contest which went the full distance. Anushka Kuvelkar, who has played at
the National level in juniors, was partnering Navneet Nasnodkar while
Pranjal Chimulkar, who too has been in good nick, partnering Sunny Sawant.
The first two sets saw plenty of errors from both sides and a see saw
battle. With the set scores tied at one set a piece, the match finally
gained momentum in the third set and went neck and neck till 13 points
each. But Sunny & Pranjal prevailed with some inspired play towards the end
to register an upset 21-11, 14-21, 21-16 win over Navneet & Anushka, the
West Zone Mixed doubles runners up of last season.

In Veterans 45 + Doubles, top seeds Rohan Pai Panandikar and Ayub C.K. were

In the last match of the day, the Men’s doubles, top seeds Navneet

[Goanet] Bahrain Makes The Wrong Moves

2016-06-20 Thread Roland
It was bound to happen but it needn't have taken the turn it has.

Like the Eastern Provinces of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain has a majority Shia
population living under a minority Sunni ruling family.

These Shias are all Arabic speaking Iranians from their west coast like the
Abadan area who emigrated to and settled in the Gulf countries generations ago
as traders with Indian buyers and exporters connections. They have no political
ambitions and desire nothing more than to trade and prosper.

The Bahraini government recognized this, gave them citizenship and saw their
country prosper because of them. While Saudi Arabia had vast oil assets,
Bahrain's advantage was merely its strategic location and its trading ability.
It tried to be an offshore banking centre in in 1970s but that came to nought
when Dubai overtook it.

The Bahraini Shias are modern, their thinking progressive and their women
almost western, like Iranian women during the Shah of Iran's time.

During the Arab Spring young Bahraini men saw an opportunity to seek a more
liberal treatment from the ruling Al-Khaifah family who never gave them the
rights they deserved due to their population numbers.

They took to the streets but demonstrated peacefully and it was easy to give
them some sops that would have satisfied and quietened them. They were not
after all asking for control of their destiny or of the hitherto peaceful
island.

This might have happened if the ruling family had not panicked and asked big
bro Saudi Arabia for help in quelling the disturbances.

Like in Yemen, SA came to Bahrain with a heavy hand. It was not so much coming
to the aid of a Gulf Cooperation member as it was exerting their pre-eminence
in the area and warning off Iran from taking advantage.

Though Iran has always been looking for an entry into Gulf matters, the area
being on its doorstep, what really drives the ayatollahs in Tehran is their
hatred of the Sunni infidels whom they see as persecutors of their Shia
populations.

The Shia rebels in Bahrain want little to do with their guardians in Iran but
the Sunni rulers in the Gulf don't believe this to be true. That is what
happens when you have a mortal enemy. You see his hand even when it is absent.

The latest news is that Bahrain has stripped one of its Ayatollahs of Bahraini
citizenship. This is a big trigger for escalation of the conflict. It may well
be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Even the US which has a naval base
on the island has seen the lack of wisdom of doing this. Not because they prize
the stability of Bahrain, but because they see the unfolding events may lead to
the closing down of their base if the Al Khalifahs are eventually overthrown
and democracy of numbers, in this case the Shias is ushered in.

Bahrain is a beautiful island, full of history and Indian trade connection. The
rulers were once very much pro-Indian and early on, from the 1940s, Bahrain was
a mecca for Goans in search of good jobs, in banking, oil and associated
services and in telecommunications, mainly with Intenational Aer-radio and
Cable & Wireless. The island was known for its liberal rules and alcohol laws
and Goan, Mangalorean and Catholic clubs flourished in such an atmosphere. In
its diversity, Goans enjoyed prosperity and comfort for many years. It will
always hold a special place in Goan hearts.

The Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) actually commented on this one.
Something to ponder ... But, worth a broad smile!
Amazing, but true, if you think about it!The importance of accuracy in your tax
return,
The CRA has returned the Tax Return to a man in Canada after he
apparently answered one of the questions.
In response to the question, .. "Do you have anyone dependent on you?"
The man wrote: .. "2.1 million illegal immigrants, 1.1 million crackheads,  4.4
million unemployable scroungers,   80,000 criminals in over 85 prisons plus 450
idiots in Parliament, thousands of 'politicians' and  an entire group that call
themselves 'Senators'
Th CRA stated that the response he gave was unacceptable. The man's response
back to CRA was, ... "Who did I leave out ?" |

[Goanet] YOGA in schools from July.

2016-06-20 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão
I am not in the least surprised that our Chief Minister announced that, come
July, YOGA training will be started across the State in 180 schools by
employing 180 yoga teachers on Contract. After all, contract labour is
government's hallmark to kick them out later.

But my main question to Hon'ble Chief Minister, Mr. Parsekar, who I presume was
a Head Master, is that what and how will it benefit a child in their upbringing
school years.

Can Mr. Parsekar clarify or cite any scientific basis That YOGA helps in the
upbringing of a child?

Can he cite any genuine scientific research that shows benefits of Yoga?

Is Yoga Internationally accepted as a requisite for a child's benefit and
upbringing, and advised by UNESCO or any other International Educational
Organisation?

Or is the government pushing down the throats of people whatever they believe,
diktats that have NO scientific basis?

Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.

Re: [Goanet] [GOANET]: PLEASE SEE IF THIS ARTICLE OF JOSE MARIA MIRANDA CAN BE PUBLISHED WITH MY COMMENTS

2016-06-20 Thread Eugene Correia
It was the time when Indians were barred from top-notch hotels in India.
Colonization promoted discrimination. South Africa wasn't different. No
harping back to the Portuguese days. We today Lambert and Sinari feel that
freedom has bought Goa to its present state, they must also realize that
it's Goans who are in charge of Goa, no doubt it's a national party which
is ruling. Democracy gets the people you vote for. Some of the guys in the
Assembly should never have been there. These people still enjoy their
constituents vote. Blaming the FF isn't the answer. Finding a solution to
the present mess is the way forward. Some hearts will keep bleeding for the
Portuguese. So be it.

[Goanet] Yoga session planned during doctors conference

2016-06-20 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

The IMA Bardez branch has planned a Yoga session for its Conference of doctors
in September this year.

Have the Medical Profession in Bardez stooped and bowed to UNQUALIFIED levels
from the science profession they are qualified? Is Hindutva taken priority over
Science for them?

http://www.navhindtimes.in/yoga-session-planned-during-doctors-conference/

Yoga is nothing but a combination of breathing and stretch exercises and
meditation. There in no scientific research on Yoga. One cannot generalise that
Yoga is beneficial to all.

I feel our Bardez doctors should feel ashamed that even Indian Physiotherapists
Association have refused to bow down to the government's intolerance to science
and promoting their Hindutva myths in the science field.

http://www.freepressjournal.in/india/physiotherapists-refuse-to-push-yoga-say-no-evidence-of-benefits/863056

I do hope better sense prevail among these wayward medical doctors.

[Goanet] EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS CANNOT BE BUSINESS DENS

2016-06-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Schools and Colleges are sacred Temples of learning imparting knowledge and
grooming students to be future pillars of our nation.

Sadly over the last few years running these educational institutions is
turning into a business enterprise with all and sundry vying to seize it as
a golden goose. Centers of learning cannot be reduced to dens of business
opportunities.

The Rosary High School at Miramar, the ownership of which has been taken
over by Tony Rodrigues who himself is incapable of reading and writing is a
glaring example as to how an educational institution has been usurped over
as a business venture.

The absolutely uneducated Tony Rodrigues might have had a good innings as a
politician and even became the Mayor of Panaji but managing a school
properly is all together a different ball game. A mission impossible
without at least the basic academic qualifications.

Tony Rodrigues after buying over the Rosary High School is now the Chairman
of Executive Committee of the Rosary Education Society. Ironically the
academically totally blank Tony Rodrigues is also the Chairman of the
Rosary High School Managing Committee. How can someone who does not know to
read and write run a school? Infact the law should require that those
managing schools possess at least some basic educational qualifications.

Section 21 of the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 (RTE),
mandates the formation of School Management Committee (SMC) to monitor the
working of the school, prepare and recommend school development plan,
monitor the utilization of the grants received from the government.
Implementation of the RTE directives ought to be examined and especially
funds utilization has to be scrutinized to ensure that those heading the
Educational institutions have not pocketed funds meant for the students and
welfare of education.

There needs to be a detailed inquiry into the financial and other
irregularities at the Rosary High School now being mismanaged as a business
cum family undertaking.

No school or college can be allowed to illegally extort unlawful donations
from parents. It is incumbent upon the Government to ensure that all
educational institutions issue a receipt for every paisa collected from
students and parents. The parents should flatly refuse to pay money under
the table for which no receipts are being issued. It should be Zero
Tolerance to Corruption at the door step of every educational institution.

[Goanet] BJP PROMOTES FAMILY RAJ IN HIGH COURT

2016-06-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The BJP government in Goa has selected Saresh Lotlikar to be the next
Advocate General but has also announced that the outgoing incumbent Atmaram
Nadkarni now appointed as the Additional Solicitor General in Delhi will
continue as a virtually super AG and represent the State in some creamy
matters including Mining cases. Are we to presume that the government is of
the opinion that Saresh Lotlikar is not competent enough and has only
anointed him to be a lame duck AG?

To add to Goa’s deepening financial crisis the government has resolved to
appoint Dattaprasad Lawande who is Atmaram Nadkarni’s very close relative
as the Additional Advocate General.

Ironically Atmaram Nadkarni as Advocate General always rightly opined that
Goa being a very small state did not require to be burdened with an
Additional Advocate General. But he has now made a U turn only to benefit
his Parivar. Goa is indeed in a state of organized chaos, disorder and
lawlessness.

Perhaps you would do well to reflect on an extract from one of Thomas Reid's
essays:

"In every chain of reasoning, the evidence of the last conclusion can be no
greater than that of the weakest link of the chain, whatever may be the
strength of the rest."

Also Marshall, I didn't "throw muck" on anybody. All I asked was whether there
were such experiences in Goa.

You can't apply double standards - vilify the BJP when anti minority actions
take place and then defend your own community's inequities.

Freedom Fighter’s Unfortunate Display Of Anger Against Fellow Goans – by
Jose Maria Miranda

Sunday - Jun 19, 2016

It is an undisputed fact that Goans, during the foreign dictatorial rule,
displayed much more courage and determination in fighting issues concerning
Goa and Goans than they show today. It was not alone in matters of civil
liberties, freedom of expression, end of Portuguese colonial rule,
autonomy, etc. but also those related to the State and people’s welfare
that Goans stood up for fearlessly and tenaciously. While those who
demanded civil liberties and autonomy under the Portuguese were looked upon
with suspicion and considered persona non grata, those who demanded the
ouster of the Portuguese and Goa’s merger with India were treated badly and
many incarcerated and deported, some having suffered even torture for
several years.

These people who suffered both physically and psychologically to attain
freedom for us ought to have commanded great love and respect from the
beneficiaries of this great gift. Unfortunately, that does not seem be the
case. And for the sake of fairness, I must emphatically say that it is not
right to paint all the Freedom Fighters with the same brush. I have the
greatest regard, and surely many do, for the genuine ones. A few, I
understand, have not even availed of the pension and I salute them. But
this is immaterial here.

However, what is regrettable is that some who do, were apparently charged
with other offences and turned into “freedom fighters”. Until a few years
back, people from all over the country were still being enrolled as FFs –
under what circumstances, why so late and where were they for half a
century, is still an enigma. It may be interesting to know their ages. But
such enrolments, without a whimper from the genuine FFs, have immensely
lowered their prestige in the eyes of the people. Secondly, and this is a
resentment I fully share, the FFs did nothing after the take- over to
safeguard the interests and address the concerns of Goans against the
inevitable invasion of outsiders with serious repercussions to our
demography and our own existence. On the contrary, some people, not
necessarily FFs, in their enthusiasm to please the new rulers, shot down
attempts in that direction. The inevitable eventually happened and this is
perhaps the main reason for this resentment, which was not witnessed some
decades back. May I quote here FFs like Lambert Mascarenhas who asserted
that he preferred the Goa of Portuguese days and Prabhakar Sinari who
lamented that Liberation had only benefited politicians, lobbies and
migrants? Thirdly, hardly any FF has been vocal or active against the
outrageous destruction of Goa and Goans, the corruption and loot witnessed
in the last few decades.

A few FFs gave recently a call to the Government to “punish” Goans who
registered their birth in Portugal, claiming that these were fully aware of
what they were doing. Any true blooded Goan who has love and concern for
his Goan brethren would have appealed to the Government to find a way out
for these people for the simple reasons that they themselves have not
sought Portuguese citizenship, which they could easily do if that was their
intention, and even if they did, they would go to UK or elsewhere, for
Portugal can badly manage jobs or accommodation for their own people. Far
from it, they called for them to be punished.

I must tell these honourable gentlemen: i) Had safeguards been ensured by
you and had you fought for the rights of the Goans for a decent livelihood,
those who chose to leave, much against their will, some leaving their dear
behind, did so solely in search of livelihood and to support their
families. ii) Their decision is not out of love for Portugal, which they
have never seen or will ever see, but out of an opportunity that arose,
which could save them from penury or misery. iii) Their decision is no
different from millions of Indians who have acquired foreign nationality
and refuse to be back despite offer of good jobs. iv) Goa does not belong
to you and me, who are on our way out, as much as it does to these young
people who love Goa dearly but were constrained to leave it behind.

It is surely imprudent for Goans who are doing reasonably well here to
leave Goa for an uncertain situation abroad. The target of FFs being Goans
who have only registered their birth, it is obvious that they wish to
deprive them of privileges both in India and in Portugal, as the latter
does not concede any benefits of settlement, travel, vote, etc to such
solely registered individuals.

My appeal to the FFs who have voiced their views is: Your anger against the
Portuguese is perhaps understandable, though the generation responsible for
your ill-treatment may be no more. But do not extend it to your own Goan
brethren. Vassalo

Copyright-free material edging out Canadian educational texts

Plunging educational book sales like 'falling off a cliff'

By Nigel Hunt, CBC News Posted: Jun 19, 2016 5:00 AM ET Last Updated:
Jun 19, 2016 12:17 PM ET

http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/copyright-law-educational-books-1.3640331

At the inaugural Canadian Writers' Summit, an international panel
compared notes on global pressure to loosen copyright laws.

Are Canadian students being forced to learn from foreign textbooks?

That's the concern of John Degen, executive director of the Writers'
Union of Canada.

"I hear again and again from professors and from teachers saying that
they simply don't feel they have access to enough Canadian works right
now," he told CBC News.

"And they have to go elsewhere. Their institutions are insisting that
they use only free material, and a lot of free material is coming from
outside of Canada."

Photo:
John Degen, executive director of the Writers' Union of Canada, says an
increasing amount of his time is spent fighting for authors to be paid
for their work. (CBC)

The reason, according to Degen, is the recent changes made to Canada's
copyright laws that exempt educational institutions from paying certain
fees they used to pay.

Those changes may have been great for shrinking school-board budgets,
but they're hurting Canadian writers and publishers, some of which are
getting out of the business altogether or vastly reducing what they print.

As authors gathered this week for the first-ever Canadian Writers'
Summit in Toronto, getting paid for their work was on their minds. It
was standing room only at one panel highlighting that, in the age of the
internet, the pressure to loosen copyright laws is growing worldwide.

"We want our TV, we want our movies, we want our music and now we want
our books as cheap as possible, if not free," Degen said.

As a result, writers in Canada are making less than ever, with 80 per
cent earning an income (from their writing) below the poverty line,
according to a 2015 Writers' Union survey of its members and other
writers' incomes.

"Nobody can afford to work for free," Degen said.

"If there's no economy for our work, then the work simply won't be done."

Sales drop like 'falling off a cliff'
The effect is not just being felt by writers. A few years ago, Emond
Publishing sold more than $1 million worth of books to high schools
annually. Now, said president Paul Emond, it's dropped to about $100,000.

"That's what falling off a cliff in the publishing business looks like,"
he said.

Paul Emond says his company's high school publishing program 'became
unsustainable' largely due to changes in Canada's copyright regulations.

Schools that formerly bought a class set of 20 to 30 books — for use by
perhaps hundreds of kids — started buying just a single copy of the same
book, Emond explained. They then scanned or photocopied portions to
distribute to students.

When sales plummeted, Emond made the tough decision to stop publishing
books for the high school market.

"It was simply not sustainable," he said.

He's not alone in his struggle to survive in the changing educational
market. Oxford University Press ended its Canadian textbook publishing
program in 2014. Last year, Nelson Education, Canada's largest
educational publisher, sought bankruptcy protection and had to restructure.

'Not what the government intended'
The issue dates back to 2012, when Canada's Copyright Act was updated
and education was added to the list of fair dealing exemptions from
paying copyright royalties. A Supreme Court ruling the same year
specified that "short excerpts" for educational purposes could be copied
without payment.

That allowed schools and universities to stop paying fees to copy and
use excerpts of authors' works. Educational associations have defined
"short" to include up to 10 per cent of a work, a chapter of a book or
an article from a periodical.

Degen disagrees with that interpretation.

"We think it's a real overreach and not what the government intended
when they added education as a category," he said.

An age of disruption
However, some feel blaming the copyright laws for the pinch that writers
and publishers are feeling is unfair.

"I have some sympathy for book publishers who are living in an age of
disruption," said Paul Davidson, president of Universities Canada, an
organization that has advised universities on what the changed copyright
laws allow.

"But to put all the blame on fair dealing seems misplaced."

According to Davidson, library acquisition budgets have actually risen.

"We've seen a 40 per cent increase in spending on intellectual property.
Now that doesn't strike me as being a difficult circumstance."
