Re: [Goanet] A Pension From Bardroy.

2018-07-22 Thread Eugene Correia
I don't swallow this argument. Bardroy made money on the movie, and Lornna
perhaps didn't get a pie from it. I find it ridiculous to read that Lorna gets
gigs because Bardroy made her famous. Maybe, the movie is NOT a total biopic
on her, but involves her and Chris. IF I understand
correctly, Lorna has been rewarded by Bardroy and, hence, makes more money than
her usual fame would have brought in. The argument cuts both ways. If it wasn't
for the movie, perhaps GOA would have not invited her nor would she have
invited elsewhere to sing. In the non-traditional sense, Lorna is perversely
earning a pension. Those who want to swallow this argument, please do so. As
for me, It makes me go to sleep. Good night.

Re: [Goanet] TOP 10 REASONS WHY IMMIGRANTS LEAVE CANADA | CANADIAN DREAM

2018-07-22 Thread George Pinto
The video applies to immigrants to many other countries too. Some of the
ingredients to success (although this is not a guarantee to success) and in no
particular order:
1. Learn the local customs, meet the locals and get involved in the larger
community which opens up opportunities.
2. Work hard. Develop marketable skills and constantly update one's skills.
3. Have a life plan, a financials plan, a health plan. Then have a back-up plan
for each.
4. Take some risks.
5. Dream big but set realistic expectations, it is possible to balance the two.
6. Keep social media/computer stuff/TV to a minimum as it contracts the mind.
Instead do outdoor stuff which broadens the mind (this applies everywhere, not
just to immigrants).

Smile - life is short and unpredictable.

Re: [Goanet] Lorna at the BMX picnic Toronto

2018-07-22 Thread Eugene Correia
As far as I know, Lorna was labeled a "legend" before the movie, Nach Kumpasar,
was madeby Bardoy. In fact, the film-maker cashed on her status. Though Bardoy
maintained the film was a tribute to Goan musicians, he had fooled no one. I
believe Lorna withdrew her approval, and Bardoy was left with no option but to
come up with such concoction.
Lorna was popular with all classes of people who love and spoke Konkani. The
new generation og Goans swing to her songs as well as sing them at parties.
Hernumbers are still sung by crooners, both male and female, at Goan weddings
in Goa.
It's sad that she lost 23 years because of her break-up with Chris. I had
occassion to pick up a fight with Chris Perry in Dubai. After agreeing to
perform one last time with Lorna in Toronto, he came up later with a condition
that he would oerform if only Lorna gives an open apology.
I said it's unfair of him for demanding an apology, for The fault lsy eith both
of them for their break-up. Kniwing hiw adamant Chris is, he refused my offer.
Shocked to read that Lorna is living on a pension, courtesy Bardroy. Such a
low-blow against a singer who continues to thrall loving-speaking Goans like
myself even with her "croaky voice". CYeah, she has passed her prime but she's
still a crowd-puller everywhere konkani-loving Goans (yeah, Swindon-type) are
present and willing to go distances to hear her.
In fact, I had received an email from someone saying she was at the pivnic and
Lorna and her sister, Clementine, were there. Her other sister, Jean, my
classmate, was a singing while still in school for a jazz band at Venice. I
think she sang for the famous Johnny Rodrigues and his band. I was told she's
in Austria.

[Goanet] Romancing Portuguese Goa (Claudia by Sophia Lorena Benjamin)

Romancing Portuguese Goa

There is much that is good about Sophia Lorena Benjamin’s debut novel,
Claudia, a historical romance set Goa.

Published: 22nd July 2018 05:00 AM

By Madhavi S Mahadevan
Express News Service

There is much that is good about Sophia Lorena Benjamin’s debut novel,
Claudia, a historical romance set Goa. The early 1960s was a critical
chapter in history: the Indian government was trying to liberate Goa from
colonial rule. Bridges were being blasted, the airport had been bombarded,
there was an economic blockade and Goans were cut off from the outside
world. Finally, on December 19, 1961, the Indian Army marched into the
enclave and ended four-and-a-half centuries of Portuguese Raj.

This is the backdrop for the romance that develops between Claudia, a
servant girl who works for a wealthy Portuguese couple, and Damiano, the
scion of the family. Claudia lives in the picturesque village of Oroshim.
‘Winding pathways and rich hues of red mud laced the suburban lanes where
bougainvillea and hibiscus flowers bloomed wild.’ Her family has fallen
into bad times. The father is an alcoholic, the two older sisters have
ruined their reputation by their pre-marital liaisons. Claudia’s
grandmother is hopeful that she will marry well and retrieve the family
name.

The narrative constantly weaves in details of rural life. This is the
landscape of cashew trees, rice paddies, coconut groves, beaches, fishing
boats, the fish market, the liquor bars with ‘curious sounding Portuguese
names: Casa de Antok, Caravela, Rosa Tavern, Sol e Pesca…. The bars
provided a welcome abode for the rain-drenched, hardworking, cold and wet
men to huddle together and indulge in moments of unhindered, simple luxury’.

The surplus of ethnographic information brings atmosphere to the novel, but
it also thins the storyline to vanishing point. While Claudia is a fairly
well-developed protagonist, her lover Damiano remains a cardboard cut-out.
Apart from giving her subtle smiles and slipping notes about pre-dawn
assignations in haystacks, he does not play a role, probably because this
is not a serious affair anyway.

Meanwhile, time is a ticking bomb for the Portuguese. A return to Portugal
is clearly on the cards and Damiano’s folks too lock up their mansion and
leave. Claudia, who has nowhere to go, is engaged to Piedad Ferrao,
regarded as a ‘catch’. At the very last minute, Damiano turns up and asks
her to run away with him to Portugal where they can be together, but with
the caveat that she will have to be a servant to his family, just like
before.

What does Claudia choose? With a richness of historical detail, the novel
has something in it, but an underdeveloped plot and abysmal editing ensures
that it does not quite deliver on its promise.

2018-07-22 Thread Roland Francis
The BMX is an alumni association of Britto’s and Mary’s Schools and St Xavier’s
College, all in the Mapusa area of Goa.

A good proportion of the students in these institutions were from Mapusa and
surrounding villages. Most of them resettled overseas, East Africa and then
beyond. Aldona and Saligao were major feeders to these schools.

Their annual picnic was well organized and moderately attended. Live music was
provided by “Liquid Blue”.

When it is a Saturday, the sun mild and the breezes cool, with music wafting
from the centre of the field and a stream babbling all around the spot, with
Konkani and Portuguese songs interspersed with well-arranged music there's
little more you can ask. Colin D’Cruz was mentioned. Don’t know if he was part
of the band.

As soon as Lorna’s presence with her red head or henna-dyed coiff was
mentioned, many stood to get a glance at her with a buzz heard around the
grounds. She didn’t sing, just came as a teaser to her performance at next
Saturday’s Viva Goa at the very same venue.

FN was right about her general popularity. I thought she was big only among the
Swindon-type - no, I’m not being prude, but it seems she is still a hit among
others too, croaky voice or not. With the recent movie about her life having
almost made her a legend coupled with the sympathy of a career controlled by
someone she loved and the memory of her poignant songs sung in a much younger
and romantic avatar, it seems her persona has overwhelmed her present ability
to sing. Good for you Lorna! A pension from Bardroy Britto.

[Goanet] india's political history

2018-07-22 Thread Eugene Correia
I am learning India's political history from GOANET. If I am not mistaken, Goa
was a coly of Portugal. It didn't matter if Goa was declared as "Estado da
India", to an attempt to legitimize its claim over Goa.
People with pro-Portuguese feelings say Goa was "grabbed", "stolen" "illegally
invaded" while some want Goa to be an independent country.
Tibet was not a colony of China though it could have been part of mainland
China more than 800 years ago. In more sense than one, Tibet was culturally
linked to India.
The northeast part of India is a different case. China even demands Arunchal
Pradesh on the same ground it took over Tibet. Tibetians want their own
country and the FREE TIBET movement wants to achieve that goal.
The two other colonial powers in India, Britain and France, left India in their
own ways. The British played a sinister role in splitting the nation into two,
while France gave away Pondicherry (now Puducherry) in akund gesture.
If Portugal had done the same, it would have benn a honourable departure for
Portugal. Or, it should have gone away with a condition that Goa would be an
independent country. Portugal paid a price for its obtinancy.

The CBCI bas already issued a press statement and it's a restrained one, both

i have seen reasoned and passionate arguments by the regular TV panellist, John

Surely the voters may try and let's say and not succeed. What then? That

You are one of the sharpest ones who post on Goanet, and one who has a
wider perspective. You have an acumen that many respect. The others
vanished after tackling, or rather assiduously/even viciously debating
every issue related to logic or whatever. Things are relatively quiet and
your posts are appreciated in the mind, and on occasion here.

I sometimes wonder whether there are many dropping to cancer, and so
holding their peace! And I say this since I am nursing my own with advanced

Besides of course having lost many.

I sincerely doubt whether many read Goanet, but still, you could be a voice

Answer.
Completely wrong.
Scarborough is Peking, Jaffna and Olde England.
It is Mississauga that is mini-Dhobitalao, Zagreb-Bucharest-Warsaw all rolled
in one and now increasingly Karachi and Lahore.

[Goanet] Is China Encircling India?

2018-07-22 Thread Roland Francis
Pakistan has long been in the Chinese fold. Because of its traditional enmity
with India, Pakistan is completely beholden to China.

Kashmir is a thorn in India’s side. India has not played its cards right with
the Kashmiri people while Pakistan has made all the right noises, not the least
of which is dealing from the religious deck. China supplies arms to Kashmiris
via Pakistan.

Tibet grabbed by China in the manner and on the same grounds as India grabbed
Goa, is the direct point of Chinese incursions into India’s border areas.

The North Eastern States have always felt left out from the Indian mainstream
although India has tried its best to integrate it. The culture is more Chinese
and Western than Indian and the Christian religion brought in by British
Missionaries which dominates the tribes that populate these states accentuates
their difference.

Bangladesh one would think would be eternally grateful to India for having
separated it from former Pakistan, but this is hardly the case. One of the two
strong women of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia is completely at loggerheads with India.
Power keeps swinging between the two women. These is always tension with
Bangladeshis illegally immigrating into India to escape poverty and being
sympathetically treated and ultimately absorbed into India’s Muslim population.
Bangladesh being too poor to buy its own arms, fully supplies its armed forces
with willingly donated Chinese materiel from tanks to ships to aircraft.

China’s predatory economic policies are its best tools to dominate Nepal, Sri
Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives. China refers to these countries as its String of
Pearls. Sri Lanka specially is being targeted with the latest news that a
no-condition gift of $275 million dollars has been given to the President to
use on any development he wishes.

India has the friendship of the United States to counter China. However this is
a fickle friendship at best and at worse a farce, as under Trump.

[Goanet] So called "governments"

2018-07-22 Thread George Pinto
Governments today in India, Goa, USA, and much of the rest of the world are
merely the marketing/legal arm of corporates. They do the bidding of the rich
as the expense of the poor. In India, there is little difference between the
two major national "parties", their scams/corruption serve the same masters who
they work for. Yes, one is more communal than the other but that is a
vote-getting strategy to get elected (i.e. who will get to pass laws to rob the
national treasury for their rich owners).

When one breaks down GDP growth of 6%, it translates to the rich got richer by
15% offset by the people getting poorer by 9%. This is modern-day economics in
India, USA, China, etc.

Who naively believes governments exist anymore for the people, by the people?
Not even revolution will save the people because the revolution will be
stage-managed by the corporates and the people wrongly believe they have a vote
and a say in everyday governance. The illusion of democracy is a one of the
great con-jobs of the last century. The only way to measure true democracy is
if income-gaps close, which means everyone is getting equal opportunity in
society. Right now the deck is stacked against the people, which explains the
lop-sided income outcomes throughout the world - the rich are getting richer,
the poor are getting poorer.

Have a nice day.

George

[Goanet] PARLIAMENT NO CONFIDENCE MOTION

2018-07-22 Thread John Eric Gomes
FAILURE OF THE OPPOSITION
If you are pointing a gun, there must be bullets in it and be capable of
hitting the target! The Opposition blew a good chance to knock the BJP on the
mat if they had coordinated and done their homework backed by facts and
figures, forcing a factual rebuttal! This was essential before taking on the
well oiled organized and propaganda machine with an accomplished orator
speaking last! The Modi embrace and wink was a good out of the box
psycological gesture on someone who keeps hugging the likes of Trump, Xi etc.
Love and humility are good exhibitions to counter hate and intolerence. But
general accusations like tall promises fulfilling none and the Rafael deal blew
up in Rahul's face! The other parties generally concentrated on their own State
problems, so the PM could easily win the vote and get away with ridiculing,
answering that women's safety was a state law and order problem and entirely
skipping the main issues like Hindutva, lynchings, NPAs, governance issues like
pollution, flooding and loss of jobs and hundred other serious issues that
could have been brought up like AI sale and with the Supreme Court scathing
comments on lynching and a huge farmer's dharna just close outside having
absolutely been ignored! The figures the BJP crunches out do not reflect the
inflation, high prices in the market and resultant quality of living of the
masses suffering! International rating agencies generally relying on
governmentn figures naturally print a rosy picture. Amazingly the PM and
government spokespersons constantly and repeatedly keep accusing the
opposition of arrogance, communalization, polarization etc, exactly what they
have achieved and are exhibitng.

[Goanet] No Higher Than A Coconut Tree!

2018-07-22 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
With the Regional and CRZ Plans for Goa going to be the eye of the
storm in the coming Assembly session, now is the time for brave and
genuine Goemkars to show their true identity and publicly proclaim
their love for their state and home of their birth.

As our villages is where the majority of Goans live and where their
heart is, it is now a historic moment in our history; we need to
declare that the height of a house should be no higher than a coconut
tree. Some countries have done so, and the question is, can we act as
enlightened as them?

Goemkarponn has to be more than a mantra which puts us into a state of
sleepiness. It should wake us up and not the contrary, as is often the
case with too much booze when we fall asleep, mentally. Our leaders,
and especially the Goa Forward Party who swears by Goemkarponn will no
doubt take the lead by taking us forward in the right direction.

Big buildings are okay within the city limits, but never in heritage
areas, anywhere in Goa. I'm sure the soldiers of Goan identity would
rather die than betray Goan identity, values, and culture. Please
don't prove me wrong. Otherwise, the people will have a feeling of
betrayal and your future will be darker than a rainy monsoon night in
July.

Some politicians - meaning most - are full of themselves and in Goa
presently a sad picture emerges of them as they cling desperately on
to power even while in very poor health. Is power so intoxicating?
I've never been interested in politics nor power, and have no idea at
all. Henry Kissinger - a US Secretary of State - someone who should
know, once said power is the greatest aphrodisiac! So, is this as good
as it gets?

No politician's head should be allowed to get bigger than a coconut
nor higher than a coconut tree or otherwise he will get ill and suffer
from mental and heart disease. His unhealthy heart will no longer
beat for Goa and Goans and their welfare and, like Scrooge the miser,
will not be able to enjoy anything more than counting his ill-gotten
money all night.

Maybe, not always money but fish. What are we going to do about this problem?

A lot is going on in the media about the new IT start-ups most of
which is positive although there is a part which is a mystery: Why are
we starting up so late? Decades after Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune?
It is embarrassing, as everyone is wondering about it. And, can we
reverse the brain drain at this point? Let's wait and see, and wish
this venture well. Let's think positive even if we fail.

Why don't we do with fish, fruit and vegetables what we are doing in
the IT sector? Encourage Goans to get into these industries in Goa by
banning fish, fruit and vegetables from outside Goa. Fish and other
perishables coming from outside Goa has to have preservatives to
increase the shelf life. With regard to fish, other states which are
not on the coasts maybe have to live with it; we do not as the sea is
a part of our border, a long coastline which is inextricably a part of
our lives. It is certain the outsiders have used formalin to preserve
the fish (even within so-called limits.) It is, of course,
internationally banned; when you buy the fish, you get more than you
bargained for, you get cancer!

We can be compassionate enough not to ask that the perpetrators go to
jail which they should but in no way should fish from outside be
allowed to be sold in Goa in future. If we do then we might as well be
brain dead. Why give them another chance when what they have been
doing is bad for the health of the people who live in Goa? Is our
government listening? Fruit sellers are also using chemicals to ripen
fruit and they should also have to pay the price. Stop the fruit from
outside Goa from entering the state. We need to recognize the danger;
the fruit sellers are as or more dangerous than Muthalitk.

Government can ban immediately fish and fruit from outside the state
and start encouraging famers and fishermen in these two sectors, as we
are doing with IT. Add vegetables, and give a boost to agriculture.

Give the FDA independent authority so they can defend themselves from
the grubby fingers of politicians. The crux of the problem is this:
the further the source of food from where it is eaten, the greater is
the danger to health, as is obvious in the case of fish. A good profit
demands the use of strong and deadly chemicals.

Ban fish from Goa from entering the state as well as the export of
Goan fish. The health of the people of Goa has to be the top priority.
Not foreign exchange nor the support of people from outside the state
at the cost of the health of Goans. Our Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar who was Defense Minister resigned and returned to Goa as he
missed his fish. He asks if Goans can live without fish?

As Goa is a coastal state, what is the need to import fish from
outside the state? Give jobs to Goans and allow them to make a decent
livelihood. No need to buy fish from outside the state, fruit or
vegetables. Now, isn't this
