Cecil, Could you tell us which parts of Roland's arguments you disagree
with any why?

QUOTE

Ad hominem (Latin for "to the man" or "to the person"[1]), short for
argumentum ad hominem, is a logical fallacy in which an argument is
rebutted by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the
person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather
than attacking the substance of the argument itself.[2]

Ad hominem reasoning is not always fallacious, for example, when it relates
to the credibility of statements of fact or when used in certain kinds of
moral and practical reasoning.[3]

Fallacious ad hominem reasoning is normally categorized as an informal
fallacy,[4][5][6] more precisely as a genetic fallacy, a subcategory of
fallacies of irrelevance.

public will assemble there from 4.30 - 5 pm for cake and coffee and entry
is open to all but it would be nice if you phone Leonard Fernandes (98503

The book promises to be a visual delight as her graphic designer Nisha
Albuquerque indicates in her website:
http://nishaalbuquerque.com/baker-butcher-doctor-diplomat-book/

I will be in conversation with the redoubtable Selma on the occasion. By
and large what I intend to do is to prod her with questions regarding
whether the Goan migration to Africa was an exploitative colonial
misadventure or a collaborative endeavor which led to a much worthy of
praise

I also think that there is a large gap in the narrative for it does not
cover the role of the working class Goan. If so why is this so? And yes, my
favorite hobby horse regarding the role of caste and class in East Africa
will not be missing.

Selma will be taking questions after our chat so it will be a dialogue. But
what if you can't because you live in England or South Africa or,Jabbalpore
or wherever?* Well then do yourself and myself a favor: tell me what I
should ask Selma about on this forum. *I'll relay the question to her BTW
Selma doesn't have Internet access in Goa so maybe we can discuss the
matter here as well.

Looking forward to your responses,

Marathi leaps forward

The MGP tried its best to merge Goa with Maharashtra, but did not succeed
.The original stalwarts, founders abandoned the party and joined National
party. They had their moments of glory and disappointments and are almost
non entity. Then the language issue gave them a face saver of sorts that
Marathi shall be also used as associate language. It was kept in cold
storage thus far. THEIR LOVE FOR Marathi did not dampen or disappoint their
spirits. Hence they stirred up the issue of MOI., Some misguided Catholics
misunderstood their s strategy and hoped that extending support to the
regional language, Marathi protagonist would promote schools and Konkanni
language and culture They are sadly mistaken, living in fools paradise of
make believe attitude. BJP to avoid label of liars and double speak in
taking a decision as per cabinet decision and assurance to fasting MOI
representatives, preferred to delay the healing wounds and vertical divide.
The Supporters of MOI kept the heat on with MGP creating confusion to stay
in reckoning and relevant, The BJP in catch 22 situation, caught on the
horns of dilemma planned to mollify them by granting Rs 400/per student
grant enrolled in Konkanni and Marathi schools The earlier sop of huge
grants had no takers and hence stands withdrawn. The Marathi primary
schools are closing with regular frequency due to lack of strength.
Therefore a new plan was hatched to teach BJP a lesson with bait of
elections near at hand, but everybody knows that this threat is a paper
tiger , as CM asserted that grants would be continued to the minority
schools . Now another diabolic plan is afloat in moving a private members
bill to give Marathi status of official language on the same plan as
Konkanni.Though Konkanni is an official language, its use in administration
has made no headway. The C, M . could not be seen dithering or be labeled
as stumbling block to the cause of Marathi to send an open message that
could be interpreted to his disadvantage. Fortunately there is an amendment
that may serve to provide scope for fermenting trouble. This is a clear
divide to enter through back door. Another war is brewing up and fight to
finish between Marathi and Konkanni supporters will lead to bitter
controversies and boiling blood. The argument about number of Marathi papers
and circulation number of readers is not convincing argument in favour of
Marathi language as official language without comparison with English
dailies and subscriber figures, besides other weeklies, magazines etc .It
is a fact that there is a floating and settled Marathi speaking
population, which should be excluded. Those that supported BJP to utter in
a change must now rue the roost and be warned about their sinister moves to
save their skin, not the interest of Goa and Goans

[Goanet] Tiatr's Bombay Days (Dr. Kyoko Matsukawa, Sahapedia.org)

2016-08-13 Thread Goanet Reader
Tiatr's Bombay Days

Dr. Kyoko Matsukawa

Dr. Kyoko Matsukawa is Associate Professor of Cultural
Anthropology at the Department of Sociology, Konan
University, Kobe, Japan.

http://www.sahapedia.org/tiatrs-bombay-days

My association with Goa started in 1997. I finished my MA in
Cultural Anthropology in Japan (my thesis was on the status
of Christianity in India in the past and present). I had to
decide on another topic for further fieldwork and research --
a kind of rite of passage in the discipline. I had already
made up my mind to go to India as I wanted to see how
Christianity was being practiced there today.

A professor from Kyoto University suggested that
Goa might be an interesting place for me. So I
visited Goa briefly and fell in love with the place
and its people. Eventually, I ended up spending 18
months in Goa between April 2000 and September 2001.

My fieldwork was mainly on the multilingual situation of Goan
society. In my Ph.D. thesis I examined the connection between
the social and cultural structure of Goa and the use of
languages among people: Konkani, Marathi, Portuguese and
English. I focused on the late 1980s during which the Konkani
movement had intensified.

In the course of my research, I realized that I was in fact
examining the transformation of Goan society from a
Portuguese colony to a part of independent India. The plight
of Konkani today reflects the socio-cultural issues of Goan
society.1

In recent years, my research interest shifted towards how
Konkani ties people together inside and outside Goa. It
appeared to me that I could get further insight into this by
looking at the past and present of Konkani theatre, tiatr.

My First Encounter with Tiatr
-

It was a few days before the feast of Our Lady of Merces
Church in November 2000. I had moved into an apartment of a
Christian couple as a paying guest in July. We were relaxing
in the living room in the evening when someone knocked at the
door and the vicar of the church came in. He requested uncle
and aunty (as I would refer to the Christian couple) to
purchase some tickets for a 'drama'.

They bought three tickets. On the evening of the feast we
went to the church compound where a makeshift stage was set
up. My ticket had 'NON-STOP-TIATR' written on it. The title
of the drama was Nixannim. Although I could not follow the
comic parts too well, I understood the main storyline.

A young woman was pregnant but her lover left her and married
another woman. She felt desperate and after giving birth to a
baby boy, left for the Gulf leaving her child in the care of
her neighbour. The boy was sold to a family and grew up into
a fine young man without knowing his true mother. The story
revolved around the son's encounter with his mother when she
returned from the Gulf.

The performance was well received by the audience. They
clapped and whistled at the comedians who satirized Goan
politicians (in that evening's performance, the then-recently
resigned Chief Minister of Goa, Francisco Sardinha was
bitterly criticized).

This encounter with tiatr left a deep impression on me. I
realised that I could learn a lot about Goa from tiatrs!

After that I started to watch tiatr performances in
earnest. I imagine it must have been strange for
people to see a Japanese woman attending theatre
halls like Kala Academy in Panaji and Gomant Vidya
Niketan in Margao alone and laughing at comedies in
  Konkani!

>From Goa to Bombay While gaining more knowledge about tiatr
my desire to go to Bombay grew. It is well-known that the
first tiatr, Italian Bhurgo, was staged by Lucasinho Ribeiro
on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1892, in the city. What intrigued
me was the socio-historical background of the birth of this
unique drama form.

The nineteenth-century witnessed the growth of business in
the city. The first cotton-textile mills were established in
the 1850s. The start of the American Civil War in 1861 was a
boon for Bombay. America's supply of cotton to Europe was
halted and the Lancashire textile industry became dependent
on Indian cotton, which was exported through Bombay.

The prosperity of the city attracted a workforce from the
Konkan region and other parts of Maharashtra as well as
traders from Gujarat (Prakash 2010). Bombay became a vibrant
place open to new styles and technologies, not just
economically but culturally as well. Parsi theatre was one of
the products of this era. It found patronage in prominent
merchants such as Jagannath Shankarset and Jamsetjee
Jeejeebhoy. The former donated a building site for the Grant
Road Theatre, which soon became the centre of Indian
theatrical performances. The Parsi theatre introduced a
proscenium arch, massive painted curtains and gaslights.

As Kathryn Hansen says, "Theatricality had suddenly reached a
new level" (2002: 40-41). At the same time Bombay became the

I am seeing a lot more in common with these two politicians than meets the
eye.

Do you think Parrikar would come to the eye of Modi and become the Defence
Minister of the country from being the CM of a tiny state if he:

Did not talk of Zero Corruption no matter what his 'live and let live'
intention.

Did not make a bosom friend out of Goa's Catholic patriarch.

Did not buy out the administration's top prosecutor.

Did not be an obedient pracharak of the RSS and a Yes Man of the BJP's
brass.

Did not promise to remove all casinos from Goa while letting them provide
him with hush money.

Similarly do you think Trump would have led the pack of 17 Republican
wannabe Presidents going on to win the GOP race if he did not:

Villify the Muslims, America's favourite whipping boys.

Promise to win all future wars.

Promise to bring lost jobs home again.

Promise to repeal existing trade treaties because they were not favourable
to the country.

Build a wall with Mexico and make them pay for it.

Promise to make America great again.

Did you see how Parrikar is as quiet as a chicken except for his inane
statements on unimportant subjects using atrocious pronunciation.

If Trump becomes President, watch him doing the Parrikar and Mervyn Lobo
relocating to the USA (as promised).

[Goanet] McDonald's pressured to serve up global antibiotics ban

McDonald's pressured to serve up global antibiotics ban - BBC
News
www.bbc.com
A new online campaign is putting pressure on fast food giant McDonald's to
impose a global ban on products from animals treated with antibiotics.

A new online campaign is putting pressure on fast food giant McDonald's to
impose a global ban on products from animals treated with antibiotics.

Scientists warn that treating livestock with antibiotics is leading to a rise
in drug-resistant superbugs.

The charity ShareAction has called on consumers to
email McDonald's chief
executive
Steve Easterbrook.

Last week, the fast food chain stopped using poultry treated with antibiotics -
but only in its US restaurants.

ShareAction has called on McDonald's - which operates in more than 100
countries - to stop using chicken, beef, pork and dairy products that have been
given antibiotics in all of its 30,000 stores globally.

'Superbugs'

Medical experts warn that the routine use of antibiotics to promote growth and
prevent - rather than treat - illness in farm animals contributes to the rise
of drug-resistant "superbug" infections. They are said to kill at least 23,000
Americans a year and represent a significant threat to global public health.

Scientists have warned the world is on the cusp of the "post-antibiotic
era" after discovering in China in
November 2015 bacteria resistant to the antibiotic colistin - the medication
used when all others have failed.

It appeared to develop in farm animals before also being detected in hospital
patients.

[Chicken farm]Image copyrightAFPImage captionAntibiotics are widely used to
prevent rather than treat illnesses

Fast food restaurants have become a focal point for change in the food industry
by forcing suppliers to change their practices.

According to ShareAction, more than 70% of all antibiotics used in the US are
given to livestock.

'Supersize their ambition'

In the UK, that figure stands at more than 50% according to the group.

"We hope this action will encourage McDonald's to supersize their ambition,"
said ShareAction chief executive Catherine Howarth.

McDonald's told the Reuters news agency that it was too early to set a timeline
for phasing out the use of all meat and milk products from animals treated with
antibiotics.

The company cited varying practices and regulations around the world as one of
the difficulties, but added that it "continues to regularly review this issue".

[McDonald's sign]Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES

Rival fast food groups are also under pressure to take action.

On Thursday KFC was the target of a petition from consumer
groups that called on the chicken
chain to stop using poultry products treated with antibiotics.

KFC has already said it will limit the use of human antibiotics in its chicken
by next year.

However, critics claim the policy still allows for routine use of antibiotics
by its chicken suppliers.

US burger chain Wendy's plans to stop using chickens raised with antibiotics by
2017 and also plans to set similar goals for pork and beef.

Antibiotics - what you need to know

  * Some infections are becoming almost impossible to treat because of the
excessive use of antibiotics.
  * More than half of the antibiotics used around the world are used in
animals, often to make them grow more quickly.
  * Scientists warned the world was on the cusp of the "post-antibiotic
era" after discovering in China in
November 2015 bacteria resistant to the antibiotic colistin - the medication
used when all others have failed.
  * It appeared to develop in farm animals before also being detected in
hospital patients.
  * In some cases, antibiotics are used in agriculture to treat infections -
but most are used prophylactically in healthy animals to prevent infection or,
controversially, as a way of boosting weight gain.
  * Using antibiotics as growth promoters was banned in the EU in 2006.
  * Such uses are more common in intensive farming conditions.
  * Antibiotics are most useful in cramped dirty conditions where infections
are easier to spread, so more spacious and hygienic living conditions are one
way to reduce the need for antibiotics.
  * There are also calls for
greater investment in research for vaccines and for tests that can diagnose
specific infections and a call for countries to agree on a

[Goanet] DECKS HAVE CLEARED TO RECOVER THOSE 20 LAKHS FROM ANIL HOBLE AND TO DEMOLISH HIS ILLEGAL STRUCTURES

2016-08-13 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan has been urged to ensure that the
authorities promptly proceed with the proceedings to recover from State BJP
Vice President Anil Hoble the fine of twenty lakhs that was imposed on him
by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The attention of the Collector has been drawn that the six week stay
granted by the Bombay High Court at Goa on June 29th 2016 while disposing
the last petition filed by Anil Hoble had ended. The Collector has been
requested to this time herself monitor the recovery proceedings as in
the past her officers had malafiedly connived with the politically well
connected Anil Hoble to subvert and delay the due process of law.

The NGT on May 29th last year while ordering the demolition of Anil Hoble’s
illegal structures including the Hoble’s River Lounge the Bar & Restaurant
along the Ribandar-Panaji causeway for violating various provisions of the
environmental law had directed him to pay a fine of 20 lakhs within six
weeks for destroying mangroves and doing illegal land filling in violation
of law. The proceedings initiated by the Tiswadi Mamlatdar to recover the
twenty lakhs was however kept on hold on account of the stay order
issued by the High Court. The decks have now cleared for the Deputy
Collector to also demolish the remaining illegal structures including Anil
Hoble’s Bar and Restaurant which was inaugurated by then Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar on 1st April 2014.

Merv/Roland:
I did not want to budge   into your fracas.  But as far as the U.S. Dollar is
concerned,I will not be surprised if it collapses in a few months.  It has
become a house of cardswhich is un-sustainable.  Gold may be a good alternative
if one wants to protect one's assets.  Mark my word.

Roland,
You have the rare capacity of making me feel like Yesu Kristo. This time I
feel like I am in front of Pilate and the reply "You have said so" seems
the appropriate answer :-) But let me throw in a sweetener. How about
joining me at the Canadian Embassy on Pennsylvania Avenue on inauguration
day? We could stand on the balcony and watch Trump march up to the White
House. Hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be compliments of Her Majesty, the
Queen.

"Hilary's arrest and the nomination of somebody called George Bush 43 years
old to the Supreme Court". Who would emigrate to a country in chaos? I know
who. Someone who can make money out of it all. Like the money he made on
his previous prediction that the US financial system would collapse because
they were printing money at will and Gold was where everyone should be >

I guess you do not realize that there are two people in the USA named
George Bush. One is called George Bush (41) and the other, believe it or
not, is George Bush (43). George Bush (43) would make an interesting
Supreme Court judge even though he is not 43 years old.

Again, "You have said so" is the appropriate answer.

Mervyn
BTW, Trump insisted today that Obama and Hilary were the co-founders of
ISIS. I now expect President Trump to arrest both of them in February,
2017. I like to be in town the day before the circus arrives. I would
encourage you to be a real tiger and arrive early too. Keep in mind that
there is the real possibility of Trump anointing himself Emperor shortly
after.

TRUMP ECONOMIC PLAN CALLS FOR EVERY AMERICAN TO INHERIT MILLIONS FROM FATHER

By Andy Borowitz, AUGUST 8, 2016

DETROIT (The Borowitz Report)—At a speech in Detroit on Monday, the
Republican Presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump, spelled out the details
of his economic plan, which calls for every American to inherit millions of
dollars from his or her father.

“There are people at my rallies, desperate people, desperate because they
want jobs,” he told his luncheon audience at the Detroit Economic Club.
“Once they inherit millions from their father, they will never want a job
again.”

Using an anecdote to show how his economic plan would work, Trump
explained, “A man with zero dollars who inherited forty million dollars
from his father would become forty million dollars wealthier.”

“We are going to make America rich again,” he said.

Tearing into “the failed economic policies of the Obama Administration,” he
argued that children in China are inheriting money from their fathers at a
much higher rate than American children are.

“We don’t win at anything anymore,” he said. “We don’t win at inheriting.”

Trump’s plan for wealth creation drew strong praise from his team of
economic advisers, including Ivanka, Eric, Tiffany, Barron, and Donald
Trump, Jr.

Thanks, people like Joe used to be the norm with Goans. Now they are the
