[Goanet-News] OBIT: Demi -- A Liberal, Caring and Justice-Driven Face of Goan Christianity

2016-05-16 Thread Goanet Obits
A Liberal, Caring and Justice-Driven Face of Goan Christianity

FN

Someone reading him online once accused Desmond de Sousa of
being an "angry young priest", possibly even a young upstart who
was critical of the Church in Goa. But Demi, as he was known
to his friends, clarified, without missing the irony: "Let me
assure one and all, I'm 73 years old this September [2012],
54 years a Redemptorist and 46 years a priest Among my
many illustrious students who have become my superiors over
the years are bishops, including the present Archbishop of
Goa, with whom I enjoy a very cordial relationship."

Demi came from a priviledged background, yet he spoke boldly
and without mincing words -- like the prophets of old --
against injustice and for the poor. His family has played a
prominent role in village affairs in Saligao (I remember the
'Saligao Bulletin' sold for 15 paise in the 1960s and a book
called *Floreata Saligao* authored by his septuagenarian dad
C. Hubert de Souza). And yet he was one of the few priests at
the frontlines of the ramponkar agitation in the 1970s in Goa.

If you saw him cycling along the humid roads between Porvorim
and Saligao (as he did till a few years back), you would
hardly guess that he had been the globe-trotting Executive
Secretary of the Office of Human Development (OHD) of the
Federation of Asian Bishops (FABC) for over 10 years during
the 1980s and co-ordinated the Asia-Pacific national offices
of Caritas Internationalis.

Demi passed away suddenly and without any
prolongued illness on May 14, 2016, on the
  operating table, during emergency angioplasty,
after suffering a massive heart attack just a few
hours earlier. "Those of us who knew him well and
met him often are in shock at how suddenly and
unexpectedly it all happened," wrote Mario
Mascarenhas, activist who had been an associate of
  Demi decades ago.

He was a friendly, concerned, helpful and outspoken man. When
he had something to say even about the Church, he said it
without mincingi words; you would scarcely guess that the
criticism came from a man of the cloth. In a 2012 article he
wrote for Goanet Reader [http://bit.ly/1TdilrN], titled 'The
Challenge to the Church in Goa: Revivalism or Renewal?' Fr
Desmond de Sousa CSsr acknowledged the colonial roots of the
Goan church and wrote:

...The clergy generally find it extremely difficult
to accept a more participative, co-responsible and
socially committed Church with the laity The
laity however, are deeply divided about the pace
and direction of change that renewal demands. A
paradigm shift in faith formation is needed. They
need a more inductive reflection on the daily
realities of life to discover the challenge of God
acting within these realities, rather than the
traditional deductive process of learning abstract
  truths of faith by heart.

...Some of the more enlightened laity support and
participate in the renewal process as a genuine and
necessary expression of the Catholic Church in Goa.
But the vast majority are caught up in the
revivalist spiritual awakening that is sweeping Goa.

...Will the Church in Goa continue to operate as a

question. The caliber of the Church's leadership
will be severely tested by the question of whose
  perspective will ultimately triumph!

He worked at the grassroots and on picket lines, and he
understood it. Elsewhere, Demi narrates his experiences in
meeting the young Matanhy Saldanha, the
activist-turned-politician who ironically played a crucial
role in helping the BJP return to power in Goa in 2012. He
says: "In the early 1970s during a retreat to college
students in Belgaum, I first met this rather shy, aloof,
silent 20 plus-year-old, who immediately struck me as
different. His friends made fun of him because he had dreams
of entering politics when he returned to Goa. Which
20-year-old is so focused in life?"

"Immediately I recognized his rather unusual name when
reading the news about the leader of the agitation against
Zuari Agro Chemicals polluting the land and then the sea
around Velsao. In 1975, when I was transferred to Goa, I made
it a point to renew our acquaintance. By 1977-78, I was
heavily involved with him in the Ramponcar agitation."

Some time around 1980, Fr Demi motivated a group of about

UNQUOTE:

Stephen Comments/Response:

First, let me start by saying I'm surprised with the response to my letter
from somebody from abroad who seems to be keen on meddling with affairs not
known to them in Goa.

Dr. Jose Colaco is defending his 'professional' colleagues and seems to be
insinuating that I am a lowly non-professional who doesn't understand
ethical obligation. In my opinion I am as professional as anyone. Work
ethic does not automatically get bestowed only on those with medical
degrees. But that's besides the point.

I'd like to request Dr. Jose Colaco to come down from his lofty perch high
above to see ground realities. The ground reality is that some of the best
Goa Medical College doctors’ (so called professionals) were practicing in
their private clinics after their office hours and then manipulating
prescriptions so that their customers can claim government benefits. Isn't
that cheating the government?

I have solid proof that certain professionals issued additional medicines
in their prescriptions at the request of patients so that the bill is
inflated and reimbursed through their respective office (whether Central or
State Government) after putting their own official seal later at Goa
Medical College.

This was common earlier and I got to know about it through people who used
this trick to get reimbursement. Later when the Goa Government perhaps
came to know about such discrepancies these particular doctors were asked
to stop their private practice. In many cases, working long hours after
their official hours, does drain the doctor regardless of how
'professional' they are. Good intentions are insufficient to ensure 100%
concentration while working such long hours.

Particularly surprising to me, was that Dr. Jose did not appreciate my
stand in his letter, of praising both two renowned doctors i.e Dr. Oscar
Rebello and Dr. Francisco Colaco. I also referred a case of Dr. Anthony
Mesquita, who became a scapegoat in the clinical trials issue at GMC
recently and was suspended due to political pressure. I mention this to
show that I have no animus towards medical professionals per se. As in all
'professions', some people are a credit to the profession and some are a
blot.

My request was made to the Government not to allow private practice which
is based on my observations that many so called professional doctors misuse
their position at GMC to help certain patients of their choice, cheat the
government for reimbursement and ultimately for their own benefit.

[Goanet] Island pictures

2016-05-16 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Over the weekend, I was on my arm-chair world tour.  This time it was browsing
through a picturesque book that covered about a dozen islands dotting the
borders of various countries and scattered in the Mediterranean.
I showed my wife these pictures.  And she said, "Nice pictures of Goa."  Many
of them had the 17 and 18 century buildings, one or two level houses with
porches (verandhas) and low pitched  tiled (Manglorean style curved) roofs.
The beaches had the sunset with palm trees or small boats in the foreground.
The pictures showed homes, cafes, side-streets, beaches and the harbors (used
by the local fishermen to bring  in their daily catch).  Each of these islands
play host to about a million tourists a year and have been able to RETAIN AND
SHOWCASE their culture, way of life and be a place where both tourists and
locals prosper.
With a heavy heart, I said to my wife, "Hmm ... unfortunately the pictures are
not from Goa."  So despite the infrastructure being "like-Goa"; why these
pictures could not be Goa.
1.  The roads and neighborhoods were spotlessly clean with no trash.
2.  The homes were not new but generally well-maintained and freshly painted.
3.  The tables in simple indoor and outdoor cafes (where patrons could see and
be seen) had tablecloths.
4.  No stray animals in the photographs.
5.  Other than on the beach, all wore simple, neat attires.
6.  Small little gardens with bright flowers or leaves
So what will it take for these transformations in Goa?  I think Goans and Goa
can achieve many of these.  Start small in your own neighborhood with the
cooperation of your neighbors, family and friends..
Regards, GL

…..Rappers set up a microphone and speakers on the street to reach an
audience that cannot afford the ticket prices of Mumbai’s music venues.

Such is the case for Vivian Fernandez, 25, who raps as MC Divine. He grew
up in the slums behind Mumbai airport, living alone as his father, an
alcoholic, had left and his mother worked abroad. It was thanks to a friend
with a CD player that he first heard American hip-hop and one day in 2013,
sitting out on the steps of his neighbourhood, Fernandez performed a rap he
had written in Hindi street slang.

Inspired, his friends clubbed together to raise money so Fernandez could
record the song, Yeh Mera Bombay, in a local studio. And he filmed his
first music video using a mobile phone in the streets outside his house.
Once uploaded on to YouTube, the song went viral.

“I wanted to show what real life was like for people like me; no guns, no

In the past, Divine’s songs have addressed corruption and even the brutal

all singing my songs,” the rapper added.

Fernandez, who has been named by BBC Asian network as one of the top

[Goanet] INTERNAL DANGEROUS THREATENING OF OUR DEMOCRACY

2016-05-16 Thread John Gomes
DANGEROUS TRENDSWhat  had shocked me was a police officer saying "I am scared
to arrest him because if elected he may become a minister and tomorrow I may
have to bow down to him!". With brawn and money power deciding elections,
elected representatives and their kin are causing havoc in citizen's lives! The
investigation report of the Jat stir where 90 officials (incl SDM,DSP etc) have
been found negligent, watching, doing nothing to stop loot, damage and arson
because they felt if they take action without orders, and someone gets killed,
the government will not support them is frightening! People are being beaten
up, arson and looting going on in front of their eyes and under the Criminal
Procedure Code and the oath they take to maintain law and order, it is the
police duty and responsibility to take action, no orders required. Why this
attitude under the BJP superior (as claimed) governance? Rocky Yadav driving a
1.5 crore SUV shot dead Aditya with an Italian sophisticated pistol. Turns out
his father Bindi Yadav rose from a bicycle thief to dreaded gangster to member
of Lalu Yadav RJD and then to Nitish Kumar JDU, cornering government and
development contracts. Now reportedly he is a super rich business man owning
Malls, hotels,15 petrol pumps, with business interests in roads, constructions
and liquor! With money and influence, his wife Manorama Devi became a member of
the Bihar Legislative Council. The people by and large specifically voted for
Modi as Prime Minister of India and not the BJP. These are dangerous trends and
I do not see Prime Minister acting swiftly and decisively to rectify these
matters that are internally and dangerously threatening our democracy! OVERDUE
BADLY NEEDED POLICE AND ADMINISTRATIVE REFORMS JUST NOT HAPENING.

*‘HEAT IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR US’*

*VASCO (GOA):* The morning after at the Team Hotel, Coach Nicolai Adam in
his shorts waves to his boys and the boys follow him like the Piped Piper
of Hamelin. “Come on boys,” as he steps into the Swimming Pool. The sea of
talent follows. The Coach leads by example.

The Arabian Sea, barely some 50 meters away, spurred on by the breeze and
maybe by the dark clouds overhead, thunders with all its might on the sand.
“The Sea is most dangerous at this time. Monsoon is to arrive soon. It just
washes the sand away,” quips a local.

At the Pool, the boys wash away their tired limbs at the recovery session.

Goa at this time of the Year is hot and humid. “But we don’t have any
problems playing in this heat,” Nicolai declares to www.the-aiff.com. “We
did our training sessions in Goa in the last five weeks in the heat. It’s
not a problem,” he adds, and only after a brief pause spreads his hands
around, smiles and says” It’s much cooler today.”

The overnight rain had an effect early morning in Goa but with the Sun at
his scorching rage as the day progressed, it has turned out more humid.

Did you have a look at Tanzania?

“The boys look a lot like the Players from South Africans when we played
there. They are tall but not muscular. They played a very good match
against USA. It will be another hard day for us,” he maintains.

Tanzanian Coach Bakari Shime, also insists, that it will be a “hard match”
against India. “India are the hosts. The hosts are always the strongest. On
top of that, India have been preparing so long. It will be a hard game,” he
says in one breath.

Only last night Malaysian Coach Somasundram Periasamy had certified “India
are a fit Team.”

“India were physically fit and better than us. They had momentum with which
they attacked and it cost us. Their wingers were very impressive,” he had
uttered at the Official post-match Press Conference.

Nicolai, nevertheless, speaks of what is more to be done. “We also have to
be critical of ourselves. A 2-2 draw is not enough for what we have to play
in the future,” he asserts. “The boys made too many mistakes. We need to
avoid that. That’s how I see it, especially when you are the better Team on
the field. You just can’t afford that. So we need to improve on that
aspect,” he informs.

The roar of the waves prompt you to take a glance to the Sea. The Beach,
despite “being cool,” is almost empty.

“Coming back from 0-2 is quite good. I feel the spectators liked the
spectacle. We hope more people come to the ground to cheer for us.”

*Tickets for the Tournament are available online on www.bookmyshow.com
while admission for 18 and below is free.*

*The match will also be live streamed on Indian Football Team’s Official
Facebook Page.*
