[Goanet] Living among dacoits
50 years there was one Libia Lobo Sardessai squirting leaflets from a bharati helicopter that contained information that Goa was 'liberated'. Today Goa is infiltrated with dacoits who murder and pillage at will since the events of 61. Our puppets can not do anything but sympathise with the deceased. Like many unsolved murders there is no clue about the Old Goa dacoity. Our large and small communities are still sleeping with the 'liberation'. Will Goans ever wake up? BC

Eugene COMMENT: Okay here goes, let's hope the Moderators believe in being equitable! Subject: Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2012 10:25:05 +1030 The final chapter in the East African Goan Dodderer story. Thanks very much to the many of you who have stood up for an ageing dodderer like me. Here are some of your responses: Hi Eddie, I would just like to make the following observations ( without prejudice!), regarding Ms.Carvalho's comments about the recent London Goan meet, and the ensuing imbroglio. Personally, I found her musings about the recent Goan arrivals (P.P.F.) 'with jangly gold bracelets' and the 'aging' and 'doddery' East African Goan somewhat cynical and tasteless. Cyprian Fernandes, in my view, correctly took issue with her. Her rhetorical statement about being unaware that it was a crime to age, deliberately misses the point entirely. It is no crime to age, but it is almost criminal to randomly use the term 'aging' to try and mischievously diminish a segment of the Goan diaspora. Referencing the 'quasi' English accent is equally provocative, disingenuous and certainly designed to ridicule and raise one's ire. Perhaps Mr. Fernandes has a point when he blames the controversy on an editorial lapse, citing a failure at the 'risk analysis' stage. I must admit though, that your attempted defense of Ms. Carvalho is weak at best. To even suggest 'parody' elevates her article to a level of 'Byronic brilliance. You surely can't be serious! Now I hear that Ms. Carvalho has bowed out of Goanet, claiming, amongst other things, vitriolic attacks. Perhaps she underestimated the sensibilities of the 'doddery' East African Goan, and presumed she could scribble with impunity, without fear of recrimination. I would suggest that she is of a different mindset now, thanks to journalists like Cyprian Fernandes who dare to stand up and be counted! Regards, Raymond de Mello Oakville, Ontario, CANADA Oakville, Ontario, CANADA Dear Mr Raymond, You have a right to your opinion. That Mr Cyprian Fernandes is a journalist is also a matter of opinion. Best, Selma Carvalho On 23 August 2012 05:19, Selma Carvalho wrote: I'm happy to see Cyprian's mail shot into cyberspace with Goanet reader titled in bold, CONTROVERSY. Nothing sells like controversy even in Goan cyberspace. Those who write controversial stuff must be writhing in pain knowing their articles seldom get so much mileage. It is true that I referred to the East African Goan as aging and doddery (as in trembling with age). I had no idea at the time that referring to a community as aging would cause such a brou ha ha. I certainly didn't mean to hurt anyone. After all, I wasn't writing something particularly contentious, libel, accusatory, inflamatory or derogatory about this community. I had no idea, it was indeed a crime to age. Anyone who knows my writing for the past seven years knows that I don't do sensationalism. Gabe Menezes: RESPONSE: Come off it, please! You had to ditch the stuff about the alleged double agent on threat of legal action. That I am, at the core a quiet writer preferring to mull over things. That I have managed to write for the past seven years, more prominently for the past five, without causing hurt or calls for libel and defamation suits, I hold to my credit. It is however impossible to be a writer and not err occasionally. To cause hurt without meaning too. No writer, worth his salt, has not erred occassionally, or not used words that are in hindsight inappropriate. And if I have caused hurt, unintended as it was, I apologise. RESPONSE: At long last, an apology but why did it have to take so long? like pulling teeth. However, what is particularly hurtful to me, is that instead of remembering a record of four years of service to the East African Goan community of London, which has resulted in countless GoanVoice UK columns praising them, one book drawing their ethnographies, securing funds to record their oral histories, partnering with institutions to archive them, travelling on foot, car, train and bus carrying lumbersom equipment until I was physically sick, to record them, working day and night to transcribe them, producing a documentary and currently working on a publication to preserve these stories, I am pilloried without redemption. Writing should elicit a rebuttal. That is the main purpose of writing. It shouldn't however elicit a crusade -mostly led by people who have an axe to grind. That a short and fragile memory is also a Goan thing, is sad. As my mother always reminds me - today is a sad day, don't worry my darling, something better will happen tomorrow. COMMENT: Something better does not always happen tomorrow - I have lost a ton trading and the next day was worse! I commend you on doing the right

[Goanet] Temporary solution, permanent jam-CSE News Bulletin Sept 18, 2012
=== Fortnightly News Bulletin (September 18, 2012) This fortnight, Sunita Narain's editorial on our penchant for opting for short-term solutions to clear the traffic logjam in our cities comes against the backdrop of a court order which puts the Delhi BRT (bus rapid transit) back on its track for the moment. Soundly reviled and railed against -- mostly by users of private cars -- the BRT had recently suffered a serious setback in law courts. Just scroll down for the editorial and a Down To Earth web special... Among the other things that we bring you in this issue, there is our campaign against junk food, which will be taking another giant stride -- this time with a 'Junk the Junk Food' Quarterthon, being organised in Delhi on October 14, 2012. To join in the run, do check our website for details... === To subscribe to this newsletter, or any of our other newsletters, please click on http://cseindia.my2.in/cseindia/?p=subscribe To unsubscribe from this newsletter, just click http://www.cseindia.org/content/please-enter-your-email-id-unsubscribe-cse-newsletter If you have any questions or concerns about newsletter subscription, please contact Vikas Khanna at vi...@cseindia.org == EDITORIAL: Temporary solution, permanent jam by Sunita Narain == I write this stuck in traffic. Nothing unusual. But my location makes me realise, once again, how our highway route to progress is going nowhere. The road I am using is newly commissioned and expensive. It is the 28-km Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, which was built just a few years ago to take care of the explosion of traffic between the two cities. It is access-controlled, with a 32-lane toll plaza, and was to provide easy access and a fun ride. The concessionaire—built as it is under the famous public private partnership model—took all steps to keep it prized for cars. “Slow-moving” traffic like motorcycles, bicycles and even three-wheelers were banned on it. It did not last long. Soon traffic snarled up at the toll plaza became an everyday event; commuters decried the daily nightmare and the courts stepped in to fix it. Last month, the Punjab and Haryana High Court banned the collection of toll charges for 15 days, saying it was not satisfied that all efforts were being made to make travel easier. Cars could now speed past and not wait to pay toll. But all is not well. Cars speed past the toll and then come to a dead halt at the next junction—this is where I am stuck on my way back to office from the airport. And then it hits you how this highway is going nowhere. Every time a new expressway or a flyover is built, the point of traffic congestion just shifts; it does not disappear. Roads become a parking lot. How do we move ahead then? In this case government agencies still think they will crawl out of the traffic mess by doing more of the same. Pushed by the judiciary, they are considering adding toll lanes to accommodate more cars. But they do not stop to think that this will not work. In 2008, when the expressway was commissioned, roughly 0.1 million vehicles crossed the toll plaza. In just four years the number doubled. Now 0.2 million vehicles pass through the toll gates each day. More toll gates are built and more roads and flyovers commissioned. The solution is temporary but the jams are permanent. This is the point we miss. In Delhi, an experiment for the future options has gone horribly wrong because the city failed to understand its imperative. The bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor was conceived to provide fast movement to public transport vehicles. The idea was that bus transportation needed reliability, and this needed fast track corridors to move people, not vehicles. The plan was to build 14 corridors adding up to some 200 km to make the bus transportation network a real option for commuters. This combined with the metro train system would give Delhi a scaled up alternative for mobility. But from the very start the corridor ran into trouble. Car owners hated it. They said space had been reduced for their travel. The road space left for buses was envied. Once again, the judiciary came to the defence of the powerful. In this case, the Delhi High Court passed interim orders, destroying the corridor by allowing cars to move into spaces reserved for bicycles and buses. The report of the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI)—commissioned specially for the court—added to the frenzy against the bus corridor. More importantly, it showed just how blinkered the view of premier road planners is in the country. The institution can see roads, but not people. In the study, CRRI spoke to car owners to establish that speeds were down and concluded that the corridor was not working. It needed to go. But what it glossed over was its

[Goanet] The Histories of British Goans Project - The Documentary (Response to Eddie Fernandes by Rose Fernandes)
Dear Eddie Your explanation to us on goanet that led you to write again on the Cyprian/Selma matter is noted. Glad you jogged my memory to watch the Histories of British Goans Project - The Documentary recently released, which I have done, here are my comments: Thanks to the valued contributions from Sir John Johnson, Former British High Commissioner, Kenya and Peter Fullerton, Former District Commissioner, Kenya, this project is now beginning to ride on familiar road tracks to put our community in East Africa on the map of achievers before being filed in the archives of the British Library. Both these gentlemen spoke of our community not just the way they saw us but the way we actually were. Although the area in which I lived in Mombasa was largely populated by our community, there was also a sizable number from the Indian Sub-Continent. Our community did not live in exclusion from them, we were all united and I certainly remember the wonderful exchange of presents and sweets at Christmas and Diwali between us. As a child, this was all magic to my eyes and tastebuds. The excellent social activities centred around our clubhouses, first started in East Africa, and when we left, we carried this example to other parts of the world. It was a pleasure to hear what Edna Pereira from Mombasa said about domestic help in minute 8.49 who were very loyal and stayed with us for years and years, almost accepted as a member of our family. She has reiterated my recollections, if you recall I have written about this in previous goanet positings. There was a gentleman I recognised in a photograph in Minute 1.50, he was one of my late father's close friend, their friendship spanned many years in Kenya and continued in the United Kingdom. As a child, my parents treated us to an extensive tour of East Africa, including a cruise around Lake Victoria where the biggest prawns ever seen were served. Zanzibar was my favourite place. Fortunately, none of my immediate or extended family experienced the troubles that eventually took place in Zanzibar nor the expulsions from Uganda and Malawi so I am not able to comment on these parts of the video. Finally, Sir John Johnson's excellent observation in Minute 8.14 is noteworthy Don't think Goans ever complained. He was right, there was little for us to complain about, we had a wonderful time, enjoyed ourselves to the full and much of this zest for life has stayed with us to this day. Thanks to Goan Voice UK and yourself as editor, the academic success stories of the next generation, whose parents once lived in East Africa, are continually being reported for worldwide reading, rather than being hidden under a bushel. Having worked on large scale projects, I have inside knowledge of just how much work is involved and appreciate the initiative taken to get this project up and running. It will be good to see something worthwhile being catalogued for future interested generations in what is left of our community from East Africa especially its rich heritage and culture. Re: [Goanet] Inciting muslims
Rajan P. Parrikar wrote: The Indian 'liberals' were vociferous about M.F. Hussain's rights to artistic freedom and condemned (rightly, I might add) attempts to intimidate him. The makers of this film deserve similar freedoms but have been intimidated and threatened by the Islamists all around the globe for exercising those very rights that the Indian 'liberals' wanted for M.F. Hussain. -- r, The makers of this film would have won the Oscar, if there was an Oscar category for Best inciting picture. The film was made for one purpose only. [Goanet] : Living among dacoits
Bernard Colaco writes: 50 years there was one Libia Lobo Sardessai squirting leaflets from a bharati helicopter that contained information that Goa was 'liberated'. My thoughts. The majority of Goans never asked for nor condoned the Liberation. For the few who did condone this action by Jawaharlal Neru, done to prop up his image after a sound defeat in the north by China, has this liberation become an aberration ? The majority do not appreciate the influx of these teaming hoards coming across the Ghats (Ghantis) bringing with them all sorts of unpleasant traits like bribery, decoitry, corruption, and many social evils not known to Goans before the so called Liberation. Graham Green the travel author who visited Goa before the liberation said that of all the places in India he had visited, Goa was the cleanest and most hygienic. He mentioned our primitive toilets and the toilet cleaners ( Pigs) but he claimed that there were no feces in undesirable places and that primitive though our sanitary system was, it served its purpose and contributed to a cleaner and healthier environment than any other place in India, where the world is a toilet. Unfortunately, these undesirables have not spared Goa and have even transported their habit of sleeping and shitting and in fact living on the footpaths and bridges. Unfortunately we Goans, being a conquered meek and humble people can do little to rid ourselves of our conquerors. Unlike the Nagas, we lack the gumption, the courage, the fortitude, and the force necessary for such an action. Therefore, the only options we have are either stick with the status quo, or through the legislative process ensure that laws are passed and enforced, restricting the uncontrolled flow of immigrants into Goa and also restricting opportunities for these immigrants from taking jobs in Goa which rightly should be held and done by Goans. For this to take place, we need a strong legislative Assembly, Not the empty paperweights ( POKELE) who currently hold the reigns of power and lack the desire, fortitude and foresight to do the right thing. When this happens, then we can have control of our own affairs and shape our own destiny this has to happen fairly soon before we are overrun by the hoards and loose control to them. [Goanet] Verodiano Award 2012 for 'Goa 1556'
Verodiano Award 2012 for ‘Goa 1556’ The 2012 Vincent Xavier Verodiano Award has been conferred on Goa 1556 in recognition of its pioneering commitment to record Goa’s variegated past, project its kaleidoscopic present, and accentuate its pendulous future. Goa 1556 is an alternative publishing venture, founded by veteran journalist Frederick Noronha. The company name was inspired by the arrival of the Gutenberg printing press to Goa in the year 1556 – the first of it’s kind in all of Asia. As Mr. Noronha succinctly put it, the primary goal of his publishing company is to “democratise the production of knowledge”. The company, states Mr. Noronha, “doesn’t seek profits but exists because today, more than ever, Goa needs a voice to articulate its own priorities.” The editorial modulation of Goa 1556 is non-fiction writing related to Goa, with emphasis on books which “shed interesting new light on various aspects that help better understand the complex region called Goa.” As of August 2012, Goa 1556 has amassed an assortment of 45 titles to its credentials. Instituted in 1989 by Dom Martin, the objective of the Vincent Xavier Verodiano Award is to promote the well being of mankind through individual advancement in the field of art, music, literature, science, medicine or humanities. It strives to recognize individuals who may not have been relatively well known but whose works needs recognition. The award was founded by Dom Martin, in memory of his late father, Vincent Xavier Verodiano. The winner is announced on the 20th day of September, and the award is conferred on the 5th day of November. Goanet A-C-E! goanet at goanet.org
