[Goanet] From Africa to Goa in the 1960s: troubled times, transitions and transistors

2015-12-30 Thread Goanet Reader
Roland Travas
rolandtra...@gmail.com

The winds of change were sweeping colonial Africa
in the 1960s. The Europeans were awarding
independence to their former territories, although
there were problems for France in Algeria, for
Belgium in the Congo and for the British in
Southern Rhodesia. White South Africa with its
Apartheid policies was another complex issue
  altogether. The British-administered lands of
Kenya, Tanganyika, Uganda and Zanzibar were given
self-determination in the early sixties --
Tanganyika in 1961, Uganda in 1962, Kenya and
Zanzibar towards the latter part of 1963.

The colonial administration in Kenya had its problems during
the Kikuyu rebellion earlier on, but at the time of
independence there was a relative peaceful transition for all
of British East Africa.

Zanzibar and its sister island of Pemba where my family lived
was a Protectorate ruled by a Resident who represented the
Queen of England. The majority of inhabitants were Africans
at the bottom of the political, economic and social levels.
The land-owning Arab minority had a Sultan whose origins lay
in Oman in the Gulf. The Asians, predominately Indians,
Pakistanis and small number of Chinese, controlled the trade
in the islands.

The Goans who numbered in the hundreds fitted
somewhere in between. Because of their Catholic
upbring and on account of their being Portuguese
citizens, they were classified differently by the
British. Many Goans worked in government, banking
and in the private sector. Others were tailors or
craftsmen. Political power was solely in the hands
of the Europeans with the Sultan serving their
  interests.

Each community lived within its sphere. Each went to its
place of worship, formed cultural and social and economic
alliances. Non-Africans had it relatively good in all areas
of life. One needs to understand this reality to follow what
happened next.

The British handed the political reins to the Arab-minority
Zanzibar Nationalist Party, and left. The Africans were
disenfranchised and the status quo remained. Within a month,
a violent African-led revolution occurred, toppling the new
government and changing the entire dynamic of the small, two
island nation state.

On Sunday, January 12, 1964 we awoke to the news of fighting
taking place in Zanzibar. Then it became apparent that a
major change was in the making. The government had been
overthrown and a revolutionary one was in the process of
replacing it.

Fighting was still going on. My first thoughts were of my
father who had gone to Zanzibar to enroll me in high school
there. There was no communication between the two islands as
all services had been disrupted. What little we could learn
was from the radio stations on the mainland and via the BBC.

In a few days what became increasingly clear was
the grim details of killings, violence and chaos
including the brutal shootings of five Goans who
had been returning from church services. The
revolutionary junta took over and consolidated its
hold on power. Some sort of normality returned
between two islands. Shipping, transportation and
other services resumed and my father returned.

These were trying times to say the least. There were all
sorts of shortages and food and basics were almost
unavailable. There were reprisals against members of the
elite, former government officials and supporters. Many
others were arrested for no apparent reasons. There were
open-air trials, flogging and incarceration. Some were never
heard off again from reports one read later. People lived in
a constant state of fear.

At the onset of the revolution, the Sultan had fled into
exile in Britain; right afterwards, in the ensuing melee, the
Arab land owning class and politicians lost their lands and
were either killed or imprisoned. The Asians had their
businesses and their properties nationalized and were told to
leave. An extreme form of cleansing and Africanization began
to take hold.

My parents' businesses were taken over and it
became clear that foreigners were no longer wanted
here. It is in predicament that my parents booked a
berth for us to move to Goa. We were all eager to
leave although we were apprehensive. On the one
hand, we had to forsake the life that we had known
and, on the other hand, we were also unsure of what
lay ahead. The ship docked at Mombasa, Kenya. The
sea was calm and the journey peaceful but the time
was clouded by the terrible events we had gone
  through.

When we landed in April of 1964, Goa was itself in a
transition state. The Portuguese had left -- rather, made to
leave -- in 1961 and it became part

Allegation(s) is a double-edged sword, one edge eventually getting blunted in a
court of law. However, those sitting in the judgment of facts and
circumstances are not necessarily or patently infallible. And while the wheels
of justice may be dictated by statute or likewise barred, karmic justice is
without statute.

The beleaguered Pop star and Padma Shri Remo Fernandes should substantiate
his reckless allegation that the minor child who was knocked down by the
speeding car driven by his son Jonah is lying and attempting to extort
money.

I have nothing personal against Remo Fernandes. Have pursued the case after
Fr Savio Barreto, the Director of Basilica of Bom Jesus on 18th December
narrated the sordid events of that Dec 1st accident. The very insensitive,
uncaring and outrageous misconduct by the Pop Star at the scene of that
accident and thereafter cannot be condoned by any sensible person.

[Goanet-News] From Africa to Goa in the 1960s: troubled times, transitions and transistors

2015-12-30 Thread Goanet Reader
Roland Travas
rolandtra...@gmail.com

The winds of change were sweeping colonial Africa
in the 1960s. The Europeans were awarding
independence to their former territories, although
there were problems for France in Algeria, for
Belgium in the Congo and for the British in
Southern Rhodesia. White South Africa with its
Apartheid policies was another complex issue
  altogether. The British-administered lands of
Kenya, Tanganyika, Uganda and Zanzibar were given
self-determination in the early sixties --
Tanganyika in 1961, Uganda in 1962, Kenya and
Zanzibar towards the latter part of 1963.

The colonial administration in Kenya had its problems during
the Kikuyu rebellion earlier on, but at the time of
independence there was a relative peaceful transition for all
of British East Africa.

Zanzibar and its sister island of Pemba where my family lived
was a Protectorate ruled by a Resident who represented the
Queen of England. The majority of inhabitants were Africans
at the bottom of the political, economic and social levels.
The land-owning Arab minority had a Sultan whose origins lay
in Oman in the Gulf. The Asians, predominately Indians,
Pakistanis and small number of Chinese, controlled the trade
in the islands.

The Goans who numbered in the hundreds fitted
somewhere in between. Because of their Catholic
upbring and on account of their being Portuguese
citizens, they were classified differently by the
British. Many Goans worked in government, banking
and in the private sector. Others were tailors or
craftsmen. Political power was solely in the hands
of the Europeans with the Sultan serving their
  interests.

Each community lived within its sphere. Each went to its
place of worship, formed cultural and social and economic
alliances. Non-Africans had it relatively good in all areas
of life. One needs to understand this reality to follow what
happened next.

The British handed the political reins to the Arab-minority
Zanzibar Nationalist Party, and left. The Africans were
disenfranchised and the status quo remained. Within a month,
a violent African-led revolution occurred, toppling the new
government and changing the entire dynamic of the small, two
island nation state.

On Sunday, January 12, 1964 we awoke to the news of fighting
taking place in Zanzibar. Then it became apparent that a
major change was in the making. The government had been
overthrown and a revolutionary one was in the process of
replacing it.

Fighting was still going on. My first thoughts were of my
father who had gone to Zanzibar to enroll me in high school
there. There was no communication between the two islands as
all services had been disrupted. What little we could learn
was from the radio stations on the mainland and via the BBC.

In a few days what became increasingly clear was
the grim details of killings, violence and chaos
including the brutal shootings of five Goans who
had been returning from church services. The
revolutionary junta took over and consolidated its
hold on power. Some sort of normality returned
between two islands. Shipping, transportation and
other services resumed and my father returned.

These were trying times to say the least. There were all
sorts of shortages and food and basics were almost
unavailable. There were reprisals against members of the
elite, former government officials and supporters. Many
others were arrested for no apparent reasons. There were
open-air trials, flogging and incarceration. Some were never
heard off again from reports one read later. People lived in
a constant state of fear.

At the onset of the revolution, the Sultan had fled into
exile in Britain; right afterwards, in the ensuing melee, the
Arab land owning class and politicians lost their lands and
were either killed or imprisoned. The Asians had their
businesses and their properties nationalized and were told to
leave. An extreme form of cleansing and Africanization began
to take hold.

My parents' businesses were taken over and it
became clear that foreigners were no longer wanted
here. It is in predicament that my parents booked a
berth for us to move to Goa. We were all eager to
leave although we were apprehensive. On the one
hand, we had to forsake the life that we had known
and, on the other hand, we were also unsure of what
lay ahead. The ship docked at Mombasa, Kenya. The
sea was calm and the journey peaceful but the time
was clouded by the terrible events we had gone
  through.

When we landed in April of 1964, Goa was itself in a
transition state. The Portuguese had left -- rather, made to
leave -- in 1961 and it became part

[Goanet] Minimum education for elctions

2015-12-30 Thread Nelson Lopes
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR NETAS

Harayana State has made std X for men in general category and
Std VIII for women. It is upheld by the Supreme Court and is a step in
right direction, Every occupations /profession has laid minimum
qualifications and why not the elected. Educational qualification of std X
and cannot be considered as a stiff level, The compulsory primary
education for those in age group under 14 years within ten years is still a
distant dream after 68 years .It is also true that many are denied this
luxury of formal education due to economical reasons and lack of facilities
within the vicinity. The MLA`s and MP`s are rattled and much worried lot
,for they may be possibly be next target and hence take shelter under
public, National debate as a diversionary tactic. It is no secret that any
fake degrees are available for asking and many have used them for
employment.

Electors know that Secretaries in Govt. do the basic work and education is
not a hurdle to occupy the highest post in Governance,. Many electors skip
the House and hardly ever participate, except through question hour to
substantiate their existence in the eyes of their voters. Congress calls
the decision to divide voters, but BJP welcomes it.. Constitutional
limitations of debarring with those of unsound mind, can reasonably make
another limitations of minimum educational base. Debates, discussions are
generally monopolized by a small educated minority and having such
compositions is advantageous to their lime light Understanding the
intricacies of Governance , to frame laws. Participate in discussions ,
debates at least needs basic education and it is but natural that we have
literate, well informed leaders representing us.. The issue cannot be
postponed indefinitely, till India is literate in the near future. The
argument that the grass root workers will be denied vertical mobility in
governance in spite of their experience, practical wisdom. It may also give
fillip to spread literacy movement

Governance is also a highly technical business to be independent and not to
be slaves of the secretaries, dominating the field “ YES MINISTER SERIES”
highlights the role of these functionaries. That voters have also right to
stand for elections is stretching to far unconvincingly. In this
competitive world educated electors at any level of Governance. Voters who
elect them have a limited purpose and do not understand the nitty gritty of
 functioning of the Governance

Happy New Year 2016

As 2016 is about to begin
Let us never forget that
Politicians and their cronies will come into our lives and dominate them

When convenient, they will change their positions and their political party
affiliation

They are enriching themselves, while we are wasting our time; Time which we
could have utilised to better our family lives and ourselves.

Enough of this meaningless bitterness and infighting on behalf of politicians
IF any among us believes we can make a change (which I believe, we cannot),
Vote smartly, and if possible.contest as a candidate.

In the meantime, Let us look after each other and live in Peace.

A Peaceful, Happy and Prosperous 2016 to ALL of us.

*‘PLAY AS IF THIS IS YOUR LAST MATCH’*

*AIFF Media Team*

*THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (TRIVANDRUM):* It’s not that threatening but the last
couple of days have seen clouds hover over the City. It’s a bit cloudy and
the next moment, bright sunny.

Two years back, the line-up for the semifinal in Kathmandu stayed the same
– India vs Maldives. India had won one-nil then, courtesy an Arnab Mondal
volley.

“That was then, this is now,” Mondal insists. “In today’s Football every
match is difficult. The Teams study each other so much. So you ought to do
the extra bit to topple the rivals. That pertains to all levels of
Football. Even Maldives will aim at that; and we will aim at that too,” he
says at the Team Hotel lobby.

You remember that strike? You quiz.

Arnab reiterates: “That was then, some two years back. Tomorrow is a new
day. I don’t think the strike is any more significant.”

Pritam Kotal, nicknamed ‘PK’ by his teammates, complements Mondal. “You
have to work hard and play like as if it’s your last match. This is the
ideology of the Coach and we have played every match based on this
ideology,” he states.

At the Official pre-match Media Interaction National Coach Stephen
Constantine said, “We are looking forward to a difficult game against
Maldives as they are a good side. Not only are Maldives highly organized,
they are good in the attacking department too.”

Reflecting upon his squad, Constantine opined: “The 19 Players we have now
have all performed brilliantly. Although our preparations were hampered by
Robin’s injury, which is a big blow for us, life goes on. But it also gives
the opportunity to the other Players to fill into his shoes.”

Constantine further added: “The SAFF Competition also gives us the
opportunity to play youngster against similar opponents, paving a way for
them to evolve in a competitive environment.”

The British Coach has given debuts to two Players in Lallianzuala, who
scored a brace against Nepal, and 22 year old defender Koushik Sarkar, in
the SAFF Cup Championship thus far. In his 11matches so far, he has fielded
22 debutants, ie an average of 2 per match.

“It is always great to see a young Player make his debut – be it for Club
or his Country. But the question is how do we look after the Player off the
pitch?” he inquired. “If we want them to be the Star that they are capable
of, we need to give them time and space. We need to look after them,
nurture them, and not exploit them,” he says in one breath.

Meanwhile, Kotal admits: “Although Maldives will be a tricky fixture, we
will try to play our game. We need to follow the Coach’s plan. They are a
good attacking side and we need to maintain our shape. “We will give our
cent percent on the pitch.”

“Coach (Constantine) is giving a chance to the young Players from all
across the Nation, which is good for the overall growth of Indian Football.”

As 2015 comes to an end, all wait to embrace a new 2016. ‘Happy New Year,’
the most widely used term all over the World among all festive occasions,
has been decorately lit up all over the City and in the Team Hotel too.
Team India “aims” to make the transition into the New Year as smooth as
possible.

But as Coach insisted, “it will be tricky.”

The kick-off is at 3.30pm and the match will be telecast live on Star
Sports.
