there, and willingly share photos of the same too.

As it happened, Alan and Zina had only months back visited the (real life)
Mapusa market with me. Sometimes, when in a good mood, I humour visiting
friends with a walking tour around some part of Goa which I'm familiar
with, and which simultaneously interests them. Mapusa Market is a
favourite, a place with many sights, smells, sweets, spices and special
bargains!

A+Z claimed they would have won many of the prizes hands down (daughter
Alpa was there with them too, but she didn't encounter Mapusa with us).
Unfortunately, by the time they reached, the offer on the quizzes was long
over. Sad.

Alan incidentally is an engineer-turned-history buff, who specialises on
the history of the Mangalorean Christians and authored *Sarasvati's
Children*, *Shades Within Shadows*, and *Slaves of the Sultans*. The middle
one is a novel, the other two are non-fiction works in history. In both he
touches on the little-known and much-misunderstood 'captivity' of the
Mangalorean Christians by Tipu Sultan.

Incidentally, while the rivalry now between these two Christian communities
(specially in migration destinations like Mumbai) might not give you a hint
of this, the Mangalorean Christians are actually very largely of Goan
origin. Alan has often told me: "Rico, you talk about the Goan diaspora so
often, but you tend to forget one of your earliest and largest diasporas."

Meaning, the Mangaloreans.

His Australia-educated daughter Alpa designed the cover of this book, which
has done well in the market despite very little direct publicity.

Alan's next work, again focussing on the intriguing and confusing world of
Indian history, is expected to be more ambitiousm, and take on a wider
canvas and a far bigger geography.

Just by way of interest, below are some of the photos Alan shared with me
on the Mapusa market (the exhibition at Kochi that is, not the place 6.3
kms away from my home). FN

Thanks. Rico. Wanted to shared with all associated with Mapuca which has a
special place in our family history. Apart from hailing from Aldona in the
17th century, my Grandfather had a cloth shop selling the sarees he
manufactured in Mangalore circa 1930. It was located in largo da camara.
Incidentally, the daughter in the photo is Zara, not Alpa.

Re: [Goanet] An interesting take on the prevalent "long-term tourist's" depiction of Goa

2017-03-05 Thread Eugene Correia
I see thar non-Goans who are in the privileged positions as editors comment on
Goenkarponn. Having lived in Goa for say, 13 by years, they consider themselves
qualified to write on the subject. One claimed to have imbibed the. Carnival
spirit and maybe other cultural things. In Konkani, these people are called
"addeche Goenkar." I was born and brought up in Bombay but never it occurred it
me I was indeed a "Marathi manus."
Appropriating another's culture is good but, in Goa, many say so to be accepted
as "Goans". Residential qualifications apart, these outsiders are skimming the
largesse of Gia and its society. I doubt they have any concern for the Goan
culture in their hearts. For me. They are make-believe Goans.
I have seen many Indians who can't be said to be Canadians. To me they appear
Induans to the core. No wonder, Leitch. One of the 14 running to be the
Conservative leader, wants immigrants who have "Canadian core values. " One is
it sure what these values are.

[Goanet] WOMEN STRIKE by Fr. Cedric Prakash sj (5March2017)

2017-03-05 Thread Robin Viegas
From: b sabha

From: Fr. Cedric Prakash sj
>

Women Strike!

   -Fr Cedric Prakash sj*

March 8th dawns every year! As the world observes International Women’s Day
(IWD), there will be the usual round of cosmetic programmes, with speaker after
speaker using the politically correct words and with the typically patronising
attitude towards women. The sad and cruel reality is that precious little seems
to change. In India and in several other parts of the world, most women
continue to be condemned to live as second-class citizens in patriarchal and
male-dominated societies.

Gurmehar Kaur, a 20-year old peace activist and student of the Delhi
University, has over the last few weeks, emerged as an icon. She has
courageously and brazenly taken on the fascist forces that are doing their best
to destroy the fabric of India. The message she wants to convey is simple: she
wants peace in the sub-continent. Her father who was in the Indian Army was
killed in the Kargil war, when she was just two years old. However, several men
in India (including some so-called ‘celebrities’) are still unable to respect
Gurmehar’s audacity and forthrightness. They have been trolling her, spewing
hate and threatening her with violence and rape. In doing so, the men prove a
point that they are still unable to accept the Gurmehars of our world!

Gurmehar’s courage, finds resonance with the theme for this year’s IWD Campaign
#BeBoldForChange that
challenges one for “ground-breaking action that truly drives the greatest
change for women. Each one of us - with women, men and non-binary people
joining forces - can be a leader within our own spheres of influence by taking
bold pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. Through purposeful
collaboration, we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential
offered to economies the world over”.

Very significantly, on March 8th, in the US and across the globe, women
(supported by their allies) will find common cause and will act together for
equity, justice and human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people
through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity. The plan is to remove
themselves from the economy to protest societal barriers that keep all women
from achieving true equality. Though two events are being held—A Day Without a
Woman(#DayWithoutAWoman), organized by the ‘Women's
March’,
and the International Women's Strike(#IStrikeFor), a grassroots endeavour
founded by a team of activists, feminists, and scholars—organizers are working
together in solidarity to create a united message that represents women from
all walks of life. They want to combat decades-long socioeconomic inequality by
calling for marginalized communities—working women, women of colour, Native
women, immigrant women, Muslim and other minority women, disabled women, and
lesbian, queer, and trans women—to come together and make their voices heard.

The ‘Women’s Strike’ is intended to become the most impacting global movement.
This is not an impossibility given the fact that women organised the ‘Women’s
March’ on January 21st, which brought out millions of women not only in
Washington, but across the United States and in several Capitals across the
globe – to protest against the anti-women rhetoric of the newly- elected US
President. On March 8th this year, all (particularly those women who cannot go
on ‘strike’ for obvious reasons!) are encouraged to wear red, which is the
colour of love, revolution energy and sacrifice- as a sign of solidarity.

Since 2013, February 14th also has a newer meaning with the ‘One Billion
Campaign’, which has been fighting against the sexual and physical violence
against women... This year, the One Billion Rising Revolution gave sharper
focus and visibility to the exploitation of women and has tried to harness even
stronger global solidarity to demand an end to violence in all forms. ‘Rise!
Disrupt! Connect!’ are the catchwords today for this significant campaign. The
‘Nirbhaya’ reality in India was not a once-and-for-all. It is a painful reality
to which the average Indian woman is subjected to – in the private precincts of
one’s home, at the work place and even in open, public places. Women, in
general, continue to be demeaned and even dehumanised.

A few days ago in New Delhi at a programme REMEMBERANCE – highlighting the
fifteenth anniversary of the Gujarat Carnage there were several extraordinary
women present. There was Zakia Jafri and Nishrin Jafri, the wife and the
daughter of Eshan Jafri who was brutally murdered during that carnage. Teesta
Setalvad, Shabnam Hashmi and others who have relentlessly championed the cause
of the

an injury-time equaliser from Shane McFaul to thank.

Though it was Chennai City who took the lead through Amiri’s header (42′),
Chennai City’s profligacy in front of the goal would come back to bite them

[Goa Research Net] Goa Carnival 2017 - Floats parade - Pics and Video

Really enjoyed the pictures of the floats and shows of various Carnival events
in Goa.
Thanks Joe.  They were good angel shots with nice color.
My only comment on looking at the pictures is:  The Goans (both performers and
spectators) need to smile and enjoy the event.  Smiling spectators and an
enthusiastic applause is an added boost to the performers.

A smile also reflects the inner happiness and is a great stress reliever. The
capital of the world with the most smiling folks is Bangkok, Thailand.

[Goanet] AN AUDIT ON BJP’S FIVE YEAR RULE IN GOA

2017-03-05 Thread Aires Rodrigues
This week the BJP will complete five years of its rule in Goa. The
government has to be assessed on the ‘Goa Vision Document 2012-2017’, that
was released by the Party in the run-up to the March 2012 Assembly
elections and its blatant acts of gross misdeeds.

It has been an unending string of U Turns and reneged promises. Despite
having been given a clear mandate, the BJP failed to deliver on the ‘
*Parivartan*’ that it had promised by way of Good governance and Zero
tolerance to corruption. It has been rampant corruption and scams galore.
We have witnessed total nepotism and sheer display of arrogance.

The BJP had promised the moon by way of a Golden Goa and Acche din but
has reneged on almost every promise while violating every possible law. On
March 9th 2012 Manohar Parrikar took over as Chief Minister by
unnecessarily burdening the State exchequer with those Rs.11 lakhs
squandered on that pompous swearing-in ceremony on SAG grounds at Campal
instead of having that customary function at Raj Bhavan.

On 8th November 2014 Manohar Parrikar moved on to Delhi to be Defence
Minister while officially passing on the baton to Laxmikant Parsekar but
remained Goa’s de-facto Chief Minister while Goans continued bearing the
brunt of a government enveloped in confusion, contradictions and
controversies.

In its ‘Vision Document’ the BJP vowed that Annual Performance Reports of
every government department would be prepared and publicized. This did not
happen. Also promised was participatory governance at village level as
envisaged in the 73rd and 74th amendments, which too, did not see the light
of the day. Promised was a new Agricultural policy to make agriculture more
rewarding but all that we have witnessed is the continued sight of fields
and hills being converted into concrete jungles. We were assured a new
regional plan keeping in mind Goa’s identity, but was no plausible progress
in that direction while a selected coterie of builders having a field day
with constructions mushrooming everywhere without the much needed provision
for basic infrastructure of electricity, water, parking, sewage and garbage
disposal.

To ensure regular, uninterrupted power supply the BJP had promised that the
whole of Goa would have underground cabling in five years and that the
State would be plastic-free in three years which has also not happened. The
promise that a garbage management system would be in place in 18 months is
still a distant dream. The government has miserably failed in its promise
of 12 hours-a-day uninterrupted drinking water within two years. Also not
appointed is the promised Minority Commission. Contrary to the 2012
assurance, the six-lane Zuari Bridge was not a priority but instead the
third bridge over the Mandovi was tendered first so that the party could
pocket a huge kickback. Let the government enlighten us as to how many
Non-Resident Goans (NRGs) it has encouraged and in what manner, for Goa’s
development, as promised in that Vision document. The BJP has only played
to the gallery on the issue of Special Status but has done nothing to
control the alarming and unacceptable levels of migration into Goa.

We were assured that in three months garbage strewn along the roads would
be cleared. Apart from a mere cosmetic exercise on some roads, the garbage
situation statewide has instead turned critical with even the beach
cleaning contract being a multi-crore scam. The BJP has not had the spine
to even deliver on its promise of banning plastic bags.

Escalating level of crime is a matter of grave concern while political
interference in police functioning is turning Goa into a lawless State. The
promise to get rid of the Casinos from the River Mandovi was another cruel
joke. The BJP had promised that Professionals and not Politicians would
head Corporations and other bodies but to our utter dismay, all the
Corporations were loaded with political cronies including many who were
defeated at the 2012 Assembly elections.

The various schemes launched to pay doles and build vote banks were in bad
taste. Welfare measures cannot be treated as gifts of the ruling party but
have to meet the needs of the deserving. Even on the Medium of Instruction
(MOI) issue there has been an oscillating volte face. While in the
Opposition, the BJP had always vociferously criticized the wasteful
expenditure of Ministers and MLAs on unnecessary travel, but the current
Ministers and MLAs have jetted around while draining an already depleted
exchequer. With so much hype on e-governance, Goa’s bureaucracy is bloating
by the day. Despite the current financial crisis, the BJP has hired
thousands more to accommodate party cadres with merit not being the
criteria.

In his first budget speech in 2012, the then Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar had assured that every Department would implement e-governance
within 18 months. But sadly, most government websites continue
dysfunctional or remain not updated. The ‘*aam aadmi*’ is

I genuinely think that you have underestimated Roland Francis in the same
way that some US voters underestimated dj Trump.

However, I will agree with you that Roland is among the most innovative
Indians I have meet.

He maybe confused - but he sure is innovative. When I say he may be
confused, it is because he claims that there are tigers in Canada. Everyone
else knows that the tigers are in Goa and that there are none in Canada.
This innovation has let Roland Francis create a 'name' for himself.

Everyone is entitled to her own opinion and I actually like those who have
different views from mine. The problem is that people are not entitled to
their own facts. And the fact in contention here is that the Portuguese did
not 'withdraw' from Goa. They were given many opportunities to do so but
they chose the dumbest one. India then marched in and kicked them out.
People from all parts of India are now marching in and that is their right.
70 years ago Goans were marching into Mumbai and there was no objection to
it.

My concern right now is if I decide to relocate from Toronto to my
ancestral house in Goa, I may not be able to afford it. My bigger concern
is that the locals there, today, cannot afford to live in their own land.

As for claiming who is or is not a Goan, the answer lies in the legal
books. If it takes 3.5 years to legally be a Canadian or a Goan so be it.
Thanks to P. Trudeau, I was Canadian before I arrived here. On the other
hand, I know Irish immigrants who have been in Canada 40 years, who are
thorough Canadians, but have not become citizens as they absolutely refuse
to swear allegiance to the Queen.

Similarly, one can claim to have become 'Goan' without meeting any of the
requirements others impose - in order to be 'accepted.'

Mahadev Paryekar, a former Chopdar (Peon) at the Bombay High Court at Goa
was this morning found hanging at his house located at Dodkewada, Velus in
Sattari.

The very soft spoken and extremely humble 62 year old Mahadev Paryekar had
retired on 31st August last year after a one year extension and was
struggling over the last many months to get his pension papers cleared.

A very sorry state of affairs, when a government employee should as a
matter of right start receiving pension immediately after retirement. When
will the authorities awaken to the reality that in delaying the clearing of
pension papers they cannot leave the retired person in financial distress.

May Mahadev Bab’s Soul rest in eternal peace.
