Bldg collapses in Canacona, 6 dead, 1 alive, over 50 trapped inside BABESH BORKAR, CANACONA | 04 January 2014 16:31 IST 5-storeyed building collapsed (Photo: Arvind Tengse) A five –storeyed building under construction collapsed at Chaudi in Canacona today afternoon while over 50 workers were working on different floors. Six dead bodies have been recovered so far while the Fire Brigade has succeeded in rescuing one worker, who is alive. Almost over 50 more are feared trapped inside. The toll is expected to rise. As almost four floors have completely collapsed, the rescue work is becoming tough. Fire Brigades from all over Goa have been brought for the rescue work. The tragedy occurred today afternoon while the workers were about to stop the work during lunch hour. Almost all the five floors collapsed with all the workers trapped inside. Police, fire brigade as well as 108 ambulances have rushed to Canacona for the rescue work. The building is a part of five-phase project of Ruby Residency, built by Delhi-based Bharat Developers. According to information, the builder had completed three buildings while construction of two buildings had almost reached completion. A slab of the same project had collapsed last year. Besides government officials, sports minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar as well as ex-MLA Vijay Pai Khot have also rushed to the spot. Later in the evening, chief minister Manohar Parrikar also reached the spot. http://www.goanews.com/news_disp.php?newsid=4742
Re: [Goanet] What lies ahead?
As for Marshall's pointing out that the quote referred to J Edgar Hoover, it could probably be. I had heard the quote, and hence my check on internet gave me that the quote was said during the civil struggle, though it didn't mention to who it referred. Here's the quote: "Better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in." Lyndon Johnson" In some books, the quote uses "in my tent" J. Edgar Hoover was keeping a close watch on the civil movement, as far as I recollect reading the civil history. He was also keeping a keen watch on President Kennedy, and there's lot of different accounts of the Kennedy assassination. It also alleged to be the work of FBI and perhaps Hoover for Kennedy's involvement with Marilyn Monroe. The words spoken by first man on the moon, Aldin, is said to have been "misunderstood" or deliberately ignored for his saying "a small step for me". Eugene Correia

[Goanet] AAM AADMI PARTY MAY TARGET GOA CASINOS - NDTV
Aam Aadmi Party may target Goa casinos Posted: 04 Jan 2014 03:38 AM PST It may have been ‘bijli’ and ‘paani’ which catapulted the AAP to power in Delhi. In Goa, India’s youngest political force may ‘gamble’ on casinos. Addressing the first formal press conference after signing up pop star Remo and several leading civil society personalities here, Aam Aadmi Party member Oscar Rebello said issues like proliferation of casinos, narcotics and real estate lobbies would be in the AAP crosshairs. The AAP would also focus on generic agendas like a strong Lokayukta, public service guarantee and grassroots governance. ”We will be against casinos. The way in which Goa is projected as a Las Vegas is something sad and distressing,” Rebello said. He added that the party would oppose the narcotics trade, which is continuing unabated in Goa irrespective of the colour of the political dispensation in power. Goa has five operational offshore casinos and nearly a dozen onshore casinos, which attract hundreds of thousands of gamblers to the state annually. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had promised to “throw the casinos into the sea”, reversed its stand after coming to power in 2012. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the casinos would be relocated into the deep seas off Goa, only after four years. Rebello added that while the newly formed unit of AAP had not had the time to formulate an agenda for Goa, he said the BJP-led coalition had left people “dejected and disappointed”. AAP will contest Goa’s two Lok Sabha seats. Courtesy: NDTV

[Goanet] Open Letter to Caitu (Benaulim MLA)
Honorable MLA, as a member of your constituency I would like to let you know that it is now almost 2 years since we voted for a change in Government. I had even come down just for 2 days to vote in the March 2012 assembly elections. However, today I am deeply disappointed to note that the change for the better has not happened. Benaulim/Colva is in the same state as it was 2 years back; if not worse. To be honest, I have not seen any significant improvements since you have been elected by the people to serve our great constituency. (1) Beaches still filthy, (2) Many Commercial establishments still polluting the environment, (3) Garbage still being burnt in open areas (4) SAG Ground at Colva still in a pathetic state etc i.e. even the basics are not in place. It is a shame to see the World Famous Colva beach in such a deplorable state. And for me to be particularly concerned, among others 2 things that I hear you are actively pursuing are environmentally destructive projects like (A) Petrol Pump at Benaulim and (B) Concretisation of a lush green lake opposite Colva Church, despite objections from the people and opinions against the same, by the experts. On the latter, you are also aware that the Gram Sabha held on 6th October was aborted by the current Colva Sarpanch, in face of massive opposition by members, who were against the concretisation. Dear Sir, I request you to work with us - including me - for the betterment of our beautiful constituency. I am for development but constructive development which will safeguard our environment and also benefit our future generations On this matter I request other Benaulimkars who voted for change to also give their views, if the positive change has happened or not in Benaulim; since March 2012. Only a few minutes Thankfully, both the govt and private forecasting services are accurate and they give you plenty of details as to when and how severe the storms will be. This allows everyone the opportunity to prepare and out ride the storm. The forecast on the length and severity of the storms also have tremendous commercial value. Traders use the info as ammunition to trade natural gas and gas futures. The colder the storm, the more the gas consumption. A storm such as the current one, which covers half the northeast coast, provides rare opportunities. For those interested, here are my pictures of last weeks ice storm. http://www.flickr.com/photos/45002663@N00/11551193925/in/set-72157639374753953 Mervyn And Cecil, you don't even have to ask. COMMENT: A good post, RF I have NO problem with greedy individuals getting duped by con artists. That is the price of greed. It is a risk one takes when one does not do due diligence esp with these MLMs. It is not only greed, it sometimes is related to personal problems esp. Health Related. There have been several forms of preying on those with chronic illness. Goa is famous for RMP 'doctors' who promise cures for all kinds on illnesses. The mere fact that these 'doctors' are able to hold 'clinics' in the various cities/towns of Goa demonstrates how good a watchdog the Medical Council is in Goa. Another issue with this particular 'operation' is one of threats and alleged hypnotism. [Goanet] Sexual Harassment and the alleged Football conspiracy !
Dear all, The following case interests me from a legal-medical-ethical point of view. Please accept that I remain an ongoing student of all three disciplines. This post is posted on the basis of that studentship. 1: I do not know all the facts of this case ...accordingly 2: I do not support the contention that 'all proceedings should be dropped' ...for 3: once these charges are made, however difficult they are to defend against 4: if they are not appropriately defended against, the stain and pain caused by the accusation will remain and 5: if they are accurate but dropped, injustice would have been perpetrated. So .I suggest that vociferous but honest evidence and defence be presented and cross examined ... even if it means that "All the Facts" (uncomfortable as they may turn out to be) become publicly known. Importantly, If the charges are made in public, so should the defence against the charges. I do NOT support the dropping of any investigation or charges, in such situations, unless it is 100% voluntarily done by the alleged victim. If the case is deemed to be frivolous or is otherwise lost, appropriate costs should be assigned. This will not only be fair, it will also discourage more such cases. In the UK, justices are known to frown upon the so-called Litigation Culture of the US. The conspiracy element alleged in this case is separate and apart from the 'harassment' charge. jc http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Mohun-Bagan-used-female-intern-to-frame-A-K-Ganguly-PIL/articleshow/28355711.cms "The petitioner said Jaising had been "working relentlessly to get justice Ganguly arrested unlawfully and to get him removed from WBHRC by building pressure on the government through media hoax, scandal and propaganda at the cost of the reputation and his rights over privacy." Petitioner Singh derided the way Indian systems operate. She said "there has been a steep rise in the abuse of criminal law in the hands of the individuals with vested criminal interests abetted by unscrupulous lawyers, with the growing materialistic Indian culture of making big money quickly through corrupt means unlike western culture which is turning towards spiritualism." After vouching for the 'upright' western systems experienced during her 7-year stay in UK, Singh feared for the safety of justice Ganguly, who is facing sexual harassment allegations from a law intern, given the amendment to the sexual harassment laws and the vindictive nature of police. Seeking dropping of every proceeding initiated or to be initiated by the government and protecting him from possible arrest, Singh said: "The courts at lower levels callously take cognizance of every case on routine basis without even bothering to go through the ingredients of the FIRs/complaints. Unlike the courts in the western countries, the court proceedings in India are not under monitor of camera and are not being video-recorded."
[Goanet] INSULTING NEWS REPORT BY PARRIKAR
To, The Editor/s NAVHIND TIMES, TIMES OF INDIA, GOMANTAK TIMES, HERALD. THE GOAN, GOA TODAY AND GOAN OBSERVER. Request all the Editors in Goa, to publish this letter in the interest of Goans. Regards Stephen Dias D.Paula Date: 4.1.2014 Mob: 9422443110 SHOCKING NEWS FROM PARRIKAR Yesterday on 3rd Jan 2014, I have read in all the local newspapers a news report coming from Parrikar telling Goans that he will not allow an entry into the casinos by February end. This news came to us as shocking and embarrassing to all the Goans especially for those who would like to play or were adapted with the casino gambling eventhough it is not good. It is not fair for Goans only to shut their entry into the casinos as it is not their fault since casinos ships are already having permission to remain in Mandovi by Parrikar and having their offices in the shores of Panjim. It is very simple, how one can be stopped entry into his own house. The first step what Parrikar should have done is sent these casinos out of anchorage away from Mandovi river and then automatically Goans presence in casinos would have been limited or reduced to minimum. By giving such an order that Goans will into be allowed entry in casinos is very much insulting to us. In the same yardstick he could have very well said for no alcohol drinking, no gambling in 5-star hotels, no prostitution, no urination, no defecation, no smoking, no dancing in open streets/roads/halls etc is allowed in this state. I feel he should think twice before such an order is in force. Stephen Dias A GOAN D.Paula == Note: Tomorrow he might say no Goans are allowed entry into Lusofenia games, or IFFI etc.
[Goanet] Shells in Goan Houses
The nacre on windows of old Goan houses is the subject of a photo blog by Goanetter Rajan Parrikar which is bound to bring back many memories of happier times. Rajan says these translucent window fillers had probably a connection to the Portuguese seafaring history although procured from coastal Kerala and crafted by Pernem artisans. Another Goan reminder of the Iberian experience was the decorative scallop shells ranging from the small to the very big, once found on the altars of many Goan homes as common as the St Sebastian bound-to-the-stake ivory statuettes carved from African tusks. Anyone who knows about the ancient Camino de Santiago de Compostella (St James' Way) pilgrimage to Cape Finisterre from France or Portugal or other parts of Europe to this Galacian western most part of Spain will make the connection with the several grooves of the scallop shell meeting at one end point. This shell has great significance to this ancient pilgrimage, the third most important in Christendom after Rome and Jerusalem because the martyred remains of James were buried at the Santiago cathedral after being transported by sea from Jerusalem. Not a wonder that this scallop shell famous in Europe for its religious symbolism should find a home in Portuguese Goa, a reflection of the heritage of the European mantle that Goa once proudly wore over its equally proud Hindu cultural tunic. [Goanet] ACTION SOUGHT AGAINST SCHOOL PRINCIPAL NEENA NAIK FOR BEING BJP OFFICE BEARER
Disciplinary action has today been sought against Panaji based Mushtifund Saunstha open school Principal Mrs. Neena Naik for being in violation of law the Vice President of the Goa BJP State Executive Committee besides a member on the National executive of the BJP Mahila Morcha. In a complaint lodged with the Chief Secretary of Goa, immediate action has been demanded against Neena Naik for being actively involved with a political party while continuing to be a Principal of an educational institution in rank violation of a Bombay High Court order. . The Bombay High Court had ruled that academic institutions are required to be kept way from politics. The High Court had clearly ruled that a person in employment of an educational institution was required not to have any political association or connection whatsoever while in service. The Chief Secretary’s attention has been drawn that the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court comprising of Justice P.B.Majumdar and Justice P.B.Varale while dismissing a petition filed by a teacher Mr. Shrikant Pande who was the head of the BJP unit at Umred in Nagpur, had ruled that a teacher’s role is to impart education to students in an impartial manner and that if a teacher is actively associated with any political party it may hamper the educational atmosphere of a school. While ruling that education should be kept away from politics, the High Court has held that the educational field should not be allowed to be polluted in any manner by bringing in politics. The Goa Government is duty bound to comply with all Court directives. Just because Neena Naik happens to be a close confidante of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar she cannot be allowed to blatantly violate the law. The Chief Secretary has been also urged to direct the Vigilance department to crack the whip and act against all other staff of educational institutions in the State who are illegally involved and connected with any political party.
