Common sense and Hindu nationalism
Why the Catholics in Goa are not Hindu:
Albertina Almeida Others
SEPTEMBER 16, 2013

This Guest Post by ALBERTINA ALMEIDA, AMITA KANEKAR, DALE
LUIS MENEZES, JASON KEITH FERNANDES AND R. BENEDITO FERRaO
is a response to a statement by Chief Minister of Goa,
Manohar Parrikar.

[Kafila.org]

Can a Goan Catholic be Hindu?
Can Catholics professing a
tradition of Catholicism that
is over five centuries old be
considered Hindu in culture?
This is what the Chief Minister
of Goa, Manohar Parrikar,
sought to suggest in a recent
interview with Sambuddha Mitra
Mustafi of the New York Times
India blog India Ink, where he
said:

I am a perfect Hindu, but that is my personal faith, it has
nothing to do with government. India is a Hindu nation in
the cultural sense. A Catholic in Goa is also Hindu
culturally, because his practices don't match with Catholics
in Brazil [a former Portuguese outpost like Goa]; except in
the religious aspect, a Goan Catholic's way of thinking and
practice matches a Hindu's. So Hindu for me is not a
religious term, it is cultural. I am not the Hindu
nationalist as understood by some TV media -- not one who
will take out a sword and kill a Muslim. According to me
that is not Hindu behavior at all. Hindus don't attack
anyone, they only do so for self-defense -- that is our
history. But in the right sense of the term, I am a Hindu
nationalist.

Parrikar's bizarre statement was in response to the
question of whether he saw himself as a Hindu
nationalist. Of course, a quick and easy response
to his statement would be to summarily dismiss it
as expected rhetoric flowing from his saffron
affiliations; yet, questions persist, not least
because of the peculiar and oft-misrepresented Goan
  scenario.

More than meets the eye

Goan Catholics today find themselves in a strange situation.

On the one hand they are summoned to maintain a distinct Goan
identity which rests in large part on the Portuguese past of
the territory. This distinct identity is called upon not
merely by an officially approved tourism policy and practice,
but also by local elites who use the claim of a distinct
identity to cyclically generate local mass movements that
help them maintain their dominance.

On the other hand, as Victor Ferrao argues in his
recent book *Being a Goan Christian: The Politics
of Identity, Rift and Synthesis* (2011), there is a
  simultaneous suggestion that this Catholic
'cultural' element is not compatible with a Goan
and Indian identity; this is precisely what
Parrikar is proposing here. What he further does
is to paint the community as a monolithic entity,
despite a situation where large segments of the
Catholics are being delegitimized by dominant-caste
members of their own faith who participate in a
Hindu nationalist reading of Goan history.
Parrikar's statement also distorts history through
a saffron lens, contributing to the further
marginalization of not only Goan Catholics, but
also Goan Muslims, Dalits, and Adivasis.

Finally, when Parrikar says that his Hindu faith has nothing
to do with governance, he is cleverly skirting the intimate
connection that religion and caste ideologies, including the
right-wing one he professes, have with state apparatuses in
post-1947 India. In the political mobilizations of the
dominant as well as the subaltern sections in India, religion
has emerged as a potent and important factor. Our
contention, not necessarily a new one, is this: that religion
in post-1947 India is not a personal affair; it is deeply
public and profoundly political, and has now become even more
overtly so with the rise of the BJP.

Goa's encounter with Christianity

This background of political machinations and mobilizations
makes it even more necessary to unpack Parrikar's statement
against the actual historical context in which Goa and Goans
encountered Christianity.

As has been pointed out by the historian R. E.
Frykenberg in his book *Christianity in India: From
the Beginning to the Present* (2008), despite
appearances to the contrary, the transmission of
Christianity from the proselytizer to the converted
always involved shifts in practice. These shifts
resulted in new and unique forms of Catholicism or
Christianity as the converted took in the message
of the faith and made it their own.

Thus, when Parrikar views a Goan Catholic as different from
Catholics in Brazil, he is right only to the extent that
there would be some ethno-local differences, because the
local culture of Goan Catholics is Goan culture in its
multiple variations, including, but not limited to, Hindu
culture. Further, just as there are many shades in

2013-09-16 Thread Camillo Fernandes
Seb, you have a point. Being a resident in Dubai you are the best person to
know the reality. I agree with you that even in London the posh places of
tourist interest are awesome and very clean viz. Buckingham palace, London
bridge, etc. while places inhabitated by immigrants like Southall etc. are
just like being in some of the filthy places in Mumbai and not better places
like Nariman Point, Churchgate, Ballard Estate etc.

However the fact cannot be denied that the same Indians abroad and back home
are a different breed altogether. At home they would consider their right to
dispose garbage/litter and just piss and shit wherever they feel like.

I feel as a first step there there should be more importance to cleanliness
and education given in schools and publicity in general given to it so that
with awareness a small beginning in whatever way could be made by all.

Tale care. You too have a nice week.

[Goanet] Praise for Manohar Parrikar.

2013-09-16 Thread U. G. Barad

Earlier, there was a reference to the following article on this discussion
group:
http://india.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/09/04/a-conversation-with-goa-chief-mini
ster-manohar-parrikar/

In it, the interviewer Sambuddha Mitra Mustafi, said the following in the
introduction: “The B.J.P.’s de-facto prime ministerial candidate Narendra
Modi is controversial and unacceptable to many of India’s regional parties,
whose support will be crucial to the B.J.P. in forming the next government.
Even within the B.J.P. several leaders have been harboring the ambition to
replace Mr. Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate. Among them is
Manohar Parrikar, the B.J.P. chief minister of the coastal state of Goa.
Mr. Parrikar is an affable face of the Hindu right and leader of India’s
most prosperous state by per capita income, which is also home to an
influential Catholic minority and their distinct history.”

This is quite a generous praise of our very own Manohar-bab.  The
interviewer has followed it up with an article in The Economic Times, which
is at:
http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2013-09-10/news/41937955_1_goa-
cm-manohar-parrikar-bjp-care

In this article, the praise is even more profuse.  Let me give some
extensive quotes from the article:

QUOTE

As it dawns on the media that a Modi-less BJP-led government is an eminently
possible outcome of the 2014 elections, naturally the focus will shift to a
suitable BJP replacement. In Manohar Parrikar, the party may have the ace of
spades: but have they even noticed it?

Parrikar's great asset is that he broadens the BJP's voter range. Writer
Shobha De, by no means a natural votary of the Hindu right, urged the BJP to
nominate Parrikar as their prime ministerial candidate. It will find
countless takers across India, she tweeted, He's 57. Global. Smart.

Why should the BJP care for De's opinion? Because democratic politics is the
art of persuasion, not of anger and revisionism, as most Modi fans think it
is. It's also maths: every persuaded swing voter counts for two votes
(Congress loses one, BJP gains one). That the proud RSS man Parrikar appeals
to India's biggest vote bank — liberal Hindus — also makes him a potential
successor to AB Vajpayee's legacy (though Parrikar demurs at the
comparison). Since Vajpayee in 1999, the BJP has struggled to get support
from these crucial voters, who also make up a large section of the
intelligentsia.
..
His biggest achievement has been rescuing Goa's economy from a potentially
crippling crisis: the Supreme Court's mining ban last year has hit a quarter
of the state's revenues and population.
..
That BJP cadres worship the polariser Modi over the persuader Parrikar,
shows how the Hindu nationalists are still struggling to evolve as a 21st
century conservative party.
...
If the medieval ruler of Hindu hearts is replaced by a modern leader of
Indian conservatives to form a government in 2014, that can only be good for
the evolution of the BJP and the conservative movement in India. It will
also be in the national interest.

UNQUOTE

The tweet by Shobha De is VERY interesting.  So, in our very own chief
minister destined for higher things?

But then that will depend on how much of the assessment made by Sambuddha is
correct?  Going by various statements of various political and economic
analysts in Goa, and what some on this discussion group have written, it
would seem to me that the assessment is not fully to the mark!

I also read somewhere that Sambuddha has made Goa his home!  And in New York
Times article, he is said to be a media entrepreneur and freelance
journalist!!

There are some people on this discussion group who are in a similar
profession like Sambuddha. Saying so I am thinking in particular of Fredrick
Noronha and Mayabhushan Nagvenkar.  Perhaps they can enlighten us more about
Sambuddha and his source of information.

[Goanet] Featured this week: New Single “Waiting For The Day” By Jazz Vocalist Carolyn Leonhart.

2013-09-16 Thread THE JAZZ NETWORK WORLDWIDE A GREAT PLACE TO HANG
(http://www.waitingfortheday.us)

Featured this week On The Jazz Network Worldwide: New Single “Waiting For The
Day” By Jazz Vocalist Carolyn Leonhart.

(http://www.waitingfortheday.us)Barry Strutt and Clyde Bullard of the band
Mystic Merlin from back in the ‘80‘s are making a big splash in the recording
world with a new single for jazz singer Carolyn Leonhart. On the Strutt-penned
“Waiting for the Day” Leonhart walks on the track with her original vocal style
of grace embroidered with the tapestry of the Quiet Storm.

In today’s climate of opinion, a song with a theme of hope is one that many
would give a solid nod. Like a soldier on his watch, waiting for the day,
half-asleep and half-awake, the day when there might be no more use for him to
be on a “war watch.”

(http://www.waitingfortheday.us)Composer Barry Strutt’s thought was to pen a
song describing the feeling of being half-asleep, half-awake—hope but not naïve
hope.  A world aligned in peace is unlikely, it might not ever come, but we can
wait, dream and hope it will come to pass. The good thing about the song is
that its lyrics are applicable to any situation.

(http://www.waitingfortheday.us)Carolyn Leonhart, daughter of jazz bassist Jay
Leonhart and sister of the trumpeter Michael Leonhart, is perhaps best known as
a jazz singer, but is equally at home singing RB, Soul, and Funk. She has
performed as a back-up vocalist for Steely Dan on several tours and recordings.
On ‘Waiting for the Day’ she is smooth, vulnerable and achingly soulful, cooing
as if she’s sending a love letter via Western Union giving a masterful
performance.

(http://www.waitingfortheday.us)The video produced by Helen LaLousis and Barry
R. Strutt has brilliant hues, dreamy imagery and romantic undertones that
decorate the landscape as the backdrop to the somewhat elliptical and haunting
lyrics. The theme hints on the issues of what fatigued spouses have to endure
while waiting for their military-working mates to come home. “Half asleep, half
awake/waiting for the day,” guiding the viewer through the dreamscape of the
little girl capturing her past, waiting for her childhood crush to comeback
from the war.

“Barry Strutt’s latest music video, “Waiting for the Day,” is a triumph. The
song and lyrics are haunting and timely, and powerfully convey a universal
message of hope and loss. Carolyn Leonhart delivers a stirring performance, her
voice and natural beauty always a joy to behold.” by Randy Sandke (Author of
Harmony for the New Millenium)

“The goal of this tune is to get it to the ears of Jill Biden so that it can be
filtered into the work she does with military families as well as garner
attention from NARAS for a nomination for a Grammy” says Strutt.

The Jazz Network Worldwide is happy to feature a song that captures the
sacrifice, courage and dedication of the military families that allows us our
freedom, it gives us the insight as to the hope for peace and a safe journey
home” says Jaijai Jackson, creator of The Jazz Network Worldwide.

held in Congress House, Panaji***

* *

* *

* *Mr Shantaram Naik M.P. said that his Private Members
resolution is a beginning and not end of his demand to achieve the demand
of Special Provisions made which he is trying to seek for Goa.

Briefing the media Mr Naik said that he was surprised to learn
about the criticism made against him by very persons who once appreciated
his efforts and he even took the trouble of attending one of their
meetings to explain the meaning and implications of special provision
popularly called 'special status'

During the days fixed for Private Members business, a member can
either give a notice of Private Member's Bill or of a Private Member's
Resolution but, it is only those, whose name comes in lot are those who get
the opportunity of getting a bill or resolution ,as the case may be,
discussed.

If an MP gets such an opportunity even once during his entire term
,he should be considered lucky.

Mr Naik said he had been giving notices of bills and also
resolutions from time to time on the subject and, to his luck on 30
thAugust, 2013 his resolution secured number one in the ballot and
,luckily, House was running that day.

Mr Naik said that such resolutions are meant to bring about a
discussion on the subject, which happened.

Mr Naik said no one expects the House to pass such resolutions,
and, that too , a Private Member's resolution suggesting a Constitutional
amendment. They are to be withdrawn as per Parliamentary convention ; even
members of opposition parties do it, Mr Naik added.

If the subject matter of a bill or resolution is one which can be easily
fulfilled , government gives assurance to that effect but irrespective of
assurances bills/resolutions are withdrawn.

If those interested in getting special provisions for Goa had
understood the procedural aspect and limited scope of private members
business, He would not have been misunderstood, Mr Naik said.

As to why BJP members in the Rajya Sabha did not participate in the
debate despite the fact that List of Business was sent to the houses of MPs
in the morning as per practice, and, despite the fact that the same was
available on the net previous day, only BJP can answer, Mr Naik said.

If somebody expected that he should have gone begging with BJP MPs
to speak, that would be too much to expect from him, Mr Naik said.

*WHAT IS 'SPECIAL STATUS' ?***

Let me make it clear , at the outset, that there is nothing called 'special
status ' in the constitution of India. There is article 371, under which,
special provisions can be made with respect to a State or States. Since
every one has been referring to non existence status of special status, he
had to fall in line, Mr Naik said.

He has now developed a new expression, Special provisions under article
371 of the constitution popularly called as special status, Mr Naik added.

He has been demanding special provisions for Goa for the last more
than three years. I submitted my Memorandum to PM in 2010 but a case has to
be built up by State Government, Mr Naik said.

He has been contending that Land is becoming a scarce commodity more
particularly in smaller States. Land mafia from foreign countries are
landing in States like Goa with tons of money buying huge areas creating
social and economic chaos. Some of the parties are potential enough to buy
a whole village in a smaller State like Goa.

Persons in real estate in the country too, are resorting to similar
purchases disturbing the social fabric in the State.

States have to be empowered to enact appropriate legislations to bring in
restrictions on transfer of land and other immoveable properties on
grounds of duration of residential requirement in the State, social and
economic needs of the State, environment and public interest, as may be
specified by the law.

Similarly, the State of Goa consist of hardly 3,702 sq meters of land with
a population of roughly 14 lakhs, increasing number of migrant population
has reached to an unmanageable proportions. While it is the fundamental
right of every citizen under Article 19 of the Constitution to move freely
throughout the territory of India , it is also the fundamental right of
others to live a decent life with basic amenities provided by the State.
In order to safeguard the basic rights of those Goans as also non-Goans
who are settled in Goa for a number of years, further inflow has to be
regulated to avoid a virtual stampede in near future, Mr Naik said.

Re: [Goanet] Syria crisis: US welcomes 'significant' Russian proposal on chemical weapons

2013-09-16 Thread Jim Fernandes
Mervyn,

You sound like the US is about to go around with a begging bowl for alms.

If the country is about to go bust, please explain why millions of people from
around the world would want to drop everything behind at the blink of any eye,
just to get a foot in the door to America.

Every year, the US takes in 65,000 people on H-1B work visa's alone. This year,
they are expected to take in 85,000 (the extra 20K claim to be under non H1-cap
situations). Are these people coming into the US because there are no jobs?

Demand to get a job in the US is so high, that this year alone, the US received
double the number of 65K annual quote for H1-B visas - which means these
foreigners are going to be subjected to the lottery system!

In the meantime, please enjoy your near-free vacation in the remote rat hole
you happened to be in!

Jim F
New York.

Note: I don't want to deviate from the subject line - the fact of the matter is
that the US is the only country in the world that has balls to do something
worthwhile. But they will do so, only if there is American skin in the game. In
the Syrian crises, I see three main reasons for Obama to get involved:
1. He wants a back door entry to attack Iran's nuclear plants
2. Israel is next door and the US would not want their friend to get hurt if
these chemicals get into wrong hands.
3. It makes reasonably good PR to go after a dictator who kills his own using
banned weapons of mass destruction.

Jim F,
I am in one of the remote parts of the US where I can only get an internet
connection for a few minutes a day. A few years ago, I had to book way in
advance to get to this area. Today, business is so bad that they offer
off-season rates during peak season. The locals have no money and are hurting.

Their government, however, behaves as though they have money to waste. Taxes
are er, blown up in the Middle East. To make this even more bitter, the US
borrows money from the Chinese to make ends meet. In a short time (had I the
internet I would have provided the exact year) the interest the US pays to
service its debt will be more than the amount it currently spends on its
military adventures.

Until that happens, have fun being Mr Nice Guy to all Goans and Indians. I am
glad there are people who benefit from the taxes trusted on US citizens.

[Goanet] History of Bandra

2013-09-16 Thread eric pinto
Pre-script: Portgal had gifted Bandra to a soldier, Homem.
He had agreed to manage of battery of cannons to defend against
Omani pirates. Homem in turn willed the town to the Carmelites
who used all revenues to support St. Paul's College in Old Goa.

---
Subject   :   History of Bandra

*History of Bandra*

Bandra was a tiny fishing village inhabited farmers and fishermen. It was
acquired by the British East India Company while the rest of Bombay belonged
to the Portuguese. There was an 18 hole golf course in Bandra called Danda
Green with an English style Club House on the top of the hill, surrounded by
trees.
Membership was only for the British who lived in Pali Hill.. Each cottage had
a stable for horses.

Bandra consisted of the villages Sherly, Malla, Rajan, Kantwady,
Waroda,Ranwar, Boran, Pali and Chuim. Ranwar also had a tennis court and the
famous Ranwar Club famous for its Christmas and New Year eve dances. Most
adults in Bandra worked for the East India Company... and hence were called
East Indians.

In the Bandra of the forties and earlier, large cottages with large gardens
were available for rent at Rs 30 a month. Marriages were celebrated for 8 days
from Thursday to Thursday for a Sunday wedding and the whole village was
invited. Thursday was pig slaughter day and Friday was to make pappads for
drinks, Saturday to make fugias and bring water from the village well to bathe
the bride or groom. Sunday was the wedding ceremony and long reception..
Monday was day of rest and to finish remaining food and on Tuesday the feet of
guests were washed in exchange for cash. Then farewell dinner on Wed and
guests left on Thursday by which time honeymoon was over.

Tradition has it that the suburb was originally known as Vandra or Ape as it
was the home of monkeys, then Bandor as the Portuguese called it in 1505, then
called Bandera, Bandura, Bandore, Pandara, Bandorah, Bandara and finally
Bandra till a railway sign board finalized it at the end of the last century.
Salsette was originally separated by a tidal creek which Portuguese called
Bandora creek. English changed it to Mahim creek. Bandra had 2 hills, Mount
Mary hill and Pali hill. On 12th Apr 1867 the first railway service was
inaugurated with one train per day between Virar and Bombay.

Bandra at one time was peopled mainly by East Indians (original residents of
Bombay Salsette, Bassein, and Thana), a few Goans and Manglorian immigrants,
Parsis, Muslims, Europeans and Hindu Kolis. Till as late as the 30's Bandra
had only one bus service from Pali Naka, Hill road to the Rly station. Other
people just walked to the nearest Rly station.
After World War II the building boom started to accommodate immigrants.

The five oldest roads in Bandra are as follows: Godbunder Road, which
originally ran from Mahim causeway, then skirted Bazaar Road, went past the
Bandra talab (lake) and continued to Godbunder. The Road was later made
straight by cutting through the talab. Bazaar Road began at Godbunder Road
opposite the mosque and ran through the market keeping close to the coast
which is now the reclamation. Hill Road starting from the station went through
middle of Bandra town, past St. Andrews to terminate at the foot of the Mount
near Mehboob studio.

Pali Road began at St. Peter's and cut through Pali village till it reached
Danda. BJ Road runs from St. Andrews to Lands End, was built by Byramjee
Jeejeebhoy and opened to public in 1878.

There are over 150 crosses at various places. Many crosses were built to ward
off the plague epidemic (1896-1906). The oldest is the one relocated in St.
Andrew's church compound. Stands 17ft high and made of a single stone. It was
originally in the Jesuit seminary of St Anne built in 1610.

The bldg was destroyed in 1739 and the cross was relocated to St. Andrew's
church. The surface is carved all over with 39 emblems of the passion of
Christ. Bazaar Road is only 2 km long but houses a Jain temple, Ram Mandir,
Hanuman temple, Khoja mosque, Christian chapel and a Sikh gurduwara.

Main roads in Bandra, Perry, Carter, Bullock, Kane, and Bates were named after
British collectors and magistrates. Mr. Carter was collector in 1924 and Mr.
Bullock was the Chief Magistrate.

Christians in Bandra are mostly of the Koli, Bhandari and Kunbi castes. The
architect of Mount Mary's church was a Bombay architect Shahpoorjee
Chandabhoy. The basilica was built in 1904 at a cost of 1 lakh. Also the first
time a non-Catholic was asked to build the church. It was built to serve the
garrison posted at Castella de Aguada - the fort at Land's End road. It was
destroyed in a fire in 1739 and rebuilt in 1761, the year marking beginning of
Bandra feast as it is celebrated today.

The walls enclosing the compound of St. Andrew's church were built by a Parsi,
Manockjee Sorabjee Ashburner in 1862. It is

The first woman of Indian descent to be crowned Miss America has become the
victim of intense racist abuse on Twitter.

Users of the social networking site accused Nina Davuluri of being an
“Arab” and “terrorist” and told her to get out of the country — despite the
fact she was born in the US.

Miss Davuluri, 24, said she intended to ignore the attacks, saying: “I have
to rise above that. I’ve always viewed myself as first and foremost
American.”

She was born in Syracuse, New York, after her parents moved to the US from
the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in 1981. She was crowned Miss New York
before taking the US crown.

But within hours of her victory she was being targeted by Twitter users who
accused her of not being American.

One said: “I’m literally soo mad right now an Arab won” while another
posted: “How the does a foreigner win Miss America? She is a Arab!” A
third user said: “Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America” and
another added: “It’s called Miss America, Get outta here New York you look

Miss Davuluri’s father is a doctor and she intends to use her prize money
from the competition to study at medical school in the US.

The Miss America competition had been praised this year for celebrating
diversity, with contestants including an Army officer with tattoos and a
woman missing the lower part of one arm.

At a press conference, the new Miss America said: “I’m so happy that this
organisation has embraced diversity.

“I am thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate

She performed a Bollywood style dance as part of the talent segment of the
contest, held in Atlantic City, and said she wanted to use her role to
“celebrate diversity through cultural competency”.

[Goanet] Let’s march to destroy blackmailing through Aadhaar card

2013-09-16 Thread Sebastian Rodrigues
http://www.bharatmukti.blogspot.in/2013/09/lets-march-to-destroy-blackmailing_3547.html

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is going against Parliament.
The law (National Identification Authority Bill) for Aadhaar card is not passed
in the Parliament and he being the Prime Minister of India is dictating terms
against the Parliament of India. Aadhaar card is totally and completely illegal
and people are made slaves in doing the Aadhaar Card. As a Prime Minister he
has to work for the good of the people. Parliamentary standing committee on
finance in fact has recommended the scrapping of the Aadhaar card project
citing the reason of absence of direction and clarity of the project, waste of
public resources and grave threat to national security.

Cylinders should be sold at the rate of Rs. 435/- as it was
sold before and the public at large should not be troubled by the Prime
Minister the way he is doing so. Aadhaar cards must be scrapped completely and
totally giving due respect to the Parliament of India.

How can Prime Minister legitimize Aadhaar cards as he has
done in his press release of September 2nd 2013. The web link of the
Prime Minister’s press release is as follows:

http://pmindia.nic.in/content_print.php?nodeid=1685nodetype=1

As a member of the house who earns about a Rs.4,000/- per
month wherein he has to support his wife and children plus pay the electricity
bill, telephone bill, water bill; how much money will he have left with him
after all these payments? Plus he has to pay Rs.950/- for the gas cylinder.
This is only going to chock up his throat and give him sleepless nights
endlessly. It is disgusting and highly miserable act of Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh even to think on such a misery by going against the Parliament of India.
Such people are showing their true selves that they are really pursuing the
agenda of the Eurasians Bamons who don’t care about the mulnivasis.

Goa Chief Minister Bamon Manohar Parrikar made Rs.10/- less
on Petrol after coming to Power as per promise in his manifesto in 2012.
Immediately after that his government completely stopped Kerosene available at
the fair price shop through the ration card and mulnivasis at large are
suffering today as Kerosene is stopped by Parrikar.

The house maids, the sweepers, the peons, private sector
working people are suffering tremendously on account of the Chief Minister
bamon Parrikar and the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. With all this suffering
in mind they also have to cater to their children’s education and future. This
is only strangling and suffocating what this Bamon Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar is doing to Goa.  Only MLA’s and
Ministers and Chief Minister and Prime Minister can afford to in this high cost
life style. Others will have to struggle. The MLAs are paid Rs. One lakh five
thousand monthly, MPs, Ministers, Prime Minister are getting even more.

Bharat Mukti Morcha condemns Bamon Manohar Parrikar and the
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for going against the Parliament of India.
Scrapping of Aadhaar card pamphlets are distributed in all the 12 talukas of
Goa. Total awareness is made about Aadhaar card scandal in all 12 talukas of
Goa.

[Goanet] NARENDRA MODI: A RECIPE FOR DISASTER

2013-09-16 Thread Aires Rodrigues
L.K.Advani was very right in flagging the red card to Narendra Modi leading
the BJP at the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The people of India will never
accept Narendra Modi due to his Gujarat carnage taint, for which no
sensible Indian would also ever forgive him.

Narendra Modi’s hindtuva agenda and his fanatic dream of making India a
Hindu nation is out of place. Having all traits of spreading the communal
venom he would definitely not be acceptable across the country. Today our
Hindu brethren have a broader outlook and would definitely at all cost
strive to maintain our country secular. The recent revelations of DIG
Vanzara are some of the hidden methods by which the Modi administration is
maladministered. Can India afford such kind of administration?

Power in the hands of the wrong people can be disastrous. Over the last 18
months we have been witness to the total reckless abuse of that power and
authority by Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who has a lot in common
with Narendra Modi. They are both a one man show. A lot of hollow talk and
no substance. Both have publicly declared that they are Hindu nationalists.
No doubt they have now ganged together. In Goa we were promised a
Parivartan. Rampant corruption and maladministration beefed with a vicious
communal agenda has been there for all to see. We cannot afford another
experiment which will take India the Goa way.

The current wave of Opposition to Narendra Modi is obvious. Even some of
the NDA partners themselves have put their foot down while opposing him
tooth and nail. Courtesy Narendra Modi the BJP will see the Lotus wilt to
the hilt. It will be a NO to Modi and a YES for a very secular India.

[Goanet] DEBATE: Common sense and Hindu nationalism (Albertina Almeida Others kafila.org)

2013-09-16 Thread Goanet Reader
Common sense and Hindu nationalism
Why the Catholics in Goa are not Hindu:
Albertina Almeida Others
SEPTEMBER 16, 2013

This Guest Post by ALBERTINA ALMEIDA, AMITA KANEKAR, DALE
LUIS MENEZES, JASON KEITH FERNANDES AND R. BENEDITO FERRaO
is a response to a statement by Chief Minister of Goa,
Manohar Parrikar.

[Kafila.org]

Can a Goan Catholic be Hindu?
Can Catholics professing a
tradition of Catholicism that
is over five centuries old be
considered Hindu in culture?
This is what the Chief Minister
of Goa, Manohar Parrikar,
sought to suggest in a recent
interview with Sambuddha Mitra
Mustafi of the New York Times
India blog India Ink, where he
said:

I am a perfect Hindu, but that is my personal faith, it has
nothing to do with government. India is a Hindu nation in
the cultural sense. A Catholic in Goa is also Hindu
culturally, because his practices don't match with Catholics
in Brazil [a former Portuguese outpost like Goa]; except in
the religious aspect, a Goan Catholic's way of thinking and
practice matches a Hindu's. So Hindu for me is not a
religious term, it is cultural. I am not the Hindu
nationalist as understood by some TV media -- not one who
will take out a sword and kill a Muslim. According to me
that is not Hindu behavior at all. Hindus don't attack
anyone, they only do so for self-defense -- that is our
history. But in the right sense of the term, I am a Hindu
nationalist.

Parrikar's bizarre statement was in response to the
question of whether he saw himself as a Hindu
nationalist. Of course, a quick and easy response
to his statement would be to summarily dismiss it
as expected rhetoric flowing from his saffron
affiliations; yet, questions persist, not least
because of the peculiar and oft-misrepresented Goan
  scenario.

More than meets the eye

Goan Catholics today find themselves in a strange situation.

On the one hand they are summoned to maintain a distinct Goan
identity which rests in large part on the Portuguese past of
the territory. This distinct identity is called upon not
merely by an officially approved tourism policy and practice,
but also by local elites who use the claim of a distinct
identity to cyclically generate local mass movements that
help them maintain their dominance.

On the other hand, as Victor Ferrao argues in his
recent book *Being a Goan Christian: The Politics
of Identity, Rift and Synthesis* (2011), there is a
  simultaneous suggestion that this Catholic
'cultural' element is not compatible with a Goan
and Indian identity; this is precisely what
Parrikar is proposing here. What he further does
is to paint the community as a monolithic entity,
despite a situation where large segments of the
Catholics are being delegitimized by dominant-caste
members of their own faith who participate in a
Hindu nationalist reading of Goan history.
Parrikar's statement also distorts history through
a saffron lens, contributing to the further
marginalization of not only Goan Catholics, but
also Goan Muslims, Dalits, and Adivasis.

Finally, when Parrikar says that his Hindu faith has nothing
to do with governance, he is cleverly skirting the intimate
connection that religion and caste ideologies, including the
right-wing one he professes, have with state apparatuses in
post-1947 India. In the political mobilizations of the
dominant as well as the subaltern sections in India, religion
has emerged as a potent and important factor. Our
contention, not necessarily a new one, is this: that religion
in post-1947 India is not a personal affair; it is deeply
public and profoundly political, and has now become even more
overtly so with the rise of the BJP.

Goa's encounter with Christianity

This background of political machinations and mobilizations
makes it even more necessary to unpack Parrikar's statement
against the actual historical context in which Goa and Goans
encountered Christianity.

As has been pointed out by the historian R. E.
Frykenberg in his book *Christianity in India: From
the Beginning to the Present* (2008), despite
appearances to the contrary, the transmission of
Christianity from the proselytizer to the converted
always involved shifts in practice. These shifts
resulted in new and unique forms of Catholicism or
Christianity as the converted took in the message
of the faith and made it their own.

Thus, when Parrikar views a Goan Catholic as different from
Catholics in Brazil, he is right only to the extent that
there would be some ethno-local differences, because the
local culture of Goan Catholics is Goan culture in its
multiple variations, including, but not limited to, Hindu
culture. Further, just as there are many shades in

- B,
I am glad you agree.
Ever so often someone on GOAnet shouts, USA! USA! USA! and ends the sentence
with we have the power to vaporize you.

Any opinion different from the shouter starts a downward spiral where the
winner is the first person to hurl abuse. It makes him feel good. I like to
gently point out that the taxes I pay provides for one of the best health care
systems in the world. I feel the power of my taxes when I see a sick person
walk out of a hospital, healthy.

Others feel more powerful when they put people into hospital, or for ease, just
vaporize them. The accuser, the judge, the jury AND the executioner, all rolled
into one person.
