[Goanet] Goan Tanzanian

2016-04-22 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Folks,Here is another video from the BBC about non-indigenous Tanzanians.
The person interviewed is Elliot Pinto. I am told he owns the best bakery in
Dar. Elliot is the son of Errol Pinto or for the hockey players here, the
grand-son of the famous Tanga hockey and badminton player, Lina Pinto.
For those of you whose Swahili is rusty, Elliot says that the one time he went
to Goa, he had to communicate in English with his relatives/friends there and
some of them did not understand English. He adds that some Goans treated him
like a foreigner.
Thanks to Doc Quadros for pointing out this video as I would have missed it.

[Goanet] Goans for sustainable development

2016-04-22 Thread Nelson Lopes
GOANS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
A private initiative supported and funded by contributions of the
participants. A large gathering of different shades of people at Lohia
maidan was apacked beyond capacity with crowds spreading into streets,
breaking religious barriers and from different parts of Goa, self
motivated, lent their support to the organizers,. The gathering was
entertained , sensitized, created interest by Tiatrists , Francis de Tuem,
Marcus, Lawry Travaso,Xavier Gomes and comedians Neto and Richard. Then
groups from different parts of Goa dwelled on the disastrous effects of RP
21 in their own back yard .Almost all the groups were of the opinion that
the RP 21 in its present form has converted very large tracts of mountains
,plateaus, fields are converted into settlement zone, back door entry to
eco tourism and favouring big chain of hotels permitted construction within
200 to 500 meters of CRZ , The present habitation are deliberately left
out. Mr Prasssana highlighted about Cavelossim, destruction of sand dunes,
CRZ favouring Hotel promotion and ignoring carrying capacity of beaches.
Fatima Fernandes was emotionally vocal and emotionally charged in her
deposition about Siolim and Chapora river into echo tourism. Mr Baretto
spoke about Canacona, promoting more industrial estates at Loliem ,
Sadolxem, when one is not functioning. Hotels are in the offing The
flooding of last time was blamed on unplanned filing of natural
distribution of water routes, loss of greenery, The expansion of NH 17 from
8 mts to 25 mts will have adverse effects on existing settlements. Agnelo
Rodrigues spoke about plight of Goenkarancho Ramponkarancho Ekvot stressed
about the force of 80 lakhs members and ignoring their basic existence and
living. Sidarth Karapukar about NH17 planned to be widened by 80 mts and 4
mts height, that would be seen from space apart from Great wall of China.
No bidders for Mopa airport unless rapid transport system is in place ,
Western express highway is unexplainable at 80 meters wide needing 3.50 L
trucks for filling this stretch alone, Municipalities are kept outside OPD
of RP21, as there is no protest like in Panchayats .The broadening of roads
from 10mts, 15, mts, 25 mts will hit the dwellers on roadsides and favour
builders lobby. The Goans for sustainable development made detail
presentation with slides which was very effective visual. The study is
complete with 120 villages out of 283villages and compared against Google
images The RP21 largely favours builders, industries plateaus, mountains,
fields shown in settlement areas and hinterland inclusion pushing
indirectly echo tourism
Fr Eremito called the present rulers as anti Goan and are the worst enemies
not comparable with Portuguese and British.RP21 should be scrapped in toto
with moratorium and permit single dwelling houses ill then He said the MOPA
being under special PDA is unheard of an measure for acting brazenly and
roughshod against all normal regulations All Goans leaving aside their
differences of religion etc must unite to preserve Goan identity and not to
make the same mistake of putting the present rulers in the saddle again
This may the last elections for Goans to stress their identity
Diana too made visual representation of preservation of pure water and how
destruction of mountains, plateaus leads to scarcity of drinking water, She
highlighted convincingly about mining activity polluting drinking water
sources and also effecting life in oceans The participants displayed strong
bonding with the movement

Here is the new, all Goan POLITICAL leadership, [untainted by the corrupt

Hopefully, with GSRP trying to lead a 30 strong team in the coming

they have to come together. This is the prime requisite. No? But Goans are
kept divided with altogether newer national monsters entering the electoral
fray in Goa. 2016-17 is the ultimate MAKE OR BREAK for GOA and GOANS. Only
time will tell. But the break, if it happens, will not be blamed for want
of deserving leadership. It has been around for the past almost 16 years

[Goanet] Beliefs vs Values

2016-04-22 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Beliefs vs Values

The Supreme Court's observation of illegal houses of worship mostly by the
roadside being an insult to God is not only a brilliant example of the use
of logic, it is also extremely funny. Do our gods have webbed feet and
forked tongues? It appears so, doesn't it?

Opus Dei founder's book of aphorisms informs us how God promises rewards of
dozens of times on the money we give away to charity, so please give
generously. His conclusion is simple: it is a good deal! Religious people
which include people who believe in God, people who don't and people who
withhold their opinion must feel disgusted when reading what the founder
has to say. It is bad enough to make someone want to shut the founder's
book forever or even throw it away. Maybe on top of one of Goa's infamous
garbage hills.

Is everything a matter of business? In gangster movies we hear again and
again this simple explanation for every wrongdoing: it is only business.
Our politicians unashamedly inform us how in politics there are no friends
or foes: it is only politics, only self interests. No right or wrong, means
or ends?

Isn't it time we elected people who subscribe to a philosophy which
reflects our values? Or are these our values?

  CLEANING ST. INEZ CREEK
 By: Stephen Dias, Dona Paula

Laxmikant Parsekar attended on Thursday a presentation by Resources
International Company about the cleaning and beautification of the St Inez
Creek.

Parsekar. It has been reported that St Inez Creek and not Nullah will be
cleaned up in two phases and Government pitches in to help CCP.

I suppose Parsekar has visited the creek prior to the presentation and
found all sorts of garbage dirt plastic material and sewage including other
illegalities around the creek. Most of the constructions are illegal and
just either on the vicinity or on the creek itself. There are people who
are residing nearby and found releasing sewage into the creek. Also it has
been found that the Creek width is narrowing day by day due to illegal
constructions. There are even toilets at the banks of Creek.

Those who are planning for short term measures by introducing aerators
funded by M/s Cipla Co. are not going to solve the problem at all, but will
only waste their time and finances.

The Panjimites thank the Management of Navhind Times for reporting this
long pending issue and happy that the Government is now pitches to help CCP
in two phases to clean up the creek.

Oh, of course the clean up will NOW be taken up. NOW that a great
INTERNATIONAL CONSULTANT with "sophisticated, expensive machinery" has been
discovered. How lucky we are!!! Our own scientists and engineers are so
third rate.

Kindly request MLA Sidharth Kuncalienker to update us on the following:

1) The status on the tender to reconstruct the box culvert at the mouth of
the creek. It was to be the simplest option to re-vitalize the creek in the
most natural way.
2) Kindly explain the fencing around the mouth of the creek on the sand bar
jutting out from the park into the river. Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues had
no clue about it.

I highly appreciate the sincerity of both the MLA and the Commissioner in
always replying to citizen's questions and being extremely approachable. No
matter what the question and how it is asked, a polite reply always comes
back. As citizens we have to applaud this.

Warm regards,

[Goanet] FORMER BOMBAY HIGH COURT JUDGES SHOULD STOP APPEARING BEFORE THE SAME HIGH COURT

2016-04-22 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It is very distressing and anguishing that over a handful of former Bombay
High Court Judges are most inappropriately appearing before the same High
Court and arguing matters before their former fellow Judges. This is very
untenable and does not augur well as Justice must not only be done but seen
to be done. It is also against the very intent and spirit of the
Constitutional mandate which forbids Judges from appearing in the same High
Court or Courts there under, where they have been Judges.

Equally unacceptable is the appearances before the same High Court by the
kith and kin of some Bombay High Court Judges. Either the kith and kin
advocates should stop appearing or the Judges should seek a transfer to
another High Court.

Infact in the very selection process of High Court Judges, there ought to
be a mechanism in place to ensure that there is no room for such unpleasant
and unfortunate rank conflict of interest. The integrity and sanctity of
the Temples of Justice must never ever be under any clout whatsoever.

Re: [Goanet] In Passing.....

2016-04-22 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Roland,

George Bush (43) so sullied the office of the President of the US during
his tenure, that a senior Republican politician said that no white man
would be elected President of the United States in his (George Bush's) life
time. At the time, I thought it was a joke. Turns out that we have had
Obama for the past seven years and we are now assured a woman will be the
next President of the USA.

Like you, I give daily thanks to the Republicans who urged Donald Trump to
compete in the Republican race. It would have been really embarrassing to
all if Rafael Cruz was nominated as the Republican candidate. Rafael
claimed, until a year or two ago, that he was not Canadian.

Then he woke up one morning and renounced his Canadian citizenship.

Re: [Goanet] SummerCamp2016: Hands-on creative technology exposure for Goan village students -- NEED YOUR HELP

2016-04-22 Thread ProjectGEIT GITP
Dear friends from Goan Press & Media,

Many thanks for the coverage many of you have given to our upcoming
creative technology-centric Summer Camp at the Central Library, Patto,
Panaji during May 2-13.

We are getting relatively more entries from city kids than from the
villages, latter being our primary focus. Hence request your sustained
support to grab attention from rural parents with increased awareness
through your mediums. To enable this we are extending the deadline for
accepting entries by another week till next Friday (29April).

Also the "Tech Balcao" documentary series on Prudent TV will showcase
Project GEIT and its work including the upcoming summer camp in the next
episode on Monday (22Apr) at 2pm, 7pm and 10:30pm. We would much appreciate
your support in creating awareness about this TV program which went on air
since last Monday (18Apr).

Thanks & regards,
Project GEIT.

At any Goan bakery, the oft-chanted mantra is - "maka pao dhya" (Gimme some
pao bread)...Goans carried the same to Bombay, out of sheer habit, asking
the baker to give them the pao-bread! Over time, it shortened itself to
makapao, denoting a Goan Christian usually. Further shortened to Mac.
