Re: [Goanet] Julio Ribeiro's point of view....

2018-06-02 Thread Eugene Correia
Just to point out, Julio missed his first option to be a Journalist, just
as his cousin or relative (I could be corrected on this).
Dom Moraes wrote fine piece on Julio in the now-defunct IMPRINT.
Julio would have been as good a journalist as he was a policeman.

[Goanet] BJP in a roller coaster ride

2018-06-02 Thread Nelson Lopes
BJP on a roller coaster ride

2014 was watershed moment for BJP from earlier 2 members in Parliament
.Immediately after that the BJP was battered in Delhi, decimated by new
party AAP ,in spite of heavily investing in central Ministers and money
power, in campaign. The slogans and speech diet by their P.M captivated and
mesmerized the masses with hopes and aspiration. Ache din, sab ke sath sab
ka vikas, corruption issue, demonetization made people bear short term
pain for long term gain of promise. As the years passed arrogance of BJP
was at its peak.People obliged the clarion call to forgo gas subsidy,
senior citizens rail concessions etc, but the MP`s wallowed in Parliament
canteen subsidy at 15 crores annually, Besides their perks, allowances and
tax free salaries termed as allowances hit the glass roof without bating
and eyelid even without a murmur of dissent. The Yoga bashing, toilets
under swach bharat grabbed the headlines. The BJP till now leans heavily
on oratory skill of P.M but it is playing the same broken record While
dynasty is the password Modi is indispensable for the fortunes of BJP with
RSS calling the shots. Our P.M is on glob tottering mission like no other
P.M in the past . The foreign meetings attracted the non residents in
drones, but not a single press conference is held in India. Man ki baat is
a soliloquy. Make in India made loud noises and so also Jan dhan accounts
lying dormant and dysfunctional only for rattling statistics .Then came
the lynching humans in the name of sacred cow, no women safety, no jobs
for youth have turned out to be myth and GST turned commerce and trade
upside down and residual effects are hard o the economy

There is turmoil all over India with hate and fear psychosis ruling the
roost. The return of awards and disillusionment among the educated,
scientists, intelligentsia. with the hate campaign, persecution of
minorities like never before for the past 7 decades. The recent reverses in
election results has been a wake up call for BJP and the rule in Karnataka
hit them on the head, though BJP wants to rationalize the event as of no
consequences

The rise of BJP is vertical, not horizontal and it has reached a plateau
and hence naturally downward decline proving the theory that what goes up
must come down .Even gold loses luster and shine with time and has to be re
polished. The rise of prices of daily commodities and petrol is
backbreaking and unreasonable .The voters have realized too soon that BJP
under the guise of Hidutwa has been fooling the majority sentiments and it
is not the alternative , the change they had envisioned in last elections.
The bad publicity generated by events in India has been fueling adverse
sentiments around the world and making India hang their heads in shame

India has miles to go before we sleep and raise our heads with pride and
call ourselves Indians. BJP has made India a place to be worried about
among the community of Nations

[Goanet] GOANET: NATURE'S MAGICAL HYPNOTIC SPELL

2018-06-02 Thread Stephen Dias
NATURE'S MAGICAL
HYPNOTIC SPELL

Elvidio Miranda

The shimmer and dazzle at dawn on the surface of water on a humid summer
casts a hypnotic spell that's magical as it is exuberant to the senses, in
the background chatter, chirping, twittering and warbling of our fancifully
plummaged winged avians, a myriad symphony of which nature itself is the
harmonic conductor, a cochlear rhapsody that fills up our senses and
mesmerises our inner being in its variety of auditory nuances, catching us
all in rapt attention, perplexing as well as embarking on a magical trip
that holds us spellbound. The morn thus unfolds as the rising sun in the
firmament begins to brighten with every luminous ray that lights up our
day, bringing us hope that darkness shall turn to pellucid brightness,
shape of better things to come cast by the aura of the morning star. Up on
the steep sides of the mountain bluff, the eagles take off from their
perch, soaring into the daylight weaving spectacular patterns signifying
the trinity of harmonic existence.
Flowers of a variety of hues, shapes and fragrances bloom every where
colouring the trees with a crown of glorious blossoms, a pleasant reminder
that nature is the towering and flowering abundance of gorgeous
inflorescence. The howling and the alternate lazy winds ruffle and caress
the senses into a sensuous stupor and calmness, urging us on as it whistles
past us. The oceans, seas, rivers and streams and rivulets flow serenely or
in swift rapid and falls in consonance with the tides and the phases of the
moon, while mirroring the myriad hues of the sky whether azure or green
tinged or greyish in colour. As dusk sets in in the western skies the sun
as it fades into the horizon lights up in warm orange and shades of grey as
calm sets in heralding the colouring of the night sky with the glittering
twinkle of the stars, and the phases of the moon from crescent, to half, to
gibbous to full moon. The calmness of the night lulls us into a state of
sublime sleep, only to awaken into a new dawn at the crack of the new day.
We come full circle of one day to the next as nature's cycle keeps chugging
on day after beautiful and rosy day. Nature never ceases to enrapture us
into the various moods that is the reflection of creation in its splendid
and mysterious setting.

[Goanet] A Tale of Two Archbishops from Aldona (Times of India, 2/6/2018)

2018-06-02 Thread V M
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/a-tale-of-two-archbishops-from-aldona/articleshow/64421448.cms

It sounds like the beginning of what might be quite a promising joke.
Three men from Aldona hit the national headlines at exactly the same
time. One is archbishop of New Delhi. Another is the archbishop of
Karachi. The third is the most celebrated “top cop”, octogenarian
Julio Ribeiro. But alas, there is no punch line for all of us to laugh
about. What has happened over the past few days is instead an object
lesson in the fast-converging majoritarian politics of the
subcontinent, now threatening to remake India into what Ribeiro – in
this very newspaper – aptly termed “a saffron Pakistan.”

The first man from Aldona was actually born in neighboring Pomburpa,
and attended the seminaries at Saligao and Rachol. Archbishop Anil
Couto emphasizes inter-religious dialogue. He is the Chairman of the
Conference of the Catholic Bishops of India (for Ecumenism). The
63-year-old triggered an unnecessary maelstrom of criticism and abuse
when he wrote to parishes under his jurisdiction recommending a
year-long prayer campaign to alleviate the current “turbulent
political atmosphere” which “poses a threat to the democratic
principles enshrined in our constitution and the secular fabric of the
nation.” The ruling party reacted stormily. BJP President Amit Shah
and home minister Rajnath Singh both responded with anger. The RSS
said the archbishops routine appeal was “direct interference of the
Vatican in the affairs of India.”

Cross over into Pakistan to Archbishop Joseph Coutts, who got the
inspiring news a few days ago that Pope Francis would make him a
Cardinal later this month. He was born in Amritsar before Partition,
and attended seminary in Karachi, where he has served with distinction
throughout much of his career. Soon after getting the good news from
Rome, Archbishop Coutts told a German newspaper, “Pakistan's
Christians are struggling to be recognized as equal citizens. The
country's founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, wanted religious minorities to
be treated as equal citizens. But some Muslims consider Christians
second class citizens. But in a modern democracy, it is not
acceptable.”

But whatever democracy might imply in theory is now being certainly
being sorely tested in reality in India and Pakistan, as the cases of
both these archbishops from Aldona have demonstrated on either side of
the border. Yet another son of the storied village in Goa (via his
mother), Julio Ribeiro put it succinctly and with much passion in his
“prayer for secularism” on May 28th. “I, for one, am preparing for the
Hindu rashtra!... I should be prepared for second class citizenship
that denies top jobs like that of a judge in the Supreme Court, a
governor of a state, the chief of defence staff or the intelligence
bureau. What I will not accept is being accused falsely of being
anti-national and pilloried on that count. If that happens this land
of mine will be nothing less than a saffron Pakistan!”

Organized religion and politics makes a toxic combination, which has
failed disastrously whenever mixed. In highly pluralistic nations like
India and Pakistan, any attempts in this regard have been a
straightforward recipe for suicide. This can already be seen across
the border, where militant extremism has mushroomed to an existential
threat. Now an exactly parallel phenomenon is burgeoning to dangerous
proportions in India, where a radical Hindu monk (who routinely speaks
in hateful terms about minorities) is already chief minister of the
largest and most populous state. Yogi Adityanath is often spoken of as
the natural successor to Narendra Modi.

Even here in relatively tension-free Goa, the cherubic Sadhvi
Saraswati was free to traipse in and out of the state while urging
Hindus to stockpile arms to “save our women from love jihad” and
recommending execution of those who eat beef. Is this already
indication the minority population of the state has become the
second-class citizens that Julio Ribeiro expects to be the rule? Let’s
not jump to hasty conclusions. As yet another great son (and
Archbishop) of Aldona, Goa’s own Felipe Neri Ferrao has said, “vested
interests” have tried “to provoke communal discord and promote
religious hatred.” But they have not succeeded yet.
