It has been widely reported in print and TV media that both American presidential presumptive candidates are overwhelmingly distrusted by the American public. Is this a reflection on the candidates or electorate? For more than two decades, the public has been fed conspiracy theories ad-nausea. These theories and conjunctures has been booming business to the creators and spin-masters of these theories who write books, make movies, deliver paid speeches, and be hired as talking-heads on print, radio and TV. Truth-be-told these conspiracy theories are low-cost entertainment from the entire spectrum of print, radio and TV media (who in the process have made a ton of money); and are great fund-raising tools for interested organizations and political parties. We-the-public enjoyed these titillating bits of half-true factoids proudly remembering them as superior knowledge. Hence these conspiracy theories are not allowed to die. Yet, on occasion, the paid pundits (who peddled the theories to major medial outlets) have pleaded guilty and gone to jail for presenting false credentials like working for the CIA. Now the internet has been a cost-free media for anyone to create, plant and circulate false stories or conclusions; which then are recirculated as genuine articles feeding the growing ignorance even among serious and articulate individuals, spokespersons and political hacks. Likely we the electorate have difficulties separating truth from fiction and in the process distrust ourselves and/or reflect the distrust on others. And which better public figure to reflect the distrust than the political candidates. Now some Republican leaders are openly concerned that Trump may ferment "trickle-down racism" as a further extension to the conspiracy theories. The BJP while in the Opposition had demanded the resignation of then Minister Dayanand Narvekar when he was charge sheeted. So they should walk the talk now and there cannot be double standards. Infact in a landmark Judgment the Supreme Court in 2014 advised not to induct in the cabinet charge sheeted persons facing trial. The Court said that criminalization of politics destroyed people’s faith in democracy and persons, howsoever, high he/she might be could not be exempted from equal treatment. It said constitutional morality, good governance and constitutional trust expected good sense not to recommend any person with criminal charges from being appointed as a Minister. The Court further observed “criminalisation of politics is anathema to the sacredness of democracy. It is worth saying that systemic corruption and sponsored criminalisation can corrode the fundamental core of elective democracy and, consequently, the constitutional governance.” The Court also said: “A democratic republic polity hopes and aspires to be governed by a Government which is run by the elected representatives who do not have any involvement in criminal offences. The Canacona Police has charge sheeted Goa Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar and seven others in the criminal case that was registered against them in the 2009 Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary rioting case. The charge sheet has been filed by the Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Prashal Dessai before the Canacona Judicial Magistrate First Class Sarika Faldessai.
