[Goanet] Who are you ?

2013-06-16 Thread Antonio Menezes
Asks Ana Maria Fernandes (June 14 ) . Methinks the question should rather
be
''What kind of Christian are you ? ''
Jesus Christ preached between 30 and 33 AD. After his death , his
doctrines were
avidly followed not in Judaea but in Rome itself where the socalled slaves
(people
from various parts of the empire i.e. lands around the Mediterranean Sea )
accepted Christianity and rallied round it to fight the official Roman
religion of
sunworship. It remained an underground movement in catacombs for the next
300 years when in 325 AD Roman Emperor Constantine convened a Council
(of all religious sects) in Nicaea ( a town in Asia MInor -Turkey) and
proclaimed
Christianity to be the official religion of the Roman Empire.

From 325 AD to 1510 the Portuguese Christianity was no doubt, purer than the
pure
Christianity in Rome. So it was pure Christian doctrines that were imposed
upon
Goans. But then the Christianity became somewhat blemished in the hands
of
our glorious bahmon padris who retained the Hindo caste system through
religious
organization called confraria.

[Goanet] Priest files for anticipatory bail (??)

2013-06-16 Thread JoeGoaUk
Priest files for anticipatory bail (??)

June 15, 2013 - Herald
MARGAO: The Chaplain of Infant Jesus Chapel, Murida-Cuncolim, Fr Saluzinho Vaz,
has moved the South Goa Sessions Court for anticipatory fearing arrest by the
Cuncolim police. The bail plea will come up for hearing before Judge Vincent
D’Silva on June 17.

The applicant has stated that Episcopal Vicar, acting on behalf of the
Archbishop, has allegedly lodged a complaint against him and alleged that he
was called by the Cuncolim police.

In his application, Fr Vaz said that by order dated May 4, he was relieved from
his duties in Murida and was asked to vacate the Chapel premises on June 1. He
has contended that Ecclesiastical authorities have no right to simply relieve
him without a suitable posting.

When Cuncolim PI Raju Raut Dessai was contacted, the PI confirmed to have
called Fr Vaz after being requested by church authorities to to do so. The PI,
however, stated no FIR was filed against Fr Vaz.

Extra:
Looks like the Chaplain was to leave the Chapel on 1st June and a new Chaplain
Fr. Santana Quadros was to take over.

Extract from Bishop circular - 14 May 2013 published NT

CP-P/107/2013: Rev Fr Saluzinho Vaz relieved from the post of Chaplain of Child
Jesus Chapel, Murida.
CP-P/108/2013: Rev Fr Santana Jose Agnelo Quadros appointed Chaplain of Child
Jesus Chapel, Murida

Looks like the term 'relieved' here also mean suspension or long Break (without
assigning new postings)?
There are more than one priests that fall in the category in the recently
published circular. One is from Santana Talaulim near Curca.
CP-Of/36/2013: Rev Fr  Romualdo Lourdino Pereira relieved from the post of
Parochial Administrator of St. Anne’s Parish (Santana),  Talaulim.
CP-P/37/2013:  Rev Fr Caetano Johnsie Pereira appointed Parish Priest of St.
Anne’s Parish (Santana), Talaulim

Not very sure what got Xri Pinto all so worked up.

From what I see, Gabe merely posted an article from DM.

Xri Pinto, as long as you are there (at least), Nobody is applying to your

Additionally, what is 'our' to Gabe may not be 'our' to you or me.

So, why do you believe Gabe put his foot in his mouth?

I believe it was actually you who did that, replete with a Payal Chappal in tow.

It has been reported out of Australia that a man was brought to life after
being clinically dead for 40 minutes. This was made possible by a relatively
new cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedure.

Colin Fiedler, 39, from Dandenong in Victoria died after suffering a heart
attack at the Alfred Hospital last June. According to the Australian Herald
Sun, doctors were able to revive him with the aid of a mechanical CPR
machine coined the AutoPulse and a portable heart-lung machine to keep

The AutoPulse is 100 percent non-invasive and works to move blood through

according to manufacturer Zoll. First commercialized in 2003, the device

If I am not mistaken some time back there were a couple of so notion on
tipping presented on Goanet. In the following article, what I found
interesting was the following and particularly the last line. And btw, we
of course know about the low wages etc., so spare me / us that angle.:

Tipping, and the aristocratic idea it exemplifies, is what we left Europe
to escape, wrote William Rufus Scott in 1916.

His anti-tipping manual, The Itching Palm, went on: In a republic where
all men were supposed to be equal, some cannot be superior until they grind
other men into dust. Tipping comes into a democracy to provide that
relation.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 12th Sunday of the Year

2013-06-16 Thread Jude Botelho
13-Jun-2013

Dear Friend,

People attract other people to themselves by promising them a good time, fame
and fortune. But whenever people promise good fortune free of cost we begin to
doubt and wonder where the catch is. Our life experiences tell us there is no
easy way of life, free from all pain. Jesus invited us to follow after him and
showed us how he did it. We appreciate our own Dads especially because they
have undergone so much for us. On Father's day let's thank God for being our
Abba, Father, and for giving us his son, Jesus! Have a 'thanksgiving weekend'
enjoying your Abba! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: 12th Sunday: To be my disciple take up your cross and
follow me. 23-Jun-2013
Readings: Zach. 12: 10-11, 13: 1Gal. 3: 26-29Luke 9: 18-24

The first reading from the prophet Zechariah has this key line: 'They will look
upon the one whom they have pierced', whose meaning is not clear in the
original text. However, the early church understood this to be a prophecy of
the crowd gazing at the pierced Jesus on the cross, or of the godless who
realized their rejection of Jesus at the Last Judgement. We could understand
this text to mean that the Church is a people that walks in the footsteps of
the crucified Christ. The image of the pierced Christ is not one of defeat and
despair, but of hope since God vindicated Jesus and raised Him from the dead.

What do you know of Jesus?
A poor illiterate man wanted to be baptized. The parish priest asked him many
questions to see whether he was fit for baptism. Where was Jesus born? How
many apostles did he have? How many years did he live? Where did he die? The
poor man knew nothing of all these questions. Irritated, the priest then said,
At least you know prayers like the Our Father and the I Believe? The man
again shook his head. What do you know then? asked the priest flabbergasted.
The man explained, Before I met Jesus I was a drunkard who beat up my wife and
children; I lost my job and was wasting my life. Then he continued, But after
encountering Jesus, I've quit drinking. I work hard and have begun to love my
family. For me Jesus is my Saviour!
Francis Gonsalves in 'Sunday Seeds for Daily Deeds'

In today's gospel Jesus puts the key question to his disciples and to the
crowd:  Who do you say that I am? This is a question that Jesus asks of every
person. Christianity is not a religion of the book nor of the Law but of a
Person, God's son Jesus. Who was Jesus to the crowds that followed him? To some
he was a prophet, John the Baptist, or Elijah. Who is Jesus to me right now? To
people today Jesus might be a wonder-worker, a superstar, a superman, a
revolutionary, a rabble-rouser, a mystery! To Jesus' question about his own
identity, Peter's answer was: You are the Christ of God. This answer was
right not because Peter was clever or had studied the scriptures and figured it
out, or because of his superior intellect. Faith is not a matter of reasoning
or cleverness. Faith is a gift given from above. Peter gave the 'right answer'
to Jesus' question, but we must admit he hardly understood what he had said.
However, Peter had encountered Jesus and
heard him and seen him work and observed him at prayer. Peter could assert
that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah. Jesus spells out for Peter what being
Messiah meant: Christ must suffer grievously, be rejected by the elders, be
put to death, and be raised up on the last day. What is said about the Christ
is applicable to every Christian. A Christian is called to be another Christ.
Just as Jesus was the Christ, 'Anointed one', so Christians are meant to be the
'anointed ones.' We are anointed by the same spirit. Jesus spells out what
being a follower entails. If anyone wishes to be a follower of mine, let him
renounce himself, take up his cross every day and follow me. To be a Christian
is never a momentary experience, a once in a life time experience, but a daily
one. Jesus asks us to pick up our cross daily, not once in a way. Christianity
is not a religion which ends with the way of the cross but one which encounters
Jesus in every cross along
the way. We are called to walk with Jesus, the anointed one as pilgrims
towards God's promise of the resurrection.

Wanted: True Followers of Jesus Christ
Sir Ernest Shackleton needed 28 volunteers for a dangerous mission to the South
Pole. So he placed the following advertisement in the London Times: Wanted:
Persons for a dangerous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of
complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honour and
recognition if successful. Many sceptics were doubtful if he would get
volunteers. To their stunned disbelief, he was swamped by over 5000
applications from all over England. From these he selected 28 most eligible and
in spite of the anticipated hardships, all returned safely to honour and

iT IS AN BITTER EXPERIENCETHAT REMAINING POSITIVE is the most effectiveway

Her little DASH between birth and death. She lost her battle for survivor,

she was named as HOPE She lives today in the hearts and minds of people for

 I HAVE LEARNT IN LIFE;

A rabbit was enrolled with others. He obtained excellence in hoping natural

our weakness

A child abhorred all the variations in his meals by the expert cook
Exasperated the father bought ready to eat cereal pack, The child found it
most delicious because he cooked it by himself. Come easy go easy, We
appreciate hard victories won by our efforts

One cannot assure 100 runs in all outings. Winning and loss must be
accepted as it is cycle and nothing is permanent in life. Failures are
natural too. The lessons in both must be understood

Humility to value the contributions of every one, however small it may
seem. Short coming and gains must be accepted with a balanced view.
Ruminate, ponder over the good memories and take strength from past
experiences that are memorable in bad times

Strive for excellence by keenly observing others The inspiration must
spring from within involving the whole personality It must not be an act
but rather a habit. Reach must exceed grasp. Your only competition is
yourself.

Face the adversity squarely, when it strikes without a warning. The test of
fire is what makes steel. A child labouring for hours at an unsuccessful
jigsaw puzzle was advised by father to give up till next day. The response
of the child was that I have all the pieces, the task is only to put
them together Perseverance is the key to success.

Be open to all change, but do not compromise on values. Gandhi says that
the open window of our mind must not be swept with the breeze .Values like
honesty, humility, considerations, integrity define a person and not
achievements per se. Short cuts often lead to longest destinations.

Be convinced with your own ideas HOWEVER LUDICROUS and in spite of fierce
objections A polite vendor of newspaper had to endure arrogance and rude
manners of a customer, who refused to reciprocate his good morning His
attendant was aghast, shocked at his continuance with politeness His
answer was that the customer cannot help being rude but I care being
polite I cannot permit customer service to dictate my politeness response

[Goanet] Are We Indians? Stray Thoughts of a Toronto Goan by Roland Francis.

2013-06-16 Thread Eddie Fernandes
Source: Goan Voice UK Daily Newsletter 16 June 2013 at www.goanvoice.org.uk

To those who know we are Indians, my question seems quite innocuous, foolish
even. But to those who disagree, the thinking is: 451 years of foreign
occupation and conversion from Hindu to Christian must surely have removed
the Indian from us. Or, I have never been to India and/or have no affinity
with her. Or, I have never had an Indian passport. Accounting for shades of
gray, from quarters who while admitting they are Indians, are not fully
convinced of it, and the other section who while abhorring the Indian label,
will grudgingly admit to it especially at visa application or at property
selling time, the community has a clear fault line on whether we are Indian
or not.

Here is what one ex East Africa Toronto Goan says, Just like the
Malayalees, Bengalis, Punjabis, Gujaratis and others, Goans are simply a
unit of the whole India: Indian ethnicity and consanguinity remain
sacrosanct, whether professed or not. Because the British listed Goans as
separate from Indians and Pakistanis for census purposes in Africa and for
preference in government jobs in India, it did not endow us with any special
status. Taking it further he continues in no uncertain terms to state
Rather than dwell on fading historical imperatives, a contemporary
anthropologist would find interesting how Goans domiciled out of India, in
different parts of the world, have been shaped into a people somewhat bereft
of their moorings when it comes to co-mingling with their counterparts
(other Indians).

Is this bereft of moorings really responsible for our
inferiority/superiority complex. Did it cause us to isolate ourselves from
the wider Indian community in the west falsely thinking that in the first or
even second generation we have become a part of the mainstream because we
are Christian, westernized and worse still, can talk and write better
English than other minorities. Frankly no one cares.

Growing up in Bombay, I know the self-imposed isolationist feeing the
community possessed. We ate with spoon and forks while 'they' ate with
fingers. We danced to western tunes and played western instruments. They sat
on floors and played funny looking contraptions that produced funny music.
It finally took the westerner to discover that all this music was serious
stuff, on par with the best that Beethoven, Mozart, the Beatles and Tom
Jones could belt out. Other Indians called us paowalas (bread-makers)
which made us feel inferior but we continued with our pretend haughtiness
mistakenly concluding that somehow one or more of our ancestors must have
been Portuguese while 'they' were merely natives. Not too far a view from
that of Anglo Indians who were actually of mixed British-Indian pedigree.
Those were days that India was isolated from the world economy by choice.
Today India seems to have turned on its head. Yesterday's pandoos, a
derogatory term in Bombay for yokels, are now supplying services to
multi-national corporations based in Europe and North America and today's
country bumpkins from Gujarat and Bihar are sending their sons to study in
North America and Europe, paying tuition fees five times the going resident
rate. Their parents travel the world on a whim and Indian plastic, while
driving Mercedes, Lexus and BMWs in their bullock cart villages.

We see ourselves quite differently from how others see us. A non-Indian sees
us as Indians and respects what he sees. He sees a doctor, a software
genius, a shrewd businessman even when we are not those things. Why we
would not take advantage of that perception is anyone's guess. Another
Toronto Goan, also ex Africa writes: I was chatting with a white Canadian
teacher from one of our Mississauga public schools and she was quite
interested when I said I was Goan. She said Tell me one thing, why do Goan
children consider themselves different, I mean sort of superior to other
Indian children? In fact they resent being called Indian. They do not mix
with them. They insist on being called Goan. Can you explain why?

If we are to break into politics in a meaningful way, we must identify with
the Indian community. That is not a difficult task but not an option either.
They already see us as being a part of them, so all we need to do is play
that role. Another Toronto Goan also succinctly put it when he wrote We can
be full fledged Goans and full-fledged Indians while being full-fledged
Canadians. The trinity of heritage, motherland and nationality - a
trifecta that we could count on for the challenging Diaspora race.

Dear Augusto,
Apologize and move on. A genuine apology no matter what at this point--will
be worth the exercise.

It could be somewhat different if there is an OCI in the mix.

To you and others on Goanet:
Apologies in most cases are something very rare on Goanet. Humor is a
device that is hard to use, and most of us are too young at it, and rarely
have the chops. The same with argumentation. Of course on the other hand
aggravated responses are indeed very disconcerting, and seems to be getting
worse among us Christians. But perhaps it appears so since more often than
not (i believe so) we C/Xristanvs speak our minds out, so it appears,
unlike the other smart alecs.

Its often best to take a step back and I am not asking you to take a page
from any sutra, But speaking about self--it has helped.

Best.

A few thoughts to Gabe and all on Goanet:
Why do we find it hard no matter what to simply proffer the facts as in:
Hey Guy / Baba / ok: Shanya, I am a citizen of the UK (as the case may be
country), and by ours I meant myself and us Brits.

Considering the impression I have of many of you its always like I am doing
a second take. No one is asking for any of you to be weak, but still where
is all the culture, and allegria that is subtly and however inadvertently
alluded in our manners (acts, etc.) and processes, and to which we can now
hardly lay claim to? For my part its time I muzzled my expectations sooner
than the waiting for the year to end.

Best.

The enclosed news item was posted on this net.  I do not know anything about
the case, nor do I have any means to find out the merits of either side.
What has perturbed me in this article is the following sentence: “When
Cuncolim PI Raju Raut Dessai was contacted, the PI confirmed to have called
Fr Vaz after being requested by church authorities to to do so. The PI,
however, stated no FIR was filed against Fr Vaz.”

Are the police expected to follow such requests when no FIR has been filed?

I think this sets a very dangerous precedent.

Priest files for anticipatory bail (??)

June 15, 2013 - Herald?

MARGAO: The Chaplain of Infant Jesus Chapel, Murida-Cuncolim, Fr Saluzinho
Vaz, has moved the South Goa Sessions Court for anticipatory fearing arrest
by the Cuncolim police. The bail plea will come up for hearing before Judge
Vincent D?Silva on June 17.

The applicant has stated that Episcopal Vicar, acting on behalf of the
Archbishop, has allegedly lodged a complaint against him and alleged that he
was called by the Cuncolim police.

In his application, Fr Vaz said that by order dated May 4, he was relieved
from his duties in Murida and was asked to vacate the Chapel premises on
June 1. He has contended that Ecclesiastical authorities have no right to
simply relieve him without a suitable posting.

When Cuncolim PI Raju Raut Dessai was contacted, the PI confirmed to have
called Fr Vaz after being requested by church authorities to to do so. The
PI, however, stated no FIR was filed against Fr Vaz.

Extra:
Looks like the Chaplain was to leave the Chapel on 1st June and a new
Chaplain Fr. Santana Quadros was to take over.

How about this self-hating anti-Indian remark by Falcao?

Only Indians squat when dining that their foot reaches their mouth.

Good to see Gilbert back on Goanet.

In response to a very routine posting of a news item by Gabe Menezes, first
Augusto Pinto got all so needlessly worked up and now this mindless post from
 Gilbert Lawrence who asked:

So how are the racists in UK and in Canada, Australia and New Zealand
 taking this news?

GL replies:  Thanks for the welcome-back!
But to the topic at hand, are the Anglo-Indians across the world celebrating?
Not that they need a reason to celebrate.
But literary they will have one of their own in the Big Palace very soon.
They can now have the real big house for their reunions and parties.
If I were Prince Charles (which I'm not); I'd be cautions attending any
Anglo-Indian functions.:=))
Will Englebert Humperdink (Anglo-Indian) be lined up to sing at the celebration
of the birth of third-in-line?

From Gabe Menezes: Wherefore art thou O Gilbert! Welcome back

From Gabe Menezes: Our future King has Indian blood.

It has to be more than Blimey! :=))

RESPONSE: I do neither need an apology, nor expect one; things written in a
haste makes waste moment - one too many Kops?

Having said that, I am more than surprised that a practitioner of the
English Language and a Tutor of some repute (?) could have to badly
misconstrued what was written.

Someone's slip is showing(THAT'S NOT FAIR) Oh what the heck, in for the

If we have to spoon feed, then it would be taken that we are being, more
than patronising, for goodness sake, an upper supreme English Maestro,
should have read better?

1: how did Englebert become Anglo-Indian? Were any of his parents or their's
Not British British?

[Goanet] On Manohar Parrikar's memorandum for Special Status

2013-06-16 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

My first reaction: a day late and a dollar short. Goa's death warrant was
signed
in 1961 when it joined the Indian Union without any protections. Indians have
ruined every haven in the country. It is just that they got to Goa last.

That said, I applaud Manohar-bab for this effort, assuming it is sincere and
assuming
it will be pursued to the end. Many of the points made in the memo are strong
and
well crafted (I don't like the supplicating tone. Indians deserve no courtesy.
And
enough of these Indian uncles and behenjis in Goa. Find some other place to
muck up, fellas.)

The key question is: why is Manohar Parrikar winking at the megaprojects
ongoing RIGHT NOW?
It is in direct opposition to the words in his memo. Put another way,
Parrikar's words
DO NOT MATCH his actions. The Modys and other outsiders can come in here and
lord it over.

Another pertinent question: is this Special Status talk a smokescreen to
deflect attention
from Mopa and mollify opposition to the airport project?

Sorry to be cynical but the record thus far prompts such cynicism.

Hey Venny, goanet was getting a bit boring so I just thought of stirring
the pot a bit. It worked. ;-) The fact that some loonies can't tell sheet
from sat is not my fault. What say? Heh heh...

But as you say let me apologize:

Dear Gabe
I'm really sorry that I got on your nerves and made you get all worked up
and violent. Do accept my sincere apologies
Cheers

RESPONSE:
1 - Engelbert Humperdinck (born Arnold George Dorsey; 2 May 1936). Arnold
Dorsey was born in Madras, India, as one of ten children to British Army
NCO Mervyn Dorsey and his wife Olive. Dorsey's family moved to Leicester,
England, when he was ten. [1]

2 - The oft quoted on Goanet, Leo Lawrence, author of Nehru seizes Goa
comes to mind. He was no Anglo-Indian. For various reasons, Goans likely
anglicised their (sur)names:

Jose became Joseph
Catarina became Catherine
Jeronimo became Jerome
Julia became Juliet
Lourenco became Lawrence

Appropriate time for Emperor Augustus to chime-in.

[Goanet] In defense of Manohar Parrikar

2013-06-16 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
Not that he needs me to defend him.  But I count myself among his most ardent
supporters and want to say my piece.

I and a few others, notably my dear friend Dr. Anil Desai, have been strident
in
our criticism of Manohar-bab the past few months.  We had - still have - high
expectations of him, and we hold him to a much higher standard than any other
Goan politician, past and present.

Let us be absolutely clear about that: Manohar-bab is the only man right now
standing between Goa and disaster.  Can you imagine Goa in the hands of a
Vijai or a Viswajeet?  Hell would be a more pleasant alternative.

We recognize that the filthy sty left behind by the corrupt Congress criminals
cannot be cleaned in a few months or perhaps even in a couple of years.  We
also recognize that he has to shepherd his own flock and that is no easy task.
I mean, he has to deal with stinking gutterbugs like Fat Bastard Vishnu Wagh,
a dirty casteist s-o-b burdened with the lard of an elephant and the
intelligence
of a cockroach.

But we feel that Manohar-bab has as yet failed to hit the right notes.  We are
desperate for him to succeed for Goa's sake.  We are distressed that he saw it
fit to barrel ahead with Mopa, a project we are convinced will be to Goa's
detriment.
We are angry that he stands by mutely while the Mody and others erect huge
concrete megaprojects for the benefit of outsiders and choke our rivers with
their casino boats.   We want Manohar-bab to fulfill the promise that his
election
last year signaled and justify the faith the ordinary Goan reposed in him.

Manohar-bab's true enemies are not us, his harshest, but well-meaning, critics.

Manohar-bab's true enemies are the sycophants who have surrounded him and
who uncritically sing his bhajans here on Facebook and elsewhere. What
Manohar-bab needs - and deserves - is honest appraisal.

If one meant huttu tu tu and as far as I am aware--its is a call given in
Kabbadi by the player who has entered into the opponent's space; its not
another game besides Kabaddi.

Some other interesting games are Atyapatya, Ligouri, gilli dandu, and the
one where a spike was pierced into the earth after the rains (were big at
BPT, Antop Hill, Wadala). Even more interesting ones were/are lezim
(martial maneuvers to aid in swordmanship), malkhamb, khokho...

Gen FYI: My mother Otilia's cousin Esmero Figueiredo (Go Batim) was an
International in Basketball for India. He was earlier coach of OL of Good
Counsel, Sion. At NNH they gave him a Muslim name/ muslim sounding ?
Esmith.

Perhaps, after all the scandal in Cricket, it is better to focus on sports
like Kabbadi, Hutuu, Basketball and Table Tennis.
