[Goanet] Moniza Inam's article on Pakistan of the old days.
I can well believe what Pakistan must have been during those halcyon days. At a picnic/pilgrimage in Texas, some years ago, I met a number of Goans who had migrated to Pakistan some generations ago and had later settled in the Houston, USA, because of the turbulence which followed. They were very interesting and still cooked and brought along some of the typical Goan dishes (like manos with jaggery) which I had forgotten. Bernice Pereira

Re: [Goanet] Visiting Scribes held hostage by mining lobby at Cupem: Press Note for Kind Favour of Publication
GT - High Drama in Quepem Mining supporters hold hostage visiting scribes H - Mining Hooligans go Berserk Mob forcibly stops bus with 30 journos on field trip at Cupem, threaten to kill them. To, The respected Editors. Sub: Press Note for kind favour of publication. Sirs, The Goa Su-Raj Party is not at all surprised that the above has happened in Goa. The Quepem Police have a record of being the lap-dogs of the mine-owners. At worst, this Police Station is on record for having hauled up an 80+ year old lady to the AGUADA JAIL along with her teenage grand-daughter, who had chained themselves to a chair in the middle of the mining devastated road, to protest against the illegal mining in Caurem, not long ago. This Police Station has endlessly harassed the anti-mining activists by filing cases against them and even jailing them on the say so of the mine owners and at the behest of the Government of Goa. That the POLICE in Goa is on the PAYROLL of the miner owners is proved today to no end. It is reported that a letter was sent by the media organizers to the Quepem Police Station informing it of their impending visit to the area on a fact finding mission. That this information was leaked out to the pro-mining-lobby by the Quepem Police is not to be ruled out as a crowd like the one that has been reported cannot be organized at random. That this was a well-preplanned, move there is no doubt at all, as this cannot be accomplished without prior information. The Shah Commission Report clearly indicts the PRO-MINING-LOBBY for having hijacked the Commission's hearing at the Secretariat, Porvorim, when it says that conference hall was packed to the capacity by the pro-mining-lobby and that the cries for legitimizing illegal mining had drowned the cries of anti-mining activists. It further goes to say that what happened there was not democracy but anarchy. The Goa Su-Raj Party applauds the Goa Foundation for having taken this matter to the Supreme Court of India in the anti-mining PIL, suggesting that his Apex Court STOP all mining operations in Goa once and for all. It is hoped that the Apex Court will decide 'FOR' the welfare of Goa and Goans and not ''FOR' the welfare of Goa's illegal mine owners and their partners in crime. Re: [Goanet] Kashti Bamons
Don't quite understand your comment about perceptions and reality in the context of Curtorim and the so-called Kashti Bamons. In your reckoning does being a KB preclude oneself from turning one's village into a granary or a cradle of music and culture? Do you feel that putting on a kashti and working the field would be a barrier to also putting on one's Sunday's best and waving a maestro's baton while leading the church choir or the village group at a mando festival? If you don't think so then why your implied difference between perception and reality? There is no denying Curtorim's role in music but surely many other Goan villages also share that honor. Start with my Goa neighbor-village Siolim. Would you in comparison to Curtorim, trivialize its contribution? Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا fredericknoro...@gmail.com wrote: Obviously you're referring to Curtorim. [Goanet] Kazar (Response to Roland Francis from Rose Fernandes)
Dear Roland Pooh, bah, sitting on a high throne in Toronto, I have to excuse you being totally unaware of what has been going on in the United Kingdom and countries outside Goa with respect to Kazars within our community. The majority of young women in our community, residing in the United Kingdom, have become highly educated and during their college days, at work or in the real social and networking places like the English pub meet and marry English men or foreign men, not Goans. This trend has been going on for many years now and is definitely on the increase, most of my close friends are married to English men and my two young nieces are married to English men. In addition, a number of young women, highly educated or not, prefer not to marry at all, further diminishing the number of women in our community available for marriage to our young men here. In the past, men in our community residing in the United Kingdom also tended to marry outside the community but I have noticed this trend has started to diminish. The consequence of all this is that quite a large proportion of men in our community, including professionals, go to Goa to seek a bride, perhaps something quite extraordinary to you in the present world, but true all the same. These are not arranged marriages in the true sense of the word, but introductions to some suitable women. Within days they are engaged and then either marry in Goa and bring their brides to the United Kingdom or marry here in the United Kingdom. Would you say these men are incapable of finding a bride or needing a helping hand? During my last two trips to Goa, I have been advised that in Goa the age limit there is for most men and women to marry before they are 30, after that, jokingly I am told they are finished, not sure what this means, can only assume that this means finished for marriage. You have nothing to mock or chide Gabe about what he wrote, he is echoing what a lot of responsible and loving parents are hoping for their children, the desire to see them settle down. As a father, he has the best interests of his sons at heart, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. His sons are both professionals, holding good jobs but maybe for him that is not everything in life, he wants to see his sons settle down with a wife, a family and a home. It is love that makes the world go round, not a good job, expensive car or a big house! Internet dating and marriage agencies are flourishing all over the place and cashing in on this niche market. Our young professionals are working such long hours, they do not find time to meet the women of their dreams! Cynthia Fernandes is at least helping to address this situation in the Gulf area and using the valuable service goanet has to offer. In London, United Kingdom, the Goan village organisations and the Goan Chaplaincy play an important role for our people to meet and greet with possible introductions. [Goanet] Are Saraswats Brahmins or Merchants?
2012/9/28 William Robert Da Silva wrdsilva@ wrote I have a copy of the Sanskrit text, sahyadri khanda of skandapurana, which is attached spuriously to SP, but does not belong there. This text is a legitimacy discourse of Brahmana in the west coast, next being gramapaddhati in Kanara and Keralotpatti in Kerala. Here 'long donated life' to Parashurama until he 'creates' the land for his brahmana is no better or worse than the use of the Bible, acquisition of holy land, by American settlers. The story is ditto wherever people migrate, colonise the land, and the people settled before them, and dominate over the processes of subjugation, power exercise and domination that is lording it over them. This is known as left and right settlements in south India. And so on, and so on. -- Thanks to Augusto Pinto for this input. An interesting newspaper article written by a prominent Saraswat merchant (Datta Damodar Naik is the Monginis confectionery franchise holder in Goa) http://www.navhindtimes.in/panorama/gomant-vidya-niketan-fountainhead-progressive-movements Gomant Vidya Niketan Fountainhead of Progressive Movements Published on: March 24, 2012 By Datta Damodar Naik Gomant Vidya Niketan, Goa’s premier socio-cultural institution is celebrating its Centenary this year. The original name of the Institute was Saraswat Brahman Samaj, which seems to be a caste-based name if one forgets the context of progressive social movement witnessed in Goa’s social history in year 1910 and 1911. Gaud Saraswat Brahmins have seven sub castes which include Vaishnavas (also known as Sashtikars) Bardeskars, Smarths, Kudaldeskars, Pednekars, Bhalavalikars and Chitrapur. These sub castes apparently had internal animosity which included ban on Roti-Beti (ban on eating together and inter sub-caste marriages). In the first decade of the 20th century, there were efforts in Mumbai and Mangalore to bring two of above sub castes: Vaishnavas and Smarths closer and start a social interaction of Roti-Beti among them. These efforts yielded positive dividends. Inspired by this success there was a proposal to bring together all sub castes of Gaud Saraswat Brahmins. In the year 1910, in Belgaum, Sanyukta Gaud Saraswat Brahmin Parishad was held. Its echo was heard in the social corridors of the Goan Saraswat community. However, the community was vertically divided in rival camps with one camp advocating Eki (unity amongst all sub castes) and the other Beki (separate identity). The Beki camp felt that bringing together Vaishnavas and Smarths is enough and no further attempts should be made to integrate other sub castes. There were conferences in Kavalem of the Beki group followed by conference in Mapusa organised by the Eki group. Ultimately the Eki group, which stood for unity amongst sub castes, won and the Beki group acceded to the demand of integration of all sub castes of Gaud Saraswat Brahmins. The year 1910 was equally important in Portugal’s history. On October 5, 1910 revolutionaries marched to the palace of King Manuel. The King had to run away and revolutionaries took over the reins. The monarchy in Portugal ended and Portugal was declared a republic pledging its support to principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. The Republican State liberalised many rigid restrictions on Goans. In Margao, ten young men: Yashwant Suryaji Sardesai, Bhikaji Purshottam Pai Bhale, Kashinath Damodar Naik, Keshav Anant Naik, Sadashiv Vasudev Kenkre, Govind Sakharam Pai Panandikar, Ramchandra Vyankatesh Naik, Ramkrishna Narayan Bale, Keshav Krishna Naik and Atchut Naik, who were in age group of 17-18, came together to establish the Saraswat Brahman Samaj on Gudi Padava, which happened to be March 19, 1912. All founders were staunch supporters of the Eki (Unity) group and hence the name ‘Saraswat Brahman Samaj’ was the obvious choice with its progressive connotation given the context of victory of the Eki group in the just concluded Eki-Beki controversy. Nevertheless, the founders never nursed a castiest outlook... ... I'd like to make some surmises here. Datta D Naik suggests that they become one caste after 1910. Could it be that prior to this they may have effectively been a number of different small 'Castes' (rather than just 'sub-castes' which presumes the reality of one Master Caste like the Saraswat) performing a variety of functions sometimes merchants sometimes agriculturists sometimes coconut-plantation owners and so on prior to 1910? Could it be that these mainly coastal communities were only related by the fact that they had certain common habits like eating fish? And could it be that they had to make common cause and unite on account of the British censuses in order to improve their statuses within the conceptual framework of the four-fold varna system, the framework that the British Orientalists used in order to view

Re: [Goanet] Kashti Bamons
Roland, Looking down or looking up at people is largely a matter of perception, you would agree. Ditto about being disdainful about manual work. In my reckoning, there is no link between what someone can achieve and what ethnicity/caste/class one might be classified in. Or might claim to belong to. (On the other hand, of course, there is a huge link between access to opportunity and what one manages to do. Needless to say, for much of our history, opportunity has been linked to ethnicity/caste/class, making it seem as if the latter was crucial... and thus justifying a strange racism of sorts.) Who am I to trivialise Siolim's contribution, just as I would perhaps laugh off anyone doing the same to Curtorim's. Needless to say, the examples of being a granary and a centre for culture/music are also value judgements. How does one compare and judge one against the other? How does one value both of these against, say, skills in football or age-old tribal medicines that have met local needs for centuries? Based on our biases, I'd say... nothing else. It's interesting to see that caste bias can show up at all points of the pyramid. At the top and at the bottom too. Dadu Mandrekar, a Dalit campaigner in Goa, has pointed out how even some Dalits feel comfortable in having a hierarchy among themselves. -- FN On 29 September 2012 09:41, Roland.francis roland.fran...@gmail.com wrote: Don't quite understand your comment about perceptions and reality in the context of Curtorim and the so-called Kashti Bamons.
[Goanet] Govt asks mobile carriers to stop 3G roaming pacts
Govt asks mobile carriers to stop 3G roaming pacts (Reuters) - The government asked mobile telecommunication carriers to immediately stop providing third-generation (3G) data services outside their licensed zones through roaming pacts with each other, the secretary of the Department of Telecommunications said on Friday, adding to regulatory uncertainty in the sector. India's telecommunications market, the world's second-biggest by number of users, has been hit by regulatory uncertainties recently, including a Supreme Court order to cancel 2G cellular permits awarded in a scandal-tainted 2008 sale. Affected carriers will have to buy airwaves in an auction scheduled for November. The latest move comes after the government said in December that it was illegal to offer 3G data services beyond their allotted zones. The carriers challenged the government order before the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), which in July gave a split verdict. Telecommunications officials on Friday sent show cause notices as well as an advisory to stop (3G) services through such pacts to companies, said R. Chandrashekhar, the secretary of the Department of Telecommunications, which is part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. In effect, he is India's top bureaucrat in the telecommunications ministry. Although companies have 60 days to respond to the notice asking why action should not be taken against them for violating the rules, they will have to stop services immediately and inform the government within three days that they have complied with the order, he added. The government sold 3G airwaves in a 2010 auction that attracted much higher bids than initially expected and no single company managed to get spectrum in all of the country's 22 zones. Leading mobile operators Bharti Airtel Ltd (BRTI.NS), Vodafone Group Plc's (VOD.L) India unit and Idea Cellular Ltd (IDEA.NS) currently provide 3G services beyond their licensed zones through pacts between themselves. Uptake of 3G services has been slower than expected as a majority of the mobile subscribers mostly use their phones to make calls and also partly due to the high prices of such services. Of India's more than 900 million mobile connections, about 50 million are 3G subscribers and not all who have 3G use the premium services regularly. The services currently account for a very small portion of mobile operators' revenues. Bharti and Vodafone India officials declined immediate comment on Friday, while Idea officials were not available. Re: [Goanet] Kazar
Rose you and Gabe are good examples of fossilized Diaspora Goans whose thinking is about two generations behind. While I would expect that of you, Gabe having been in the RAF and in a Wall Street firm and all, pretty much surprises. I would have rested my case merely on what you write but with your line of thinking, let me spell it out. Rose Fernandes says: The majority of young women in our community, residing in the United Kingdom, have become highly educated and during their college days, at work or in the real social and networking places like the English pub meet and marry English men or foreign men, not Goans. This trend has been going on for many years now and is definitely on the increase, most of my close friends are married to English men and my two young nieces are married to English men. In addition, a number of young women, highly educated or not, prefer not to marry at all, further diminishing the number of women in our community available for marriage to our young men here. Comment: Wasn't it you who not long ago said you knew of no Goan in Canada who married a non-Goan. Nieces married to English men and they are who? Indian ladies? Why must everybody marry? Don't some want to remain single as a choice? Why must Goan boys marry Goan girls only and vice versa? Rose says: The consequence of all this is that quite a large proportion of men in our community, including professionals, go to Goa to seek a bride, perhaps something quite extraordinary to you in the present world, but true all the same. These are not arranged marriages in the true sense of the word, but introductions to some suitable women. Within days they are engaged and then either marry in Goa and bring their brides to the United Kingdom or marry here in the United Kingdom. Would you say these men are incapable of finding a bride or needing a helping hand? Comment: Slam bam thank you maam with a twist - I'll marry you after. OK if you were overseas in the 1890s to the 1950s. Not OK for this age. About incapable, I hope the helping hand' does not extend further, if you know what I mean Rose says: During my last two trips to Goa, I have been advised that in Goa the age limit there is for most men and women to marry before they are 30, after that, jokingly I am told they are finished, not sure what this means, can only assume that this means finished for marriage. Comment: One fossilized Goan meets another. Not too many of them in Goa remain, while those from elsewhere stubbornly abound. Rose says: You have nothing to mock or chide Gabe about what he wrote, he is echoing what a lot of responsible and loving parents are hoping for their children, the desire to see them settle down. Comment: Again, it's not what the parents want, it's what the adult children want. This mentality sees the parents next asking (hopefully after the marriage) when am I going to be a grandfather/grandmother? Too many assumptions here. That children are not gay, that they are not infertile, that they want children and they must have them on the parents schedule to oblige them. Also that to the married couple babies should be everything in life, their own plans a mere second. Fossils again. Rose says: Internet dating and marriage agencies are flourishing all over the place and cashing in on this niche market. Our young professionals are working such long hours, they do not find time to meet the women of their dreams! Comment: If young professionals cannot strike a life/work balance, then would you wish on your daughter or son that such a one marries them. Asking for trouble according to me. If you cannot meet the girl of your dreams on your own, good luck dreaming while speed dating, or meeting them through marriage agencies of various kinds. Rose says: Cynthia Fernandes is at least helping to address this situation in the Gulf area and using the valuable service goanet has to offer. In London, United Kingdom, the Goan village organisations and the Goan Chaplaincy play an important role for our people to meet and greet with possible introductions. Comment: You missed the whole point. Let the marriageable children find their spouses any which way they want. They have to live with the consequences. As long as Gabe and you don't lend them a helping hand in the matter so there can be all-round bitterness later. Cheers. Roland. Toronto.
[Goanet] Fwd: Pio Gama Pinto's Saab 96
A query from Kenya. Please help if you can! FN -- Forwarded message -- From: Saab 96 mysaa...@gmail.com Date: 27 September 2012 14:08 Subject: Pio Gama Pinto's Saab 96 To: fredericknoron...@gmail.com Dear Frederick, I recently view some of your images on flickr. in particular the one with Pio Gama Pinto, the Kenyan journalist, politician. I live in Nairobi, Kenya and I am trying to trace his car. He had a white SAAB 96 sport and this car features in nearly all media stories as it was this car he was driving when he was assassinated in 1965. Do, you have by chance any image with Pio Pinto and his SAAB 96 (I know they are there as I saw one once in a Kenyan newspaper in the mid-1990s), which you can share with me. I know the license plates were KHW 363 which is the registration for Nairobi for a car in 1964. I have contacted the Goan community already in Nairobi already (Awaaz Magazine, etc) and I am touch with them - and my aim is to trace the car (if it is still there or perhaps it has ended up as scrap), view it and then assess whether I could bring it back to its original state as valuable artifact of the recent (political) heritage of Kenya. Thank you in advance for your assistance Kind regards, Rene John Dierkx, PhD Nairobi, Kenya
