RESPONSE: Aree baba, I too replaced my entire rooms with LED bulbsmy
conclusions: They don't last three months in bathrooms..presumably because
of condensation, in fact they don't last too long in humid places, so this
could be a big problem for Goa. The only place where they have lasted some
time is our living room! So now back to the drawing board!

Re: [Goanet] Last Requiem For Goa Tourism

2017-10-06 Thread Roland Francis
The Last Requiem for Goa was sung not with Manohar Parrikar planning to
massively “increase tourist footfalls” in the coming years as VM’s article
claims, but with Goans adopting the greed and corruption culture of Indian
society not too long after 1961.

One can understand (not forgive or tolerate) the likes of an Alemao coming
from an education-lacking poor family getting hold of the reins of power and
using it to personally profit from loot and plunder, but one can neither
understand nor forgive people like the former CM, or as many allege the current
Office Holder who come from an educated and wealthy background doing the same
thing though they should have known better.

While a certain quantum of poor governance would have been inherited from 450
years of Portuguese rule, the massive turn for the worse took place among Goans
in less than a generation.

Goans who lived in Bombay seeing the slow change from British-inherited values
and principles established in that city to Indian-style democracy and chaos,
could easily foretell where “liberated” Goa was headed. The only surprise was
not only how fast but how severely it did.

The Goan community has not supported Milena Marques-Zachariah’s considerable

The Manglorean community on the other hand pushed its weight behind her effort
with both volunteering and finances but their support alone was not enough.

Congratulations Milena for your hard work for our community’s so called lingua

[Goanet] LED bulbs dont last the guaranted life

2017-10-06 Thread Nelson Lopes
Led bulbs to last 3 years

Three led bulbs were supplied to each household with great fanfare. It was
meant to reduce the electric consumption and thus an attractive computation
of energy saving proposal was highlighted. The households were assured of
replacement of the defective, non functional bulbs within 3 years. The
replacement was handled by the distant Electric Department , making it most
inconvenient for consumers to get replacement. Any replacement should have
been necessarily made available in local electricity offices., The
consumers are directed to seek the assistance from the central place
without being aware of the actual sitation of repalcement. The counter
handling replacement has been disbanded soon after, The replacement will
depend as when the stock are received from the supplier, we rare informed.
But the Dept is not even maintaining any records of needed replacement, if
the supplier has to act. .It was shocking revelation when very casually
questioned on the box of the bulbs, It was surprising that boxes are not
saved by most recipient and a deliberate, good excuse to deny the
replacement. .Nowhere, whether written or oral was ever conveyed to
preserve the containers for replacement.

The frequent fluctuations, surges in current, disconnections of supply are
bound to effect o the life span of these bulbs. The quality of LED bulbs
supplied is highly suspect, as many consumers have lost bulbs quite early,
forget about the 3 years guarantee .There is no doubt that free LED bulbs
are all paid by the citizens by indirect taxes.. The supplier has laughed
all the way to his bank account. Why the condition of replacement by the
authorities is not insisted upon and published publicly for information.
Is there any doubt that a slice of the profits have found its way into
private pockets to silence them on enforcement clause of replacement .The
answers provided of inability are indication of irresponsibility and
lackadaisical attitude. The Govt. of Goa enjoyed publicity connected and
earned political mileage with free distribution of led largesse The
defective and non functional LED bulbs must be replaced as per guarantee

[Goanet] Last Requiem for Goa Tourism?

2017-10-06 Thread V M
(link not available...)

This weekend, the first charter flight of the tourism season arrives
at Dabolim from Russia’s capital city of Moscow. But instead of cheer
or celebration for this official starting point of the high-demand
months that will last until next summer, there is plenty of reason for
trepidation and anxiety. Each of the past five years has seen a
dramatic rise in the number of visitors packing into India’s smallest
state, but there has been no accompanying rise in income or positive
benefits of any kind. Instead, a drastic shift downwards in the
tourist demographic now skews heavily domestic, male, and
lowest-budget. The only growth trends appear to be in crime, garbage,
destruction of the environment, and widespread social and cultural
degradation.

Like most crises that beset once-pristine Goa, successive
administrations have done nothing to ameliorate, and a lot to compound
the problems. When it comes to tourism, the political cadre
demonstrates especially dismal incompetence and mismanagement. Instead
of recognizing the obvious crisis, these so-called “leaders”
stubbornly persist on making matters worse, and pursuing the most
castastrophic policies. There are only empty promises, or – much worse
– abysmally wrong-headed policy decisions that are forced through to
cause huge damage. Thus it strikes real fear to hear chief minister
Manohar Parrikar say he’s intent on doubling “tourism footfalls in the
state from the present 60 lakh to 1.2 crore in the next five years.”
Should that disastrous goal come close to fruition, it will mean the
end of Goa once and for all.

There are innumerable errors and absurdities in Goa’s makeshift,
contradictory tourism policy, but the most fatal is blinkered emphasis
on mindlessly ramping up “tourism footfalls”, instead of responsibly
nurturing the original attributes that created the industry’s success.
Geoff Bolan of Sustainable Travel International (a USA-based NGO) puts
it succinctly, “A destination’s capacity for tourism functions much
like a concert venue’s capacity for concertgoers.” Surpass that
“carrying capacity” and you are on a slippery slope to suicide. “You
know when you see and feel overcrowding? When locals have a lot of
tension in relation to tourism?” Says Bolan, by then it is already
game over. “Let’s just be honest with it. You’re just too late.”

Much of Goa has probably already crossed that depressing tipping
point, with most of the coastline now in terminal decline. Everyone
knows it except the politicians, who will surely remain in denial even
after the final nails in the coffin. The eternal tragedy of India’s
best educated and wealthiest state continues to be the extraordinarily
poor decision-making of its political and economic elites. Meanwhile,
other parts of the country are making remarkable strides to achieve
better results. Several states require special entry permits to enter,
which controls numbers well. Sikkim has done a spectacular job of
controlling most of the adverse impact of increasing numbers of
travellers. Meanwhile, Kerala is a global star in this area, having
already won the United Nations award for sustainable tourism.

One valuable international example for Goa is Iceland, the tiny island
transformed into a global tourism magnet, partly because it provides
iconic locations to the ‘Game of Thrones’ blockbuster television
series. Very much like Goa, it has seen 25-30% growth in arrivals each
of the past five years (albeit from a far wealthier demographic). But
unlike India’s “sunshine state”, both the people and their leaders are
mostly united in believing the huge influx is not worth the attendant
environmental, social and cultural costs. Even though tourism is by
far the largest segment of the economy (again like Goa) the government
will most likely soon place non-negotiable annual caps on the amount
of travellers allowed in several environmentally sensitive areas, and
will also levy a special tourist tax that will be spent on sustainable
infrastructure and preservation efforts.

In Barcelona, the wildly popular capital of Catalonia in Spain, locals
are (once more just like Goans) regularly outnumbered by tourists, but
(unlike Goa) are doing something about it. Even the deputy mayor,
Janet Sanz says, “We understand that other people love our city. But
we're becoming a tourist theme park. People live and work here. It's
not just a fun weekend place.” So, her administration regulates the
numbers of visitors entering locations like the city market. Many
neighborhoods have formed “anti-tourism” groups to prevent disruption
of their daily lives. And earlier this year, several thousand
residents marched down the famous La Rambla to protest against the
volume of tourists, and the anti-local gentrification of their
neighborhoods. Viva Espana, for another important example that is
relevant to Goa.

[Goanet] FOOTBALL BALL AT CHURCH SQUARE AND ON THE MIRAMAR BEACH?

2017-10-06 Thread Stephen Dias
Dear Rui Ferreira
Panjimite and Lawyer

You are staying very close to this Church square and being an advocate, why
did you not take this matter as serious issue? Is CCP sleeping? .
How you tolerated this Football BALL coming in front of the Panjim Church
although it could be a world event but displaying this BALL on the footpath
in front of our Panjim Church should not have been permitted. Azad Maidan
could have been a better choice. Tomorrow somebody may use the same
technique and display, say Nadkarsur and other Sigmo and Carnival
exhibits etc for business/propaganda purposes in the same spot. I saw
yesterday at 6 PM artists working on construction of this BALL to be
displayed. Shame for Goan players being out of this game selection?
The Church being a world famous should have been kept away from such
propaganda and advertisement etc I do not understand why our
Archbishop have not objected it? What is happening in this Panjim ?
Even another BALL is being displayed on the sands right on the Miramar
beach when already this beach is in ruins with the Lucky seven resided with
comfort for 72 days over there and it seems this beach is now under
access or inspection by the NIO and other agencies including the Court.
When we will get a report? Why the Government is closing their eyes? For
what purpose? I do not understand when damaged is already taken place to
this Beach with the tourists playing football and other games on the beach,
as erosion is very clearly seen. Some of our well known
environmentalists are quite except very few of them and my colleague Dr.
Antonio Mascarenhas ex-GCZMA expert is the only one who is doing most of
the noise. I fought for this Lucky seven to get out from this area and
finally she left crying. Hope she never set her foot in Mandovi after dry
docking at Jaigad. If she is allowed she must get approvals from MMD and
other govt shipping agencies. CM already set a deadline to get rid of these
casinos and why she ( Lucky seven ) should be invited?
Better people of Panjim should get up and stand on the roads for a better
and clean Panjim before it is too late.

[Goanet] WORLD CUP A VERY DAMP SQUIB FOR GOA

2017-10-06 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The FIFA U-17 World Cup being hosted by India with some matches being
played in Goa brings no cheers to our football loving State as there is not
a single Goan player in the Indian squad. This, despite football being the
official Sport of the State.

In 2012, the Goa Government created the Goa Football Development
Corporation (GFDC) with a whopping five crore annual budget but it has
ended up being another white elephant being unable to groom the young
football talent in the State.

To add to Goa’s woes the soccer outfit FC Goa which is now owned by Casino
Tycoon Jaydev Modi instead of tapping young football talent in the State
has gone scouting for football talent all the way in the North East. It
would have been a relief for Goa if Jaydev Modi had also taken his Casinos
along.

It would now be prudent to wind up the GFDC and entrust the Goa Football
Association the sole task of professionally uplifting and restoring the
past football glory in the State.
