[Goanet] Wrld - Count up to World Goa Day (1)
October 29 2014 would have been my first death anniversary (long story) did not die or make it to the “Who Died” listings in some publications, just like our Language my gratitude that Konkani is still spoken by people living in Goa on the Konkan coast. Rewinding back not in any date order Konkani has been supressed by the majority of our confused Goan people outside Goa in different lands as migrating like herds they forage for greener pastures , employment and a so called better way of life, while at the same time holding on to some of our traditions and cuisine exported by the Patriotic Niz (proper) Goenkar around the planet whatever the odds that keep the Goan Brand and our link with Goa Ticking. You can view this in the GOAN CULINARY NETWORK and World Goa Day Celebrations. Put the G back in Goan with a capital G. Today’s 24/7 working environment we work different hours and have personal mobile communication and entertainment facilities the tongue may soon be redundant a self induced disability. Also the concept of the dining room in the western world is fading as it is not possible for folks to sit and eat together as a family at the same time and the only way to get teenagers and kids who are neither here or there ,everything else but Goan to the dining table is to switch off and shut down the wifi router and see them come running questioning “whats APP ened”. 19 August 2015 World Goa Day will be at least 25 years old and the word still has to get around even if having a worldwide meal together with song and dance can improve the atmosphere and friendship in our world family of different coloured passports go for it. Contact your local organiser today or organise an event yourself If possible re-establish your link to your long lost village and relations in Goa to ensure that WGD does not die. I must ask that the suit and collar no dollar in pocket ,top shots in our community stop sitting cross eyed and cross nosed for a few paisa more as did our ancestors. The majority of people in Goa still work an average of Four Hours a day. My Summary of how our language was lost down the Generations outside Goa: When Goa was an overseas province of Portugal only some villages were chosen to have a good standard of education including learning to speak and write in English. A number of these learned students crossed over the border into British Ruled India for employment opportunities, this created a tailor made administrative workforce for the British Colonies as the Europeans carved up the continent of Africa going North to South (Cape to Cairo) the Portuguese and Spanish west to east The workforce especially in East Africa saw the commercial importance of English and it was primarily during this time the children of this generation were brought up speaking English which then became their new adopted mother tongue myself being one of these. A clear recipe for GOA'S loot and plunder of what is left, dear advocate Aires Rodrigues. Very well done, in deed. GSRP On Tue, Jun 16, 2015 at 5:37 AM, Aires Rodrigues airesrodrigu...@gmail.com wrote: At Bicholim Independent MLA Naresh Sawal’s 50th birthday celebration last night it was a missed opportunity for the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) to have its meet. With Babush Monseratte expelled and Mauvin Godinho given away in adoption to the BJP, the Congress has an effective strength of seven MLA’s some of whom do not even see eye to eye, with every CLP meet usually attended by only three or four MLAs. But last night except for MLA Pandurang Madkaikar who is out of station, all the other six Congress MLAs including Jennifer Monseratte in a rare appearance congregated on one stage at Bicholim. They could infact have used the occasion to have their long overdue well attended CLP meet! The Congress after its March 2012 crushing defeat is yet to recuperate and may never recover. At the ensuing March 2017 Assembly elections the disastrous BJP is set to meet the same fate in its waterloo, with the winds of a political change now already blowing. To save what remains of Goa it is time that the young MLAs Vijai Sardesai, Reginald Lourenco, Naresh Sawal, Rohan Khaunte, Babush Monseratte, Michael Lobo, Pandurang Madkaikar, Vishwajit Rane amongst others move ahead in planning the road map for the much needed political Parivartan that Goa desperately needs. [Goanet] WHAT REMAINS OF GOA NEEDS TO BE SAVED
It has been a week of birthday celebrations of MLAs. After Vijai Sardesai and Naresh Sawal, today its Cuncolin MLA Rajan Naik’s, while tomorrow the 18 th of June is Calangute MLA Michael Lobo’s. Michael Lobo a very proactive hands on MLA is always amongst the people solving their never ending vows. A good human being who can feel the pulse of the people but in the wrong political party which does not respect the sentiments of all sections and communities. With the 2017 Assembly elections fast approaching, good leaders like Michael Lobo should jump ship before the Titanic sinks. It is for Michael Lobo to take the call, as BJP hatao – Goa Bachao may be the only way forward at the ensuing elections to rescue Goa from the current administrative anarchy, restore democratic values and to keep our State safely secular. Wishing our dear friend Michael Lobo all the very best on his birthday tomorrow which coincidentally is Goa Revolution day. Sir, be part of that much needed revolution to now salvage for posterity what remains of our once beautiful and glorious Goa. Re: [Goanet] Goanet - improsnment for slapping..........
I don't know all the details of Micky's case. But if it is just a case of slapping a govt. servant6 months in jail does sound out of proportion to the crime committed. But the judge has all the facts before him/her and must have taken the right decision. The way some of these government servants behave towards the public, with disdain and insulting behaviour, sometimes one feels like doing the same. Instead ofbeing government servants (i.e. servants of the public) many act as bosses of the public. And there is no redress for the public as government employees have life time employment. Unfortunately court cases even for simple clear cut situations such as this, take years forjustice to be delivered, giving credence to the saying that justice delayed is justice denied.I sincerely hope that justice in Goa is even handed and in other such incidents justice is delivered swiftly.

[Goanet] RIP Charles Correa
Charles Correa passed away last night. He was 84. His last three major commissions - on the MIT campus in Boston, the Ismaili Centre in Toronto, and the spectacular Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Lisbon - established his reputation as one of the greatest and most profound architects of our times. Last year, when the Islamic Centre opened to rave reviews, I made the case that Correa should be awarded the Bharat Ratna. Reproduced below is that tribute to this great, tireless Goan genius. -- http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Charles-Correa-Indias-Next-Bharat-Ratna/articleshow/43744567.cms Another milestone in Charles Correa's already spectacular career last week, when the $300 million Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre opened in Toronto. The museum was designed by 86-year-old Japanese Pritzer Prize winner, Fumihiko Maki, and the Ismaili Centre (including prayer hall) by Goa's own Correa, now a compelling candidate for the Bharat Ratna. The new complex has earned raves, Architectural Record says Toronto's cultural brand has moved into a new galaxy. The architects were reportedly given an elementary brief: the Aga Khan stressed only the concept of light. Architecture critic Hugh Pearman wrote in Newsweek, The most telling architectural gesture is Correa's prayer hall: a genuinely uplifting light-filled space beneath its soaring double-skin opalescent glass roof, glowing at night like a beacon. Entirely modern, it is a powerful mysterious object. Writes Pearman, Correa's virtuoso prayer hall changed the orientation of the complex, Maki recognized Correa's achievement, and in turn aligned his huge museum entrance towards it to frame the view: a nice gesture by one architect to another. In Toronto earlier this month, the architect from India said simply, there is God's sky above and God's earth below, and when you acknowledge both of them, that moves you, At 84, Charles Correa keeps moving faster, setting the bar even higher in his unprecedented career of record-breaking achievements. At home, it is clear he has no peer (the Royal Institute of British Architects 2013 retrospective exhibition was entitled, Charles Correa—India's Greatest Architect). Abroad, he has opened three blockbuster buildings in a row, following the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at Massachussets Institute of Technology in Boston (his alma mater), and the Champalimaud Centre for The Unknown in Lisbon. The Boston building houses three of the world's leading centres for brain science studies. Across the way is a characteristically flamboyant building designed by Frank Gehry. But in this case too, Correa's building quietly changed the big picture altogether, as he wanted to bring down the decibel level of the street. The McGovern Institute has become a runaway favourite on the MIT campus. The Champalimaud Centre firmly cemented Correa's place in the pantheon of the greatest architects of our time. It is a deeply significant building built by a Goan precisely at the spot where the Tagus flows into the Atlantic, and Portuguese armadas launched the Age of Discoveries that brought them to Goa and India with such consequence to world history. This writer was recently privileged to tour Champalimaud with Leonor Beleza, the former minister of health who is now the first President of the Champalimaud Foundation. But it was later, on a sailboat after sunset, that the immensity of Correa's achievement became apparent. This sublime building's clean lines and orbs glowed from within. At its heart, two monoliths soared up into the gloom. Described by the architect as straight from the quarry, as primordial as Stonehenge they stirred emotions in this viewer that felt as ancient. The Ismaili Centre, the McGovern Institute for Brain Sciences and the Champalimaud Centre each cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build. There is considerable irony these greatest Indian buildings of recent times (because there are highly recognizable Indian elements in each) are all in other countries, though many other superb Correa designs can be viewed in India: the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, the Legislative Assembly in Bhopal, the Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, and Panjim's welcoming little jewel, the Kala Academy. Still, it is true that Charles Correa has not yet been able to make a big difference in his native Goa. As recorded in his lovely book of essays, 'A Place in the Shade', as far back as 1972 he had already warned of hideous ribbon development (which has now overwhelmed both sides of every highway and main road in the state), as well as continuous erosion of the marvelous tropical jungles (which have now been comprehensively destroyed). Back then, he recommended a continuous feedback of information-flow and decision-making...if we play our cards right, we could perhaps get to eat our cake. And preserve it too. That reads today almost like a cruel joke, because Goa was allowed to be overwhelmed, abused and exploited to
[Goanet-News] Architect Charles Correa dies at 84 (TNN)
Architect Charles Correa dies at 84 TNN | Jun 17, 2015, 02.15 AM IST Charles Correa, arguably India's greatest contemporary architect, passed away at 11.45pm on Tuesday in Mumbai following a brief illness. He was 84. A proponent of 'open-to-skies' spaces, he liked using local techniques and aesthetics in his buildings. He didn't like what was happening to Mumbai's landscape and skyline, and was at the forefront of an intense debate over the shape and form the city should take. Correa received numerous prestigious national and international awards. He was responsible for designing many landmark buildings, starting with the Gandhi Memorial at Sabarmati, when he was only 28. Other notable structures include Bharat Bhavan and Vidhan Bhavan in Bhopal, the Permanent Mission of India at the UN, New York, Kala Academy in Goa and the Kanchanjunga residential tower in Mumbai. Recently, he completed three notable buildings abroad — the Ismaili Centre in Toronto, the Brain Science Center at MIT, Boston and the Champalimaud Centre in Lisbon. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Architect-Charles-Correa-dies-at-84/articleshow/47697831.cms
