[Goanet] Francisco Sardinha's Dabolim Assurance???

2013-02-17 Thread Arwin Mesquita
Recently South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha has been strongly advocating that
Goa can have Dual Airports i.e. Dabolim MOPA. Apparently he says he has
got assurances/letter from the Centre. I would like respected Mr. Sardinha
to please give Goans an environmental and economic feasibility report
justifying the same; and not some flimsy letter from the Corrupt Congress
Government at the Centre.

We got assurance from the same party in 1961 that Goa's identity will be
preserved and we all know what happened to that promise!! Perhaps he is
right that 2 Airport might be open, question is will International airlines
generally find it economical to fly to 2 airports? Or is Mr. Sardinha
planning to convince Airlines to make 2 Stops in Goa? Will one extra
airport simple kept open to burden the taxpayer for pacifying Goans,
without much relevant International Flights coming into Dabolim?

I request Mr. Francisco Sardinha to work for Goan Interests and not for his
masters in Delhi!!
-Again to re-iterate if he is convinced then please convince us with a
proper feasibility report justifying the economics of having 2 Airports in
Small Goa!!

Rice Transplanter - A new Boon for Mechanized Cultivation

Team Mangalorean

Mangalore: Gone are the days where farmers had to spend more money on
labourers. This is an era of mechanized cultivation. Rice Transplanter, an
instance of innovative technology has come to help the farmers of coastal
districts.
The Rice Planter machine will help the farmers in cultivation. It is very easy
to operate and it is a profitable one. In olden days people used to spend more
than Rs 12,000 by appointing 15 to 20 labourers for planting the rice paddy.
And for one acre of land it was taking 8 to 10 days but now with the help of 2
labourers the same work can be done.
Speaking on the occasion Elias D'Souza said, I have cultivated 5 acres of
land and got an yield of 18 tonnes of rice. He further said that with the
help of the Rice Transplanter, the sowing work will be done within a day,
whereas it was taking 12 days to sow. Even the production is more, he
said.Eliaz used 10 tones of manure, one kg borax, 8 kgs tin sulphate and 8 kgs
chalk for each acre of land and has got a good yield. According to the advice
of the Farmers Communication Centre, Agriculture department, Elias bought the
Rice Transplanter for Rs 1.60 lakhs. He also rents the Rice Transplanter to
his neighbours for use. His son Suraj said that the Mechanized cultivation has
brought good profit, the Rice Transplanter works faster than humans saving
more time and energy.

2013-02-17 Thread floriano lobo

GOA: WHAT [17feb13] NEWSPAPERS SAY - COMMENTS
http://www.goasu-raj.org/gen/news/2914.asp

H: NOW, A FERVENT PLEA FROM TALSANZOR - Spare our houses from demolition,
say residents, mostly comprising of the ST community [Pg2]

COMMENTS:
When 20 point programmes across the State have utilized Comunidade lands to
house mostly migrants, why should Talsanzor residents be de-housed? GSRP is
ceased of this new development and sympathizes with this neglected Goan
community. It may not be that the Govt has suddenly fallen in love with
COMUNIDADES. It is certainly a message to these people to say Look here,
you VOTE for the RSS-BJP lock stock and barrel and the houses will not be
demolished. It is a wonder that Vijay-bab has not seen thro' it. It is not
possible for Manohar-bab to think beyond creating VOTE-BANKS, whereas his
mentor from Gujarat is capitalizing on the vote-banks of others to get to
the top job.

H:VIJAY CHIDES SARDINHA'S UTTERANCES ON MOPA [Pg2]
NT:VIJAY OBJECTS TO SARDINHA'S STATEMENT ON DABOLIM, MOPA COEXISTING [Pg3]
COMMENTS:
Vijay? Even a child will have no respect for this grown up man, who has been
Goa's Legislator and now an esteemed MP, for his flip-flop on Dabolim and
MOPA. Does he know if he is coming or going? This man must realize that
Dabolim will be in the Navy's bag once Mopa comes along. This is exactly the
Navy wants. Sure. Two airports can co-exist within Goa and within less than
150 NM from each other. But one will be solely a Military Airport and the
other a Civilian. There will be no feasibility problems whatsoever with one
Civilian Airport at all times. Sardinha, Sir, Capisce? It is shameful to be
educating you on this basics.

H:CM ASSURES TO CHANGE FACE OF MAPUSA IN NEXT THREE YEARS [Pg2]
NT.DEVELOPMENT OF MAPUSA IS ON FAST TRACK, SAY CM [Pg3]

COMMENTS:
Haven't we heard this before? Example: During his tenure of 2002-2004, I had
the privilege of sending him an email saying: Manohar-bab, you are the son
of Mapusa. Don't just polish Panjim because it is your constituency. Also
look at Mapusa which required 3 things badly. (1) Mapusa sewerage treatment
plant as the Mapusa River is getting poisoned with entire Mapusa's raw
sewage. (2) Mapusa Market which need attention badly and which is on the
Touristic Map of the World, and (3) Kadamba terminus which is an eyesore.

I was overjoyed to get the following cryptic reply: Florian-bab, you will
see vast improvements in Mapusa before Christmas. Since my email was
sometime in September, I waited for the Christmas to come and go. Nothing
happened to Mapusa. The polish was concentrated even further on Panjim.
Therefore I replied to his email in March to say: 'Manohar-bab ! WHICH
CHRISTMAS DID YOU MEAN??

I guess we, not only Mapxemkars but entire Bardezkars will have to wait
until the arrival of Christmas 2013 for Mapusa to at least be dutifully
swept clean not before 6 a.m. but at least by 4 p.m? :-)

NT: CM CALLS TO INCULCATE HIGH VALUES AMONG CHILDREN [Pg.3]
COMMENTS:
Two things that CM may do to accomplish this task. (1) Ask Flavian Dias, the
veteran errand-boy turned Freedom Fighter ( by passing press-statements from
newspaper to newspaper offices in Bombay prior to 1961) to develop another
RSS-Sponsored- values depicting VCD that can be circulated to all schools
to be mandatorily shown the children just like the RSS-sponsored erstwhile
Freedom Movement of Goa VCD, (2). Hang a life-size photograph of CM
adorning the kali-topi, khaki cheddi and gilli-danda, marching in the
RSS-Parade, at every school assembly, first thing in the morning, so they
may following in his foot-steps. VOILA !

NT:PRESIDENT CONCERNED OVER FREQUENT DISRUPTIONS IN PARLIAMENT [Pg10]
COMMENTS:
The other day we read about a UP farmer writing to the President of India
asking for permission to commit suicide. Could we have the President write
to the farmer asking for the same, instead??? It will do this stupid nation
a whole lot of GOOD.

NT:CJI CONCERNED OVER FALLING STANDARDS OF LEGAL PROFESSION [Pg10]
COMMENTS:
Yes, we agree with the CJI, completely. That, and a curb on 'export' of
these falling standards of LEGAL PROFESSION to other western countries,
especially the US where an Indian Lawyer has been recently sent to jail
caught for terrible 'lies' to promote her carrier.

GT WEEKENDER: GOA LOKAYUKTA IMBROGLIO: AIRES WANTS AG TO QUIT [Pg3]
COMMENTS:
Aires is perfectly right. Goa cannot afford to have a boot-polisher in the
shoes of the esteemed AG. It is demeaning. It is another thing altogether,
that Manohar Parrikar does not wear any shoes that we know of. May be he has
his RSS-PARADE Marching shoes kept in absolute mirror finished polished
readiness for unexpected emergency use??

Scandals in the defence forces of India have come to stay since the very
first scandal of New India with Jawaharlal Nehru as PM and Krishna Menon as
the Indian High Commissioner of Britain in 1948
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_scandal_case. If otherwise desired, it is
going to be just the wishful thinking.

Here at GOA, the Indian Navy is mired in scandals after scandals after
having occupied ( as spoils of war) Goa's only CIVILIAN AIRPORT at Dabolim
since 1961and is consolidating its position full swing to retain this
airport illegally at whatever costs and by even being the instrument of
instigation for the development of another Civilian Airport at MOPA. It is
a pity that Goa's Political class is blind to the realities of losing
Dabolim's centrally located civilian airport to the navy for good once this
MOPA disaster comes up, if at all. This must not happen, and this will never
be allowed to happen. If at all this happens, then it will, over thousands
of dead bodies of GOANS who will go down fighting. GSRP, in 2017, when
elected to power, will see that the Indian Navy is kicked out of Goa with
such a powerful kick that it automatically lands at Karwar Sea Bird Base,
where it belongs. Approximately tens of thousands of crores of rupees have
been allocated/spent from the taxpayer's money for this prestigious project
but the people on the acquired land are yet to be evacuated, so it is
believed.
http://www.navhindtimes.in/goa-news/breaking-news-indian-navy-planning-new-air-base-karwar ;
http://zeenews.india.com/news/nation/navy-plans-rs-10-000-cr-expansion-of-karwar-base_786155.htm;
http://www.frontlineonnet.com/fl1518/15180680.htm. The Delhi-Nagpur-Baramati
and elsewhere based HIGH COMMANDS operating in Goa to the detriment of the
people of Goa will never want to eject the Navy from Dabolim and they will
be more than happy to give Goa's sole Civilian Airport for free as the
spoils of war to the Indian Navy on a silver platter. If at all, these
shallow guys like MP Sardinha, who call themselves GOANS, will beat their
chests and pull their hair to save themselves from the ire of the people of
Goa when they have helped Indian Navy to rob Goa's Dabolim Civilian Airport.

[Goanet] Roland Francis: Man of the Cloth from La Motte

2013-02-17 Thread Eddie Fernandes
68 years ago in the tiny village of La Motte, 600 kms from Montreal, a
future Pope of the Catholic Church may have been born. His father with 7
other children was a farmer like most of the men in that remotely rural area
although later with self-education he became a school trustee and
administrator. Quebec was then staunchly religious and Catholicism ruled
every aspect of people's lives, often stifling their social freedom. Young
Marc Ouellet grew up to be an avid sportsman and outdoors buff, fishing and
hunting as often as he could. His religious transformation took place when
he was injured in an ice hockey game and he began to read the only books
available to him - of the Saints and of his religion. When he was ordained a
priest in the late 60s, Quebec after the Quiet Revolution was already going
the other way, divesting itself of its Catholic influence, leading to the
province taking over health care and education which was in the hands of the
Church until then. In 1970 during the October Crisis, sovereignist
francophones under the FLQ rebelled against the administration, leading to
the imposition of the War Measures Act. During this very time, Ouellet was
sent to teach in South America where he remained until the new century.
Returning to his native land, ultimately as Cardinal of Quebec City, he
found a completely different civil society from when he left it. Sunday mass
attendance was ghostly and the church had completely lost its influence.
Ouellet was disoriented, encountering much criticism from politicians,
women's groups and the media when he said abortion was a moral crime even in
the context of rape. He retained his staunch conservatism and lost the
chance to build bridges with his fellow Quebecers.

Elsewhere meanwhile, in Europe, as in Quebec, churches were becoming empty
chambers. People were embracing secular and radical ideas of homosexual
equality, contraception, sex and laxer moral standards in dating and
marriage. The US led most of these revolutionary changes, with their clergy
quickly adapting to the new social standards. This adaptation often brought
them in conflict with the Vatican old guard. In less than two generations,
Catholicism and religion had undergone a sea change. China and India,
emerging Asia's two biggest Catholic population centers were engrossed with
their changing economies and Africa a later rising bastion of Catholic
conversion was still engrossed in life after colonialism, finding itself
embroiled in border wars and tribal violence. Meanwhile the Catholic Church
found itself in the middle of a huge sex scandal, the ramifications of which
are still unfolding, and another scandal, this one a gigantic mesh of
Vatican corruption.

Can Ouellet or any other Pope sort out all the problems that beset their
world today? What must the Church do to make itself relevant to their flock
while maintaining the tempo of rising numbers of devout followers in Africa,
Latin America and India-Asia? A century ago, the Catholic population of
Africa was 1 percent, now it is 21. Half a century ago India was 1 per cent
Christian, today it is 5. China had almost no practicing Catholics under
communism, today they are a large and influential body. Catholicism is
challenged in the old world except among immigrant communities, by the
temptations of progressive society. The evangelical Protestants, well funded
and spiritually motivated, are making wide inroads in largely Catholic South
America and in Muslim Africa. In China, India and the rest of Asia, they
work like well-oiled machines, constantly expanding their influence. Islam
is another challenge, considering it their duty to in Africa to wage a
crusade against Christian conversion, flush with weapons and funds from
extremist Gulf Arab quarters.

In Goa, the Portuguese seem to have done a good job with religion. Goan
Catholics have remained more or less faithful to their faith and religious
traditions although riddled with comical hypocrisy. The old vestige of caste
has gone underground, but rears its ugly head when occasion demands.
Brotherly love goes out the door when it comes to land or money. Bribery,
cheating corruption and crime are common as with the rest of the population.
Priests are no longer the moral beacons of yore and the higher clergy seem
to do nothing about it. Bombay, the most influential Indian diocese has a
Goan Cardinal who is also the head of the chapter of the Asian Bishops
Conference but he is too mild, decent and studious where a firmer,
take-charge prince of the church is called for. But who knows what the
future holds. For the sake of the church, we wish for a Pope who brings
better times although that is a difficult task.

FN,
Since this cruise left from Galveston, Texas, there would be few if any Goans
as passengers on board. Had the departure been from Florida or any port in the
Caribbean, it would have been a different story. At this time of the year, you
usually have groups of 40 or more Goans from Toronto going on Caribbean cruises
every week.

As for Goans as crew members, I hope there were a lot of them. The crew has
been getting rave reviews by the passengers. Almost every passenger has said
the crew went beyond the call of duty.

I have been looking to short the Carnival Cruise Lines stock ever since the
engine room fire. However, this particular ship is registered in the Bahamas
and that adds another layer of complexity to the legalities.

What I find perplexing about the Carnival people though, is that the ship left
from Texas but they decided to tow the crippled ship, one without electricity
or indoor plumbing to Alabama i.e. the only US state with no electricity or
indoor plumbing requirements.

The latest news is that a bus with some ex-passengers who were being sent from
Mobile to Galveston broke down. Some of those passengers were sent to the
nearest airport to catch a flight. The flight they were booked on could not
leave because of electrical problems on the plane.

If I was religious, I would be inspecting those particular ex-passengers scalps
for 666.

Let me add another strange paragraph from Roland Francis:

The above makes absolutely no sense if the Philippines is an Asian country.
