Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, who has carried out more heart transplants than anyone else, said the benefits of taking the controversial drugs ‘massively’ outweigh the risks and to not make them more widely available is ‘lunacy’. Sir Magdi, professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Imperial College London, also believes statins should be available without a prescription. Statins are the most-widely prescribed drugs in Britain and are credited with saving thousands of lives a year by preventing heart attacks and strokes. But a row is raging about their side-effects. A report published in the British Medical Journal said the cholesterol-lowering drugs, taken by eight million Britons, cause side-effects such as liver and kidney disease and diabetes in one in five patients. Parts of the article were withdrawn last week, following repeated criticism from an Oxford University academic that the risks had been exaggerated up to 20-fold. Sir Rory Collins said the figure is one in 100 and described the published claims as a ‘huge error’ that will ‘cause unnecessary deaths’ by discouraging patients from taking the medicine. Now, Sir Magdi has said that stopping taking the drugs would be disastrous. He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Saturday that he found the row very upsetting, adding: ‘It is almost certainly going to result in people not taking statins and that is a major worry to many of us because the evidence is overwhelming, the lower the cholesterol, the healthier you are and the longer you will live. ‘Not only that, it prevents heart attacks and strokes but also cancer, dementia. So not to take statins is a disaster.’ He then called for the drugs to be easier to access – and for more people to take them. Sir Magdi said he believed statins should be available from chemists without prescription and that everyone over 40 should take them. He said that side-effects pale into insignificance when compared with the benefits and ‘not to make use of what we have is lunacy’. Statins are the most-widely prescribed drugs in Britain and are credited with saving thousands of lives a year by preventing heart attacks and stroke Sir Magdi said: ‘The drug has been around for 25 years or so and we do know the long-term results and exactly what it does biochemically. ‘We know exactly how to monitor any complications which are very minor compared to the benefits so I don’t see the problem.’ Currently, the prescription of statins is based on health, rather than age, with anyone judged to have a 20 per cent risk of a heart attack in the next decade offered them. But millions more could soon take the pills, as the cut-off is expected to be lowered to 10 per cent. Some doctors have questioned the mass-medication of essentially healthy people and say there are better ways of spending NHS money. Dr Mike Knapton, a GP and associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: ‘I am not sure we are yet in a position where everybody over a certain age should be prescribed a statin. ‘Even if in theory it would have public health benefits it could turn life into a disease.
[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 6th Sunday of Easter
19-May-2014 Dear Friend, To say I love you! is easy. To really mean: I love you! in the words of Dostoevsky, is as hard as hell. Part of the explanation for it being hard is that if we love, we don't do what we feel like doing but obey the commands and wishes of our beloved. This applies to our relations with other people and with God. We cannot truly love and remain in love unless we are filled with the Spirit of love, which God promises to those who believe. May His Word challenge us and fill us with hope. Have a Spirit-filled weekend! -Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Sixth Sunday of Easter 'The Spirit of love, life and hope!' 25-May-2014 Readings: Acts 8: 5-8, 14-17; 1 Peter 3: 15-18; John 14: 15-21; Today's first reading refers to the life of the early Church after the martyrdom of Stephen and the persecution of the Christians by Saul, because of which the believers were scattered and Philip set off to preach the gospel to the Samaritans. Because of the persecution the gospel was preached to the gentiles and the good news reaches the distant lands. Because of Philip's preaching, many cripples were cured and the people received the Holy Spirit. The response of the Jerusalem Church at the good news in Samaria is to praise God that his Spirit is given to all people, even those outside Jerusalem. God's Spirit knows no boundaries. Believing in the Power On the banks of a river lived a hermit. He sustained his life only on cow's milk which was supplied by an eleven-year old girl, living on the other bank of the river. One day her mother said to her, There are heavy clouds and there is going to be a downpour and the river will be flooded. Tell the hermit that you won't be able to supply milk to him tomorrow. The girl did so. The hermit said to the girl. Don't worry about the flood. I will teach you a 'mantra' and you will be able to walk on the water. Close your eyes and repeat 'Krishna, Krishna, Krishna' and you can comfortably walk on water. As expected the rain came in torrents and the river was in spate. The girl got ready to take milk to the hermit. The mother refused. But the girl persisted and told her that the hermit had given her a 'mantra' to walk on water. Believing her the mother allowed her to go. The girl went to the river, closed her eyes, repeated 'Krishna, Krishna, Krishna' and walked on the water. The hermit was looking on in wonder. The hermit thought to himself. How wonderful, I enabled that girl to walk on water. I have the power. Now let me try for myself. Confidently, he stepped on the water and drowned forthwith. The young girl had tremendous faith in the mantra given by the hermit, but not the hermit himself. It is implicit faith that can do wonders in this world. G. Francis Xavier in 'The World's Best Inspiring Stories' In the Gospel Jesus reminds his disciples that he has to leave them to go back to the Father, but he is not abandoning them and leaving them to fend for themselves. I will not leave you orphans; I will come back to you. His presence is assured if we obey his commandments. If you love me you will keep my commandments. In today's world fidelity is questioned and people wonder whether one can be faithful. We are duped into believing that infidelity produces happiness. We are tempted to disregard our obligations and make either pleasure or power our new idol. But the biblical notion of love is obedience. John links loving Jesus and obeying his commandments with the presence of the Spirit, the Paraclete - the Helper. Jesus promises 'another' Paraclete, because he himself has been the first Paraclete. Now he is going away. He cannot stay 'with' them physically but he assures them of his presence 'in' them. Each time we obey we make God's spirit present in our midst. Doing What the Father Says More than ninety people conducted an all-night search for Dominic DeCarlo, an eight-year-old boy lost on a snowy mountain slope. Dominic, who had been on a skiing trip with his father, apparently, had ridden on a new lift and skied off the run without realizing it. An hour passed, the search party and the boy's family became more concerned for his health and safety. By dawn they had found no trace of the boy. Two helicopter crews joined the search and within fifteen minutes they spotted ski tracks. A ground team followed the tracks, which changed to small footprints. The footprints led to a tree, where they found the boy at last. He's in super shape! Sergeant Terry Silbaugh, area search and rescue coordinator announced to the anxious family and press. In fact, he's in better shape than we are in right now! Silbaugh explained why the boy did so well despite spending a night in the freezing elements. His father had enough foresight to warn the boy what to do if he became lost, and his son had enough trust to do exactly what the father said. Dominic protected himself from frostbite and hypothermia by

In fact GSRP has said it in its 'Road Map for Goa' in its Chapters on 'Education' and 'Industries'. While suggesting total Autonomy to the Goa University with removal of Political influence in its working, GSRP has suggested a single window clearance for Industries in Goa, laying stress on SERVICE INDUSTRIES and suggesting gradual phase-out of polluting/manufacturing industries to make Goa the green utopia of the world where tie-ups with all the world leading Universities for exchange can take place to the satisfaction of all. Goa's work force is not the rag-tag industrial work force. By getting manufacturing industries in Goa, we are importing migrant labour and giving them the voting rights. [Goanet] THE 2014 LOK SABHA VERDICT
The results of 2014 Lok Sabha elections which took NDA tally to a galloping record 336 seats must have even surprised and stunned Narendra Modi himself. With this clear mandate the BJP can now start delivering on the mountain of promises made. With no political compulsions and tantrums of coalition partners to worry about, Narendra Modi will have no excuse in not kindling the promised socio-economic transformation of the country that he so aggressively assured. These elections may have seen a record number of 61 women elected as MPs. But on the flip aside, despite the nation’s mood being against law breakers becoming law makers their numbers are up even this time around. Every third of the newly-elected MP of this Lok Sabha has a criminal background. 98 of 281 BJP winners have criminal cases pending against them as also eight of the 44 Congress, six of 37 from AIADMK, 15 of the Shiv Sena’s 18 and seven of Trinamool Congress’s 34. A very shoddy record. For India to win Narendra Modi as Prime Minister would now have to keep a safe distance from the RSS. He would have to ensure that independence and sanctity of constitutional authorities is not breached. Judiciary should be absolutely free from any political overreach. As part of good governance politicians should not be rewarded with retirement postings and deployed as Governors. A sturdy and independent minded Lokpal should be Narendra Modi’s priority. To ensure transparency and accountability, the government should strengthen the Right to Information Act and ensure its proper implementation. While Congress Party kept grappling with scams that kept tumbling, the BJP’s 2014 election campaign commenced well two years ahead with Narendra Modi having toured entire nation much before even elections were announced. Despite being in Opposition BJP surprisingly had thousands of crores to spend over last two years on all those rallies held across the country in the run up to these elections. A conducive and friendly media on its side was also of immense help. Besides running a professionally managed high tech campaign, BJP strategically worked out alliances with every possible fringe party well in advance. They went all out leaving no opportunity missed. Even corruption tainted Karnataka’s BS Yedyurappa was admitted into the party. The Congress on the other hand was wriggling and cribbing with its alliance partners till eve of filing nominations. The now decimated Congress Party may take a while to recover, if it ever does, from its current comatose state. The party would have to reinvent itself and re-build its base from scratch if it hopes to exist. In this 543 member Lok Sabha there may be just over 200 MPs in the Opposition, but irony and matter of concern for well being of our democracy is that no party has required number of MPs to stake claim for coveted and crucial post of Leader of Opposition. Like elsewhere in the country, in Goa too the BJP was well geared in election mode two years ago. The names of both their party candidates were known well ahead. In North Goa, the sitting MP Shripad Naik contested the fourth time while South Goa candidate Narendra Sawaikar was advantageously two years ago appointed as Chairman of Goa Law Commission with cabinet status enabling him get public exposure and State sponsored perks and privileges with an eye at these elections. On the other hand the Congress Party known for its chaotic and factional ridden functioning announced its candidates on the eve of filing nominations. Despite this South Goa Congress candidate Reginald Lourenco polled a whopping 166466 votes. The entire overall credit is due to the Independent Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardessai who skillfully steered the campaign after most of the Congress leaders either jumped ship or buried their heads deep into the sand. Congress rebels Churchill Alemao and Shalom Sardinha were fielded with a one point agenda to defeat Reginald Lourenco. Inspite of this and the Congress Party block organizational set up in shambles, Reginald Lourenco ensured that in Navelim, Nuvem, Benaulim and Velim assembly constituencies the BJP supporting altar boy MLAs failed to take a lead which ended up with BJP’s Narendra Sawaikar win by a margin of mere 32,230 votes. In North Goa BJP’s Shripad Naik with a lead of over a lakh votes his victory was very decisive. Congress’s fumbling Ravi Naik in his lackluster campaign did not reach out to the voters while Congress rebel former Minister Dayanand Narvekar sealed his political coffin being bowled out after polling a paltry 4128 votes. Despite all hype, Aam Aadmi Party as expected did not cut much ice. That over 1 Goans who perhaps were disillusioned with Congress and BJP opted for NOTA says it all. Now that BJP has unequivocal mandate the delivering on the promise of good governance should forthwith begin. All through the election campaign and after his party’s landslide victory Narendra Modi kept
[Goanet] Some thoughts on India's elections
The BJP won 31% of the national vote, so its mandate should be understood against the backdrop that 69% of the country did not vote for the party. It won with the rules in place, but a landslide should at least be a simple majority (over 50%). A sizable part of the vote for the BJP seems to be a vote against the Congress, not necessarily for the BJP. Congress deserved to lose considering its poor governance and rampant corruption. The Congress party will probably not learn from its failure and continue to saddle itself with dynastic politics. India does not need Prime Minister Priyanka Gandhi and the family must go so democracy can flourish in India (same problem with the Bushes and Clintons in the USA). Corruption will not go away. The BJP can at best offer some token chemo and radiation, but the cancer is Stage 4. It is a myth that the BJP is less corrupt than the Congress and more communal. They are two sides of the same shared coin, both have corrupt and communal elements. In the last Assembly elections in Goa in March 2012, the BJP candidates had MORE criminal issues than the Congress candidates (per their disclosure statements). Modi will not shake off his communal agenda easily, assuming he even wants to. The Supreme Court gave him a clean legal chit for the riots but as Chief Minister he should have resigned. There is moral responsibility while being in charge, something politicians (and CEO's) do not always care about. The vast majority of his RSS rank and file is pro-Hindu and nationalist (as narrowly defined by them). There is nothing wrong with being pro-Hindu, there is something wrong with being anti-Muslim and anti-Christian at the same time. Fortunately, elections in five years will temper this part of his party's agenda as he looks to be re-elected. Freedoms in the constitution are meant for all. We will see what transpires. Governments come and go. Modi should seize his opportunity now to lead the country, not just his party. He lost an opportunity at statesmanship after the election when his remarks focused on himself and his party's success. The issue is India. India must win in the end, not the BJP or Congress or AIDMK. The poor must win too. All this talk of development is code for corporate benefits. Like the USA, recent economic gains have gone to the rich at the expense of the middle class and poor. So a legitimate question is development for whom? If only for corporates, then NO to this kind of development. Unless the poor win, we all lose. This is a huge worldwide issue and Modi is not the only world leader who should be judged in this manner. Around the globe, economic inequality is growing, not shrinking. And then, unfortunately, violent revolutions follow. Only a few in history are afforded the privilege to lead a billon plus people in a democracy (China by its political structure is a failure - communists are in charge). It is a tall order to rise above class, caste, corruption, and communalism. But there is no bigger stage in the world (perhaps except for the White House) and Modi must remember his nation's anthem - play it every day as he awakes lest he forgets what it stands for. One can only wish him well now. India must be granted its euphoria at the latest electoral change. A great country with an incredible cultural and social mix has only two tests to judge success: 1. Will democracy work for its 700+ million poor people? 2. Will democracy work for its 600 million girls/women? The rest is minor details. Time will tell if India won or lost. George

[Goanet] Osborn Viegas :: Re The continuing saga over Selma Carvalho's highly acclaimed book
From: Osborn Viegas profvie...@hotmail.com To: goanet@lists.goanet.org goanet@lists.goanet.org Date: Mon, 19 May 2014 08:02:42 + The Editorial Board Goanet Dear Sir/Madam, Subject: Re: [Goanet] The continuing saga over Selma Carvalho's highly acclaimed book Would you please consider stopping this seemingly endless thread, In my view, it has merely exposed a level of bigotry and literary dysfunction that transgress any editorial etiquette and are far from desirable. I am aware that only a small handful of correspondents have misused editorial privileges in this way but it does nothing to enhance the face of the Goan Community at large. At a time when the Community is gloating over the successful production of a collection of memoirs, such in-house bickering is totally counterproductive. Regardless of the merits or demerits of Selma's book, it is only correct that we uphold editorial integrity and shun any personal and other slights that have emerged. I have no intention in being drawn into further correspondence on this matter but hope that this academic perspective is of help. Thank you Professor Osborn Viegas AM, MBChB, MD(Birm), FRCOG, FRANZCOG, DA(Irl) Retired Professor of Obstetrics Gynaecology, Monash University SINGAPORE [MODERATOR'S NOTE: Please trim the earlier message before replying to it.]

-- Forwarded message -- From: Xavier Centre Of Historical Research xchr.eve...@gmail.com Date: 19 May 2014 16:56 Subject: To: Xavier Centre Of Historical Research i...@xchr.in Dear Friends, On behalf of the Goa Jesuits, XCHR and PAI, Raia are organising a Seminar-cum-Heritage tour on May 22-23, 2014 titled *Closure of Existing Paths and Opening up of New Avenues: Historical Explorations of the Society of Jesus in Western India, 18th-20th c. *This seminar is to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus. Nearly 130 Jesuit priests and brothers from different parts of India are expected to attend the seminar. The concept note is given below to explain what the seminar is all about. The entire schedule is also attached for your information. *Concept Note* The Society of Jesus commemorates this year the 200th anniversary of its restoration. The Society, which was suppressed by Pope Clement XIV on 21 July 1773 by the Brief '*Dominus ac Redemptor*', was restored only on 7 August 1814 by Pope Pius VII through the Bull '*Sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum*'. But in the Goa Jesuit Province (the third oldest province in the Society after Portugal and Spain), the Jesuits were evicted on the orders of the Portuguese Prime Minister, the Marquis of Pombal in 1759, fourteen years before the worldwide suppression of the Society of Jesus. What were the ramifications for the society at large and for the Jesuits in particular, of these two very important events in the history of the Jesuits, namely, the Suppression and the Restoration? Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, has invited all the Jesuits to reflect on this anniversary in the following words: Each important date on the calendar is an opportunity to reflect and learn. We can be thankful for what we have received, remember how much we have discovered, improve our way of being servants of the Lord's mission, and repent if necessary for falling short of the mark. It is with this spirit of reflecting and learning that this seminar-cum-heritage tour seeks to address the closure of the then existing paths of the Society through the Suppression event and recall with gratitude the opening of new avenues through the Restoration. This seminar will focus specifically on the trajectories that the restored Society in Western India has taken till date, so that we can learn from history and improve our role of being Companions of Jesus involved in the salvation history of humankind. -- *Xavier Centre of Historical Research* B B Borkar Road, Alto Porvorim, Goa 403521, India.
