[Goanet] Surprise

2018-06-20 Thread Bernado Colaco
One is surprised to see that Correia did not see the 4th CR goal. Highest
scorer of the WC at the moment. Best European scorer surpassing Puskas. 4th Hat
trick in WC. Second highest country scorer behind Ali Daei(Iran). Currently
highest rating among 23 players participating in Russia 9.23. Fastest ball
movement recorded against Spain 41km/h.One of the best free kicks scored. Ball
dipping after soaring 8 feet over Ramos and Pique.
God bless WC and all the Goans taking part in this tournament.
Thank you

[Goanet] VIJAI BAB, YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW

2018-06-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Is it not an irony that the Vasco based rabid NGO which Town & Country
Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai had hired in November last year to strike
at me in that cocky Minister Vinod Paliencar episode is now hounding Vijai
himself.

Coming to the main issue at hand, the verbal conduct and the obscene sign
language used by Vijai Sardesai with that poor fisherwoman at the SGPDA
market in Margao is very unbecoming and unpardonable to say the least,
more so he being a Minister. And we having been promised Goem, Goenkar and
Goenkarponn, how on earth does Vijai Sardesai even dare think of
transforming Goa on the lines of Dubai? And in that video that has gone
viral who is that pimp so prominently attempting to intervene? Was he
imported from some other place outside Goa to the detriment of our Goenkars
and to shove aside our local Goans?

Vijai Sardesai should have in all humility expressed sincere regrets to
that fisherwoman and wound up the issue, instead of now frantically trying
to defend his very indefensible misconduct. In how a Minister should
courteously interact and deal with people, Vijai should learn a lesson or
two from former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat or former Minister Filipe
Neri Rodrigues.

Vijai Sardesai should realize that the current Power he is enjoying could
fuse off any moment with the BJP well known to spring a surprise in
backstabbing its allies. And with Vijai now back in the active company of
that notorious Durgadas Kamat who was sacked as OSD to the Fisheries
Minister on allegations of corruption, it may only hasten the scripting of
Town & Country Planning Minister’s political obituary.

These are Goa's street food superstars

How long can we talk about
Goa's food without talking
about its genuinely local digs?
Here are 7 'gaddos' that you
must check out for a truly Goan

"You don't need a silver fork to eat good food."
Chef Paul Prudhomme's words could be true of
anywhere in the world, but they're particularly
true of Goa. If our laidback 'susegado' is all you
have heard of, stroll into one of the villages and
hang out at the local 'gaddo' for some cutlet pao.
And then you will have a true flavour of Goa. Here
are seven Goan street food stars to check out on

Drive into Benaulim village and you will come upon a sign
that proclaims a dish so tasty, you must stop. "We serve
Goencho chauris pao, very tasty". As you'd expect, this
little gaddo, or street stall, is full of character and
quirks.

Caitan Tavares has named the stall after his daughter. On
most days, you will find him at the far end of the narrow
corridor, dressed in his shorts and football t-shirt, locked
in an animated conversation. He still has an eagle-eye on the
affairs though, and pays attention to every serving of his
famous Goan chourico pao, or Goa sausage bread, as it is
locally known. The poi itself is specially baked for his
stall by Sanjay, the village baker, who has been delivering
it at 6.30am every day for the last 24 years. Between Caitan
and his son Lavinton, they run Valanka Fast Food from dawn to
9.30pm at night.

Assured of a steady stream of diners, Caitan now moonlights

As the sun sets beyond the Mandovi rover, the streets around
Garcia de Orta, the municipal garden in the heart of the

Harley Davidson to the stream of Beemers and Mercs, Sandeep

himself is busy on the tava and cash counter, dishing out his
famous 'ros omelette'.

For the uninitiated, the ros omelette is a popular street
treat in Goa, quite similar to what a misal pav is to Pune,
or chhole kulche is to Delhi. 'Ros' is Konkani for gravy and
this dish is a good wholesome meal, made from chicken or
mutton gravy -- mostly xacutti masala served with omelette,
onion, lime and pao. This ubiquitous street food snack is
found across many gaddos, though there is something about
Sandeep Gaddo pulls people from far and wide. A hearty
serving of chicken or mutton gravy is served with omelettes
or, in some cases, an egg sunny side up. It's topped with
onion, a cut lime and some pao, and is bound to leave you
with a smile on your face.

croquets--minced beef coated in beaten eggs and
bread crumbs, deep fried; and fish cutlets made
from mackerel infused with popular Goan vinegar.
Try this scrumptious and tangy treat, with with a
bread-and-cheese option or simply savour them

food items from their particularly fine and spicy
Goan-sausage burger to the chicken cafereal, a
spicy grill-rubbed chicken. The secret sauce here

[Goanet] PANDURANG MADKAIKAR’S ONE BUNGALOW BUT MANY QUESTIONS

2018-06-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The authorities will be summoning the Architect, Engineer and also the
Contractor to ascertain their estimates on the total expenditure incurred
on that palacial bungalow recently built by Power Minister Pandurang
Madkaikar within the prohibited area of the Protected Monument of Basilica
of Bom Jesus at Old Goa which houses the relics of St Francis Xavier.

On 14th January 2013 before that bungalow was constructed Pandurang
Madkaikar’s engineer had in his letter to the Old Goa Panchayat estimated
the construction cost of the bungalow at Rs 1, 42, 46,485.

But the massive bungalow which has been built surrounded by a sprawling
landscaped area and which was inaugurated on 1st April this year is alleged
to have cost around a whopping 200 crores, making it perhaps Goa’s most
expensive abode. In his Income-tax returns for the financial year
2015-16, Pandurang
Madkaikar had shown his total income for the year as a mere Rs 1, 44,389
and that of his wife Janita, a paltry sum of Rs 24,389.

The bungalow built on a plot admeasuring 15252.50 sq mt has a total built
up area of 1000.60 sq mts which includes 539.10 sq mts on the Ground floor
and 461.52 sq mts on the First Floor besides a total of 152.24 of balcony
space and a terrace of 41.42sq mts on the first floor with a 30sq mt car
porch on the ground floor.

On the ground floor with a Court yard at the centre, the bungalow has a
Lobby, a Hall, Guest bedroom, Store room, Puja Room, Pantry room, Dining
Room, Living Room and Music cum TV room besides two Toilets.

The first floor comprises of a Master Bedroom, three Bedrooms, Kitchen,
Dining Room and a Living room besides two Toilets

The bungalow which has been fitted with State of the Art imported fixtures
and fittings also has an Elevator besides a staircase area of 43.20 sq mts.

Various authorities are now probing the illegality of the bungalow’s
compound wall and Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar’s disproportionate
assets. But with Pandurang Madkaikar hospitalized in Mumbai over the last
fortnight, in his absence wife Janita who is the Sarpanch of Old Goa will
have to do the explanation as she is the Managing Director of Nititasha
Realtors Pvt Ltd, the company owned by Pandurang Madkaikar and in whose
name that bungalow stands.

Re: [Goanet] Escape from Planet Plastic (Times of India, 19/6/2018)

2018-06-20 Thread Mervyn Lobo
VM,What really, really bugs me is that every time I go to Mupusa, I see cows
sitting in the fields chewing/trying to munch plastic bags. It is bad enough
watching when you know exactly what is going to happen to the cow.
It is mind boggling to watch the same in a country where the cow is considered
sacred.
MervynBTW, I always open the stomach of the larger fish I catch. One often
finds undigested food, like crawfish, which can be used again and/or gives a
good indication of what bait to use in the future. More often than not, I find
plastic beads or parts of a child’s toy. I once found a chip for a casino - but
that is a story for another day.

The monsoon churns the Arabian Sea off Goa, and what comes up is
mostly plastic. The anglers who return hopefully to Miramar beach
every evening cast their lines with great optimism, but the majority
of “bites” are just the same old plastic. Look further up to the high
tide line, it’s almost all plastic, which is also heaped in piles just
behind the sand dunes. It’s the same story riverside, and in the
majority of paddy fields, and even strewn all about at the bottom of
the ocean amidst the last surviving coral reefs in places like Grande
Island. This isn’t just a problem for India’s smallest state, however.
According to a most alarming report released at the World Economic
Forum, by 2025 there will be one ton of plastics in the ocean for
every three tons of fish, and by 2050 marine life will be outweighed
altogether.

This is a complicated issue. In many ways, our modern world is
directly built on the gains of the polymer revolution. These synthetic
molecular chains – the building block of all plastics – have enabled
mankind to previously unimaginable achievements. Think of spacecraft,
artificial limbs, 3-D printing and life-saving transmission of
pharmaceuticals. None of these could have happened without the
explosion in plastics innovation after World War II (which was itself
won partly because of crucial Allied advances in polymer technology.
Thus, the problem is not in use, but rather in disposal. Miraculously
durable in application, these products are hazardously durable in
waste. They can easily last centuries. Generations of humankind arrive
and disappear from the planet. Plastic doesn’t go anywhere.

The scale of the problem is almost beyond comprehension. Since the
1960’s global polymer-based production has multiplied twentyfold to
nearly 400 million metric tonnes per annum. In the next 20 years, that
massive volume is scheduled to double again, and quadruple by 2050.
The first-ever global analysis of all plastics ever made (published in
the peer-reviewed Science Advances) found that only 12 percent of that
accumulated production has ever been incinerated (which carries its
own immense environmental costs). A further 9 percent has been
recycled (which is prohibitively costly). A mind-boggling 79 percent
is left with us as permanent waste. That is at least 6.3 billion
metric tonnes of plastic sitting in immense landfills, and choking our
ocean life, and quite rapidly making the entire planet toxic.

It is an unlikely prospect that humanity could ever be entirely weaned
away from this cheap and convenient menace. But one quick fix does
exist, which many countries are racing each other to implement. This
is the reduction – and eventual ban – of the worst offending
single-use products, which make up as much as 50% of global plastics
production, including at least 4 trillion bags and 500 billion cups
per annum. Another eye-popping statistic with great relevance to Goa
is the number of plastic bottles sold worldwide, now well over one
million for every minute of every day. This is beyond unsustainable.
It is an existential crisis

That urgency is recognized in over 60 countries, according to a new
report issued by the United Nations Environment (UNEP) earlier this
month. Its chief administrator, Erik Solheim said, “A growing number
of governments are taking action and demonstrating that all nations,
whether rich or poor, can become global environmental leaders. He
singled out Rwanda, “a pioneer in banning single-use plastic bags”
which “is now one of the cleanest nations on earth.” Unfortunately,
India is at the other end of the spectrum. While pointing out some
limited success in states like Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh, Solheim
said elsewhere in the country he saw “some of the most beautiful
scenic places, but destroyed by plastic pollution.”

That grim fate already grips Goa, so gorgeously pristine just a couple
of decades ago, now teetering on the brink after abject failure of
governance for an entire generation. Every election year there are
grand promises made to tackle the garbage problem, and then the
problem only gets worse. Plastics bans have been enacted and
re-enacted

[Goanet] STUDENT ACTIVISM IN GOA NEEDS TO BE REKINDLED

2018-06-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Student activism encompasses the participation and involvement of students
in issues dealing with economic, environmental, political and social change
on and off the campus.

Having been closely associated with the very vibrant student movements in
Goa witnessed in the 70’s and 80’s, it is extremely anguishing and very
disheartening that the student activism today is virtually nonexistent in
the State. In our days students were known for having strong opinions and
expressing them without fear. We demonstrated to the then governments that
student power was a force to reckon with.

Maybe, it is now time that the students in Goa find their voice once again.
Today the social media is a very handy tool to expand the scope and
strength of student activism. Students need to be the voice of the
voiceless and through a well organized networked Student activism must
strive for restoration of democratic values and justice.

With Goa currently in dire straits soaked in rampant corruption and bad
Governance, the Student Community could cause a political, environmental,
economic and much needed social change that Goa so desperately requires.
