When a Goan recollects the Iraqi invasion

TNN | Feb 25, 2016, 10.05 AM IST Panaji: When Iraqi troops invaded
Kuwait in the wee hours of August 2, 1990, the strong community of
around 25,000 Goans were caught unaware. Overnight they saw their
peaceful streets transform into a war zone, their homes broken into
and belongings stolen. Many left the country in tears with a single
suitcase only to return and find their homes, razed to the ground.

Recalling those tense days, A Veronica Fernandes, a freelance writer
who moved to Kuwait from Candolim in 1975 never thought he'd make it
through. He found himself face to face with Iraqi soldiers and
underwent the traumatizing experience of being held at gun point on
more than a one occasion. "We switched off the lights in our homes,
hid and prayed for the firing to stop. It was a very traumatic
experience for everyone," he recalls.

On his return to Goa, after the borders were opened, some of the
Kuwaiti Goan evacuees were deeply-affected to see the country that
gave them employment opportunities being bombed, didn't sit back.
Instead, a public meeting was called on November 3, 1990, at Tristao
Braganca Cunha Memorial Hall, near Azad Maidan attended by 100 Kuwait
evacuee Goans. The Goa-Solidarity Centre came into being and on
November 12 they organized a rally on the streets of Panaji in support
of Kuwait. "This rally was attended by hundreds of Kuwait evacuee
Goans including Kuwaitis where Col Juma Kholifi, a prominent officer
in the ministry of interior affairs delivered a very emotional speech.
CNN too highlighted our efforts and the news reached the Kuwait
embassy in Delhi and the Kuwait government in exile in Taif, Saudi
Arabia," Fernandes who initiated the movement told TOI.

The group sustained themselves through voluntary contributions
refusing to accept outside financial contributions even refusing to
align with the Progressive Democratic Front at the time.

A number of meetings in the state city in the months leading up to
Kuwait's Liberation were held including a night vigil in front of
Panaji church on the eve of the start of the war for liberation and a
victory rally on March 12, 1991.

After the war, the association led by Fernandes started a movement to
get Kuwait's Prisoners of War freed, holding regular meetings in
Kuwait and even pressuring the Indian government to intervene in
Kuwait's support.

Fernandes visited Delhi in 1995 and met with K H Khan, chairman of the
Indo-Arab Friendship Society and both foreign ministers R L Bhatia and
Salman Khurshid presenting them with memorandums.

To commemorate the 25th Liberation Day of Kuwait, the Goa-Kuwait
Solidarity Centre with Fernandes as its convenor is organizing a
meeting at the Goa chamber of commerce and industry conference hall on
Thursday where he will also release his autobiography 'From Coconut
Trees to Oil Wells' published by Goa 1556. The book, he says, is
dedicated to all Goans who brought prosperity home through their sweat
and tears in distant Kuwait.

[Goanet-News] Demand for language rights... on Int'l Mother Language Day (Eric Ozario)

2016-02-26 Thread Goanet News
INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY
Feb. 21, 2016 -- New Delhi
and DELHI DEMANDS FOR LANGUAGE RIGHTS

A Report

Campaign for Language Equality and Rights (CLEAR), headed by
Senthil Nathan, with a view to change India's Language
Policy, had invited representatives of Indian languages to
assemble in Delhi, on Feb. 21, 2016 -- the International
Mother Language Day.

Accordingly, representatives of 40 Indian languages addressed
a Press Conference and released the 'Delhi Demands for
Language Rights, at 1 pm, at the Press Club of India, Raisina
Road, and at 5, that evening, gathered at Jantar Mantar and
held a Candle-Light Vigil, to initiate the campaign to
change India's Language Policy.

The major demands are:

1. To declare all languages included in the VIIIth Schedule
of the Indian Constitution (including Konkani), as Official
Languages of the Union Government.

2. To include all languages recommended by the Mahapatra
Committee in the VIIIth Schedule of the Constitution.

3. The Central and State Governments to protect and preserve
tribal and lesser languages threatened with extinction.

4. Fight against the imposition of one language over the
others, undertaken by the Central Government, specially
Hindi.

5. Allow each language the right to choose their own
script/scripts for literature in their language.

The Delhi Demands were endorsed by the following,
representing their languages --

Anand G. Karnataka (Kannada)
Deepak Pawar Maharashtra (Marathi)
Ganesh Chetan Karnataka (Kannada)
Garga Chatterjee West Bengal (Bengali)
Joga Singh Virk Punjab (Punjabi)
Komakkambedu Himakiran Anugula Tamil Nadu (Tamil, Telugu)
Mani M. Manivannan Tamil Nadu (Tamil)
P. Pavithran Kerala (Malayalam)
Priyank KS Karnataka (Kannada)
Ravishankar Ayyakkannu Tamil Nadu (Tamil)
Saket Shreebushan Sahu Odisha (Kosali)
S. Senthilnathan (Aazhi Senthilnathan) Tamil Nadu (Tamil)
Thamizneriyan Tamil Nadu (Tamil)
Vasant Shetty Karnataka (Kannada)
Eric Ozario Karnataka (Konkani)
Vivek V. Karnataka (Kannada)
Umakanthan P. Karnataka (Kannada, Tamil)

Given the atmosphere of intolerance and imposition that we
live in, in India today and especially in view of the fight
for equal rights for all scripts of Konkani that we are
fighting against the Kendra Sahitya Akademi, in the courts of
law, this campaign for Language Rights has a great
significance for the future of Konkani.

I, therefore, entreat every Konkani organisation to join this
campaign enthusiastically. The developments in this regard
will be informed from time-to-time. I must place on record my
sense of pride at the participation of the leaders and
members of the Kanara Cultural Association, headed by its
President, Smt. Lydia D’Almeida.

In fact, it was a matter of great pride for me that Konkanis'
was the largest contingent at the Candle-Light Vigil. I
congratulate and thank them on behalf of Jago'tik Konknni
So'ngho'tto;n. I once again remind every Konkani organisation
to initiate the implementation of the Konkani Language Plan
adopted six months ago.

De'v bo'rem ko'rum.

[Goanet] ...a review... KADAMBA DYNASTY HISTORY FILM

2016-02-26 Thread Jeffery S. Nunes
...a review... Kadamba Dynasty history film.
Part I ... a must see 10 min show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KosShFvaw1M
In this part of the video the producers in their artistic effort take the
audience way back to the 12th century life in Goa under the Kadamba rule, Life
out side both Palaces of Chandor and Pillar, Goa Velha. The agricultural and
handicraft activities those days, more so the historical Jaykeshi II battle of
Velliapura, which was fought in Velim, Goa. The Video 'part I' ends with the
showing of the prosperous people in popular 'Rajabid'  market place in Goa
Velha.
Part II...a must see 10 min show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6q3y17LK80

Part II video starts on a very sad note with cutting music, the circumstances
surrounding horrific tragedy which lead to the assassination of King Suriyadeva
in the Oct of 1345, the producers in their attempt give a clear picture of that
atrocious day according to history, of the burning palaces, horses running for
their lives and the dead, the sad arrival of his Queen at Chandrapura  in
Chandor Goa, only to find this horrible news of death and her attempt to
survive with a 're-invention' in Haliyal and in their new home in Velliapura at
Velim Goa under the Portuguese factor and at last the 'Democracy' for their
people.
We have to appreciate and applaud the whole exertion made by the producers and
directors  to give the Konkan people a chance to look at their history.

Goregaon residents meet corporators for their neighbourhood issues
Pooja Patel | Fri, 26 Feb
2016-06:09am , Mumbai , dna

At a recent meeting at Goregaon, citizens met their elected corporator to
address the ongoing problems

The Bombay Catholic Sabha (BCS) recently organised an interactive session at
Goregaon's Our Lady of the Rosary Parish with its elected corporators. The
meeting gave citizens an opportunity to ask questions regarding ongoing
problems in their neighbourhood-issues that have remained unresolved, possible
solutions for them as well as the work done in the last four years.

Apart from BCS and the Parish, this meet was also coordinated and organised by
the Goregaon West Unit, with the support of St. Thomas Parish BCS Goregaon East
Unit, AGNI, CitySpace-NAGAR, P/South Ward ALM group and other civic activists.

Corporator Pramila Shinde who attended the event among others, had a two-hour
long discussion with the audience. Shinde, who is the corporator of ward number
51 of Goregaon area had an extensive chat with the citizens, answered their
questions and discussed three major issues raised by them.

Goregaon Maternity Hospital Demolition

A question raised by one of the citizens was about the status of the Goregaon
Maternity Hospital that has been demolished for a while now, but has not seen
any further development. The member wanted a status report and a plan of action
regarding the same.

Shinde replied, "There was a need for a special pediatric ward for the children
at this hospital and that is the reason the work had to start at the hospital.
This change will make doctors accessible for the kids and is therefore, a major
reason as to why it is taking time. Soon, it will be available to all with 50
beds."

Redevelopment of Motilal Nagar 1, 2, 3 and 4

Citizens living in these areas are stuck in a messy situation due to the
paperwork for the redevelopment going back and forth. The citizens wanted to
know how long it would take to get the problem resolved, given that even MHADA
is involved in the process.

Shinde replied, "We are conducting several sessions and meetings to discuss the
same. We are proposing to give the maximum benefit to the residents so that
they can have spacious and better houses. This may take a bit longer but we are
certainly following up on this."

Open space encroachment

A major issue that has been nagging Goregaon residents is the encroachment of
open spaces in their neighbourhood. Squatters have taken over a large a portion
of an open maidan and this has led to filthy surroundings, while also
questioning the security of the residents.

Shinde took note of this and said that the issue will be worked upon
immediately. She said that since this was not reported to her, she wasn't aware
of the gravity of the situation. "Henceforth, if there is any encroachment
anywhere in my constituency, please let me know and I'll work on it
immediately," she concluded.

COMMENTS

The GOA SU-RAJ PARTY congratulates the people of  South Goa for resisting
this foolish intent of the Government of Goa to lend large chunks of Goa's
limited lands to the Central Agencies when Goa is reeling under the
pressure to preserve its lands for Goa's well being and for the benefit of
Goans.

GSRP will do all these things which are a part of its permanent Manifesto
when GOANS FEEL IT FIT TO PUT IT ON THE PEDESTAL IT DESERVES TO BE:-
1. Put the Navy on  short notice to move out of Dabolim lock-stock and
barrel, to  maintain a very minimum security presence as universally
demanded at International Airports.

2. Scrap MOPA which is the brain-child of the Navy to digest Goa's Civilian
Airport illegally captured after Operation Vijay.

3. Shift the Army Signal Head Quarters located in Panjim along with the
Militiary Hospital to either Bambolim or elsewhere. Goans do not want the
military remain in the congested City of Panjim.

4. The extent of lands given to central agencies in Goa shall be put under
strict review and mostly terminated.

5. The Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Navy and the Goa
Government vis a vis the take over of Goa's Anjediva Island by the Navy
shall be reviewed especially with the Navy having flouted the terms of this
Memorandum where the locals shall be allowed pilgrimage to the religious
shrine located on the Island to keep the aged old tradition. The Anjediva
Island transfer to the Navy is illegal and shall be reverted.

6. Goans do not want Goa to  be militarized to afford good life to the
military personnel at the cost of GOANS primarily because Goa does not have
VOLATILE BORDERS.

7. Goa has been used by the Centre as it likes with their chamcha
governments in Goa dancing to every tune that the Centre plays w.r.t.
defence and accommodating defence agencies in Goa without questioning the
rationale. Therefore it is time for GOA to have Goa's Own High Command In
Goa so that decision are taken in Goa what happen in Goa and Goans and not
in Delhi, Nagpur or elsewhere on  the basis of loaded suitcases with
currency notes.

8. Foremost, the Centre has to answer the questions that Goans are asking
about the Goa's conquest and annexation, without giving GOANS the
opportunity to chose  their  own fate, as promised by Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru when he had said
QUOTE
" I WANT TO EXPLAIN MYSELF. IF THE PEOPLEOF GOA, MINUS THE PORTUGUESE,
DELIBERATELY WISH TO RETAIN THEIR SEPARATE IDENTITY, I AM NOT GOING TO
BRING THEM BY FORCE, COMPULSION OR COERCION INTO THE INDIAN UNION. I
MERELY ADD THAT MY NATIONAL INTERST INVOLVES THE REMOVAL  OF THE PORTUGUESE
FROM GOA"
UNQUOTE
It is, however, sad that the Portuguese who were driven out like dogs and
who went running with their tails between their legs post 1961, returned
to lick the feet that had kicked them out through signing of the 1974
Chavan-Mario Soares Co-operation Treaty WITHOUT TAKING GOANS INTO
CONFIDENCE AS IF GOANS WHERE THE PORTUGUSE CHATEL. Portugal's present  Goan
Origin Premier ANTONIO COSTA, owes Goans a distinct  apology on this count,
especially when Mario Soares' government was a transition Government and
not an elected one.

[Goanet] GOA IS UNFORTUNATE TO BE RULED AS A COLONY BY POWERS THAT BE, AFTER ALL

GOA IS UNFORTUNATE TO BE RULED AS A COLONY BY POWERS THAT BE, AFTER ALL

ANTI-DefExpo camp sticks to stand of scrapping project.- H

Dear Goans,
What we had prior to 1961 was a benevolent Colonialist -rule from a far.
What we have after 1961 is repressive Colonialist rule from across the
borders of Goa.
There is no difference, more so this present colonialist rule is diluting
us GOANs instead of promises given to protect us, so bad, that we shall
have to shine a torch-light to identify GOANS IN GOA in times to come.
What you are doing against DefExpo is our BIRTHRIGHT.
WE GOANS MUST NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO SLIGHT US in the name of the Security of
the Nation.
for, GOA and GOANS do not have the obligation to protect the Nation at
their very costs.
CHARITY STARTS AT HOME.
And we shall observe this CARDINAL RULE.

GSRP for GOA'S OWN HIGH COMMAND IN GOA.

Re: [Goanet] DID RIBANDAR PARISH PRIEST FATHER LAWRENCE FERNANDES CROSS THE THRESHOLD?

2016-02-26 Thread Venantius J Pinto
For starter’s do not confess to this priest. And no one tell me anything as
to what the priesthood represents. I

My maternal granduncle Pdr. Alvaro Lodovico Figuereido (Batim), was an
ex-Parish Priest of Ribandar. I truly hope he was not in the same league as
Fr. Fernandes. I hope he was a decent pastor to his flock, instead of some
zealous ( _ _ _ _ _ ). I do know that he was struck, perhaps being a
missionary in Karwar, Sirsi, Dharwar?! Some, or should we concur that way
too many priests are able to assault the sensibilities of even the more
corrupt. Imagine! Perhaps its about building a nest egg at whatever cost.
There surely is that element to contend with for many of them. More and
more one learns that the notion of a few bad apples in way too many fields
and vocations is redundant.

Re: [Goanet] [GOABOOKCLUB] Bookworm Trust for Literacy Hero Award - Please vote

2016-02-26 Thread augusto pinto
I did. So all the best to Bookworm.

When I looked at the modus operandi of this poll methought that it was a
bit dodgy. It all depends on how many people the candidate can get to cast
their votes online. So irrespective of the worth of the candidate all that
one needs is the skill to garner that many votes online. Those
organizations without any skills at canvassing votes are likely to lose out
no matter how meritorious they may happen to be.

Anyway may the best book-love spreader win!
