[Goanet] Remembering Dominic D'Souza | Positive People

2017-04-10 Thread Peter F. Borges
Dear Friends,

Warm Greetings from Positive People

With a humble beginning in 1992, Positive People has come a long way in its
endeavour to address HIV in Goa (India) and now is in 25th year of its
existence.

We achieved our first milestone in 1992 itself when a revolutionary fight
led by Late Dominic D’Souza, our Founder led to the amendment of the Goa
Public Health Act which called for mandatory isolation of people living
with HIV. Since then, we have been pioneers in the efforts to address HIV
in Goa for the last 25 years with the unstinted support and generous
contribution of well-wishers, the government as
well as donors.

We are now the only organization in the state addressing HIV in a holistic
manner, with interventions in prevention, care and support and advocacy. We
are also the only organization which has interventions in Goa with people
who inject drugs with a full-fledged oral substitution therapy centre.

We are committed to enhance and diversify our programmes keeping in mind
the needs of people living with HIV
and people who inject drugs
. On this momentous occasion of the silver jubilee year, Positive People
proposes to publish a commemorative souvenir.

We would like you to write a message which will be published in our
souvenir. We would also appreciate if you contribute towards advertisement
in our souvenir.
Get in touch with us at peter.bor...@positivepeoplegoa.org or 9923700342.

You could visit us at www.positivepeoplegoa.org for more information.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

[Goanet] MEANS TO REDUCE ACCIDENTS

2017-04-10 Thread Stephen Dias
National statistics just released have revealed that every year 15 lacs
major accidents occur in India. Of these 1.5 lacs result in fatalities. The
reasons given for these accidents are varied. They are due to drunken
driving, rash and regligent driving, bad condition of roads, lack of
sufficient lighting along the roads, overspeeding, overtaking and
unlicenced drivers.
Accidents due to all the above causes can be reduced drastically if
stringent measures to rectify each of these causes are implemented .Ten per
cent fatalities is a very large proportion and if monitoring of traffic
checks on drivers, better illumination of roads, awareness programmes and
enploying roads signs as well as demarcating accident prone areas are
identified immediately. Speed limits and strict tests for issuing licences
can reduce fatalities to a great extent.

[Goanet] Sal locals feel ‘ overtaxed’ in their village

2017-04-10 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

Sal village which is along the Goa- Maharashtra border at Dodamarg is one
of the picturesque villages attracting the tourists with several
guesthouses.

A small village with just seven wards, Sal is rich in natural resources
including water as many villagers are still into agriculture. The elected
panch members include Ramnath Baikar, Pranali Naik; Aapa Raut; Ganesh Raut;
Ajjan Naik; Ghanasham Raut and Deepa Raut.

The panchayat is facing a host of problems with the bandhara issue being
the long pending one. The inauguration of bridge for the light motor
vehicles over the bandhara connecting Sal to Ibrampur- Pernem made it
famous. But the popularity of the spot has been a cause for concern for the
villagers as they feel insecure in their village.

The gram sabha had in the past taken several resolutions to stop people
from entering the waters at the bandhara which continues till date.

“ On several occasions we wrote letters to the Chief Minister and the
higher authorities to stop the picnickers from coming here. But they have
failed to act against them. A part of the bandhara comes under the
jurisdiction of Ibrampur panchayat and we feel that they should act in this
regard,” Sal sarpanch Ghanasham Raut informed.

The villagers also complain that the agriculture department and the forest
department have not taken any steps to minimize the bison and monkeys
menace as these animals have destroyed the fields.

“ There have been several instances when our fields have been destroyed by
bison, monkeys and peacocks and despite complaining to the Agriculture
Department nothing has happened,” complained Deelip Desai, a farmer.

Another major problem the panchayat faces, especially after the famous Gade
festival is that of garbage.

During the three- day festival thousands of people throng this village and
litter the area with the garbage and the panchayat finds it difficult to
clear the same.

What has further irked the villagers is the recent increase in the fees for
obtaining several NOCs.

“ They have increased the fees for NOCs which is almost 150 times” Gajanan
Raut, informed adding that “ We don’t know the reason behind this and it
was done without taking us into confidence.” As per the information the
income certificate fees have been hiked from Rs 20 to Rs 50. NOC for water
and electric connection has been increased from Rs 50 to Rs 500. Besides
this, the villagers have now to pay Rs 500 as house transfer fees, house
tax bifurcation fees and business NOC fees. The fees for issuing of
residence, marriage, house repair and other certificates too have been
hiked.

Sal, which is still away from the town, has now slowly started developing
and at several places the land has been developed into plots. The same is
being sold to non- Goans, which has raised several eyebrows in the village.

[Goanet] Good Friday

2017-04-10 Thread Jude Botelho
10-Apr-2017
Dear Friend,
Why call it “Good Friday”? Good for whom? It is good and necessary for us to
contemplate Jesus on the cross in his agony and death to realize how much God
loved us in Jesus. The cross without Jesus is meaningless, and the world’s
suffering is un-understandable without Jesus. We need the cross to comprehend
the problem of evil and its all-encompassing presence in the world today. We
need Jesus on the cross to face our cross and to draw strength from Him. May we
have a Good Friday, affirming God’s boundless unconditional love for us! –Fr.
Jude.
Reflection: Good Friday “Although He was Son, He suffered, obedient unto
death!” 14-Apr-2017Isaiah 52: 13-53:12;          Heb. 4: 14-16; 5: 7-9;
 John 18: 1-19:42;

In today’s first reading Isaiah paints a startling portrait of the suffering
servant of Yahweh. This suffering servant has a dignity about himself and his
spirit is intact and unbroken in the midst of all that he suffers. Physically
he was abused and reduced to a subhuman condition. In the face of all that he
suffered there is no bitterness, no anger, no resentment, no complaint.
Describing the suffering servant, Isaiah gives us a model of how a Christian is
called to respond to suffering. Jesus embraced the cross and transformed it
into an expression of love for all. The cross, the object of death, can become
the object of life for ourselves and for others, if it is embraced with faith
and with love, as coming from God’s hands.

The KissI stand by the bed where a young woman lies, her face post-operative,
her mouth twisted in palsy; clownish. A tiny twig of the facial muscles of her
mouth had been severed. She will be thus from now on. The surgeon had followed
with religious fervour the curve of her flesh; I promise you that.
Nevertheless, to remove the tumour from her cheek, I had cut the little nerve.
Her husband was in the room. He stands on the opposite side of the bed, and
together they seem to dwell in the evening lamplight, isolated from me,
private. Who are they, I ask myself, he and this wry-mouth I have made, who
gaze at and touch each other so generously, greedily? “Will my mouth always be
like this?” she asks. “Yes,” I say, “it will be. It is because the nerve was
cut.” She nods and is silent. But the young man smiles. “I like it,” he says,
“it is kind of cute.” All at once I know who he is. I understand, and I lower
my gaze. One is not bold in an encounter with a god. Unmindful he bends to kiss
her crooked mouth, and I am so close I can see how he twists his own lips to
accommodate her, to show her that their kiss still works.Richard Selzer in
‘Stories for the Heart’
Today’s Gospel is a gospel of paradox: it presents a mortal conflict between
good and evil, a battle between the Prince of Peace and the prince of this
world. Good Friday is a day of paradox because an instrument of death becomes
the source of life. It is also a day of mystery because the sinless one became
as sin; a day revealing mankind at its worst and God at His best. Jesus on the
cross transforms the curse of the cross into an instrument of blessing and
eternal life. In the Gospel there are several facets of the passion we could
reflect upon: The agony in the garden and the fearless confrontation of Jesus
with those who came to arrest him, the triple denial of Peter in the presence
of a maid servant, the trial and confrontation with Pilate. “Are you the king
of the Jews?”, and the lingering unanswered question: “What is the truth?” We
could meditate on the Way of the Cross and his final moments on the cross
itself leading to his painful cry, echoed by all who suffer: “My God my God why
have you forsaken me.” We could reflect on the first words of Jesus on the
cross pleading for forgiveness for his people: “Father forgive them for they
know not what they do.” Jesus becomes the Lamb of God that takes away the sins
of the world. He breaks the chain of violent response to injustice by offering
forgiveness instead of vengeance. By accepting his passion and enduring his
cross he earns redemption for all mankind. Forgiveness and reconciliation are
offered to all who seek them.
Looking for forgivenessThere is a Spanish tale of a father and son who had
become estranged after years of bitter strife. The son finally ran away.
Finding that his son was missing, the father became heartbroken and set off to
find him. He searched for months to no avail. Finally, in a desperate effort,
the father placed an ad in the city newspaper. The ad read: Dear Paco, Meet me
in front of the bell tower in the plaza at noon on Saturday. All is forgiven. I
love you. Your Father. That Saturday eight hundred Pacos showed up at the plaza
looking for forgiveness and love from their fathers.Anonymous

[Goanet] FATHER BISMARQUE DESERVES A DECENT FUNERAL

2017-04-10 Thread Stephen Dias
JUSTICE TO FR. BISMARQUE AFTER THE BURIAL?

With reference to a letter written in one of the section of Press on 9th
April 2017 by Luis Carlos Roncon from St Cruz titled " Fr. BISMARQUE
DESERVES A DECENT FUNERAL" I would like to react which I did not agree his
certain points while the Editor has cleared that letter and many a times
our good letters are sent to dust bin?
Doesn't the learned Editor know who also happens to be a Catholic, that
once a person is dead his soul is with the Lord ? There is no need for the
body of Fr. Bismarque to have a decent funeral after having been denied
justice and subject to grave indignities. Luis Carlos Roncon rightly writes
that the dead body of Fr. Bismarque is being tortured in GMC morgue! What
is more important is justice to be done for the cause of his death. Once
the burial is done everybody will totally bury is cry for justice.
Only the family has the right to conduct the funeral and not others.

[Goanet] Sanvordem Headmaster Knighted?

2017-04-10 Thread Roland Francis
I was preparing to learn how a Chinchinim headmaster of a Sanvordem school got
knighted by Her Majesty. Surely there would be a interesting story behind it.

This was second post where Sir J D'Cruz was honourably mentioned.

Imagine my disappointment when I realized that the peerage was not a peerage
but only a local colloquialism and form of address for a school teacher.

In any case, a toast to Sir Teacher J D'Cruz a man of honour and learning.

[Goanet] ABSURD ORDER FOR LIQUOR TO STOP SALES ON GOA HIGHWAYS

2017-04-10 Thread Stephen Dias
BANNING LIQUOR ON HIGHWAYS?

The main reason for the SC banning liquor on highways is because the
drivers gets drunk and kills people on the road. This looks funny to make a
law because anyway a driver will always gets drunk even all the outlets on
highways whether on 500 kms or 1000 kms is strictly made to stop selling
liquors in bars, tavernas in this tiny state of Goa. So, let people have
their own way of selling liquors but impose checks on drivers and catch
them with the help of alcoholmeters and strong police checks etc and get
their licenses confiscated or even cancelled for some period of time.

Why others should be penalized or suffer for drinking their social drinks?
This is my opinion.

[Goanet] SATISH SONAK’S VISION AND MISSION FOR GOA MUST LIVE ON

2017-04-10 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Satish Sonak was a truly remarkable gentleman who cared about his fellow
human beings, championing the causes particularly of the less privileged
and disadvantaged strata of society around him, willing to stand up and
dared to be counted where others feared to venture. A true friend and
companion of the poor and voiceless.

Right from his student's days Satish Sonak was an avid reader and fiery
orator, whether in English, Konkani or Marathi. He also contributed thought
provoking articles to several newspapers and, in recent times, interviewed
on television several eminent personalities in various fields of public
life. Indeed he demonstrated fabulous skills of interviewing -- limiting
himself to a minimum of verbiage and bringing forth from the interviewee
the full range of his thoughts and experience. That showed us, the readers
and viewers, Satish Sonak’s intellectual accumen.

Doing justice to his profession as a lawyer he became one of the foremost
human rights warriors, taking up many causes such as the rights of women
and children, marginalized tribes, the physically and mentally
disadvantaged, anti-corruption and the rights of the common man. During the
1979 student agitation for 50% bus concession I was very proud to work
alongside him.

His last battle was to take up cudgels to seek justice for the Lamanis on
Goa’s beaches who the government is determined to wipe off the map of Goa.
Even in death, his donation was the gift of his precious eyesight to
another human being. Satish Sonak was indeed an inspiration to all and
particularly the youth of Goa who are the only hope for our sinking State.

Over the years Satish Sonak did everything possible for Goa. He was
strongly opposed to corruption and the menacing culture of Casinos
engulfing the State. Goa's greed-infected political class should introspect
and reflect as to the manner in which they have continued the rank and
blatant degradation of Goa, something that Satish Sonak was always very
concerned and extremely disturbed about. Satish Sonak must have been very
distressed over the sordid political developments in the State over the
last month with Goa corruptly, unethically and immorally bending backwards
instead of marching Forward.

Satish Sonak led a very simple and humble life. He may have been one of the
few established Advocates in Goa who never owned a four wheeler. After
leading a very modest and humble life, his final rites were also very
unique devoid of all those age old rituals and established protocol. The
great man that he was, Satish Sonak got an Aam Aadmi's final farewell, he
very much and rightly deserved.

Our true tribute to this great and distinguished departed soul, would be to
steadfastly carry on that great vision and mission that our Satish Sonak
had embarked on. Let us all vow to carry on the unfinished task Satish
Sonak had undertaken to Save what remains of Goa.

We will all one day depart this world, but our Goa must truly live sans all
this lip sympathy and rhetoric talk of Goem, Goenkar and Goenkarponn. And
that would be living up to the hopes and aspiration of our great warrior
Satish Sonak who a true Goenkar he always was.

[Goanet] Holy Thursday

2017-04-10 Thread Jude Botelho
09-Apr-2017
Dear Friend,
>From ancient times the Church has set apart Holy Thursday as the day to
>consider what Jesus did and taught during his last meal on earth. Holy
>Thursday has been called ‘Maundy’ Thursday, to remind us of the new
>Mandate/Commandment of the Lord: “Love one another as I have loved you.” This
>evening’s readings from Exodus, First Corinthians and the Gospel are about
>remembering that command: “Do this in remembrance of me.” How often do we
>remember what Jesus has done for us? May we have a love-filled Holy Thursday!
>–Fr. Jude
Reflections: Holy Thursday “Make me like you! You were a servant! Make me one
too!” 13-Apr-2017Exodus 12; 1-8, 11-14;          1 Cor. 11: 23-26;
John 13: 1-15;

The Book of Exodus tells us how the Lord ordered the Israelites to keep the
Paschal meal. Each family had to kill a lamb, smear the doorpost with the
lamb’s blood, and eat the meal standing to signify their readiness to pass to
the land of freedom. It would also signify the passing of the angel over the
Israelites houses marked by the blood. To remember this, God ordered the
Israelites to keep the ‘Passover’ Feast. The lamb sacrificed was eaten with
unleavened bread and bitter herbs and the father of the family would explain
the meal meaning. Our Eucharistic celebration is a commemoration of the Paschal
meal, reminding us that we are called to pass from the slavery to freedom. It
recalls that God has passed over our sins, thanks to the blood of Jesus Christ
through whose death we are given life. Faith is remembering what matters!
Don’t forget what really mattersCarl Coleman was driving to work one morning
when he bumped fenders with another motorist. Both cars stopped, and the woman
driving the other car got out to survey the damage. She was distraught. It was
her fault she admitted, and hers was a new car, less than two days from the
show room. She dreaded facing her husband. Coleman was sympathetic; but he had
to pursue the exchange of license and registration data. She reached into her
glove compartment to retrieve the documents in an envelope. On the first paper
to tumble out, written in her husband’s distinctive hand, were the words: “In
case of accident, remember, Honey, it’s you I love, not the car.”Paul Harvey in
‘Stories of the Heart’
While the focus of the celebration is on the Eucharist, John’s Gospel is that
of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet and commanding the disciples to wash one
another’s feet. John wrote his gospel more than fifty years after the last
supper had taken place; however he does not narrate the institution of the Holy
Eucharist, since Matthew, Mark and Luke had already done it. His Christians not
only knew about the Last Supper but they celebrated the Eucharist every Sunday.
But John wanted to remind the Christians of the central point of Jesus’
teaching, his new commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you.” John was
very keen that all Christians should learn that the celebration of the
Eucharist should lead us to practice Jesus’ command of loving service. To drive
home this message he tells us how Jesus washed the feet of his disciples during
the Last Supper. No other Gospel narrates this event. The setting for Jesus’
symbolic action is his last Passover meal. Jesus’ self emptying love urges him
to offer his disciples the cleansing touch of water and the loving touch of his
hands. The Gospel themes of water and washing will be taken up again during the
Easter vigil and linked with the baptismal themes of regeneration and new life.
Today’s gospel invites us to be like Jesus in deeds of service.
Do you know where your towel is?Several years ago, the bishop and leadership of
the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference handed dishtowels to annual conference
members at closing worship. We were instructed to bring them back at a later
date and to tell the story of how they had been used in service. When the time
comes for the report, the joke circulated, how many of us will know where our
towels are? Several years removed from that experience, I must confess that,
for a while, I ended up enshrining that dishtowel with other holy relics and
never used it. It continues to shout to me about service from its current home
in the dishtowel drawer — though still seldom used. How does Christ continue to
speak to you or your congregation about service through everyday symbols of
service?-Sermon Notes
Make me like Joe!Joe was a drunk who was miraculously converted at the Bowery
mission. Prior to his conversion, he had gained the reputation of being a dirty
wino for whom there was no hope, only a miserable existence in a ghetto. But
following his conversion to a new life with God everything changed. Joe became
the most caring person that anyone associated with the mission had ever known.
Joe spent his days and nights hanging out at the mission, doing whatever was
needed to be done. There was never anything he was

[Goanet] ABUSE OF POWER

2017-04-10 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Rohan Khaunte and Vinod Paliencar started their innings as Ministers on a
very wrong note by high-handedly acting like cowboys. The role of Ministers
and MLAs is to formulate good policies while also enacting the needed laws
and not to check the muster rolls of staff in the departments. That is the
task of the Head of every department which needs to be overseen by the
Chief Secretary of the State. That our publicity hungry Ministers and MLAs
cover up their follies by taking pleasure in even inaugurating toilets and
culverts is truly pathetic. Watching these nutters break a coconut every
time a road is being hot-mixed is yet another eyesore.
