[Goanet] Who started World Goa Day ?

2017-08-21 Thread Vivian A. DSouza
Let us put this controversy to rest.  It is apparent that the notion of a day
to celebrate Goa sprouted up spontaneously in various locales all over the
world where Goans reside.  We will never resolve the issue of  who was the
first to start the commemoration of World Goa Day.  But it is to the credit of
Goans outside of Goa, who pine for the homeland that they once knew, that they
commemorate a day, not necessarily a fixed date, to celebrate their
"goanness".Can we just live it at that ?

2017-08-21 Thread Eugene Correia
There was an article on EDMs in Mail Today (Delhi's India Today group daily
newspaper) on Sunday. It mentioned Goa.

[Goanet] Two Down, How Many More To Go?

2017-08-21 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Goa is a good place to die. Maybe a Bollywood director will make a
movie on this theme. The person who dies could be an Indian or a
foreigner. The movie, of course, will be based on a true life story.
No shortage of stories on this theme. And Bollywood is great at
making movies based on a true life story or a variation of a Hollywood
movie. So, I say, go for it!

Rape, drugs, murder, and spicy Goan food could all add up to a great
red hot masala mix, the mother of all masala movies. And, oh yes,
casinos and cops and robbers. Everyone has a role to play in this
movie except the politician. After all, a politician would never stoop
so low. They are our heros.

With the death of two young people who allegedly overdosed at two
separate rave parties, all of a sudden it is raining drugs! Monsoon
magic? For years politicians have been crying hoarse: there are no
drugs in Goa. Maybe this could be the sub-plot of the movie.

The location of the movie has to be in the north of Goa. It will
reduce the costs of production as no elaborate stage sets are
required; natural and authentic settings in Anjuna and other places
are for the asking at a small price. And, if we wait for a couple of
years - the move over casinos - now in the Mandovi River will welcome
everyone including the movie production crew on land at Mopa. Sorry,
you unlucky people who live in the south of Goa. Eat your heart out.

Maybe, on seconds thoughts, the movie idea is not a good idea after
all. I may lose a lot of friends! And, as we all know, Bollywood has
portrayed Goa and Goans in a bad light for years. And, now: et tu
Joao? Forget every word I've written. Yes. It is better to live in
virtual reality than reality. Two young men have died. People go to
EDMs and big scale rave parties to get high on drugs. It is Goa's
biggiest consumer drugs market! Everybody knows this much! Shut down
rave parties!

There is a problem, though. It will make for a lousy movie. And,
worse, it is not Goemkarponn.

Re: [Goanet] World Goa Day

2017-08-21 Thread Eugene Correia
I think it was in the early 80s that the a festival of Goan culture was
held at the famous Harbourfront in downtown Toronto. I think it was the
late Ladis da Silva, from Zanzibar and who wrote some books, including the
Americanization of Goans, was was fully or partly responsible for it. I
will stand corrected if anyone with more knowledge about it posts it here.
As for myself, I will try to talk to an oldtimer who came to Toronto in the
70 and who was part of the founding members of GOA.
In 1988, the Harbourfront was again the venue for a cultural fest organized
by the GOA as part of the !st International Goan Convention.
As for Fred's usual questioning, it's good to get facts correctly. At least
for historians and journalists. Even there was controversy over whether
GOA's convention was the "first" as some people pointed out to the
convention held in Paris.
If memory serves me right, the Paris meeting was by pro-Portuguese people
scattered in Europe. It was said that the meeting was attended by those who
hated the Liberation/Aggression of Goa. Don't remember if it was by the
League of Goans (maybe I didn't get the name correct) based in London.
Let me tell Fred that the Alliance had a website but was shut down because
of no money forthcoming to run it. Antonio Mascarenhas, a former executive
member of GOA (maybe even its gen. sec. at one time) was associated with
it, as he has his own Calungure or Candolim association.
In a talk with him many years ago, he said Rene would not do anything but
also dictate. I wish Rene would answer such a charge, and also let us know
if the alliance is still existing.
Why is the GA UK not holding a WGD? I know it is holding the Goan festival,
just as GOA Toronto is holding its Viva Goa.
Fred, this is forum for discussion. I am not here to run down Rene or
anyone else. If you have information on the alliance, please let us know.
Debate, in a way, is stirring the pot, and maybe the truth will come out of
it.
Let me tell Fred that I first met Rene in Goa when he organised a group (I
think) from Uganda. This was perhaps in the late 70s and before I migrated
to Canada. I then met him in London, visiting him at his place of work.
Again I met him for the Goanetters Convention in Toronto.
Rene means well. i was told that he had ceased to be part of GA UK. Now
only Rene or the GA sec. can answer that. I write this because I want facts
to come out and not just "stir the pot".

[Goanet] AIFF Report : SANDESH IS A PLAYER WHO SHOULD BE PLAYING IN A BIGGER LEAGUE: STEPHEN CONSTANTINE + ATTACHED PICS

2017-08-21 Thread AIFF Media
Dear Colleagues,

Please find below the report regarding Stephen Constantine praising Sandesh
Jhingan

SANDESH IS A PLAYER WHO SHOULD BE PLAYING IN A BIGGER LEAGUE: STEPHEN
CONSTANTINE

*AIFF Media Team*

*MUMBAI:* As India gear up for the second match in the Hero International
tri-series against St Kitts and Nevis to be played at the Mumbai Football
Arena on August 24, Coach Stephen Constantine lavished huge praise on the
newly-appointed captain Sandesh Jhingan.

"The captain has to reflect the character of the team. He has to set the
tone of the team. Sandesh is a fighter like me who loves to lead the side
from the front,” Constantine said.

Jhingan, who leads the crop of the new breed of Indian Footballers had made
his debut for India against Nepal, which was Constantine’s first match as a
Coach in his second stint.

“Sandesh to me a player who should be playing is a bigger league,”
Constantine certified.

The defender par excellence, wasn’t too much willing to be over the moon.
“Playing for your Country is itself a great honour and here I am, leading
my Country,” he stated.

Jhingan has played a stellar role in the Indian back-four along with Anas
Etathodika, Pritam Kotal, Narayan Das and Gurpreet Sandhu (in goal) in
helping India create a new record for Indian Football in winning nine
International matches (including the un-official match against Bhutan).

Constantine further went to say that Sandesh is a one of the 'leaders for
the future.'

"In coming days, at least we can identify Sandesh as a leader once Sunil
hangs his boots,” he maintained.

Meanwhile, Chhetri, along with Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Udanta Singh will
be joining the National Camp after Bengaluru FC’s AFC Cup stint.

India have won two of their two matches in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers
against Myanmar (away) and Kyrgyz Republic (at home) and will face Macau on
September 5 (in Macau).

[Goanet] praiseworhy observations.on Chinchinim market complex

2017-08-21 Thread Nelson Lopes
Praise worthy observations on market complex.

The much needed Chinchinim market complex is mired in unnecessary
controversies and the prolonged , further delay is avoidable. It finally
took the PP to make a passionate and worthy observations. He said it
pained him, as the project was of social importance. He made an impassionate
plea for understanding and reconciliation in the best interest of the
Village. He further added that there will always be difference of opinions
, objections, suggestions but that the will of the majority in a democracy
must prevail .His observations under circumstances are most welcomed and
received with appreciation.. He is perfectly justified when he opined that
all and any problems have solutions, which must be given priority over
dissent. The status and good will enjoyed by PP is indeed an eye opener, a
much needed fervent appeal for quick action and with his unqualified
support and blessings can fuel the completion of the needed facility at
the earliest..

A present look at the market is totally disgusting; The open spaces are
occupied by variety of vendors spreading filth and waste. Unauthorized
ghadas have sprung up overnight with or without patronage much to the
dismay of the public., while few illegal ones have been officially
dismantled. For sometime, CCC Executive members forced the fish sellers and
others to occupy inside of the market place.. The first floor is used for
gambling, games and unused for any designed , intended commercial activity
. A large area of the market space of would be market is in private
possession for commerce.. The haphazard parking on either side of a
busy, congested road is a safety concern, specially for a large student
population oftwo schools in the vicinity .The traffic signs ,road
markings, and temporary police enforcement regarding parking have all been
obliterated and have vanished. The garbage bins provided under Zilla
Parishaddisappeared overnight and became a football of political
rivalries. There is absolutely no arrangement at the market to collect
garbage or its disposal. It does not bother us a bit that animal waste etc
is dumped in nearby rivers polluting water bodies, emanating foul odour,
unbearable stench for the travelers. We seem to be perfectly comfortable
with unseen disposal of waste, and spotless cleanliness of the present
market. The footpaths mean for pedestrians are completely occupied by
vendors and it is unfortunate that Panchayat legitimizes fees collection
from footpath squatters

The new market complex can provide much better solutions to available area,
parking, orderly set up facility being away from settlements, decongest
the MDR road and with unlimited scope of expansion. The concerns of
garbage etc can be addressed, but priority of market complex is not
negotiable. Besides it can provide much needed revenue for the Panchayat
.The present market will be decongested from predominantly a residential
area. .The will to accept can find alternative . acceptable solutions to
all imagined and real impediments
