2017-03-14 Thread Fidibus

Kanth: A 400-Year Program of Modernist Thinking is Exploding

by Lynn Parramore; New Economic Thinking

Eurocentric modernism has unhinged us from our human nature, argues
Rajani Kanth in his new book

Across the globe, a collective freak-out spanning the whole political
system is picking up steam with every new “surprise” election, rush of
tormented souls across borders, and tweet from the star of America’s
great unreality show, Donald Trump.

But what exactly is the force that seems to be pushing us towards
Armageddon? Is it capitalism gone wild? Globalization? Political
corruption? Techno-nightmares?

Rajani Kanth, a political economist, social thinker, and poet, goes
beyond any of these explanations for the answer. In his view, what’s
throwing most of us off kilter — whether we think of ourselves as on the
left or right, capitalist or socialist —was birthed 400 years ago during
the period of the Enlightenment. It’s a set of assumptions, a particular
way of looking at the world that pushed out previous modes of existence,
many quite ancient and time-tested, and eventually rose to dominate the
world in its Anglo-American form.

We’re taught to think of the Enlightenment as the blessed end to the
Dark Ages, a splendid blossoming of human reason. But what if instead of
bringing us to a better world, some of this period’s key ideas ended up
producing something even darker?

Kanth argues that this framework, which he calls Eurocentric modernism,
is collapsing, and unless we understand why and how it has distorted our
reality, we might just end up burnt to a crisp as this misanthropic
Death Star starts to bulge and blaze in its dying throes.

A mass incarceration of humanity

Kanth’s latest book, Farewell to Modernism: On Human Devolution in the
Twenty-First Century, tells the history of a set of bad ideas. He first
caught the scent that something was off as an economics student in
India, wondering why, despite his mastery of the mathematics and
technology of the discipline, the logic always escaped him. Then one day
he had an epiphany: the whole thing was “cockeyed from start to finish.”
To his amazement, his best teachers agreed. “Then why are we studying
economics?” demanded the pupil. “To protect ourselves from the lies of
economists,” replied the great economist Joan Robinson.

Kanth realized that people are not at all like Adam Smith’s homo
economicus, a narrowly self-interested agent trucking and bartering
through life. Smith had turned the human race — a species capable of
wondrous caring, creativity, and conviviality — into a nasty horde of
instinctive materialists: a society of hustlers.

Using his training in history and cultural theory, Kanth dedicated
himself to investigating how this way of thinking took hold of us, and
how it delivered a society which is essentially asocial — one in which
everybody sees everybody else as a means to their own private ends.
Eurocentric modernism, he argues, consigned us to an endless and
exhausting Hobbesian competition. For every expansion of the market, we
found our social space shrunk and our natural environment spoiled. For
every benefit we received, there came a new way to pit us against each
other. Have the costs become too high?

The creed of capture

The Eurocentric modernist program, according to Kanth, has four planks:
a blind faith in science; a self-serving belief in progress; rampant
materialism; and a penchant for using state violence to achieve its
ends. In a nutshell, it’s a habit of placing individual self-interest
above the welfare of community and society.

To illustrate one of its signature follies, Kanth refers to that great
Hollywood ode to the Western spirit, “The Sound of Music.” Early in the
film, the Mother Superior bursts into song, calling on the nun Maria to
“climb every mountain, ford every stream.”

Sounds exhilarating, but to what end? Why exactly do we need to ford
every stream? From the Eurocentric modernist viewpoint, Kanth says, the
answer is not so innocent: we secretly do it so that we can say to
ourselves, “Look, I achieved something that’s beyond the reach of
somebody else.” Hooray for me!

“That’s our big dream,” says Kanth. “Everyone and everything is a
stepping stone to our personal glorification.” When others get in our
way, we end up with a grim take on life described succinctly by Jean
Paul Sartre: “Hell is other people.”

Sounds bad, but didn’t Eurocentric modernism also give us our great
democratic ideals of equality and liberty to elevate and protect us?

Maybe these notions are not really our salvation, suggests Kanth. He
notes that when we replace the vital ties of kinship and community with
abstract contractual relations, or when we find that the only sanctioned
paths in life are that of consumer or producer, we become alienated and
depressed in spirit. Abstract rights like liberty and equality turn out
to be rather cold comfort.

2017-03-14 Thread George Pinto
The Union of Goan Sex Workers (formerly referred to as prostitutes) has taken
great umbrage that Goan politicians have been compared to them. At a rally at
Azad Maidan, spokesperson Ms. Virgin Not Undressai reminded the public they
make an honest living, doing exactly what they promise: "we provide a trick or
two in bed with consenting adults, by comparison, Goan politicians are playing
tricks 24/7 on a non-consenting public". Another speaker at the rally noted
that the public should refrain from insulting Sex Workers by comparing
politicians to them: "our word means everything, can you name a Goan politician
who can be trusted"? The Union of Goan Sex Workers intends to fight the 2022
elections as the only honest party on the ballot, their slogan is "Tricks only
in the bedroom".

FIRST  GOAL in an election is to win.  To be second is equal to being last.
SECOND  GOAL - after winning is to RULE and MAKE A DIFFERENCE for the
electorate so that the politician will be reelected again ... and again.
The crooked politician who runs for election is not at fault - that it their
right! Those who vote for / elect the crooked politician(s) are the ones who are
accessory to the crime.
My last post outlined why it makes sense to hitch one's wagon to the BJP.
Those who think otherwise should contest the election next time round.
The ruling to the courts post-election make ample sense.

*HARD WORKING AIFF YDP TRIO NEEDS TO ‘WORK HARDER’*

* By Joseph Solomon,*

*AIFF Media Team*

*MUMBAI:* New faces are always a welcome sight for any Team. Ever since
Stephen Constantine took over as the Head Coach of the Indian National Team
February 2015, the British Coach has handed debuts to 30 Players with
varying degrees of success.

As part of the development process, it is vital for young Indian Players to
come through the National Team setup and in order for that to happen there
needs to be a systematic process.

For the Indian National Team currently gearing up for their International
Friendly against Cambodia on March 22 and AFC Asian Cup Qualifier against
Myanmar on March 28, the new faces coming through the ranks of the
development process are Milan Singh, Jerry Lalrinzuala and Nishu Kumar.

The talking point stays that the trio are all products of the AIFF Youth
Development system and their call up to the senior team after the “hard
work” is just the continuous process which makes every YDP a success. But
to take the next step, the boys need to “work harder.”

“I had waited for my chance for long and now that the Coach has selected
me, I have to play to the best of my abilities and prove that I too can
play on the International stage,” said Milan Singh in one breath.

“It is about time for me and I am raring to prove myself,” he added. “I
have never shied away from hard work and come what may I will work hard to
improve myself as a Player.”

Jerry Lalrinzuala, barely 19 stated that “it is an honour to be here as
part of the Indian ‘senior’ National Team and I thank the Coach (Stephen
Constantine) for providing me with the opportunity.” Providing special
emphasis on the word ‘Senior.’

“It took a lot of hard work to get here and now that I am here I have to
work harder.”

However, Constantine makes it clear that National Team debutants are not
there for the sake of it and the Players have to prove themselves not only
on the pitch, but also off the pitch.

“Discipline off the pitch is paramount as is performance on the pitch. The
objective of a Player is to catch the eye of the Coach and that’s when he
gets a call to the National Team,” the Coach explains.

“The Player then needs to work hard enough to make it to the final squad.
His objective is to be in the starting XI and the hardest part is to stay
in the starting XI,” he adds. “The boys have grown over the last couple of
years and we will have a closer look at them over the next few days. They
are on the right track provided they continue to work harder.”

Buttocks Tattoo Terror Lands Rotherham Pair In Hospital
2017-2-08

A furious row has broken out between a local tattoo artist and his client after
what started out as a routine inking session, left both of them requiring
emergency hospital treatment.

Furious film fan and part time plus size model Tracey Munter (23), had visited
the Ink It Good Tattoo Emporium on Wellgate last week to have the finishing
touches applied to a double buttock representation of the chariot race scene
from the iconic 1959 film, Ben Hur. Tattooist Jason Burns takes up the story.

“It was a big job in more ways than one.”; he told us “I’d just lit a roll up
and was finishing off a centurions helmet. It’s delicate, close up work. Next
thing is, I sense a slight ripple in the buttock cleavage area just around
Charlton Heston’s whip, and a hissing sound – more of a whoosh than a rasp –
and before I know what’s happening, there’s a flame shooting from her arse to
my fag (cigarette) and my beards gone up like an Aussie bush fire.”;

Jason says he rushed to the studio sink to quell the flames, only to turn round
and see Tracey frantically fanning her buttock area with a damp towel. The
flames had travelled down the gas cloud and set fire to her thong which was
smoking like a cheap firework.
“To be honest”, said Jason, “I didn’t even realise she was wearing one. You’d
need a sodding mining licence and a torch to find out for sure. She could have
had a complete wardrobe  in there and I’d have been none the wiser.”;

Jason and Tracey were taken to Rotherham District Hospital accident and
emergency department where they were treated for minor burns and shock. Both
are adamant that the other is to blame.

“I’m furious”; said Jason, “I’ve got a face like a mange-ridden dog and my left
eyebrows not there any more. I don’t know about Ben Hur – Gone With The Wind’s
more like it. You don’t just let rip in someone’s face like that. It’s
dangerous.”;

But  Tracey remains both angry and unrepentant;
“I’m still in agony,”; she said, “;and Charlton Heston looks more like Sidney
bloody Poitier now. Jason shouldn’t have had a fag on the go and there’s no
way I’d guff on purpose. He’d had me on all fours for nearly an hour. I can
only put up with that for so long before nature takes its course. My Kev knows
that. I give him my five second warning and I’d have done the same for Jason,
but I didn’t get chance – it just crept out.”;

Ted Walters from the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service wasn’t surprised
when we told him what had happened “People just don’t appreciate the dangers.
“; he told us, “We get called out to more flatulence ignition incidents than
kitchen fires these days, now people have moved over to oven chips. We have a
slogan ‘Flame ‘n fart – keep ’em apart’. Anyone engaging in an arse inking
scenario would do well to bear that in mind in future.”;

[Goanet] Power play: What the BJP's deals in Goa and Manipur should teach the Congress By Rajdeep Sardesai

2017-03-14 Thread Roger D'Souza
Power play: What the BJP's deals in Goa and Manipur should teach the
Congress Politics is not an ashram for saints: the relentless pursuit of
power is at the core of politics. [image: Power play: What the BJP's deals
in Goa and Manipur should teach the Congress] PTI
Yesterday ·
Rajdeep Sardesai

So the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to form the government in Manipur and
Goa, adding two more states to its kitty. In both states the pattern is
disturbingly similar: a hung assembly where the Congress is the single
largest party but just short of a majority, the BJP is a relatively distant
second (but with a higher vote share), and smaller parties hold the key to
government formation. In both states, the governors are elderly BJP leaders
enjoying the sinecure of a Raj Bhavan and in both states, frankly, the BJP
has moved faster and with greater desire than the Congress to capture power.

In a tweet ,
I described the speed with which the BJP moved as a sign of the party’s
“hunger” for power. It’s a “dil maange more” avaricious mindset that has
led the BJP to try and gobble up one state government after another. When I
tweeted this, I was accused by a Congress spokesperson of justifying
horse-trading and the failure of the governor to invite the single largest
party to form a government.

Wrong I say on both counts. I wasn’t justifying horse trading at all or
making it seem virtuous: the fact is, in small state assemblies in
particular, “jod-tod” is a dark, but inescapable part of the political
landscape. The Congress has done it in the past, now the BJP is just as
adroit at playing the “aya Ram, gaya Ram” game (or in Goa in the past
described as “aya D’souza, gaya D’souza”). Unless the political culture
changes and ethical behaviour is rewarded by voters, the temptation will
always be there to make or break governments by switching sides. Moreover,
there is nothing in the Constitution that mandates that only the single
largest party must be invited to form a government; the principle now very
clearly is to invite the party which can offer the possibility of a stable
government.
The stronger brand

Truth is, in both states, the smaller parties and independents have chosen
the BJP over the Congress, largely because a Narendra Modi-led BJP is a
more viable political brand across the country. Truth also is that the
ruling party at the Centre has a greater chance to woo smaller parties with
various inducements. Why should a four-MLA Naga Party in Manipur side with
a three-time Congress chief minister like Ibobi Singh who they accuse of
marginalising them when they could easily cut a deal with the Centre? Ditto
with the smaller parties and independents in Goa. Truth again is, money
power does play a major role in such dealings and the BJP is arguably the
most cash-rich party in the country at the moment, much like the Congress
was in its pomp.

My own belief therefore is that both the major parties should get off their
moral perch. The BJP can no longer call itself a party with a difference.
It has openly encouraged defections in Uttarakhand from the Congress, it
has swallowed up the Congress in Arunachal and now threatens to do the same
in Manipur. In Goa too, it has pushed to form a government even after its
sitting chief minister and several ministers were defeated. That it has
agreed to “sacrifice” and send back its Union defence minister for
government formation is a sign of its willingness to go the extra mile, and
perhaps even its desperation not to lose out in the power game.

“Saam daam” rajneeti is now just as much a part of the BJP’s DNA as it has
been of the Congress in the past. Let not Modi or Amit Shah kid us that the
BJP is pure like Maa Ganga: the pollution of power has affected it too. At
the same time, politics is not an ashram for saints: the relentless pursuit
of power is at the core of politics. Morality is for TV studio discussions,
not for the real world of rajneeti.
Key players

While the BJP ponders over its moral corrosion, the Congress needs to take
a hard look at another stark fact: the kingmakers in both states are,
ironically, former Congressmen. In Manipur (also referred to as Money-pur’

2017-03-14 Thread George Pinto
Goan Sewer Rats today rejoiced they were no longer considered the lowest form
of life, an honour now bestowed on certain Goan politicians. The Union of Goan
Sewer Rats also filed a formal FIR for being publicly insulted by being
compared to certain Goan politicians. Goan forward, the Union has kindly
requested that the public refrain from any negative references to them when
