[Goanet] Asian Sensational Victories

2013-10-05 Thread Antonio Menezes
Till the Second World War or thereabouts, the Asian people suffered
from some sort of a complex. They thought Europeans were a master
invincible race.

At the beginning of the Second World War , the British sent its then
technological wonder , a navy ship called ''Prince of Wales'' to
Singapore to block any attempt by the Japanese navy of making any
incursion into the Indian Ocean thus putting their Crown Jewel i.e.
British India into a great peril. The Japanese navy or to be more precise
their Kamikaze fighter planes made a short shrift and sent the Prince
of Wales to the bottom of the ocean, thus creating a thrilling sensation
in Asian people.

The second such thrilling event took place in 1954 when a brilliant
Vietnamese General called Vo Nguyen Giap at the head of a rag tag
army employing guerrilla tactics defeated the mighty French Foreign
Legion ( of Vive La France fame ) at the battle of Dien Bien Phu.
General Giap died recently at the ripe old age of 102.

[Goanet] Christians want state laws to govern assets of churches

2013-10-05 Thread U. G. Barad

Church funds equal Indian Navy's annual budget
Deccan Herald
October 1, 2013

Christians want state laws to govern assets of churches

Christians are a mere 2.5 per cent of the country’s population. But, the
Church in India suffers from a case of plenty, says Remy Denis, All India
Catholic Union President.

Church authorities control funds equivalent to the Indian Navy’s annual
budget. The Church is also the second largest employer after the government,
he said.

Eduardo Faleiro, a former Union minister and Goa NRI Commissioner, is among
the growing number of Catholics like Prof Denis, who support a law to govern
Church properties and a far greater degree of transparency in the way the
Church manages its earthly assets.

“The Church is not a symbol of power but service, and democratic laws must
apply to it equally. All religions must be kept on the same footing,”
Faleiro said at a conference called to debate the matter of bringing Church
properties under state laws.

The laws that govern Church properties in Goa were enacted during the
Portuguese regime. The same laws have long since been repealed in Portugal,
Faleiro said.

Almost all other religions in India have laws enacted to administer their
properties, K T Thomas, former Supreme Court judge, said. Hindu temples are
governed by laws specifically enacted for each trust and their accounts are
subject to judicial review. The Sikhs, one of the smallest religious groups
in the country, have the Sikh Gurudwara Act. Muslim trust properties comes
under the Wakf Act.

“I feel the opposition from the Christians is on account of a fear that a
provision for judicial scrutiny is likely to expose the expenses and
magnitude of wealth of the denomination,” Thomas said. The head of the
Believers Church had recently acquired a huge plantation in Kerala for Rs
123 crore. This was apart from the vast assets already held by the
denomination, he said. The Church in Kerala also runs its own media
network.

Thomas said there was a misplaced apprehension that the Parliament, through
legislation, would grab the properties of the churches. No such law could be
passed by Parliament or State legislatures, he said. All religious
denominations have the right to own and acquire properties, establish and
maintain religious institutions. “But, in matters of administration of your
properties you have to abide by the law,” he said.

Beyond any doubt the protest against Centre's decision to carve out a
separate Telangana state without deliberation in the parliament is turning
violent day after day! The situation is also getting uncontrollable for
Kangress party too!! Who is to be blamed for this creation no one
knows...every Kangressman is showing figure to other Kangressman...

But yes, only one darling boy in the Kangress party can patch up the
situation that too by publicly saying, 'Creation of Telengana by Union
Cabinet Ministers Meeting is NONSENSE and the decision should be 'TORN UP
and THROWN AWAY.

With these few words the growing agitations can be put to rest and yet
RahulBaba will be a darling boy of UNEDUCATED MASSES!!! What say?

[Goanet] Come December 8th 2013!!!!!!!

2013-10-05 Thread U. G. Barad
Assembly election dates for Rajasthan, New Delhi, Mizoram, Chattisgarh, and
Madhya Pradesh were announced today.

Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath said naxal-affected Chhattisgarh will
vote first in two phases for its 90 Assembly seats on November 11 and 19.

The model code of conduct that prohibits policy announcements, inaugurations
or foundation stone laying ceremonies, kicks in right away. Hope our cabinet
ministers in connivance with high command don’t force ‘dancing doll’ to take
emergency decisions and draft extraordinary ORDINANCEs during this
period!

VOTES FOR ALL FIVE STATE ASSEMBLIES TO BE COUNTED ON DECEMBER 8

• Chattisgarh: First to go to polls, will be held in two phases. Elections
to be held on November 11 and 19
• Madhya Pradesh: Single phase polls in state, polls will be held on

• Rajasthan: Polls to be held in single phase, elections will be held on
December 1
• New Delhi: Polls to be held in single phase, elections will be held on

Re: [Goanet] Naval airport at Karwar (Mario Vaz, Chinchinim) (Goanet Reformat)

2013-10-05 Thread Edwin/Diana Pinto

Re:Naval airport at Karwar (Mario Vaz, Chinchinim) (Goanet Reformat)

In response to Mr. Mario Vaz's letter Naval Airport at Karwar, GFDO would
like to state that when individuals come together for a cause, a set of
priorities is created, based upon which a strategy is formulated. From Mario
Vaz's letter, it is abundantly clear that acquiring civilian status for
Dabolim Airport and getting the Navy out is a burning priority for him.
Therefore, going by the strong opinion expressed by him, he is absolutely
free to set up his own organisation and push for this issue so very close to
his heart, or he could join GFDO and try to convince its members of the
urgency of the issue he has raised over and above the priorities arrived at
by them after some thought and deliberation. After all, it is an
indisputable fact of life that strong convictions backed by practical and
tangible support is always appreciated.

GFDO is well aware of the sacrifices made by ordinary people who get
together and give of their time, energy and even finances in campaigning and
working for community issues. Hence it will never publicly undermine
ordinary citizens engaged in a struggle for a public cause, even if there
are underlying differences in perceptions. As such, whatever path Mr. Mario
Vaz may choose to tread, GFDO wishes him all success and the very best in
his endeavours.

Convenor, GFDO

do the needful. [Tried to call in our presence but Mr. Nangre-Patil's line was
busy]. Police Commissioner requested us to meet with the Add;. Commissioner. We
waited the whole day but there was no call from his office for this meeting.
Addl. Commissioner Nangre-Patil says Activists should be helped and protected
but unfortunately, Local Bandra and Khar Police Station differ from their
Superiors and refuse to follow instructions.

Detailed memorandum of complaints attached which are self explanatory. For more
details you could speak with Ms Aftab Siddiqui.[9821887020]

If this is how the Police treat Activists what must be happening to the common
man??? We shudder to think

There was some excitement when three activists, Ms Aftab Siddiqui, Chairperson,
ALM 144, Ms Roshni Shaikh and Mr. Dolphy Dsouza, Convenor -Police Reforms
Watch were at the gate of the residence of Shri Satyapal Singh, Police
Commissioner of Mumbai today, October 05 at 7.30 a.m.

The previous day, Ms Siddiqui had handed over a personal note to the Security
of the Police Commissioner at his residence that we would like to meet with him
tommorrow, October 05 to discuss the contentious issues.

We were told that we could meet him at the Grievance Day which is being held at
V.P.Police Station, Charni Road, October 05 which the activists did. The Police
Commissioner gave a patient hearing and said that Natural Justice should be
given and relevant complaince reports should be given without any further
delay. He said that he would speak with Mr.Vishwas Nangre-Patil, Addl.
Commissioner, Western Zone, which he tried in our presence but the line was
busy. He asked us to meet with Mr. Nangre- Patil so that the needful could be
done. But there has been no call for this meeting from his office till now.

Ms Aftab Siddiqui explained the sequence of events to the Police Commissioner
and why finally we had to meet with him to seek his intervention..

If the concerned police stations do not follow instructions of two of the
finest officers namely, Addl.Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil and DCP Cherring
Dorje with whom she was following regularly what hope is there to resolve such
contenious issues some of which are pending since the last 3 years.

In reference to Bandra West Police Station, Item no 02 of 11/08/13, the Adddl.
Commissioner Vishwas Nangre-Patil during the meeting on 16/09/13 issued a Memo
to ACP Mr. Suresh Marathe and has also re-opened the Enquiry to give full
fledged justice. The Enquiry no is 352/13. We thank him for his intervention.

ALM 144, 33rd Road, Khar and Police Reforms Watch demands that information
pertaining to the status, compliance reports of these cases as earmarked in the
detailed note should be given without any further delay. The said Memorandum
has also been given to the relevant police stations as also Add.Commissioner,
Shri Vishwas Nangre Patil and DCP Shri Cherring Dorje.

We also need to put on notice that if this is not done, we will have no choice
but to escalate the protests outside the DGP's and Home Minister's residences.

Is this too much to expect from the Police Stations. If from a data from one
complainant, who has been following since the last 3 years, so many cases are
un-resolved, what about the others??

The Home Minister the other day remarked Let every citizen give one minute to
the City but here 3 years have passed by yet no resolution to the issues.

In response to Mr. Mario Vaz's letter Naval Airport at Karwar, GFDO

Mario Vaz's letter, it is abundantly clear that acquiring civilian status
for Dabolim Airport and getting the Navy out is a burning priority for him.
Therefore, going by the strong opinion expressed by him, he is absolutely
free to set up his own organisation and push for this issue so very close
to his heart, or he could join GFDO and try to convince its members of the
urgency of the issue he has raised over and above the priorities arrived

indisputable fact of life that strong convictions backed by practical and

GFDO is well aware of the sacrifices made by ordinary people who get
together and give of their time, energy and even finances in campaigning

ordinary citizens engaged in a struggle for a public cause, even if there

My dear Professor Pinto

On this relatively light Saturday, a day on which I received a spirited
verbal attack (on Marshall Mendonza and myself) from the shadows of Aldona,
I thought that I'd also read your posts of the past two months. No question
that your recent knee-jerk posts encouraged me to do some extra research.
So, here goes. You are free to slam my responses (with or without
knowledge).

Please be advised that I can speak ONLY based on my experience and
knowledge. I prefer NOT to speak on the basis of non-knowledge.

re:
http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2013-September/234249.html

Augusto Pinto (AP) to jc / jc's responses interspersed:

AP1: Everyone has seen the pathetically lame responses you gave when you
say that you don't know about the distinctions among the Confraria of Velim
among many other obfuscations and evasions and outright lies.

jc1: I am delighted to note that 'everyone has seen my responses'. As
nobody else from the 'everybody' has called my responses, 'obfuscations and
evasions and outright lies', I invite you as politely or unpolitely as
possible to please clarify HOW you came to form an opinion about MY
PERSONAL non-knowledge of anything incl something called Confraria -
something about which I still do not know anything.nor do I want to
know.

IF you know better about what I know tell us.

==

AP2: Don't you think dear jc, that you would be doing yourself a favor by
acknowledging that you belong to a caste whose ancestors have harassed and
humiliated the lower castes such as Mahars and Gawdas? Don't you think you
should be doing your best to assuage the hurt that they have done instead
of living in a state of denial?

jc2: Allow me please, dear Sirjee, to confirm yet again that I DO NOT
belong to any caste. I also repeat that I am a practising Roman Catholic by
choice. If I ever practiced the Caste System in any shape or form, that
would automatically make me (IMHO) a non-Catholic.

As I have stated before, I do not know IF my ancestors were Hindu,
Buddhist, Muslim or Atheists. I do NOT even want to know. Besides, I
personally believe, rightly or wrongly, that those 'ostensible' Catholics
who have post-1961 been displaying their (pre-conversion) Hindu surname in
their outpourings, are doing so to display their superiority over other
Catholics. That is adding to the oxymornishness of the term Catholic
Bamon/Brahmin' et al.

If you must categorize me, please note that I prefer to consider myself
whatever is the lowest among the non-'castes'. Trust me, life is simpler
and cheaper outside that Apartheid circus tent.

About taking responsibility for the perceived or real actions of my
forebears, please be advised that I will take responsibility ONLY for MY
actions (now that NONE of my children are minors). The next thing I might
hear from some non-Goan is I must take responsibility for Augusto's
knee-jerk reactions because Augusto is also a Goan. No such thing. The Law
of Tort is quite specific about WHO bears responsibility for WHAT. You are
a University Professor. You should know that.
==

AP3: No one is asking you to open your pocket, at least as of now nobody
has, but surely you could at least have the decency to acknowledge the
wrongs of your ancestors and have the courage to say that you will refuse
to follow in the footsteps of your forbears and indeed work towards the
welfare of the communities who were affected by them.

jc3: Please vide the response posted supra in jc2

good wishes as always.

[Goanet] Goan Voice Sunday Column: Neighbours, but foes on and off the field. By Norman Da Costa

2013-10-05 Thread Eddie Fernandes
  Source: www.goanvoice.org.uk Newsletter of 6 Oct. 2013:

The most prominent Goan clubs in Nairobi, Kenya, were separated by less
than a mile. But that’s about as close they ever got as there was no
neighbourly love displayed by either the Goan Institute or Railway Goan
Institute when their teams met on the sports field.

There existed an intense rivalry between the two of Juja Road’s
greatest sports institutions in East Africa and, thankfully, it paled in
relationship to the ones that exist in other parts of the world.

The Manchester and Milan derbies have been well documented, but
none has impacted any sport like the one that exists between Glasgow’s sworn
rivals Celtic and Rangers. Political and religious undertones have combined
to make this the most heated rivalry in soccer and transcended sports at the
club level. At the national level it’s Pakistan versus India that captivates
and brings out the worst in the millions of fans around the world and on
both sides of the border created in 1947. As a result of terrorist attacks
on Indian soil by armed Pakistani insurgents, India has cut off all ties
with their neighbours and it will be ages before the two meet in any
bilateral series much to the chagrin of the true fans.

While both the GI and RGI fielded top-notch soccer, cricket, badminton and
tennis teams, most if not all of the attention of the members was focused on
field hockey. And passions usually went up a notch during the M.R. De Souza
Gold Cup tournament held in Nairobi at Easter time. The competition
attracted the crème de la crème of clubs from across East Africa and winning
this elusive trophy had a similar feeling to lifting soccer’s World Cup. RGI
won it on three occasions with the GI taking it home once.

GI and RGI met in this competition on several occasions and the
players always had their parentage questioned by the rabid fans. It’s hard
to believe but the only place where sanity prevailed was on the City Park
murram field. Every match between the two rivals was tough and hard-hitting
with no quarter given, but there were no serious stick-swinging incidents.
One year, unfortunately, passions spilled over the sidelines and that led to
a major divide between the two clubs. I believe it was in 1967 when the RGI
Garrets produced the Gold Cup’s greatest upset. They knocked out
highly-favoured G.I. in the third round on RGI’s newly-laid turf field, the
first one of its kind in East Africa.

The game was marred by petty fouls and, at the final whistle, one of
the referees was manhandled by some of the players. It was an embarrassing
loss since GI’s lineup included all of its Olympic players. That same night
a couple of senior RGI players visited the GI and that may not have been too
smart a move. One of them was allegedly assaulted and since the player in
question was a high-ranked Olympian, the local newspapers gave the court
case that followed maximum coverage. The charges were tossed out.

But the bitter feelings lingered on for a couple of years until the
Railways decided to take back their land. All of the club’s top players in
every sport were invited to join the GI, but a few of the club’s diehards
led by Olympian inside-left Reynolds de Souza decided to give the Gold Cup
one more shot in 1970 before the curtain came down on a storied institution.
Battling with sheer guts and determination the team reached the semifinals
before bowing out to eventual champion Nairobi Sikh Union.

The rivalry died in 1971 when the RGI was dissolved and the GI, with
the infusion of new players, continued to be a force on the local scene but
the Gold Cup eluded it.

While some of the older members of both clubs resented each other, they
reluctantly banded together when the two teams came up against perennial
powerhouses Nairobi Sikh Union, Sir Ali Muslims Club and Kenya Police.

It was best though not to cross the senior members of each club as they
held deep grudges for reasons best known to them. Take three-time Olympian
Hilary Fernandes, one of the country’s best-known players who in his prime
played for the Police, the RGI and the GI before joining the Sikh Union.
It was following his move to Sikh Union that Hilary proposed to his high
school sweetheart Elsie. Since the bride’s father Braz Fernandes was a
staunch GI member the couple decided the reception would be held there. The
request was turned down. No problem. Move it to the RGI where Hilary played
on two Gold Cup-winning teams. RGI also shockingly turned Hilary and Elsie
down and they were married at the Premier (formerly Patel) Club. It was a
small-minded reaction to Hilary moving to Sikh Union.

The Sikhs treated him royally and honoured him by making him the only
non-Sikh to captain the team. He didn’t disappoint his new club by leading
it to the Gold Cup.

Petty politics played a huge role at most Goan clubs in East Africa and
it was a way of life. Most of these players who

Opinion: Why Nina Davuluri matters

By ROLAND MASCARENHAS

After Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America, the first of Indian descent in
the pageant’s history, the news elicited some predictable reactions. The
initial surprise was followed by a sense of satisfaction that attitudes were
moving in the right direction, but the feel-good mood was soured by a torrent
of racist slurs from social media trolls, who referred to the beauty queen as a
“foreigner” and even a “terrorist.”

Supporters quickly responded with condemnation of these detractors as
“ignorant” and “uneducated,” and bolstered Davuluri’s star status. Reactions to
her triumph and, to some extent, the spectacle itself, provide insights into
our society — specifically, the evolving role of citizens of Indian descent and
of the media.

Beauty pageants, once obsessed with physical attractiveness, have become a
platform for rising talents in media and entertainment — with Diane Sawyer,
Vanessa Williams, Sarah Palin and Halle Berry among the more prominent winners.
While in years past, height, weight and the bathing suit competition seemed to
matter most, judges today grade contestants on being articulate, polite and
confident. A detailed personal interview not seen on television accounts for 25
per cent of the score and the talent segment is worth 35 per cent. Personality,
social fluency and distinctiveness are the winning qualities of Miss America.
The contest is no longer a parade of pulchritude but rather a screening for a
media-savvy celebrity who will assume a high profile representing her country
in an inter-connected, and troubled, world. Enter Nina Davuluri.

Re: [Goanet] Goanet Reader: Being Goan is a state of mind, more than a mere geographical accident (Tino de Sa)

2013-10-05 Thread Ubaldo D'Souza
Bravo Tino. There are people who babble because they cannot think of
anything worthwhile to do and want to be noticed. Let it not be forgotten
that Goans had to leave Goa for want of opportunity in Goa and wherever they
pegged their tents, they contributed and left a noticeable mark. It is
undoubted and undeniable that those who remained in Goa, many secured here
by their ancestral provenances, have also created an indelible presence and
mark that they passed this way too in this world. But those who had to go to
other places in search of bread, if not butter, did well for themselves and
left blazing trails. And many are coming back, like frogs to their pond or
salmon to their spot of birth, when their out-of-Goa odyssey is successfully
done. I am one of those. There is also a reason why I do not and cannot live
in my ancestral house but then, that is no one else's concern but mine.

Hi Frederick !

Nothing can be complete with the Swahili ballad- Malaika
(My Angel in English) without reference to the original
writer of the song- Fadhili Williams and his subsequent duet
with Mona Miller- both from the Kenyan coastal city of
Mombasa.

Their version is also the only one with English lyrics. For
non-Swahili speakers, some of the songs have linguistic
distortions. While Makeba and Belafonte also have a duet
version which was not on the list.

When-ever I sing Malaika at various picnics/sing alongs in
New York city and New Jersey, I use the first three verses of
Fadhili and Mona Miller's and in the fourth stanza, I would sing
one of the popular verses from Belafonte/Makeba in place of
Fadhili's/ Mona Miller's second English verse.

When I interviewed Mona Miller in Dar es Salaam in the
mid-seventies during her only singing tour to Tanzania, she
told me that she should be singing some of Makeba's popular
South African songs in retribution for Makeba singing her
songs without her or their permission.- referring also to Fadhili.

Likewise, Fadhili in his obituary in the New York Times some
years ago , the writer makes reference to the fact that Fadhili
felt that he was given a raw deal by most of those who sang
Malaika in that he did not receive any royalties and credit
as the song writer.

Cheers.
