Oops. again. In original note, I wanted to say Neville is the "only Asian

[Goanet] Donald Trump on the stock market: 'It's all a big bubble'

2016-08-09 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Donald Trump on the stock market: 'It's all a big bubble'
By Jeff Cox
9th august, 2016
CNBC.com

Count Donald Trump among the ranks of those who don't think too much of the
stock market as a sound place to put money.

A day after making a widely watched public address on his economic plan,
the Republican presidential nominee advised against betting on Wall Street.

The big problem, as Trump sees it: The low interest rate environment
fostered by the Federal Reserve that has coincided with a 227 percent
market gain since the financial crisis lows.

"If rates go up, you're going to see something that's not pretty," the
billionaire businessman told Fox News during a Tuesday morning phone
interview. "It's all a big bubble."

Worries that the Fed has created a market bubble have shadowed the
second-longest bull market in history as the central bank has kept its key
rate near zero and expanded its balance sheet by $3.8 trillion in order to
pump liquidity into the financial system.

The market is not anticipating a change to rates anytime soon, with traders
most recently indicating just a 47.6 percent chance of a hike by the end of
the year. However, the probability has been edging higher.

Trump's call comes as other big Wall Street names like Jeff Gundlach,
George Soros and Carl Icahn have warned of looming market dangers. However,
the S 500 stock market gauge is up 6.7 percent this year.

Trump noted that he has dabbled in the market successfully — "I did like 50
stocks just for fun, because I'm not a person that really believes in it
too much," he told Fox — but cautioned against it.

"I wouldn't do it," he said.

Folks,
This Donald is on the ascent - moving away from being a clown and into
being something else.

I wonder if he knows where everyone's pension is invested.

[Goanet] Goa Film Awards

2016-08-09 Thread Eugene Correia
Nachom-ai Kumpasar got the most awards at the State Film Awards. I don't
know the criteria for the state awards but saw that Special Jury Award for
Best Actresss (Konkani) were given to female star Palomi Ghosh, and Special
Jury Award for Best Actor (Konkani) was given to Vijay Maurya, while the
Best Actor was given to John D'Silva (Konkani) for Home Sweet Home 1 and
the Best Actress (Konkani) given to Anagha Joshi for Nirmon. Don't know if
the Special Awards were given for the first time. Or, if they were given
for some other special reasons.
Incidentally, John D'Silva also acts in Nachom-ia Kumpasar in the role of
an aide to the actor.
I saw Nachom-ai Kumpasar on Sunday, screened for the second time in
Toronto, as part of Viva Goa, the renewed annual celebration of Goan
culture and cuisine.
I was in Goa when the movie was released and was asked to watch it by a
journalist friend. I gave it a missed because it was at night and transport
from Panjim to get to a friend's place in Santa Cruz would be a problem.
To me, it seemed a "feel-good" film. Seeing the movie I now understood why
that people in Goa saw it many times over and also had good reception
elsewhere. The music sustained it, and Palomi's acting gave it an edge.
Unmindful what the credits said that the movie was "fictitious" it was
clear that the script was based on the Chris-Lorna love affair. Lorna's
voice ruled the movie. Donald Colaco, the producer, informed me that Palomi
sang two of the songs in the movie.
Knowing the Chris-Lorna story very well, the script didn't run true to the
real life. Yeah, the "reel" life seems dramatic and at times unrealistic.
The director has taken a good amount of "cinematic license" to bring to the
screen one of the most talked-about romances in the Indian music and tiatr
world.
It was heartening to learn that Palomi picked up Konkani in 20 days. I
could discern her "lisping" of many Konkani words. Even Vijay's Konkani was
not "perfect", as his name suggests he's a Gowd Saraswat or a Mangalorean.
Whatever reasons the movie was said to be dedicated to the Goan "unsung
heroes" of music, especially those who contributed lot to Indian Hindi film
music, is something that I found very indigestible. I feel it was a ploy to
"camouflage" the movie that was outrightly based on the tragic but
tantalising Chris-Lorna love tale.
The director or producer may have their reason or answer, but to me it was
deceitful that the movie was meant to honour those who served the Indian
Bollywood music industry, musicians such as Anthony Xavier Vaz, popularly
known as Chic Chocolate, Frank Fernand, Anthony Gonsalves and Sebastian
D'Souza.
Chris Perry and Lorna Cordeiro are both named fictitiously as Lawrence Vaz
and Donna.

If you harvest pepper when all of it is ripe, it does not produce
the best flavor.

You have to harvest all your pepper when only a few berries are ripe.
After removing from the stalks they are kept in boiling water for
minutes and then drained.

After which dried in the sun for several days.

[Goanet] Twentieth Sunday of the Year

2016-08-09 Thread Jude Botelho
09-Aug-2016
Dear Friend,
There are moments in life when we cannot be silent, when we are called to take
a stand, when we have to stand for justice and be counted, but often we are
afraid and lack the courage of our convictions. The coward dies a thousand
deaths, the brave man dies but once! Christianity is not about making us feel
comfortable but about standing for God and for justice for all. If we stand for
God, God will stand by us. Have a ‘faith-strengthening’ weekend! -Fr. Jude
Sun Ref.: Twentieth Sunday: “I waited for the Lord! He heard me and saved me”
14-Aug-2016Jer. 38: 4-6, 8-10;          Heb. 12: 1-4;          Luke 7: 1-17;

Jeremiah had the unpleasant task of warning the people that if they continued
in their corrupt way of life and did not repent and return to God their nation
would be destroyed. The people did not like Jeremiah’s warnings and complained
that his message was demoralizing the people. He was accused of treason and
punished by being lowered in a cistern where he was stuck in the mud until he
was rescued. Jeremiah knew he had to speak the truth and warn the people no
matter what the consequences for his life. Despite his pain, the prophet
remained faithful to his mission.
Courage to confrontIn the 1920s an English adventurer named Mallory led an
expedition to conquer Mount Everest. His first, second and even his third
attempt, with an experienced team, met with failure. Upon his return to
England, the few who had survived held a banquet to salute Mallory and those
who had perished. As he stood up to speak he looked around and saw picture
frames of himself and those who had died. Then he turned his back on the crowd
and faced a large picture of Mount Everest looming large like an unbeatable
giant. With tears streaming down his face, he spoke to the mountain on behalf
of his dead friends. “I speak to you Mt. Everest, in the name of all brave men
living, and those yet unborn. Mt. Everest, you defeated us once, you defeated
us twice; you defeated us three times. But Mt. Everest, we shall someday defeat
you because you can’t get any bigger and we can.”John Rose in ‘John’s Sunday
Homilies’
Today’s gospel is called the gospel of fire because of the inevitable
confrontation it speaks of as part of living the Christian life. Jesus bluntly
states the meaning and purpose of his life when he says, “I have come to bring
fire to the earth, and how I wish it were blazing already.” Once touched by
Jesus our lives are never the same. He ignites us to live fully; He pushes us
into the centre of life so that we are forced to take a stand for or against
him. “Do you suppose that I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you,
but rather division.” These words of Jesus disturb us. In today’s gospel Jesus
talks about his mission by using the metaphor of lighting a fire, and he refers
to his passion by using the image of a baptism to be received. Both fire and
water are ambivalent symbols. Fire can be awesome and it was seen by the
Israelites to symbolize the presence of God. It was also terrifying in its
power and symbolized its ability to cleanse, divide, destroy and purify, as the
Jews experienced during their Exodus. Jesus also says he has a baptism to
receive, which brings to mind another ambivalent symbol of God’s activity
–water. This water brings life, refreshment, cleansing and healing but also
destruction and death. Today’s gospel puts Jesus and what he stood for in sharp
perspective. No one who accepts Jesus can be the same. His message would bring
a sword, even to people who were closely related to each other.
Fiddler on the RoofAn example of the opposition that faith brings about in a
family occurs in the play Fiddler on the Roof. The plot centres around a man
named Tevye, the father of a poor Jewish family. He has five daughters but no
son. His eldest daughter marries a tailor who was not chosen for her by the
traditional matchmaker. After a struggle with his conscience Tevye accepts the
marriage. His next daughter marries a college student who has broken with many
Jewish traditions. After a struggle with his conscience, Tevye accepts this
marriage too. Finally, his third daughter, Chava, marries a non-Jew, a young
Russian soldier. When Golde, his wife breaks the news to him, Tevye sings a
song. In it he pours out his heart to God. At that moment Chava appears and
pleads with Tevye to accept her and her husband. Tevye looks up to heaven and
says: “How can I accept them? Can I deny everything I believe in? On the other
hand, can I deny my own child?” (But if I deny everything I believe in…) if I
try to bend that far, I will break... No Chava.” – When Jesus invited people to
follow him, he realized what he was asking. For them it meant leaving father
and mother and family for God.Mark Link in ‘Sunday Homilies’

Re: [Goanet] Remembering Neville

2016-08-09 Thread Eugene Correia
This is no excuse, but I knew that Neville was NOT the only Indian to score
hat-trick in the Olympics. Anyway, gave a chance to JC to find the
"mistake" but I wish he had done further research and provided the names of
those who have achieved this honour.

As for the feni, it was nice to drown one's seasickness with pegs of the
hot stuff. I normally gets sick on the sea, and the feni helped me to fall
asleep. When I said "lots" it meant just few pegs between Neville and me.
And let me add for JC's sake, it was NOT "fokot" soro. If I remember well,
I paid for the the half-bottle.
On board the streamer was another footballer and an ex-junior India
goalkeeper and a good friend, Irineu Vaz. However, he's was a teetotaller,
which he has remained till today.
One of the other memories of this 1975 football nationals in Goa was that
Neville and myself were present at the semi-final penalty tie-breaker in
Vasco. We both, as the small crowd, were shocked when Bernard D'Souza
ballooned the ball fromt he spot and conceded the advantage to Bengal who
went on to win the semi-final.
The penalty shootout was held in the morning of the next day after the
drawn match, as the dusk had set in on the stadium and it was ruled the
light was too light to have the tie-breaker. The match, which was played at
Margao, had been a drawn at the full-time.
Myself and Irineu wondered why the Goa coach or officials hadn't consulted
Neville on taking penalty-shots, as Neville was a specialist in shooting
from the spot. Neville's father, namesake of our friend in the Bahamas, was
a friend of BM Parkhot, the then president of the Goan football association.
After the match, Neville was disillusioned as was the Goa team and the
camp. Neville was of the opinion that Bernard should have attempted a low
shot instead of hitting the ball hard and trying to hit the roof of the
net. After his miss, Bernard went almost to the centre of the field and had
his face on the ground. I don't remember the score Bengal won. I leave that
for our dear JC to have find it out. Perhaps he can score another "penalty"
against me.
Come in JC, the ball is in your court. Or, rather the ball is placed at the
penalty shot for you to shooot.

[Goanet] Mayem, Bicholim, Sanquelim blocks demand action against Jr Rane

2016-08-09 Thread samir umarye

PANJIM: Condemning the “ irresponsible” statements made by Valpoi MLA Vishwajit
Rane, the Congress block committees of Bicholim, Sanquelim and Mayem have
demanded strict disciplinary action against him.

The Valpoi MLA in a meeting held at Mayem declared that he would have a final
say in selecting candidates in the five constituencies of Poriem, Valpoi,
Bicholim, Mayem and Sanquelim.

The three block presidents have complained to GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro
in this regard and demanded action.

“ Why does Vishwajit wake up just before elections every time? Four years ago
he did the same and the result was there for everyone to see,” said Rajnikant
Lawanis, a PCC member.

He further said that whatever Vishwajit is doing is illegal. “ He is the member
of co- ordination committee but that does not mean he overrules everyone,” he
said.

Prashant Chanekar, president of the Bicholim block, said the block committees
have nothing to do with Vishwajit’s statements. “ It was a individual meeting
called by Vishwajit and the party or block committees have nothing to do with
it,” he said adding “ the block committees are doing a tremendous job after the
defeat last time and it won’t be right to bring an outsider at the last minute
and make him the candidate.” Mayem block president Anand Naik said that the
names of the candidates will have to be forwarded by the block committees and
not anybody else. “ The names of the probable candidates are being submitted by
the blocks to GPCC which in turn will send it to AICC. Who is Vishwajit to
declare the names?” he asked.

Digambar Naik of Sanquelim block stated that whoever intends to fight elections
should approach the block which will forward the names. “ Vishwajit is
misguiding people by such stray statements and creating a divide within the
party,” Naik said.
