ABSTRACT: Indian writing in English has flourished considerably. It reveals
the multifaceted culture of India. Goan writers in English have added a
distinctive tone to Modern Indian literature in English. Goan English
literature is fast emerging in the last two decades. It has created a niche
if not a big, albeit a small place in Indian writing in English. However,
Goan writers in diaspora are known internationally. The representations of
the local colour continue emerging in Goan fiction in English. It has not
received serious and sustained scholarly attention. To my knowledge no
study of local color in Goan fiction in English exists. The objective of
this paper is to examine the local colour in Savia Viegas’ novel *Let Me
Tell You About Quinta*. It lays out the theoretical lines pursued in the
paper. In light of characteristics of the local colour literature, the
novel is analyzed. It is concluded that the novel is written within the
framework of identified realism. There is a regional consciousness. The
novel is rich in local colour. The sociological and anthropological
elements in Savia Viegas’ fiction could also be considered as part of her
aesthetic. My approach is based on the accepted constitution of ‘Local
colour fiction’ in the making of fiction and not a social document.
Key words: Fictional world, local colour, realism, regional consciousness,
Viegas.

[Goanet-News] DEBATE: Inculturation -- searching for an Indian identity for the Church

2014-09-18 Thread Goanet Reader
By Eduardo Faleiro
lokseva...@gmail.com

An eminent Goan celebrated his 100th birth anniversary on
September 17, 2014. Lambert Mascarenhas edited in Mumbai the
*Goan Tribune*, a fortnightly dedicated to the cause of Goan
Liberation. During a visit to Goa he was arrested and jailed
by the colonial Government. He was then expelled from Goa.

After Liberation he became the Editor of the *Navhind Times*
and later founded and edited *Goa Today*. He has authored
several books including the classic novel *Sorrowing Lies my
Land*. Prof. Francisco Correia Afonso whilst reviewing it
in 1962 said, This beautiful book produced by Lambert
Mascarenhas in a land then foreign, during the period of his
exile, has now reached Goa along with the Indian troops that
brought us freedom. Lambert Mascarenhas is a recipient of
several awards including the Laxmidas Borkar Memorial Award
for Journalism and Goa’s highest civilian award, the Gomant Vibushan.

One of the subjects Lambert Mascarenhas dealt with was the
need to restructure Goan Christian life. In an article,
published in the Saligao Seminary Souvenir of 2003, he wrote:
The Western bias of Goan Christianity has now to be
eradicated, the proclivity that has bestowed on the people a
sense of superiority and unindianess... This sense is
generated by the erroneous concept of 'civilization' which
according to them is represented by Christianity: knife and
fork at the table, frock-hat and suits and the consumption of
liquor The Church in Goa must now act to dilute the
westernization of its flock. As far as possible, Goan
Christians must not appear different from the Hindus of Goa.

The views of Lambert Mascarenhas find resonance in
the stated position of the Catholic Church on
inculturation. Inculturation is the process by
which a particular Church expresses its faith
  through the local culture.

In India the purpose is to make the Church authentically
Indian and genuinely Christian. The Federation of Asian
Bishops Conferences (FABC) is the most influential body in
the Asian Church. It is a transnational episcopal structure
that brings together Bishops Conferences of 18 Asian
countries including India and has associate members from 10
other countries. Thus, 28 Asian countries are represented at
the FABC.

An FABC statement made more than three decades ago expresses
their insight: The decisive new phenomenon for Christianity
in Asia will be the emergence of genuine Christian
communities -- Asian in their way of thinking, praying and
living.

Reflecting on the question of inculturation, the Catholic
Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) at its general meeting in
Kolkata in 1974 solemnly declared: The Church in India must
realize her genuine Indian identity and rid herself of the
slur of being foreign which clings to her because of leaning
too heavily on foreign support and the style adopted by some
of the Christian communities. The Church will realize her
Indian identity by adapting herself to the conditions
prevailing in the country and developing an indigenous
theology.

In 1991, the FABC Theological Consultation stated: As a
social institution the Church is perceived as a foreign body
in its colonial origins whilst other world religions are not.
The lingering colonial image survives. The Church is even
sometimes seen as an obstacle or threat to national
integration and religious identity... The Church remains
foreign in its lifestyle, in its institutional structure, in
its worship, in its western trained leadership and in its
theology. Christian rituals often remain formal, neither
spontaneous nor particularly Asian.

At the Asian Synod of 1998, the Asian Bishops called for
divesting the Western image of the Church in the liturgy,
style of life, celebrations and trying to overcome the
present image of a powerful, affluent and domineering
institution.

Inculturation was the basic nature of Indian Christianity
long before the West arrived here. Christianity was
introduced in India around AD 52. This is when Thomas, the
Apostle, is believed to have come to Malankara in Kerala.

Thomas established a Church which was culturally Indian in
every way. Raimon Panikkar, renowned Spanish Roman Catholic
priest and professor at the University of Madrid and at the
Harvard Divinity School called for an advaitic Christianity
in India. Christianity ought to become one more Indian sect
such as Jainism and Sikhism seeking union with God through
Jesus and yet with an undisturbed fidelity to the culture and
lifestyle of the land. Much of the West has already
understood the value of Indian spirituality. It won't be
long before Indian Christians do likewise and take back their
own heritage with pleasure and gratitude.

Most Goan theologians concur on the need for inculturation.
Rev. Vasco do Rego, a pioneer of inculturation in Goa notes
Jesus was born a Jew and lived fully the socio cultural
Jewish life. He never sought

Those clamouring for referendum in Goa must join separatist groups of
Catalans, South Broleans, Corsicans, bretons, Frisians and Finland Swedes

Those in favour of Goa separating from India, particularly the pro-Portuege

[Goanet] The Goan Hand in an Unfinished Mission: A Jesuit Letter to a Former Student

2014-09-18 Thread Goanet Reader
The Goan Hand in an Unfinished Mission
--
A Jesuit Letter to a Former Student

Dear Fr. Jose Vaz,

We rejoice with the rest of Goa at last night's
news of your canonization, but as Jesuits we are
particularly proud of you as our former student,
and happy for whatever we contributed to your
  growth and apostolate.

It was the Jesuit parish priest of Benaulim, Fr. Jacinto
Pereira, who made you a child of God through Baptism on April
29, 1651. After a couple of years, you learnt to read and
write under another Jesuit Father in Sancoale and then Latin
in our school in Benaulim. Finally, you went to our St.
Paul's College in Old Goa for your higher secondary education
to learn rhetoric and the humanities.

I wonder what made you leave the Jesuits and go to the
Dominican Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas for your seminary
studies. Was it that you did not come up to their admission
requirements? Those Jesuits at St. Paul's could be rather
selective, I am told. But I am glad we kept up our
friendship.

During your seminary days at Old Goa, did you meet
the Jesuit martyr Sao Joao de Brito? He came there
from Portugal to complete his theological studies.
You must have surely noticed the big excitement
with music and decorated streets when on September
6, 1673 he and his seven companions came to the new
St. Paul's College, not far from St. Anthony's
  Chapel were you lived.

Your dream of going to Sri Lanka, in spite of the mortal
dangers awaiting you there, was fully supported by your
Jesuit friends. They welcomed you in their house in Quilon,
where Fr. Manuel Pereira would later teach Tamil to those
going to join you, and furnished you with much useful
information. They, then, sent you disguised as a coolie to
their house in Tuticorin in March 1687. You will remember
that here you met a Jesuit friend whom you had known in Goa.
Wasn't it he who helped you and your servant John to cross
over to Sri Lanka after Easter that year, disguised as you
were for the fear of the Dutch?

In Sri Lanka you could build on the foundation laid earlier
by Jesuit missionaries and use chapels and houses they had
built but had to abandon after the Dutch occupation in 1662.
It was through the Jesuits that your letters, smuggled out of
the country, were conveyed to Goa.

Wasn't it due to the reports of your good work that Fr.
Andrew Freyre, the Jesuit Provincial of Malabar, sent to his
fellow Jesuits in Goa that the ecclesiastical authorities
there finally approved the Oratorian Congregation that you
had helped to start? In 1703 the Jesuit parish priest Fr.
Henry Dolu at Pondicherry tried to support you before the
Papal Legate, Archbishop Carl Thomas Maillard of Tournon,
whom Pope Clement XI had sent to settle some affairs relating
to your work.

During your school days with the Jesuits you must
have heard about another Jesuit missionary at
Madurai who had died in 1656, Fr Roberto de Nobili.
He was in trouble with local church authorities
because of his attempts at inculturation and now it
was your turn that the poor European Archbishop
  could not understand.

He did admire your work but his decision was similar to the
one he had taken regarding the Malabar rites and even the
Archbishop of Goa considered it ruinous for the Mission.
But you accepted it graciously and promulgated it with much
prudence. No wonder, therefore, that already in 1690 Fr.
Andrew Freyre had reported to the Viceroy of Goa that you had
worked in the district of Jaffnapatam with apostolic spirit
and zeal and that you were held by all to be a saint.

I wouldn't be surprised if that statement helped to hasten
the process of your canonization -- by a Jesuit Pope! At any
rate, it was the Jesuit Bishop of Cochin Dom Francisco de
Vasconcellos, who had proposed to the Holy See in about 1737
to initiate the process of your beatification. The process
was in fact begun in Goa, and a number of miracles were
registered. But the non-fulfilment of certain essential
formalities led Pope Benedict XIV to cancel the proceedings,
with an order, however, that they should be re-instituted.
But that did not matter to you, because you were already
blessed and crowned by your Divine Master.

Dear Fr. Jose Vaz, the Church needs people like you
today: full of love for Christ, generous, creative,
and committed. Pray that we have them and also
pray for us, Jesuits of Goa, who at one time helped
you to become what you were and to do what you did
  for Christ.

Yours fraternally in Christ,

Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] Local colour in Savia Veigas' *Let Me Tell You About Quinta* (Dr Sonia Fernandes da Costa)

2014-09-18 Thread saxtti viegas
Dear Savia,

I finished one reading of your book and started reading it again but was
interrupted by playing with my grandsons and also looking through thick
book of essays on East African Literature I was sent from Germany to
review. I always read a book at least twice before I say anything about it.

At my first reading, I felt that your story was deep and profound, but
there were some gaps. It is a good opening to have the protagonist go
through the past under anesthesia, but a few paragraphs later it seems that
she is at some time in the future rethinking the past, and it seemed like a
clash of techniques. I also thought the novel was rushed at the end: that
the last part needed to be expanded and written in detail. My feeling is
that Goans have been through such a long colonialism that they lost their
resources, chief among them energy. For example, Lino Leitao began writing
a second novel in the early eighties and he wrote some brilliant erotic and
sacred chapters, but he died without finishing the novel. Violet Dias
Lannoy died without finishing two novels she had begun. It seems there is
no support system from Goans (you can infer this from Violet's diary notes)
and this seems to drain the writers. I am glad that Frederick has begun
what he has begun, but we must take care to keep expanding the
consciousness and creativeness instead of getting stuck at one level.

Please don't take this as a review of your novel. I believe that my first
reading of any novel is a feeding of my subconscious and my second reading
is my deeper one.

I like your cover design.

Best.

to me

Dear Savia,

I finished reading your novel today. Parts of your novel are brilliantly
written, such as pages 46-54, 73-75, 76-the end of the chapter, and
107. You present the reader with Goan history (mythic and also colonial)
in ways that make it alive. There is an understanding of the complexity of
the world Marri is born into, and it is told very well from her point of
view as a child and as someone growing up. The characters are well
rounded. Goan culture is presented in it complexity, with caste and class
and religious differences. You also have a sense of humour and
spirituality. You are a good novelist—the way Jose dies and we know has
been killed by Marri is very chilling and powerful—and should keep on
writing. The pages I have listed above could be included in an anthology
of Goan writing. The title is very good and structures the whole work:
everything happens in or through the attic. The novel is full of magical
stories: from Mai, Thette, and then Marri. The chapter on “The Lingam” is
brilliant in the way it shows how connections (from history) can be
unearthed, thrown up by the earth, counterbalancing the attic, where things
can be hidden or discovered. You don’t romanticize Goans: you show how
Hindus and Goans can distort the history of the other , simplify it, and
assume it is writ in stone.

However, I found some flaws in the work, as follows. The blurb says Marri
sees her past in flashbacks during a delayed return to
conscious[ness]. However, when the novel continues on page 5, it seems to
be a work written by Marri in her later years which sometimes she
reproduces what she experienced as a kid and sometimes mulls over what
people have told her and so she provides a later point of view or gives us
information like an omniscient narrator. For example, page 16, 24, 27, 32,
37, 46 [“years later”], 58, 69. The density of the writing disappears when
she goes to Bombay, and too much happens from pages 116 to the end, in a
few pages without depth: her marriage to Azad, the two babies, her
separation from Azad, her return to consciousness. Maybe these pages
should have all been in an Afterword. [Maybe you have continued the story
in the volume being published by Penguin India]. Your protagonist mentions
loss of energy, and it seems you the writer lost energy here and decided to
just end the novel by stopping. As it stands, all the depth and magic of
the writing vanishes and I feel the novel is incomplete.

To repeat what I said earlier: you are a very good novelist and some of
your lines and metaphors are beautifully resonant, such as “The
400-year-old palace by the river sentineled the ghost town like a forlorn
memory” (page 49) .

Keep on keeping on!

Bonny nets winner as Cavelossim return to top

Bonny Niasso netted in the 90th minute as Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim
came from behind to scrape past Sporting Clube de Goa 3-2 in round 5 of
Gfa’s Goa Pro League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Thursday. Sporting Goa led
2-1 at the interval.

The Flaming took the lead after just nine minutes when Beevan D’Mello
steered home a cross from Mauvin Borges. Eight minutes later Victorino
Fernandes blasted in his sixth goal of the season after receiving a lofted
pass from Glan Martins.

Despite being two goals down, Cavelossim courageously continued to
persevere and were rewarded when James Fernandes headed in from a Marcus
Fernandes cross.

Changing over, Cavelossim continued to apply pressure and were back on
level terms when Bonny crossed for James to shoot in and complete his brace.

With seconds left on the clock Cavelossim’s Bonny galloped forward to find
the winner and send Cavelossim back to the top of the table after
collecting 12 points from five matches.

At

[Goanet] Goans and Scotland

2014-09-18 Thread Jose
I had not hitherto realised that Goans was a surname also found in Scotland.
Talking about Scotland, the Scots are almost done voting in their referendum.

A few interesting points:

1: Until a few years ago, the separatist (YES) Scottish Nationalist Party was
considered a little irritation on the fringes. Two months ago, the YES Folks
were 20 points behind. Until a few days ago, the Vote was neck and neck. Let us
see what happens when all the votes are counted.

2: IF the YES voters win, next stop might be Wales.

3: IF the YES voters lose, the issue is likely to return. In the meantime, the
Scots would have squeezed some extra concessions from Westminister.

4: Whatever the result, the UK would have afforded the Scots ( albeit
grudgingly) to exercise their right to self-determination.

5: I have NO idea if it will be easy or difficult for Scotland, if the majority
vote to breakaway.

[Goanet] Lavy Pinto

2014-09-18 Thread Domnic Fernandes

Lavy
(Lavinho) Pinto was born in Nairobi, Kenya. His family hailed from Morodd,
Mapusa. He grew
up in the Dhobitalao area of South Bombay and studied at St. Xavier's School
and College. He got married in St. Jerome/Our Lady of Miracles Church in Mapusa
and went to Church in a horse carriage. He worked with Tatas and had his stints
at the Taj Mahal Hotel and Air India, before moving to the US in 1969. He has
five children: Leroy Pinto,
Lindsey Pinto, Elizabeth Pinto, Lorne Pinto and Lesley Pinto. They reside
in Chicago.

When
we talk of Goans who have enhanced the name of the state and country through
their achievements in track and field athletics wearing an India vest, Lavy
Pinto comes to mind.

The
pride of place will surely go to Lavy Pinto who for a number of years held the
National Records for the 100 and 200 Metres and whose State Record, in both
these events stood for a good many years. It was in 1951 that Lavy Pinto
established
a National record of 10.7 seconds. In 1953 he improved it to 10.6 seconds, it
seemed then that there was a glued magic to the figure of 10.6 seconds, which
had remained unbroken record for nearly twenty years. He also anchored the
4X100 relay quartet to silver.

Further
in the first Asian Games held at New Delhi in 1951 Lavy Pinto whilst
representing India came first in both sprints, and gained the title of being
Asia's fastest sprinter. Till then and up to the 1970 Bangkok Asian games no
Indian
could even come up-to the 6th place.

On
Lavy's performance at the first Asian Games he was selected to represent India
in the XV Olympic Games held at Helsinki in 1952. Pinto the captain of the
Indian athletic team came fourth in the semifinals of the 100 metres sprint in
a timing of 10.7 seconds and also reached the semi-finals of the 200 metres
sprint in a timing of 21.7 seconds. Lavy was very often a member of victorious
relay team which established National Records. He had the unique distinction of
being the national champion for both 100 and 200 metres.

1949
New Delhi, 1950 Bombay, 1951 Ludhiana, 1952 Madras, 1953 Jabalpur and 1955
Calcutta. He had to withdraw from the 200 metre sprint at Madras in 1952 owing
to a pulled leg muscle.

At
the national games he was selected in both events and in the semi-finals of the
200 metres sprint he established a New National Record of 21.5 seconds which
was unbroken for eight years.

So
far no other sprinter has achieved such a long record of distinctions. He was
nick-named Scorcher of the cinder tracks. The fastest man in Asia was
declared the 12th fastest individual in the world after a selection for the
Helsinki Olympic in 1952.

Out
of the eight athletes selected to represent India at the Helsinki Olympics two
were Goans - Lavy Pinto and Mary D'Souza.

Two
of the greatest contributions to Indian Athletics from the small Goan community
are International sprinters Lavy Pinto and Mary D'Souza both at the top of
their respective fields for a number of years. They have carved out a name for
the Goans that posterity will remember.

The answer is no. Eastern pre-scientific healing practices are largely
ineffective. Their claims are contradictory to the natural facts uncovered by

However, eastern pre-scientific healing practices might be slightly superior to
a western pre-scientific healing practice called homeopathy.

[Goanet] DEBATE: Inculturation -- searching for an Indian identity for the Church
