[Goanet] IS HE GOA’S ASARAM BAPU?
In this month’s edition of the magazine VIVA GOA the flamboyant Advocate General of Goa AtmaramNadkarni who poses to have an abiding interest in spirituality has in his column entitled What is the Purpose of Life made certain observations leaving one to guess whether he ever practices what he preaches. Atmaram Nadkarni begins his two paged article saying “While God is in absolute control of the Universe, prayer and good deeds help us shape our own destiny in our search for salvation”. After a long rambling on the Vedas, Atmaram Nadkarni goes on to further preach saying “Take for example the Biblical Commandments wherein the Lord has set for everyone the Ten Commandments. If everyone followed these Ten Commandments, the world would certainly be a nicer place to live in. Herein, God believes that just the Ten Commandments are good enough; but our governments believe in making tens of thousands of law; yet these very same laws are openly flouted and violated causing injustice to some and abuse by others.” Atmaram Nadkarni concludes his column claiming that “Every person born in this Universe has a destiny, a choice that is his own, to attain Moksaa or to come back in another form due to his actions and reactions which follow those actions”. After reading the article one fails to understand whether the Advocate General realizes the need in life to Walk the Talk. At over eight lakhs a month he is India’s highest paid public functionary pocketing over five times the salary of the President of India. How does this self ordained spiritual Guru justify this? He is no Asaram Bapu. About Atmaram Nadkarni’s conduct inside and outside the Court less said the better. From the Mining, Casino, to the builder lobby he has got his fertile eggs well stacked and hatched in all the baskets. While justifying the further hike in the Advocate General’s fees last year, the Chief Minister Mr. Manohar Parrikar had claimed that the Advocate General was facing very high inflation. May be my friend Manohar Parrikar was right because the grapevine reveals that on his trips to Delhi the Advocate General takes along bags loaded with his soiled clothes, so that they are washed, starched and pressed for free. What a free loader. We need to pray that Atmaram Nadkarni be bestowed the strength to stop mocking the Gods and realize that actions speak louder than words. That the Temples of Justice never end up as dens of chicanery and jugglery. We know from the Biblical saying that Jesus had warned that even the devil could quote the Bible! Rings true even centuries down the line. Aires Rodrigues T1 - B30, Ribandar Retreat Ribandar - Goa - 403006 Mobile: 9822684372
[Goanet] Sunday Column: The Goan Problem: Who Am I? A young perspective by Richard de Souza
Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter 29 Sep 2013 at www.goanvoice.org.uk By Richard de Souza In July this year I attended the last day of the 'Oral Histories of British-Goans' exhibition at the Nehru Centre, London. Expecting to spend a few minutes browsing through the exhibition, I found myself devoting an entire morning to it, witnessing an exchange of personal expressions of what it means to be Goan between the older generation, who migrated from British East Africa, and the younger born-and-bred UK generation. On this last day, many visitors had turned up hoping to catch a glimpse of this unique opportunity and consequently Eddie Fernandes took a group photo (http://bit.ly/16TzmcU ) and led a discussion so those present could ask the questions that the exhibition had evoked. The exhibition, preserving the story of East African Goans who settled in Britain, raised questions such as: is this relevant to our younger British Goan generation today? Do they really care? A handful of young British Goans turned up for the exhibition, confidently sharing their viewpoint, opening up minds and hearts to realise that there is a lot of work to be done in understanding where British Goans, young and old, are at in their thinking? Why is there a division between the older and younger generation? Or perhaps mere misunderstanding has arisen? It was interesting to see bridges being built to close that 'generation' gap. Ultimately, the feeling was that the exhibition was important to the young British Goans present. Though there was not a strong sense of connection to the East African part of our migration history (for it is somewhat a memory in the mind of our parents with most of us never having set foot on African soil), there was still a yearning for answers to the fundamental questions any young Goan asks: Who am I? Why am I 'different'? How do I define where I am from? What is my identity? The young lads present tried to express how life is for them in 21st century Britain as a Goan; in the discussion issues of identity, history, culture, racism and discrimination, music, dress, food, language, nationality, heritage, migration and home all came to the fore. The exhibition was fascinating: photographs and articles, scans of Portuguese identity papers for Goans and newspaper clippings showing the British media's response to the incoming Goans from Malawi. Everything present was a visible snapshot of the life experience of the Goan community in Africa, their displacement and migration to Britain in particular. What arose at the end of this marvellous exhibition was something I would like to term Goanisity - to be Goan - what does it mean? How Goan can you be? What identifies a Goan? And why do the older generation feel more Goan and the younger ones feel so isolated? Perhaps part of the answer to that final question is down to migration and loss of continuity. You are visibly identified as an ethnic Indian, with brown skin and dark hair, apart for the fact that your name is very Christian with a Portuguese infusion. Your birthplace is not Goa or the Indian subcontinent. The birthplace of your parents is not either, but you are not African. You neither speak Konkani, though your parents might, nor a language of the Indian subcontinent. You are Catholic (for the most part), but you do not have a clue what 'ladainha' is all about. The complex migration story meant that younger generations were cut off from certain cultural aspects of being Goan as their parents' and grandparents' stories may have included various parts of India, Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika Zanzibar, Malawi, Belgian Congo, the Middle East and often returns to Goa. Yet the young Goan in Britain just knows the UK and maybe the odd holiday to Goa at Christmas or Easter for a week or two. Their parents pass on less of that sense of 'Goanisity' as their Goan life story also includes Africa and less Konkani songs and more Jim Reeves! The complexity of what it means to be Goan and the fact that older Goans especially feel so strongly about their identity and roots in Goa, despite their own story being quite a layered mix of languages, lands, cultures and histories, means that the younger generation who are immersed in multicultural Britain without the same living memory as their parents and grandparents struggle to understand who they are and wrestle with the question of identity. The result of this is that you can call yourself Goan and you can prefix British to that, but interestingly your 'Goanisity' will include the East African influence, the Portuguese influence, the British influence and maybe other parts of the world thrown in. Even with the roots deep on Goan soil, the complex history of Goa from its earliest days reveals more and more about the complex identity of the Goan individual and the Goan community over time. Our layers of identity will be as complex as the intricate detailing of our DNA - stretching it out and

[Goanet] Driving in India/Goa
Here are some of my personal observations about driving in India.. 1. Those infernal horns, honking for the least reason. Even the signs on every Truck proclaims 'HORN OK PLEASE. Trucks with their super loud horns blast away telling all of us in teeny cars to scatter or be run over ! 2. Indian roads were made for ox-carts and horse carts and bicyles. In my younger days when we alighted by train at Victoria Terminus (now CST) in Bombay (now Mumbai) we got to our final destinations in Victorias, those elegant carriages drawn by two horses clip-clop, clippety clop. Now the roads are crowded with cars or all sizes, trucks, auto rickshaws and those infernal two-wheelers..Two wheelers weave in and out between cars. Even a space of 6 inches suffices for two wheeler to squeeze through. They know that cars rather than risk a collision (for which the car driver is inevitably blamed) will let him/her through. 3. As the sun sets, many drivers do not turn on their headlights until it is pitch dark. Perhaps they are saving their headlights from burning out two soon. And when they do put on their headlights very often it is at full beam, blinding oncoming traffic. I turn on my headlights at dusk and soon hear cries from pedestrians lights' lights to inform me that my headlights are on. I bring their attention to the street lights that have come on and point to my headlights, and they smile sheepishly at their foolishness. 4. When I arrive at a T junction, very very often, I find cars or scooters on the main road who want to make a right turn, take a short cut and head straight at me, with both of us having to take last minute evasive action. Why dont drivers keep to their side of the road ?? 5. Do Not Overtake signs mean nothing to most drivers especially two-wheelers who overtake with impunity as there are no traffic cops to enforce the law. 6. In most countries a solid divider line indicates that nobody should overtake on that stretch of road. A broken line signifies that one can overtake with caution. Drivers in India apparently think that broken lines are only there because the painters ran out of paint ! 7, A striped ZEBRA crossing across a road, indicates a pedestrian crossing. Driivers are expected to slow down to allow pedestrians to cross safely. Instead cars, two-wheelers, trucks and buses speed up as though hell bent on mowing down whoever dares to use a pedestrian crossing. 8. When driving on a highway I always notice drivers coming out from side streets without checking for oncoming traffic. This calls for extreme defensive driving on my part to avoid collision. The same holds true for cars temporarily stopped on the road for some unknown reason. One thinks that the dar has a problem and it is OK to overtake them. So I blow my horn to signal that I plan to overtake them when suddenly the stopped car decides to take off. 9. Overtaking when permissible and traffic conditions permitting should always be on the right side of the driver, right ?? Tell that to two-wheelers who will overtake you from any side. 10. When one approaches a traffic circle (round-about), who has right of way ? I asked this question of a Traffic Policeman and he shrugged his shoulders and said anyone. In all countries (other than India) that I have driven in, traffic already in the circle has the right of way. This allows for orderly entry in to the traffic circle. In India apparently there is no such rule. One plays chicken and pushes his way through regardless of anyone else being in the circle. 11. Everyone appears to be hell bent in a hurry to get somewhere, and woe be on you if you are driving at the posted speed limit, even in the slow lane. Traffic behind you will honk away and overtake you and scream obscenities if you are a law abiding driver keeping to the official speed limit. Having lived in India for close to a dozen years these are my factual observations about driving conditions here. I have held driving licenses in East Africa and several different states in the USA. Ihave driven extensively throughout East Africa, the continental United States of American, Canada, the UK and mainland Europe. By and largetraffic in those countries is orderly. Special mention must be made of drivers in the UK. When one gives a signal that one wants to make a right turn against oncoming traffic, the oncoming drivers stop and allow you to turn. No such courtesy in India. Signal all you want, nobody will give you way. You have to play chicken and dare

[Goanet] IS AADHAAR CARD IRREVALENT !
To, The Editor Gomantak Times Panjim This letter may be published in the letter to the Editor column. Regards Stephen Dias. The Aaadhaar Card and the Welfare Schemes cannot be linked together because already illegal migrants have flooded the highly fragile state like ours (State of Goa). The way in which the Aaadhaar Card have been doled to persons who are not the residents of the area has made the Aaadhaar process irrelevant and not full proof. The Government has sanctioned about Rs 12000/- crores for the the Aaahaar Card scheme, but this mess of linking to the Welfare scheme is stupid. Than we must know that Aaadhaar card are given to people who don't have bank accounts. Aaadhaar card is also given to homeless people and destitutes. By the way the first Aaadhaar Card was given to a lady in Delhi who had no roof over on her head and was homeless. Why the Maharashtra Government has linked Aaadhaar Card with marriage purposes? The purpose of Aaadhaar Card only to give you an Unique Identity that one man, one identity and one Card. The Government should put in place all the formalities to inter link bank accounts, welfare scheme and identity to make this scheme fool hardy. Hence in conclusion I must assert the Supreme Court is justified in giving its judgement against the ill conceived and ill implemented Aaadhaar Card scheme of Govt of India. GT- WEEKENDER - Sunday-29 Sep, 2013 GOMANTAK TIMES - GT Not got your Passport? Blame it on Goa cops Comments: To, The Editor, GT. Sir, I went through the grilling formalities of renewing my recently expired Indian Passport, unused since 1995, having retired from all travelling engagements as a Marine Shipboard Officer. I paid the Rs.1000/- in addition to the fees of the AGENT who prepared the documents and got the interview date fixed. My old passport was returned to me with the CANCELLED STAMP and was told that I will get my passport in a few days time by post. This was on 06/05/2013 under receipt No.GO10719785822713. Nothing happened until I got a SMS from the Mapusa Cops to see them the next day regarding my passport. However, I went to the Mapusa cops and cleared my papers the same day. This was somewhere in July, 2013. Till date my passport is in limbo and I have not made any attempts to find out why. The reason being that I want to see how long it takes to get a passport without running after the Passport Office for it. My impending family visit abroad is coming up soon and I have decided to use my newly acquired WORLD PASSPORT to travel to U.S.A - Canada. This will be the test to authenticate my ' WORLD PASSPORT' in the absence of my Indian Passport for reasons not attributable to me, for, I am going to produce all my document, including the old cancelled passport, to any authority if required by way of justification for using the WORLD PASSPORT. [Goanet] The 'NOTA' formulae
If NOTA [ NONE OF THE ABOVE] button on the EVMs or slot on the Ballot Papers is to be effective and successful in attaining the objectives of forcing political parties to choose their candidates not on their winnability power but on the personal credentials and the credentials of the respective parties fielding them, then there has to be a set formulae under which NOTA has to operate. Needless to say that with this effective tool given in the hands of voters [especially the elite voters] this tool must not undermine the electoral system and put a feather in the cap for those who have been objecting to it's fluid implementation so far. It must be understood that the political classes or parties have gotten away by fielding convicted criminals, persona non-grata, matka kings and communal wipers as their candidates for far too long based on their winnability. Note must be made here that the current Goa BJP government has a Matka King as it's legislator from the Tivim constituency. Therefore, with this neutralizing tool, voters are going to take their long sizzling revenge by voting NOTA en masse, especially the elite voters, who basically do not vote and who accounts for 15 to 20 per cent non-voting. NOTA will see that these non-voters will vote, even if voting is not made compulsory, only if the there is some effectiveness in it's implementation. Therefore the EC must come up with a set of formulae where if NOTA votes are sizeable, reaching a predetermined figure, the elections must be made null and void paving the way for re-elections in that particular constituency/s with the contesting candidates debarred from contesting in these re-elections. This would be a welcome exercise, ONCE. But the re-election process must not bog-down again and again due to the mis-use of NOTA to wreak havoc in the electoral processes. Therefore care must be taken that the re-election process will go ahead with NOTA still in place, but minimizing the chances that it might be mis-used. GSRP suggests ways how this can be done. Example: Stats of the 2012 GLA Elections from the 10 ALDONA CONSTITUENCY. Total votes polled = 20314 in 41 Polling Booths. Total No. of Candidates contesting = 5 To bring in NOTA Average vote share of each candidate : [20314 votes divided by 5 candidates] = 4062.8 votes Multiplying this figure of 4062.8 votes by a standard pre-decided fraction of say 0.05 [example] to account for the percentage votes not voted, a figure of 203.14 votes is obtained. Adding 203.14 to 4062.8 gives a figure of 4265.94 Rounding this figure to the next nearest number gives a figure of 4266. THIS MUST BE THE MINIMUM 'NOTA' VOTES POLLED IN THE CONSTITUENCY TO CANCEL THE ELECTIONS AND BRING IN FRESH ELECTIONS WITH ALL THE PREVIOUS CONTESTING CANDIDATES DEBARRED FROM CONTESTING IN THESE RE-ELECTIONS. Scrapping NOTA for the re-elections will not serve any purpose. Therefore the NOTA figure should be enhanced for the re-election so that it becomes difficult to attain for the second time. Suggested NOTA formula for the re-election would be: Total No. votes polled x 0.05 [as previously used] x any new factor that is envisaged viz. 0.20 or 0.25 or 0.3 etc If we take the no. of votes polled during re-election to be the same i.e. 20314, and the number of contesting candidates as 5 again, the new NOTA figure would be: 20314 '/. 5 x 0.05 x 0.3 [for example] = 6545.722 viz. 6546. It is unlikely that this figure will be attained for the second stage of voting where the candidates on offer would be generally acceptable to the voters. Just our humble suggestion to make NOTA a very effective tool to cleanse criminal and undesirable elements from democratic elections. After waiting for years together for NOTA to be implemented, if it becomes a lame duck, it will be a defeat to the people who have been dreaming of this cleansing agent and a victory to the CORRUPTED TO THE CORE NATION and National Politics. (Photo is attached) = (FDA needs to inspect the food supply whether it is hygienic and also if illegally cooking is taking place.) Who has permitted them to cook and supply food to this Casino Pride and others of offshore gambling vessels is a mystery. Also this structure where this cooking is being done appears to be a permanent metallic closed structure which is illegally constructed without the permission from CCP. (CCP needs to carry out the inspection). The photographs clearly indicate that the kitchen activity is carried out and the cooked food in great magnitude is delivered to the casino ships. Cooked vessels in aluminum cans can be seen at the jetty and at the pavement of the building. (Photo is attached). [Goanet] New Breed of BJP MLAs. They speak their mind - By Nisser Dias
* By Nisser Dias 26th Sept 2013* * * *New breed of BJP MLAs. They speak their mind.* The outburst of the San Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh against his own government particularly targeting the chief minister Manohar Parrikar has cast serious doubts about the manner the administration in the state is being run. He has rightly drawn a comparison between the previous Congress regime lead by Digambar Kamat and the current dispensation. He is of course not alone in his crusade against his own government. Calangute BJP MLA Michael Lobo also has voiced similar concerns earlier. The latter had gone to the extent of stating that the law and order in the state is dismal and needs to be improved. During the Digambar Kamat regime, Parrikar as an Oppostion Leader kept on harping that the law and order had collapsed. It has now come to haunt him and even worse is the fact his own party-men are saying it in public thereby embarrassing the government. These outbursts give new dimensions to the functioning of the chief minister which is always seen as autocratic or one man rule. At the same time it exposes that Parrikar is losing his iron grip over his party-man and the fear they had of him earlier is waning off. In 2002 or 2004 during his stint as chief minister none of the ministers or MLAs had the courage to stand up to him nor had they the guts to voice dissent against his decisions be it at party forums or publicly but now that seems to be a thing of the past. Vishnu Wagh and Michael Lobo are made of a different mould who have the nerve to speak their mind. They are of a different breed who will call a spade a spade. I might not agree with both the demands of the San Andre MLA since education in English is a demand of a large section of parents all over the state and resumption of a cruel sport of bullfights which the Supreme Court has banned for the sadistic pleasure of few is also not acceptable. But the manner in which he has ridiculed the government is keeping in line with the sentiments voiced by Digambar Kamat when he was deserting the BJP. Wagh has not stopped just there he went many steps ahead to say that the state is currently under the rule of the rich. This is quite a pertinent statement specially because at a public meeting on mining recently chief minister stopped short of attacking the mine owners for their involvement in illegal mining and amassing wealth and instead attacked environmentalist for having knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court to stop illegal mining and destruction of environment or the natural beauty of Goa. More than a year and half back when Manohar Parrikar took over the reigns of the state he had promised to streamline the administration to make it people friendly but in none of the government departments can one notice a change. Police functioning is still lethargic and their overall performance is abysmal. Promises by the chief minister are galore but they continue to be only promises, short term solutions are plenty but no legislations, school children are still getting poisoned after consuming mid-day meals, there is no change in syllabus but there is extension of school timings. Promises of increasing of agriculture produce are floating in the air but production has dropped compared to earlier five years. The list can go on and on. BJP MLA Vishnu Wagh was right in saying that pall of gloom has descended on Goa as it doesn’t seem to be moving ahead. To add to the chief minister’s woes one of the allies former Tourism minister and GVP MLA Mickky Pacheco also dropped another bombshell. As chairman of the Assembly committee probing the alleged drug trade nexus between politicians and drug lords he accused the police department of non co-operation. Which translates into non co-operation by the Home ministry a portfolio held by the chief minister. The question that arises is, are the police withholding the information at the instance of the Home minister? On the face of it, it seems so. And if it is so then the Assembly committee is just a farce to pull wool over the eyes of the public and keep the accused politicians on a tight leash. It is indeed sad state of affairs under this government where transparency, sanctity, truth and trust have no place. The government was brought to power on the premise that it would clean up the administration, improve law and order, bring all those who have looted and raped Goa to amass illegal wealth through various means to justice, recover losses to the exchequer to the tune of thousands of crores but over the 18 months nothing has changed and in future it does not look like that it will change. It is our fate. How true is the saying, “we get the government we elect”. In my opinion things are not going to change in Goa till the Congress led alliance rules at the Centre but if the reigns of governance are

[Goanet] Lessons from Nairobi attack? A warning for Goa (TOI - Vivek Menezes)
Lessons from Nairobi attack? A warning for Goa Vivek Menezes, TNN | Sep 29, 2013, 03.31 AM IST Hearts sank across India this week, as scenes of the horrific terrorist assault on Nairobi's Westgate Mall filtered onto our television and computer screens. Most store-owners in the complex are Indian Kenyans, many were killed right away. Plus, the two countries have been closely linked since before independence, Goa's own Pio da Gama Pinto and Fitz de Souza fought with distinction for Kenya's decolonization, and Mapusa-born Joseph Murumbi Zuzarte was the new country's Vice President and one of its greatest statesmen. But even more significant cause for Indian worry is the deadly similarity between this week's Nairobi attack, and the lethal commando invasion of Mumbai on 26/11, 2008, that lasted three days, paralyzed the entirety of South Bombay, and killed and wounded almost 500 people. On that day, we learned how unprepared even the financial capital of the country was for the kind of incident that has become all too common in our troubled times: information systems broke down, emergency response failed completely, and even the most elite armed responders turned out to be comprehensively ill-equipped and untrained. The situation is reportedly improved in Mumbai now, and the continuing occurrence of these kinds of attacks around the world has led security forces to prepare more substantially. But the Nairobi disaster is grim reminder the threat can come from unexpected directions, with many details that are of particular relevance to our own, still blessedly becalmed Goa. First, it does no good to stereotype where the attackers will come from. On Tuesday, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta reported a British woman and three Americans were involved. His foreign minister, Amina Mohammed rightly concluded these facts underline the global nature of the threat the world now faces. Here, it is important to note that it was an American, David Headley who first drew Goa into the international terror ambit, spending weeks in the state scouting potential targets against Israelis in the free-wheeling nigh-lawless beach belt that stretches north from Anjuna through Pernem. Second, it is nearly impossible to prevent a committed band of terrorists from initiating their plans, but the first response-and first responders-are absolutely crucial to containing the damage. Nairobi is a dangerous and crime-affected city, so the police and other teams who arrived at the scene within the first minutes were fairly seasoned, and immediately engaged the terrorists with return fire. That helped keep casualties down. The same unfortunately didn't happen on 26/11 except in a couple of places-notably VT station, where guards heroically faced down AK-47's with 50-year-old Enfields-but it should be noted that in both places Kasab and company immediately changed plans and bolted. God forbid it ever happen in our Goa, but what would happen if a similar team opportunistically chose a target as packed with foreigners as Nairobi's Westgate Mall? How many days would it take for adequate response to arrive, with what cost of life, not to mention reputation? Here note that it took almost a decade for big-bucks Bali tourism to recover after its nightclub bombings in 2002. So Nairobi also teaches us that it is imperative Goa immediately constitute serious, workable disaster contingency plans that are further widely communicated to the public. Officialdom moves slowly across the state-there are villages where you never see a cop for days on end. In the time of need it will be imperative that citizens know what to do, and who to contact beyond local police. Finally, nobody wants to see our famously open, relaxed and tolerant Goan culture change more than it has to. But by allowing large swathes of the state to lapse beyond the reach of the police, we are asking for serious trouble. As learned from Afghanistan before 9/11, and now Somalia (from where the Nairobi terrorists apparently got their orders) lawless areas attract terrorists. No-go territories quickly become a base of their operations. In this regard, in the middle of an age of attacks like Nairobi, it's frankly unbelievable that ruling party legislator Dayanand Mandrekar could actually call an IPS officer a goonda for actually doing his mandated job to oppose criminality by raiding illegal parties. The intention seems to be to create a no-go territory right here in our state: certain disaster. Just this week, the CM himself admitted Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal stayed in the exact same area Mandrekar was talking about. The accused terrorist lived here as long as he wanted, rode his motorbike wherever he wanted. Manohar Parrikar then chillingly admitted, The NIA, during the search of his house, found bomb-making equipment. What more evidence do we need that the writing is on the wall for Goa? The real goondas will surely have taken heed. (ENDS) The writer is a well

In rare thanks giving gesture, Kangress government cleared a proposed ordinance in a jiffy to protect Lalu Ji who is likely to be implicated in a fodder scam by a trial court in Jharkhand! The ordinance is expected to be sent shortly to thumb master for promulgation! This ordinance will circumvent the order passed by SC in connection with convicted MPs and MLAs giving them free hands to committee even hilarious serious offences and yet enjoy constitutional security! [Goanet] Petroleum minister exhorts staff to take public transport
Come October 9, if you are a Delhiite, dont get astonished seeing Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily as your co-passenger in a metro rail coach or a city bus. Moily want to do this to lead by example every Wednesday to encourage fuel conservation. (Surprisingly Moily is starting his bus yatra only from October 9! Why not from today onwards!! Moily has also not specified whether his family members will also do the same thing!!!) As part of a fuel conservation drive to save at least $5 billion in the countrys import bill this year, the minister would take the lead by taking public transport to his office every Wednesday. (Moily must have forgotton that if every minister and top government officials including their family members stops using car for 1 day a week loads of petrol will be saved!) More, the ministry has issued a circular asking all ministry officials and staff of public sector undertakings under it to do likewise, marking Wednesdays as a bus day. There are about 150,000 employees in the 14 PSUs under the ministry. The minister, who stays at Tughlak Lane, would ply on the Metro from Race Course station to Central Secretariat. Not just Moily, you may even see public sector undertaking honchos like ONGC Chairman Sudhir Vasudeva, Indian Oil chief R S Butola and Hindustan Petroleum chief S Roy Choudhury using public transport, if Moilys plan works!!! The ministry would mark one day in a week as bus day. I have issued a circular encouraging all the staffers under the ministry and related PSUs to utilise public transport for commutation. Taking the lead, I will take a metro or a bus on every Wednesday, starting from October 9, Moily said. Last week, the minister had unveiled a six-week Mega Petroleum Conservation Campaign, starting Tuesday. The ministry had got cricketer Virat Kohli and badminton star Saina Nehwal as brand ambassadors for this Rs 45-crore campaign. Among the steps proposed were free-bicycling schemes and training for truck and state transport drivers. Plus, general awareness programmes through print and electronic media. ( Moily must declared the amount paid to Virat and Saina for thie campaign!!) When asked about Moilys plan, a miffed petroleum industry official said, In every dharma, people fast. Does that mean food consumption comes down? Fuel consumption is similar taking the bus would not bring fuel consumption down. These days Moily is turned oilier and slipper thats all he forgot to ask Manmohan, Sonia and Rahul to do just the way he proposed to do to save petrol.
[Goanet] Dhobi talao
Eugene Correia: Today, it's an empty shell with both Kyani restaurant shut down and Bastani very few Goan customers. To Goans in Mumbai and elsewhere Dhobitalao is what it's to be Goan. Today's Goans staying there may not even know whose status it is inside the commpound of the Cawasji Framji Library, opposite Metro and Bastani restaurant. Response: First of all I would like to congratulate Roland for the well written article which brought alive the spirit of goan life in the 60's and 70's in Dhobi Talao. Nothing in life remains constant and life in Dhobi Talao too has changed. However, there still remains a sizable goan presence in the area. I would like to comment on a few points on Dhobi talao today. 1. Bastani's too closed down quite many years ago. 2. Many goans have migrated to Canada, Australia, NZ and elsewhere. 3. Many goans have shifted to Borivli and Malad. Today IC Colony in Borivali could be considered a mini-Goa. You can pick up almost any goan item from there - sausages, masalas, konkani casettes, balchaos, goan sweets etc. 4. Today with direct flights to goa, very few shippies stop over in Bombay and so many of the kudds are going to the dogs. With property prices hitting the roof each day, and no one to protect these properties, many of them are threatened by land sharks. Many of these kudds are in bad shape with little funds available for repairs and maintenance, 5. There are two Institutes located here. One, The Piety Home for the Aged, which I believe is over 100 years old. It is run entirely by lay people and has around 16 inmates. It is entirely free and the inmates are well looked after- physically and medically. The other is the Goan Institute which was recently renovated. It is over 145 years old and is still the most popular meeting ground for the goans residing in this area. The membership fees are very nominal and the Institute earns its revenue from renting out the hall. For the members the charges are very nominal. 6. The jewellers in Chira Bazar who are mostly marwadis speak in fluent konkani which would put many of us goans to shame. Regards, Marshall
