Oscar: Someone mentioned on face book that he was the caretaker of two
houses in
Goa and that he is happy to give them if anyone wants to use. Look at
theSee the cheek of this fella

Hi Oscar,
Why do find it cheeky of him? Did you look into it? Or is it that you
simply find it obtuse that he says "he is happy to give them if anyone
wants to use."? Did you read give, as take it all. Perhaps he knows how to
evict people. Perhaps such behavior is considered as being naive?

Years ago, while I was in Goa, one Goan stalwart offered me a place
overlooking a body of riverine expanse. Then, my emails went without
receiving a response. Perhaps they went into Spam. Perhaps he felt he
should not have made the offer, but to his credit he did. Btw, people like
him are very savvy in property related matters, and are serious landlords.
That place would have helped me a lot. I would have used it respectfully as
a studio. He would have access to my skills, and artistic rigor for sure,
and would have generated specific projects. I would have access to his
collection and selling say picture books, unique Konkani abecedaries,
posters, etc., would not have been an issues. My life could have changed (I
and surely moved into other directions. Things may (I say may) have changed
for him too (in my opinion), and I believe for others. When I would have
packed up and moved on when told to. No rancor. No malice. I am happy that
he asked. I know. I know that some of us simply want a little graciousness,
even if it dissipates into "kaim nam." I do not know why, no need to
speculate and valuate someones mind, but it is what it is. No judgements.
And what I mentioned about hopes, are not misgivings.

I often find a blanket confidence in the way we Goans see things. Now, as I
have always maintained: Goans are not and will never be the same. One does
not need to have a grip of sociology to understand this.

So help me understand what you meant by seeing cheekines in what that
person (fella) said? Go a bit deeper, bro? Tell me!

[Goanet] A man of the cloth, who passionately loved the book: Fr Nascimento J Mascarenhas (78)

2018-01-07 Thread Goanet Obits
Really sorry to share the sad news of the demise of
Fr Nascimento J Mascarenhas. A priest for five decades, many
of us would better know him as a writer in history, a person
who crafted many charming accounts of Goan life.

He wrote books on Church history, the priests of Goa and
prominent Goan achievers. He was a delightful author to work
with -- patient, polite and ever-understanding. Wish more
young priests were imbibed with his intellectual curiosity
and willingness to share their knowledge. In the last few
years, he was battling health issues -- heart, high diabetes
and its complications -- but always wore his broad smile.

His work and contribution will be long remembered.

Fr Nascimento passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2018, at the
Margao Holy Spirit Church, where he was based for some time
now. (Together with his neighbour there the late Fr Ivo, he was also a
contributor to Goanet.) A Eucharistic celebration will be
held for his soul on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 11 am.
Thereafter, the funeral cortege will leave to Mae de Deus
Church in his home village of Saligao, at 1.30 pm, for the
Holy Eucharist at 4 pm, followed by burial.

To celebrate his work, Goanet shares an excerpt from Saligao
Serenade [http://saligaoserenade.com/], the blog that Val
Souza (IT guru in Mumbai) set up for Fr N.

What are Goa’s villages famous for?
by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas

najo...@gmail.com

While tourists visiting Goa are familiar only with
the beaches and famous places of worship, local
Goans will tell you that many villages of Goa are
renowned for a particular produce or commodity.

As we sat one May evening on the parapet of the Saligao
church compound, a few of us began to enumerate the Goan
villages of our region (Bardez) and what they produced or
what they were famous for. Albino D’Souza from Saligao's
Nigvaddo ward said that Moira was famous for bananas. Parra
was famous in Goa for watermelons, asserted Justino Fernandes
from Grande Morodd. From Cotula was Dominic Andrade, who
showed his appreciation for curry and stated that Aldona was
noteworthy for its chilies.

Moira bananas are famous in Goa

Salvador Mascarenhas from Mudd'davaddi remarked that Goan
village Sangolda was known for its variety of beans. Pomburpa
was famous for its fountain, recalled Luis Domingo Dias from
Cotula. Duarte Fernandes from Donvaddo showed his inclination
towards Mapuça, well known throughout Goa for its weekly
Friday market. Adolph Mendonca from Cotula simply said that
Nerul was known for its groundnuts and sweet potatoes.

Alfred Fonseca, settled in Arrarim, striking his chest
proudly declared that his village Assagao was famous for its
flowers. Paulito Fernandes from Mudd'davaddi, with a smile on
his face, quipped that Calangute is noted for its beach.
Feliciano D'Souza from Arrarim, showing his love for Goan
village Candolim, remarked that it is famous in Goa for its
salted fish. Bernardo da Cunha from Mollembhat spoke about
Calvim and said it was known for its crabs. In one voice we
ended the list of village names with "Saligao amcho ganv,"
renowned in days gone by for sugarcane and belios (a type of
candy made from sugarcane juice).

But one among us had remained quiet so far. He was our choir
master Eustaquino D'Souza from Pequeno Morodd, who now added
that Pilerne and Goan village Arpora were famous in Goa for
salt and that without salt our staple food of rice and curry
would be tasteless.

As we carried on our discussions enthusiastically, a stately
gentleman whom none of us knew approached us. He said that he
was a ganvkar of Saligao belonging to the 9th vangodd and
that he had come to Saligao to register his name at the
Saligao Comunidade Ghor to collect zonn (dividend) and pay
his respects to the patroness of the Saligao church, Mãe de
Deus. We welcomed him among us as one of our elder ganv-bhav
(fellow villager).

Seeing that we were interested in the affairs of the Bardez
villages, Professor Eduardo de Sousa -- for that was his name
-- said that he would relate to us a couple of stories. We
sat in silence, eager to listen to what he had to say.

One of the first Hindus, the learned professor said, that
converted to Christianity in the sixteenth century, was from
our neighbouring village of Pilerne. His Hindu name was
Mangapa Sinai or Bhau Sinai. He was a Narcornim de Camara
Geral de Bardez (Notary of the Municipality of Bardez).

He came to Pilerne from Cortalim. He had come to Goa along
with his brother and uncle Balxa or Balkrishna Sinai from
northern India. Mangapa was baptised and given the name of
Pero Ribeiro by the Franciscan Observants (OFM) who were made
in charge of the Christianisation of the people of the
Province of Bardez. They began their evangelization from 1555
beginning from Verém.

Pero Ribeiro offered his stables for the horses of Adil Khan
to stay in Pilerne. He was also given the property
Pattambhatt or Pasambhatt. A rivulet at Pilerne is calle

Farewell Friend, Rev Fr Nascimento, you will be dearly missed.
He breathed his last at Holy Spirit Church Margao and the funeral will be
at Saligao on 9 January 2018. He was recuperating from his debilitating
illness and surgery and was confined to his room lately, hardly venturing
out. He seemed alright but was forgetting . I visited him on 29 December
and spent some time with him. He did recognise me advised me to write at
least 4 lines daily, whatever that meant, He was feeling tired , weak and
had a small bite of his morning break fast and was in a mood of resting I
guessed. He had an attendant, who was very affectionate, sympathetic
attending on him, groomed his hair put on his spectacle for my last photo
treating him with love and patience. The number of timely medicines
distributed i saw were too many. I did not realise the end so was so near
and promised to visit him soon., He was disturbed about the loss of his
room keys, which he rembered were handed over to someone. We were very
closely associated, when he was a chaplain at Sucaldem, Chinchinim
He will long be remembered, as he has painstakingly documented history of

priests details of Salcette. His publications were a self effort with his
meager resources , meant to fill a void .He expressed to me and has still
to recover the costs, yet he ventured into more publications out of sheer
interest and personal goal
His contributions remain invaluable documentations for the records of the
Diocese and the only type of specific information treasure available as

from many social organisations and his monumental work has been held in
high esteem.Nothing ever deterred him as he traveled widely, even abroad at
his own expenses to complete his passion. My past associations has hardly
any memories of his being a determined and consistent writer, a trait he

REMEMBERING MY TAI ON HER BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

By Aires Rodrigues

Today is Shaskikala’s Kakodkar’s birthday anniversary. In her death on
28th October
2016, Goa lost a great leader. Goa’s second Chief Minister, Shashikala
Kakodkar was known as ‘Tai’ to us all. She took over the reins of Goa on
August 12, 1973 following the death of her father, Goa’s first Chief
Minister, Dayanand Bandodkar. Shashikala Kakodkar had the distinction of
being India’s third lady Chief Minister, the first being Sucheta Kriplani
(Uttar Pradesh) and the second being Nandini Satpathy (Orissa). Shashikala
Kakodkar had a very firm grip over the administration unlike some of the
subsequent Chief Ministers. Goa’s Iron Lady she was.

As a friend of the family, Shashikala’s three sons Yatin, Sameer and Abhay
we played together as children. Shashikala’s three boys were brought up as
normal kids never ever pampered or allowed to play truant unlike most
children of today’s tribe of politicians. In spite of her busy schedule as
Chief Minister, whenever I was at her Porvorim residence at lunch time, she
made sure lunch was served at her hands.

In 1979 the student community proved to be a formidable force to be able to
challenge the then Government headed by Shashikala Kakodkar. It was the
kindling of student activism in Goa. It was our desire that the student
community in Goa should get 50% bus concession. The powerful bus owner's
lobby was being fully supported by the Shashikala Kakodkar Government. The
student agitation launched on 1st January swiftly spread from Pernem to
Polem and within 13 days the Shashikala Kakodkar Government decided to
graciously concede to the demand of the student community for 50% bus
concession.

During the same student agitation, on 7th Jan 1979 Shashikala Kakodkar was
being felicitated at Azad Maidan on her 44th birthday by a committee headed
by the late Mr. V.M Salgaoncar. As she was not conceding to our demand for
50 % bus concession we decided to demonstrate and disrupt her felicitation
function at Azad Maidan. We were successful and ended up with VM
Salgaoncar’s Mercedes car badly smashed in that chaotic evening. It was
just a coincidence that I later graduated in law from VM Salgaoncar’s
College.

Shashikala Kakodkar was definitely never vindictive. Though I was a very
close family friend of the Kakodkar family, Shashikala respected my right
to oppose some of her government’s policies and decisions. And for this I
respected and always held her in the highest esteem. She was more than a
"Tai" to me. She was always very concerned about my well being.

A true tribute to Shashikala Kakodkar would be for Politicians and people
in authority, by virtue of their positions to be ready for both bouquets
and brickbats. They should know that their lives and (mis)deeds are under
the public scanner and are more than likely to be exposed at some stage.
Freedom to fearlessly fight against social ills is the very hallmark of a
true democracy, but unfortunately some of those who ride to power on a
contrived electorate are unable to withstand such a scrutiny.

After being Chief Minister for 2084 days, Shashikala Kakodkar graciously
conducted herself even after being out of power. She at all times kept
herself abreast with issues concerning Goa. We should always remember the
enormous contribution of this great lady towards the development of Goa and
in particular the upliftment of the downtrodden Bahujan Samaj. My fond
memories of Shashikala Kakodkar will never ever fade away.

Buffalo meat is cheaper than pukka Beef. We used to get it in Saudi at the
local duka wallah, never saw it in the super marts.

It seems to me that the Goa Govt. has a vested interest to appease the RSS
and sympathisers in the name of cow protection. They turn a blind eye or go
soft on the vigilantes. We have reached a sad state of affairs. The powers
that be are the BJP. Their Party and followers come first to the detriment
of the State of Goa.

Dear all,
The last time herald had gone paid, I subscribed for one month with payments
done online, however next day the paper was free and I did not have to login in.

Now once again they have gone paid. I was trying to subscribe for 1 month

holidays and will be
going back to Saudi Arabia. after 20 days, can I make payments thru net banking
in india with Indian and address, and will I be able to login in once
I go back to Saudi?

Another thing the older online version was quite easier, but this one
seems to be different.
will we get more of Advertisements for the online version.

Hope someone replies.

Thanks

Subject: Re: GOANET : HERALD'S E-PAPER TO GO PAID

Dear Mr Dias,

Although you might have found it shocking to see that the e-paper of the
aforesaid newspaper has become paid, but that's now the norm everywhere.

Please remember that news giving is a commercial service while newspapers are
product. Every commercial product /service comes at a cost.

It costs Rs 20 to produce one copy of a newspaper which has more colour pages

[Goanet] END OF THE ROAD FOR GOEM, GOENKAR AND GOENKARPONN

2018-01-07 Thread Aires Rodrigues
In 2011 Manohar Parrikar as Leader of Opposition while addressing the Goa
Legislative had expressed his deep anguish witnessing Goa becoming a
concrete jungle. In a very emotional tone and tearful eyes he lamented that
high rise buildings were mushrooming all over. But it is the very same
Manohar Parrikar who after becoming Chief Minister in March 2012 has given
and is continuing to allow abundantly in rank violation of law even the
hills and fields to be usurped to make way for buildings all over without
even caring to have the basic infrastructure in place.

But all this comes as no surprise with Manohar Parrikar now well known as
the Master of all U-turns. If to grab the Chief Minister’s chair he stooped
so low to even embrace the wily Vijai Sardesai whom he had consistently
branded as a ‘dalal’, nothing should surprise us while Manohar Parrikar
will go down in history as being Goa’s worst Chief Minister. For all the
Fot, Foting and Fotingponn through politricks of deceit and deception.
