[Goanet] UK - Goan Cattle Market 2014 (Response to Frederick)

2014-08-28 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
Dear Frederick

The message of my article was not about a "class war" or "diversity".

It is time for all of us to acknowledge the dropping of our Goykar standards
here in the UK to such an extent that for the first time in 40 years our entire
community has been put under the spotlight of statutory authorities.  In this
particular case, the health and safety officials who were visibly present at
the occasion to make sure everyone adhered to minimum standards in regards to
food, hygiene and health and safety issues.   This may have occured because
there was a demand on the National Health Service last year dealing with food
poisioning.   Legislators in the UK legislate for the public good and laws in
the statutory books have to be complied with.

Goanet readers, including yourself, may be aware of a case in Goa where school
children were fed contaminated food resulting with casualties.   Has there been
any update on this.

There was also a high level of security at Cranford to make sure our people
were kept safe from each other!

I am not aware of any prejudice with our language "Konkani" between the Kenya
Goans and new arrivals.  Konkani is our language and all of us out of Goa have
the opportunity to embrace it through World Goa Day, tiatrs and music. The only
difference I find is those of us from Africa who as youngsters were denied
speaking our language can only speak it at 45 rpm whilst new arrivals from Goa
speak at between 76 - 90 rpm.

Whilst growing up in Kenya I was told that Goa was Bardez and Salcette.   In
the 1980s when I edited the Goan Association UK newsletter along with a team of
dedicated volunteers (which had a print run of well over 1,000) my research
showed that this was not the case and Goa had over 240 districts (Word has it
that a complete set of these handcrafted newsletters are in the archives of
Toronto University).   Today, for tourist and government purposes and including
definitions from new arrivals this is now referred to as North Goa and South
Goa.   In the Wembley area each year there is a football match between North
Goa and South Goa normally in August.

My issue with the cattle market is that it is a type of social engineering
where I hear a child, a Goan customer of tomorrow, has had their crisp packet
confiscated at the gate.   What will this child and their parents feel?   Is
this a another creative method of harvesting income forcing responsible parents
into a queue to purchase crisps and other items for children that may not even
be available.

After the above event, as I said before, there was a blizzard of enquiries
where the money was going.   Seriously every remaining member of the GOA UK
should attend the Statutory Accountants General Meeting (AGM) and question such
important issues.   What I am seeing is a further dismantling or non adherence
of the constitution of a once well oiled administrative system taking all of us
40 years back when we were not organised and if someone wanted to buy a sofa
set, colour television or holiday they just "brought up" a dance.   Today there
are several miscellaneous functions taking place with no accountability but
providing a venue to meet.

You are right, times are changing but none of us should be proud of the
numerous articles appearing in on-line papers of the way our people are
behaving with their constant clashes with the police and other authorities
bringing shame to our once good Goan name.

[Goanet] NO ACCHE DIN FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH

2014-08-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Are the dark days of the 1975 Emergency once again looming large?

In times when sadly most of the media is gagged or manipulated by the
government of the day, it is the social networking sites like Face book and
Twitter that provides you a forum to fearlessly express your thoughts and
views on any issue.

On Face book I have been a member of 120 groups some of which are Goa
related and others connected with the legal arena on which I have been
posting my views and opinions on various issues. Though my posts are not
sugar coated as many would have liked, I always post only after
ascertaining the facts. Anyone who differs is free to express his own
viewpoint and incase I may have erred I would be more than pleased to most
humbly stand corrected.

Surprisingly from last evening while posting on any of these groups I get a
message saying "You have been temporarily blocked from performing this
action”. I can suspect this to be the handiwork at the instance of two
monsters occupying high positions in Goa. It would not be proper for me to
name them till I have some concrete evidence to that effect.

So at the moment I can only post on my timeline which would only reach my
4999 friends. Have written to Face book last night and awaiting to hear
from them as to at whose instance my freedom of speech and expression has
been curtailed.

Till the situation is rectified may I request you to kindly forward to
other groups and share any of my posts you deem fit so that this
high-handed attempt to muzzle our voice is at least to some extent thwarted.

This morning it was paying the last respects to my school teacher Mrs.
Bhavana Kholkar who passed away last evening. My teacher was very brave and
outspoken. Never ever minced words in all that she had to say. In her
little way she would always stand up against injustice and all that was
wrong.

Thank you Teacher, for showing me the way.

[Goanet] The name of Sant Sohirobanath

2014-08-28 Thread Amita Kanekar
*The Name of Sant Sohirobanath*

Amita Kanekar

The recent renaming of the Government College of Pernem, as the Sant
Sohirobanath Ambiye College of Art and Commerce, throws up several issues.
Jason Keith Fernandes discussed some a few days ago ('Sant Sohirobanath and
the Secular Death'), including how this use of the name of a Hindu and
Saraswat religious figure for a government institution is both an attack on
secularism and a continuing of the hegemony of the Saraswat caste in public
spaces in Goa, thereby identifying the 'true' Goan as a Saraswat.

But that's not all. Who is this Sant Sohirobanath, in the first place? For
those like myself who had never heard of him, an exhaustive internet search
does not reveal much; a measly 600 'hits' when I first looked, which jumped
up to about 2000 a couple of days later. Most of these led to articles
talking about the renaming and the recent festival celebrating his 300th
anniversary. There were also two books of a non-scholarly and religious
type, one describing Sohirobanath as a Great Yogi and a 'leading luminary'
of the Nath Panth sect, while the other just mentions him in passing as a
Sant who on being harassed threatens the harasser that he will be burnt
alive; the threat is fulfilled. One online article speaks of two books
containing his poetry. Besides this are just few mentions in blogs on
Marathi poetry.

There is no link to any scholarly book or article on the man. As for
Wikipedia -- which is not a source of reliable information, but at least
reflective of popular understanding -- he is not mentioned anywhere on that
humongous site, not even on the pages about Hinduism, Goa, Sants, or the
Nath Panth.

Enquiries at the history department of Goa University and the Goa Central
Library reveal that there are no works of history which mention this
supposedly historical figure. All they have are some compilations of his
verses, some of which also briefly describe his life.

But what's wrong in being little known, one might ask; there must be
millions of deserving people unnamed on Wikipedia. True, but how many have
government institutions named after them? Governments name and rename
public institutions usually after people with some public standing, and for
a reason. Belatedly remembering Savitribai Phule, more than 60 years after
the Pune University was set up, reflects the need of the Maharashtra
government to display respect for this pioneering educationist from the
Bahujan Samaj, a woman who defied the gender and caste norms of her time as
well the idea - still current - that it is only the progressive elements
from the dominant castes and classes who found educational institutions.
That Maharashtra remains the land of Khairlanjis and other caste
atrocities, where Dalit and bahujan samaj women still have to fight for
education and dignity, shows that the gesture is only lip-service to the
cause.

What is the gesture being made by the Goa government in this renaming? Here
we have someone who, from all available sources, was a member of the
privileged Saraswat community who joined the religious sect called the Nath
Panth and wrote spiritual verses, in which he 'distilled the wisdom' of the
Vedas and the Upanishads.

Is this adequate qualification for a 21st-century educational institution
being named after one? Perhaps, when you look at some of ours. Not only do
most of our schools, colleges and universities fall far short of the touted
ideals of education, many already excel at pandering to Hindu religious
beliefs, with the organization of brahmanical Hindu festivals within the
campus, and upper caste Hindu religious icons permanently installed there.
And the less said about their predilection for quietly side-stepping
reservation quotas, therein further disadvantaging OBC and SC/ST
applicants, the better. This step is in fact an open admission of their
quasi-brahmanical tendencies.

And the problem is not only the lack of even-handedness. Would it be all
right if the Goa government were to name the next college after a Christian
or Muslim religious figure, or indeed a coast guard ship as the Ave
Maria-14, as they recently did? India is in fact the proof that overt
religiosity does not lead to anything very positive, for this home of 33
crore gods, along with unlimited godmen, shrines, pilgrimages, and rituals,

casteism, as Dr. Ambedkar pointed out so many years ago. But even with the
other religions, public religious symbolism tends to caricature local
religio-ethnic beliefs in a reductive manner, and strengthen the
conservative and regressive sections of the community. True secularism does

SHE IS………

Three guys (ALSU, BOSTU & CARLU) were childhood friends, as they grew up, ALSU
got a job in Bahrain, BOSTU went to London and CARLU was doing his small
business in Goa.

The three friends met after long time, when ALSU & BOSTU came down to Goa for
holidays.

One fine noon, they were sitting at Wild West Bar n Restaurant in
Curchorem-Goa, and were sipping ‘100 Pipers’ whiskey on rocks:-

ALSU: Do you’ll know something? When my wife was pregnant, she was reading a
book; A Tale of Two Cities and she gave birth to twins.

BOSTU: That’s nothing, my wife was reading The Three Musketeers and she gave
birth to triplets.

CARLU dropped his whiskey glass and started running home.

ALSU: What happened?

BOSTU: Where you are running?

ALSU & BOSTU got to CARLU’s house, they saw him burning a book:

ALSU: What you are doing?

BOSTU: Why you are burning that book?

CARLU: My wife was reading Ali Baba and The Forty Thieves and she is
pregnant……!!!
