Aires Rodrigues,
Most people would give up after experiencing the kind of attack that you did.

I congratulate you for not doing so and for still challenging those who want to

Very strong bokeh!

But you didn't include Leonard and Queenie Fernandes (returned-early

[Goanet] Symposium & Town Hall Meeting: Report - Toronto

2012-10-14 Thread Albert Peres

Subject: Symposium & Town Hall Meeting: Report
Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2012 10:13:28 -0400
From: Canorient Association
To: undisclosed-recipients:;

Symposium on Global persecution and discrimination against Christians:
Promoting Religious Freedom Worldwide & Town Hall Meeting
The Canadian Goan Christian Group (CGCG), organized a symposium which
was sponsored (in part) by the Canorient Association of Toronto. It was
held on September 30, 2012 at St. Joseph's Church Hall in Mississauga.
The venue was packed with over 400 attendees and many were unable to
attend due to limited hall capacity.

Four of our fine community speakers at the Symposium described the
persecution of our Christian brethren in South America/Caribbean, Asia,
Middle East and Africa. They focused on the growing discrimination and
persecution against Christians in numerous countries and many in the
audience were surprised to learn about the extent and severity of the
persecution. The four speakers provided specific and value-added
recommendations on how to individually and collectively address the key
issue of religious persecution of Christians in a focused manner.

It was agreed that we must work closely with the recently created Office
of Religious Freedom in the Canadian Department of External Affairs in
mobilizing our specific concerns, championing the cause of freedom of
religion as a human right and demanding desired action. There was
consensus that while we cherish the right/privilege here at home, we
must ensure that the rest of the world can also enjoy this freedom. This
is an uphill task, but it is worthy of our resolve and effort.

The distinguished guests were the Canadian Minister for Citizenship,
Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney, Mayor of Mississauga
Hazel McCallion, Fr. Raymond de Souza, Fr. Marc-Andre Campbell, MP Bob
Dechert, MP Brad Butt, and Councilor Bonnie Crombie. The Minister shared
his many initiatives in this important area. He also expressed his full
personal and the Canadian Government’s support for upholding the rights
of Christians who are being persecuted in countries where they are in a
minority situation, such as in Iraq and Pakistan. He assured that this
issue would be the priority for the Office of Religious Freedom in
Ottawa. He also answered some of the questions received from the
audience on key immigration issues. Minister Kenney’s two post-meeting
Tweets speak volumes: “Had a great townhall meeting with hundreds of
folks from the GTA Goan Indian community.” and “What the Goan community
has achieved & contributed to Canada in little more than 30 years is
remarkable”.

Fr. Raymond’s keynote presentation was admirable for the depth of his
intellect, his mastery of theology and his concern for the problems
facing Christians globally. He cherished his Goan Catholic heritage and
stressed that we must uphold our values in public.

Mayor Hazel McCallion inspired the audience by her defense for Christian
values and said how pleased she was to become a part of the solution.
The four other guests present also expressed their full ongoing support.

Attendees were thankful for the opportunity to learn more about the
facts and to review what is being done at many levels and consider the
various ways and means to make our world a better place for all.

Stay tuned for the next event– and let us all work together!

No Valmiki that was 1962...

& the Dr Cui episode was slightly different. Got it from the next horse's mouth:

It was enacted not at not at Gaspar Dias but in Dempo's cadilac, crossing the

Panjim-Betim.

Dr Redualdo da Costa, the trusted embeded councillor to Dempo & Cia for
decades,
was fellow passenger. He regalled us at the celebrated sun-dial--the relogio--

By this time, mercifully for the wreched Goan Magnate, the ferry reached and a

[Goanet] [Goanet-News] An Exhbition of Goan Literature in Lisbon ... Oct 15, 2012 at 5 pm

An Exhbition of Goan Literature in Lisbon. Conference by
Miguel Real and Everton V. Machado on October 15, 2012 at 5 pm
--

Throughout ages, India has been the subject of numerous
Portuguese cultural manifestations. The historical relations
between the two countries show up till today in various
aspects -- linguistic, artistic, architectural, gastronomic
nature, or in habits, traditions, festivals and customs.

  The Indo-Portuguese Literary Dialogues, integrated
into the IV Indo-Portuguese Cultural Week, aim to
strengthen the ties of friendship between the two
peoples and make known to the Portuguese public
some of the most relevant literary productions on
India, and particularly on Goa, the smallest state
of the Republic of India, which, despite being
small in area, offers unique conditions to assume
as a privileged platform on inter-cultural dialogue
between the Indian subcontinent and Europe, where
  Portugal is situated.

Besides a vast historiography and non-fiction literature that
bind us, the fiction literature, particularly historical
novels and travelogues also facilitate our effort in
strengthening the foundations for a mutual understanding and
comprehension, thus contributing to the development of a
suitable intercultural awareness.

The fascination and the keen interest that India awakens in
the Portuguese, is evident in the extensive literary
production published in the 21st century. Heading the list
is, obviously, Uma Viagem A India (A Journey to India) by
Goncalo M. Tavares, an amazing and unprecedented book, which
was awarded the Grande Premio de Romance e Novela da
Associacao Portuguesa de Escritores (The Grand Prize for
Romance and Novel awarded by the Portuguese Writers
Association) and the Literary Award Fernando Namora/Estoril
Sol 2011, which, as Eduardo Lourenco says, is "a post-modern
navigation of the soul" portrayed as an anti-epic poem.

More recently Raquel Ochoa surprised all with her
Casa-Comboio, Premio Revelacao Agustina Bessa-Luis 2009
(Agustina Bessa-Luis Award 2009). Also that same year the
poet and writer Luis Filipe Castro Mendes, former ambassador
of Portugal in New Delhi, was awarded Premio Antonio Quadros
2011 for his book Lendas da India (Legends of India).

Now in 2012 it was the turn of Almeida Faria to give us the
Murmurio do Mundo (Whispers of the World), a very beautiful
account of his trip to India, enriched with the splendid
illustrations by Barbara Assis Pacheco. Also in 2012 we have
the affectionate account of Filipa Nery in her historical
novel, Da India com Amor (From India with Love), and the
latest novel by Miguel Real, O Feitico da India (The Spell of
India). Through the fictional writing of some of the most
respected Portuguese authors we can actually breathe in a
kind of kaleidoscope of colors, sounds and flavors, the
magical atmosphere of millenary India where tradition and
modernity are the two sides of a vibrant and dynamic world
which keeps on fascinating us.

The Indo Portuguese Literary Dialogues is an
initiative of the Organizing Committee of the IV
Indo-Portuguese Cultural Week (Goa) which intends,
through conferences and exhibition of Goan
Literature, to spread and promote books and
awareness about Goan and Portuguese authors, thus
establishing the necessary bridges and synergies
for new productions and future literary editions
that might rouse interest of a greater number of
readers. The Exhibition includes a selection of
the most important literary works published
recently in Goa, which the organisers thought worth
making known to the Portuguese public, and, in
particular, to the readers of the Goan community
  living in Portugal.

Goan Literature in Portuguese is undoubtedly a valuable
cultural legacy enriching the Lusophone Literature as a
whole, thanks to some works of renowned authors and prominent
figures in the cultural, social and political life in Goa,
from the nineteenth century.

Names from the past like those of Francisco Luis Gomes,
Paulino Dias, Floriano Barreto, Lino Abreu, Adeodato Barreto,
Orlando Costa, Gip (nom de plume of Francisco Joao da Costa),
Agostinho Fernandes, Nascimento Mendonca, Vimala Devi or even
Laxmanrao Sardesai referred today by writers in Konkani,
Marathi or English language, need to be honoured during this
week's commemoration. The Exhibition on Goan Literature will
be open to the public at the head-office of Camoes, IP: from
12th and 15th October, from 10.00 to 17.00 hours and later at
Casa de Goa, in Lisbon.

The conferences of the Indo-Portuguese Literary Dialogues
will take place on October 15, 2012 at 17.00 hours, at the
head-office of Camoes, I.P., Lisbon. Responsible for the

Title: October Weekend Musings
By Roland Francis
Source: Goan Voice UK Daily Newsletter of 14 Oct. 2012 at
www.goanvoice.org.uk

Some casual observations in Toronto and elsewhere, in the first cold Autumn
weekend of the year, a la the late Bombay Busybee (Behram Contractor)
tradition.

All Goans take to the cold except if they are old and have cash. Then they
flee to Goa at the first ache in the bones and promise to return after
Carnival. On returning they vow never to go again. That undertaking is valid
until next Fall.

Talking of old, never use the word with a Diaspora man. To him age is just a
number and a mid-life crisis. Must have to do with keeping up with the
missus, who is forever young at 29, even if 30 years ago.

The worse the physical mess Goa becomes, the more it attracts other Indians
and a certain type of Russian tourist.

All hopes for Goa were pinned on the current Chief Minister. They were
quickly belied. Thanks to a leading lawyer-activist, his misdeeds are
speedily exposed, even if he is not reputed to be as corrupt as his
predecessor.

The Goan in Bombay used to visit his ancestral home once a year in summer.
He had no money then. Now he goes there once a month and to a many-starred
hotel as he has the money but no home.

Who says Goan cooking in Canada is on the decline. The tradition is alive
with more and more people offering home cooked fare even as prices increase.
Goans from Pakistan make sumptuous biryani.

The Hindu Goan population in Toronto is miniscule unlike that in the US. Is
it the warm temperatures of Texas and California that beckon or are they all
doctors, welcome there but educationally discriminated against, here.

A few more Goan priests are appearing in the city. Some have come from Goa
and some are the children of people here. They are a welcome sight whether
their accents are Goan or Canadian or neither.

There are people with very interesting backgrounds you sometimes meet. X's
father was the Chief Chef of an Indian maharaja. X was educated and trained
in the precision trades in Switzerland. Now he makes parts in a small firm
for NASA rockets and satellites. You would never have guessed, he being so
simple and unassuming and Goan.

Canada has no Goan politician of the stature of Keith Vaz of Britain. Don't
know whether that's a good or bad thing.

Everybody in Goa knows at least 5 people in Toronto. And they tell you that
they all live in Mississauga. On a visit to the city they will come with
their names and addresses duly logged and you are expected to escort them to
visit each of the 'names' after you have done Niagara Falls and the CN
Tower.

The state liquor monopoly the LCBO, is finding that feni sells. But the
exporters are obscure outfits and it is being sold for about 10 times the
Goa price or the cost of genuine scotch on the shelves. Didn't know freight
is so expensive or is the LCBO gouging on the pretext of using their profits
to help fund the Ontario universal health system.

The global recession does not seem to have hit Canada badly. Don't hear of
too many Goans losing jobs or not getting them. The only casualties are our
young University under-grads who find their option is limited to further
study.

And on a happy note, Christmas is approaching sans the usual commercial hype
that usually starts in October but hasn't, this year.

Sharp Bro E. Good. Many thoughts put on Goanet are good on and on
(considering perhaps, girand (eclipse) and all) that a few things get in
the way: Now on to labeling thoughts as "stray thoughts" and in other
cases as errant. Nothing against Antonio either

Now, plausible reasons could range from:
1. Having been rendered emasculated, along with its variants.Or worse --
having achieved emasculation.
2. Turning PC, or getting turned ON by Political Correctness. Some of us
have gone through this baizonponn but fortunately turned a new leaf, or
went back to the tree that spouted us. Ginyaan port'ton eilem/"dislem",
meulem. Thank God.
3. Misinterpreting ones place and path in modernity, or the importance
accorded to living and being in it in India.
4. Losing our marbles, or better still ball (not balls). Kheltam kheltam
sandlo boll konnui soddun diyat re.. (E DeSouza in sharing his list does
our minds good service)
5. Curry favoring with those who we feel are together, but repeatedly
forgetting that they do not have the experiential knowledge.
6. Hoping that our sons and daughters will find good matches, so 'tis
better not to rock the boat. Better to land in someone mand/mandent (lap/in
the lap) then at the bottom of the Mandovi. (Disclaimer: No sons or
daughters). Umtea kouxear uddhik. : ) And if any flippant thoughts emerge
at this point, remember its not about being childless, but consider the
possibility of being child free, and then also consider that being child
free does not in any way suggest being against children. (If you will this
is a tangential thought/ or a logical extrapolation).

[Goanet] Mining meddle: No brides for many a groom

2012-10-14 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

SURLA: The most common sight on the Surla-Pale-Velguem stretch of Bicholim
taluka is that of dysfunctional mines, kulaghars and bachelors.

Lush green kulaghars (plantations) featuring mainly slender areca nut trees
and aromatic spice plantations run through the length and breadth of these
sister villages. They are punctuated by paddy fields at every turn in the
mud roads. With mining operations stopped, the verdant picture is the
perfect example of appearances being deceptive.

Look closer and mucky silt is part of the sweet-water streams that irrigate
the kulaghars; dust particles float on drinking water in wells; and oil
from mining trucks washed in higher areas of Surla float in the water of
paddy fields below. Most stark is the sight of elderly women feeding
fertilizer to trees in kulaghars against the backdrop of heaps of mined
dumps and ravaged hills.

Little wonder then that the region appeals little to brides-to-be.

Velguem hardware store
owner Prashant Sadhale is approaching middle-age. Several rejected
proposals later, his marriage prospects look bleak. "It is a social problem
caused by mining," he says, "Bachelors can be found in every other house
here. Girls agree at first, but all changes when they see the village."

He adds, "Everything seems green now as the mines are not operational. Last
year at this time, mining silt stuck to every leaf and flowed through every
crevice of the village."

A kulaghar owner from Surla, Uday Natekar, echoes Sadhale, "I am past 35
and still unmarried. Girls in these three villages do not want to marry
within the area as they can easily tie the knot elsewhere and escape the
ill-effects of mining. And
brideswho have seen
better while working in Panaji will never settle down for a
groom from here. Never."

An elderly farm help, Pandurang Pednekar, narrates how two grooms of a
family "made the mistake" of wooing Maharashtrian brides. "The girls
agreed, but when they came to see their husbands' homes they ran away."

Sadhale explains that women are willing to tie the knot only if the groom
agrees to shift residence to neighbouring towns such as Ponda, kilometers
away from respiratory illnesses and pothole-infested roads.

While some grooms grab the opportunity, others prefer to tend to their
ancestral kulaghars, some of which date back to almost 10 generations.

It is not uncommon to seek proposals from girls living in other
mining-afflicted regions like Sanguem or parts of Karnataka, who, the
grooms here feel would be more tuned in to the hard life.

According to Natekar, the problem is more acute in families that are
well-off in terms of finances and social status. "In the case of boys from
poorer families in the village, they find girls as the brides want to get
away from the financial crisis at their maternal homes. But those looking
for educated and well-off brides stand little chance," he says.

It only adds to the woes of the grooms that despite the lack of brides,
inter-caste marriages are shunned upon in these villages.

"When mining was on, our relatives living in towns and cities would hate to
visit our village even if it was for a puja. How then can we expect girls
who have lived in better conditions to opt to settle here?" asks an elderly
woman in Pale.

Refusing to give her name, she adds, "If you go out even once in the day,
your clothes are grime-covered and need to be washed. You sweep the house
and within seconds mining dust settles down again. No potential bride wants
a life of constant washing and cleaning."

As we turn to leave, we ask a prospective groom if his chances are better
now that the village looks a bit green, and pat comes the reply, "If you
know of a girl who is interested, why not?"

GULAB magazine confers 1st NRI Shining star of Konknni Stage title upon Gracy
Morais

Kuwait: At a recently held function commemorating the 30th year celebrations of
popular Konknni magazine, GULAB conferred its first ever title upon a Konknni
Tiatr Artiste, Gracy Morais, in Kuwait. Gulab Konknni Mogui Kuwait felicitated
Gracy, popular Konknni stage actor and singer in Kuwait, bestowing the coveted
title "Shining Star of Konknni Stage in Kuwait". Gracy received the memento
from the hands of Fausto Da Costa, Editor of Gulab Magazine, who was on a short
visit while Vice President of the Konkani Mogi Kuwait (KMK), Salazar placed a
crown with a glittering star on Gracy's head aptly matching with the title
conferred on her.

Gracy Morais with GULAB Editor Fausto Da Costa
Gracy has been an active member on Kuwait Konknni Stage for the last thirteen
(13) years acting in several local tiatros, participated in musical shows, and
competitions, has been a member of Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS),
Goan Welfare Society (GWS), Crystal Focus Club, and also toured some of the
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States and the United Kingdom. She has also
played the main protagonist in Kuwait's first Konknni feature film titled
"BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion" produced and directed by T-Bush and premiered
in Kuwait.

Gracy has to her credit Best Actress and Best Singer (Female) awards at Kala
Academy Tiatr Competition in 1997 in Goa, and several other awards in Kuwait
for her versatality, grace, singing and acting prowess. She has featured both
singer and actor in of several Konknni CDs and VCD produced in Goa, India, and
Kuwait. She also has a flair for writing short Konkani essays and poems.

The function was organized by Konkani Mogi Kuwait and attended by special
invitees along with KMK committee members headed by Domnic Fernandes. Gracy
hails from the picturesque village of Ribandar in Goa and has a MBA degree in
Healthcare Sciences, and together with her husband, Augusto and her two
children, continues to enjoy her cherished talents of singing, acting and
social work. She is the daugther of (Late) Luis Rodrigues (musician) and
