival...and the most interesting
writers in inglish!!

Ah, forget about health and the dirt of Goi, there is a Goichi doktor
and his French wife who make a very sought after blue-berry wine right
outside Halifaxin demand across @ fine dining places in NYC!
Injoy.

I never suffered from a cold again and also, it energises me for the rest

[Goanet] Candidate for Cuncolim

2012-02-17 Thread Nelson Lopes
Candidate for Cuncolim
In my student days, majority of those that i chanced to come across
were mostly Cuncolimkars in high positions and influence. There is no
denial of the fact that in the villages of Assolna, Chinchinim, Velim
Cuncolim. The highly placed individuals from Cuncolim, were educated
and financially well off ..It is my personal observation and not based
on any statistical survey. In the freedom struggle too Cuncolim
village was in the fore front and their contribution is worthy of
mention. Then during Opinion poll. it was Sabhu Dessai with his joyti,
unchallenged, entered the bastion of MGP strongholds and carried the
message against merger deep inside their hinterland.Only Sabhu Dessai,
from Cuncolim could have achieved this feat, fired with missionary
zeal and not motivated by any selfish interests to his very end. His
contribution is no way can be called insignificant and deserves all
the credit
Election to the Cuncolim Assembly became a bone of contention, on
which the villagers could not see either horizontally or
vertically. One wonders why they had to import an individual from the
distance not even contiguous with the boundaries of the constituency
and was also indistinct by any standards of objectivity. It is sad and
pathetic that there is no villager among them worthy of their trust
and confidence to represent them It is the division among them that
has allowed a rank outsider to prosper and stamp the mark of
indispensability
on their psyche It is genuinely hoped that the villagers will put
aside their petty squablings and see the rise of their own villager
and redeem the pride and honour as per the traditions , sacrifices and
contributions of their ancestors

Re: [Goanet] final list of candidates

2012-02-17 Thread floriano
Eugene must know that floriano is still a seasoned shippy at heart who loves
a poke here and a poke there in jestful ambience.
But the time for 'quickies' is long past as floriano is permanently
grounded.

:-)
No predictions for floriano. No thank you. He has stopped being Nostra
Damus.
But then with not just 2 candidates, but 2 and half candidates running, the
chess board is the prerogative of the players who will push the bottons on
the D-day.
2 and half because Ashley Gomes of Calangute who was supposed to file his
nomination papers under the GRA-GSRP ticket did not do so and we had thought
that he had developed cold feet or warm pockets. But it makes us happy to
see that he is in the race as 'INDEPENDENT'. It is well understood why he
got cold feet to file under GRA-GSRP. However, he is still a member of GRA
and the ticket which was endorsed by GRA still stands. Therefore,
technically, with Ashley Gomes supported fully by GRA there is now a
triangular fight with Agnelo Fernandes of INC, Michael Lobo of the BJP and
Ashley Gomes of GRA. The people of Calangute do have an escape route with
Ashley around and should use this opportunity to do the demolitions just
like the demolitions of Calypso hotel by floriano.

GRA is fully supporting Ashley Gomes for the 3 March Grand Motocross Race.
After that GRA no further ambitions as far as Calangute is concerned with
Ashley saluting the Chequered flags and will take things is stride as they
come.

Similarly, since Joseph Gonsalves of Quepem (Independent) will be fighting
on Two Candles symbol of GRA-GRSP, GRA is fully geared to support him him
to see that INC's Babu Kawlekar eats the mining dusts he has created.

Hopefully the GRA-GSRP team will be addressing the Quepem meet organized by
Joseph Gonsalves for Sunday 19 Feb.

Cheers
floriano
GRA-GSRP
PS: Eugene may rest assured that the Primary Schools in GOA with floriano as
jockey riding the Su-Raj CM shall be GOA Shining as indicated in GSRP's
Road Map for Goa.

These are just quickie shots. I await Floriano to make his
prediction. As for me, I think both his candidates will win and will
rule Goa with Floriano as CM ;-(
This primary school kid wants to learn from the guru.

2: However, I must ask: Fhu is this Doktor Istraw that Pandu is
talking about?  From the little I know, the only Straw in the UK
Cabinet (thus far) is a lawyer. And while, in Goa, lawyers are also
addressed as 'Dotor', that does not make them qualified to treat (or
 not) patients.
