Today is Goa Statehood day but there is nothing to celebrate about. Goans
now  realize the trap they got into by craving for statehood. An illusion
gone awfully sour. With statehood the common man has lost but only the
politicians have become crorepatis. As a Union territory, we were ably
managed with 28 MLAs and a cabinet of four. Today Goa is totally mismanaged
with 40 MLAs and a jumbo cabinet of 12.


Very frankly the performance of the current BJP Government would have to be
rated at Zero, given that Goans were promised the moon with Zero Tolerance
to Corruption and Good Governance. It has been only U turns and rampant
corruption all the way. The cavalier manner in which the current BJP
government is heartlessly and mercilessly destroying Goa should be a matter
of great concern.


It is distressing to see and be witness to the continuing rampant
destruction and devastation of Goa. In 2012 the BJP had promised a
‘Parivartan’ and ‘Acche Din’, but Goa is sadly by the day just getting
further corroded beyond recognition. It should have been the endeveaour of
those in power to at least salvage and safeguard what remains of Goa.
Unfortunately Goa is getting defaced at an electrifying speed. Posterity
will never forgive the current rulers for their selfish and dubious role in
this further irreparable damage and destruction of what was once a
beautiful Goa, the Paradise of the East. Sorrowing lies our Goa.

In today's Goa edition of Times of India on page 2 the notorious and
controversial Advocate General of Goa Atmaram Nadkarni besides other
blabbering has finally self-confessed what was already known to us all.
Atmaram says "I don't possess qualities to be a Judge".


This implies that he was and also continues to be unfit to be an Advocate
General too as Article 165 of the Constitution of India mandates that an
Advocate General shall be a person who is qualified to be appointed as a
High Court Judge.


A good confession Saves the Soul and the Heart, if you have one. And this
long overdue confession by Atmaram Nadkarni who has been rehabilitated as
Additional Solicitor General of India has saved the Indian Judiciary too of
its darkest day. Thank You At_maram Nad_karni. Jai ho.

Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Panjim at the Shrine of Our
Lady of Fatima in Don Bosco Panjim on Saturday, 28 May 2016.



“It is like Magic” is a collection of poems about important events,
significant episodes in the life of the author and about people she loves
in her life. It has a blend of romantic poetry, epics, free verse, animal
imagery and performance poetry.



Christal Ferrao is originally from Divar and lives in Merces, Goa. She is
currently pursuing her graduation with a triple major in Communication and
Media, English and Psychology at Christ University, Bengaluru. She is an
alumnus of St Brigittine Convent, Seventh Day Adventist, Our Lady of the
Rosary and Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Panjim.


The book is printed by Rama Harmalkar and published by Broadway Publishing

Compared to its predecessor, the Government has fared a lot better.
However, compared to Parrikar's 2000 - 2005 tenure, this Government has
been a pale shadow. After 7 years of misrule by the previous regime, people
had plenty of hopes & aspirations & in Parrikar, they saw a man who could
deliver but sadly, this Government has fallen short to deliver on its
promises despite being in a comfortable majority. Posts of Lokayukta & RTI
commissioners have been filled only towards the fag end of the tenure which
should have been a priority for a Government which came to power on the
plank of Zero tolerance towards corruption. Wheels of administration are
moving slowly & files moving even slower from one table to another. For a
common man to get justice remains a distant dream with cases lingering in
courts and similar being the scenario on various other fronts. Goa, a world
renowned tourist destination, still has heaps of garbage along its streets,
which is disappointing. Sports infrastructure has been created but rarely
put to good use and no proper sports policy in place. Reforms are happening
at a very slow pace and very little is being done to bring about
substantial improvement in overall governance. When the proposed IT Park
will actually come up, nobody knows. On the brighter side, the Government
has given a lot of good schemes to the people and the health insurance
scheme for all its citizens is another feather in its cap. Construction of
wider roads, flyovers & bridges, infrastructure works, Smart city, etc. are
some of their positive efforts and achievements which need to be
appreciated. On a scale of 1 to 10, if I were to rate the previous
Government at 2, then I would rate present one at 4. Average at best but
short of expectations. With barely a few months to go now, the Government
needs to wake up & pull up their socks. Administration needs to be
overhauled and time bound delivery of services must become a reality rather
than being just another bill passed in the Assembly. What we expect the
Government to give us is a clean, beautiful and garbage free Goa with
eco-friendly Industries, job creation and incentives for the youth, proper
traffic management and public mobility plan, tougher laws and speedy
justice, a corruption free environment, friendly and responsive officers to
attend to public needs, crime control and good policing. Let’s hope they
are listening.

'*Diamonds*...' the latest from the Goa1556 stable is a 'good' book. That's
because it seeks to provide a path for those families which suffer from
alcoholism by publicizing the work of Al - Anon.
Before talking about the book I think it is worth pointing out the
difference between A.A. and Al - Anon.

A.A. or Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization which helps alcoholics to
achieve sobriety and stay sober by a kind of group therapy. It basically
has what they call a 12 step program which offers guidelines for "recovery
from addiction, compulsion or behavioural problems. The process involves
the following: admitting that one cannot control one's alcoholism,
addiction or compulsion; recognizing a Higher Power that can give strength;
examining past errors with the help of a 'sponsor' (experienced member);
making amends for these errors; learning to live a new life with a new code
of behaviour; helping others with the same alcoholism, addictions, or
compulsion."

While drinking alcohol is an agreeable activity for many, it can turn into
alcoholism which is a disease as sadly it does all over the world and Goa
is no exception. Now *provided that the alcoholic recognizes and admits
that he is suffering from a disease and wishes to recover from it*, A.A.
can be a very helpful place to effect this recovery because the members are
usually all recovering alcoholics themselves and they know what the
alcoholic is going through and what kind of support is needed.

However what is not often known that this is the disease of alcoholism can
affect spouses, children and families in general too in financially,
emotionally and other damaging ways. This is where the less known
organization of Al-Anon comes into the picture.

Society is not very helpful in understanding alcoholics and even less in
understanding the problems which families face or in offering them the
support needed to recover from their problems.

Al - Anon and related organizations like Alateen and  tries to offer solace
and a recovery program to spouses and children and friends of alcoholics.
Basically *Diamonds Under My Feet *tells the stories of 21 people which
explain the trauma that the families of alcoholics undertgo and how with
the help of Al - Anon they were able to make their dysfunctional lives
meaningful again.

It's the kind of book that will offer a way out for some and keep others
forewarned. The author Maria Viency Cardozo who is a freelance journalist
from Raia deserves to be complimented for her passion in putting this book
together.

T he government might be promoting Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, but the
villagers of Shirgao are upset over public toilets that have been
closed for the last eight years, causing an inconvenience to the
people.

It may be stated that the government, under a zilla panchayat scheme,
had constructed two toilets near the famous Lairai Temple in 2007 and
they were inaugurated at the hands of then Opposition leader Manohar
Parrikar.

Shirgao sarpanch Babuso Gaonkar has expressed great displeasure over
the government toilets in the village remaining unused for more than
eight years.

“ It is almost eight years, but the toilets are locked and no one is
using them. Time and again we have told the MLA about this structure,
which is locked and is of no use to the public, but he only gives us
assurances that he will look into the matter,” said Gaonkar.

He added, “ It is a waste of government funds. We request the
government to either handover the structure to us or give us
permission to demolish it.” The residents of Shirgao are also upset
over the plight of this unused structure.

“ This toilet could be of great help, especially to devotees who come
to the village during the Zatra, as there is no other facility in the
village. This year, the panchayat had to install mobile toilets for
the public,” said a resident.

He added, “ People from all over Goa and also from neighbouring States
come for this zatra. It is surprising that despite proper toilets
being built by the government, it remains closed.” Two toilets were

the last training session (in Guwahati), a list of 20 Players would be
departing for Laos from Delhi early Tuesday (May 31) morning for India’s
