[Goanet-News] NEWS: Pope Francis May Declare Rev. Joseph Vaz, 17th Century Priest, Sri Lanka's First Saint
Pope Francis May Declare Rev. Joseph Vaz, 17th Century Priest, Sri Lanka's First Saint By KRISHAN FRANCIS Posted: 09/12/2014 10:01 am EDT Updated: 33 minutes ago COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Pope Francis may make a 17th century priest Sri Lanka's first Roman Catholic saint during his trip next year, making good on his promise to give Asia more saints as models for the faithful, Sri Lankan and Vatican officials said Friday. Francis plans to visit the island nation Jan. 13-15 and then travel onto the Philippines to meet with survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. The archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, said he hoped that the Vatican would give final approval to the sainthood case of the Rev. Joseph Vaz so that Francis himself could celebrate the canonization Mass at Colombo's Galle Face Green. We are hopeful, Ranjith said. Vaz was born in Goa, India, in 1651 but chose to work in Sri Lanka amid persecution of Catholics by Dutch colonial rulers, who were Calvinists. Vaz is credited with having revived the Catholic faith in the country, using disguises and learning the local Sinhala and Tamil languages to meet secretly with underground Catholics. He died in 1711. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed that the final hurdle — approval of a miracle attributed to Vaz's intercession — was before the Vatican's saint-making office. It's possible that the decision of the congregation and that of the pope might come relatively quickly, so that it will be possible to celebrate the canonization during the Sri Lanka trip, he said. Ranjith said the miracle under study concerned a Sri Lankan doctor couple who, against medical advice, refused to abort one of their twins and prayed for Vaz's intercession. St. John Paul II beatified Vaz during his 1995 visit to Colombo, the first major step in his sainthood process. While visiting South Korea last month, Francis beatified 124 Korean martyrs and promised to give Asia more saints, after a young Cambodian complained her country had none. Francis is particularly keen on raising up as saints martyrs and others who fought Christian persecution, seeing them as models for Catholics today. -- Associated Press writer Nicole Winfield contributed from Rome. [Goanet] Double Decker Train at Karmali Station..
The newly introduced DD premium Ganapati Special Train was not very popular. Journey time 11 hours stopping at thane, Panvel, Chiplun, Ratnagiri and Kankavli It was full a/c chair (seating only) Bombay LTT to KRMI (Karmali) and back, on alternate days from 22nd August till 10th Sept making 10+10 trips up and down. One train was cancelled due to goods train derailment on the route. It's actual load was about 10-12% of it capacity which is around 960. One time spotted only just 5 Pax alighting at Karmali the last station and the second time only 3. Main reasons for poor response, I think, not enough publicity and fare comparatively higher, more than 3AC fare of a regular mail/express train. These types of premium trains have dynamic fare structure like that of Air Travel. Meaning, fare goes up as per demand. Lowest fare was around 1,100 but it can go upto Rs.2,000. I tried once and it was showing up 1,550. It will only show up just before you enter your payment details The fare includes taxes (around 50) and Catering charges which is around Rs.250. (Volvo a/c buses fare ranges from 700 to 1200) Food was good, according to a source (Inbound Pax). Plus free tea/coffee, welcome drinks etc Premium Trains usually get all these/ Menu like that of Duronto and Rajdhani. The train had one Pantry van and 1 or 2 Generator / Guard van (normal or STD size compartments) - see pic Other reasons could be: - Ticket only through internet and not at booking counter. - No reserve ticket like ladies quota, tatkal etc not even wait-listed tickets. No concession either. No half ticket, not even to children - Once ticket bought no refund except when the train is cancelled. - No booking through agents - There were others Ganapati special trains too on the same route or sector Looks like the DD train never came on time, always delayed by several hours (like many trains) except on it last trip it came around right time i.e. just after 4.30pm. Each compartment has 120 seats. One has to used steps (4 steps only) either to go down to lower deck or up on the upper deck Few seats also available at the entrance level. see seating plan chart pic Video - Double Decker Train https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2n4V3xIM9c pics - Double Decker https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15208349091/in/photostream https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15211412295/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024833988/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024729680/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024852577/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024855747/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024644599/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024860758/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15188425436/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15188427056/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15211453355/in/photostream/ approaching, tracks https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15188417806/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15211058812/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024657659/in/photostream/ Upper deck https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15211017722/in/photostream/ Lower deck https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024838008/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024835547/in/photostream/ Seating plan, 120 per compartment https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15211023402/in/photostream/ Pantry, generator, guard, luggage van https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15024841268/in/photostream/ see the size/height difference of normal and double decker compartment https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15211033372/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk73/15211046302/in/photostream/ video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2n4V3xIM9c blog - more pics, more trains etc at Karmali station http://joegoauk.blogspot.in/2014/08/karmali-railway-station-goa.html joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc

[Goanet] HC BARS FURTHER DIGGING OF MIRAMAR - D.PAULA ROAD
WHAT IS ESSENTIAL? Panjimites have received breaking news today (11.9.2014) evening as the HC bars further digging of Miramar- D.Paula road unless essential. Everybody knows that this digging is going on without proper planning with any kind of maps available in these dept of PWD, CCP, Electricity Dept, and Telephone Dept including GSIDC. The worse part is that the GSIDC has tendered this work during monsoon which is completely a wrong decision and planning. Many accidents have occurred during the digging work. Many complaints were addressed but still digging was going on in full swing and haphazard manner. The Press had also done enough publicity about these bad roads. Residents have seen many underground cabling damaged by the contractor’s workers and with their JCB’s on EHT, HT, telephones, and underground cablings and water piping because no plans or any maps are available for execution of the project. Hopefully there is a relief now given to the residents by the HC to the above concerned authorities who have to furnish justifications to the High Court before resuming the project of road digging from D.Paula to Miramar. Stephen Dias Senior Citizen and Resident of D.Paula

[Goanet] GOA CANNOT GO THE ATMARAM WAY
Despite the fact that the Goa Government has almost two football teams of Government Advocates in the High Court, seldom can they be seen addressing the Court on merits of any matter. Except for one or two, the rest merely occupy the front row and flock around Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni and rest like candle-stands awaiting His Master's diktats. The Goa government pays Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni over a crore a year and further lakhs of rupees are squandered on the government advocates most of whom are only good for seeking adjournments. Dattaprasad Lawande who is a close relative of Atmaram Nadkarni besides being the Government Advocate in the High Court and also the Additional Public Prosecutor was recently further crowned as Assistant Solicitor General (ASG) to defend the Central government before the High Court. As to how Narendra Modi allowed this manipulation apparently by Atmaram Nadkarni in connivance with Manohar Parrikar is a big question. Dattaprasad Lawande as Additional Public Prosecutor itself gets a flat salary of one lakh a month though he rarely appears in any criminal matter. Besides further pocketing a bumper as the Government Advocate he now also additionally milks the exchequer as the Assistant Solicitor General. All these titles are ornamental just to draw in the huge moolah but all he does is be a very obedient page boy of his relative Atmaram Nadkarni at all times who does all the talking and the scribbling. In all other states the Advocate General appears only in important and Constitutional matters while the other government advocates take care of other matters. But in Goa Atmaram Nadkarni appears in almost every matter as he pockets Rs 10,000 every time he stands up in the High Court. His battalion of over twenty advocates stand up only to adjourn matters and that is what they are possibly only trained for. The very knowledgeable and extremely dignified Government Advocate Amey Kakodkar decided to put in his papers possibly for not being able to cope up and submit to Atmaram Nadkarni’s manipulation and tantriks. The other experienced hand Manish Salkar is hardly assigned any cases as it is the Writ of Atmaram Nadkarni that prevails. Are we heading for the old adage My ship, My order? [Goanet] OPEN LETTER TO CHIEF MINISTER MANOHAR PARRIKAR
Dear Manohar Parrikar, Hon CM You must be receiving several open letters from me in different topics especially pertaining to the City of Panjim where you are a MLA of Panjim, and that I write in the interest of Panjimites only and in public interest. But I suppose, you never respond my letters , reasons are best known to you, or probably you are a busy politician. Again today is an another letter to you, and that is for the purpose of PAY PARKING in the CITY. Today's (12.9.2014) news are published in various section of Press which says that the Pay parking will be implemented once Sanjit Rodrigues, Commissioner of CCP resumes work after his leave and that the order may likely be implemented by 18th of this month. Fine, we are all aware that there is a big problem for parking in the city and that you have not done so far anything to solve the woes of motorists and the people of Panjim who wants to park their vehicles in the city without any difficulties. There was hue and cry from the establishments and shops owners that their vehicles might have to be shifted somewhere else once the Pay Parking Order is implemented at designated areas such as Church Square , 18th June Road and Cafe Bhonsole area , Panjim Market etc. The contract has already been finalized I suppose, and approved by the CCP but only awaits its order to be implemented. These shops keepers were used to park their own vehicles near their adjacent establishment/shops for hours together and even 24 hours which were blocking or not available for others vehicles to park in the roads. Present decision appears to be a good one, and there will be a good relief for public to park their vehicles after making payment I suppose. What will happen when CCP wants to have a change on Pay Parking rules? Will the Contractor accept it? Whether there is any clause in the order to take it back or if any modification needed to be done if any? Contractor might go to Court and the case will go on for years and the public may suffer. What was needed is that the order may be taken care as the situation arises so that other new Commissioner or next MLA implements another decision. Whether the Mayor and CCP Commissioner have realized if such problems occurs? Also there is a plan for the Panjim going for a facelift and whether this order will come in its way? MLA of Panjim Manohar Parrikar who is also holding the post of Chief Minster will he realize that such problems may crop up? And whether he has given his assent or approval to CCP for this Pay parking? Stephen Dias D.Paula. Re: [Goanet] dual citizenship
Since the legal stake in the Caitu case has fallen again, it remains to be seen how the Parrikar will react and what it will do to save the four people, including two MLAs, Caitu and Glen Ticklo. I hope Adv Radharao Gracias who, I believe, is a lawyer for Churchill in a legal case by Caitu's PA against Churchill, should argue in court on the merits of the Portuguese passports and, by extension, of those who registered their births in Portugal, as the case alleges against Churchill, in the light of what he has written in today OHeraldo. I, for one, wish that a final settlement to this perplexing issue is found. The game is peaking and let's see how the scoreline reads in the end. Eugene

Re: [Goanet] The Paper, and either we are Indians first or Goans first.
So far there has been no answer to my query as to who, besides Frank Moraes, were Goans who reached the very top. in Times of India. Remember, the essay in the book, Bombaicar, said many Goan reporters at The Times of India married daughter of Bombay aunties. Remember about the part where a section of Toronto women were shown in bad light. Since these sort of statements goes with being challenged, it shows that the majority don't care. When the Toronto women piece came, one ex-Africander who has been very active in the GOA asked me who the writer was and said that if he knew him he would give him hell. Some women who spoke to me also seemed very angry and wanted to know what if the writer has done any meaningful or academic research. The mailing lists and FB pages are there to voice one's opinions, however good or bad the opinions are. Just one poster on FB said that I was shithead and rogue journalist because of my contrary views to his and his ilk on the Liberation/Annexation debate. The person is from the group, which I have termed pervasive class of Goans, who are blatantly pro-Portuguese and rabid anti-Indian. These people have the favourite website which promotes anti-Indian hatred. Today's piece my Adv. Radharao Gracias, who is also member of Goanet, questions calling oneself Indian first and Goan later. Many non-Indians ask Indian-looking if they are Indians and rarely they ask if you are Maharashtrian or Goan. Radharao admits that India was one as a landmass in pre-historical times. The Portuguese interlude was just another period in Goa's history, which he has elaborated. The debate of Liberation/Annexation is good for academic analyses of Goa's historiography. Now that I am Canadian citizen, I say I am Canadian of Indian-origin. When asked further to define my identity I say I am Goan but Bombay-born and Bombay-educated. I am, however, an Overseas Citizen of India, and carry the OCI with me when I travel. No point in splitting legal hair over the issue. This issue now belongs in the domain of International Jurisprudence. Raddharao's UDGP has now been pushed to the fringe of Goan political landscape, while Floriano Lobo's GSRP has been hovering on the political horizen for about 14 years. Time to shed off this mentality, and play constuctive role in making Goa a new society. A generation of Goans have come and almost gone, and a newer one is rising. Eugene Correia
[Goanet] NEWS: Pope Francis May Declare Rev.
