[Goanet] VOTERS OF PANAJI WILL ENSURE THAT SUBHASH VELINGKAR IS THE MAN OF THE MATCH

2019-05-14 Thread Aires Rodrigues
With everyone so overwhelmed that the much respected Subhash Velingkar is
contesting to be the next MLA of Panaji, I was yesterday very distraught
and actually extremely disgusted on being told by two very good friends
that they were anguished that being a Catholic, I have supported Subhash
Velingkar.

I so patiently reminded and explained to this duo, that I have grown up in
Ribandar through the years in the warmest company of a multitude of friends
hailing from all creeds, communities and castes.

We are all on a short voyage in this world, the end of which we know not.
So let us live and cherish every day we have caring and loving for the
entire community at large.

Infact my one and only great treasure and wealth today is those thousands
of friends from all castes and creeds across Goa, around India and all over
the world, and their warm friendship I always cherish.

Though being a devout Catholic, I have always firmly believed that Temples,
Mosques and the Churches besides other places of worship should be our
focal points to unite diverse communities instead of creating rifts amongst
us. We are all children of the one loving and tolerant God.

Regardless, this election is not about personalities or religious
differences. It is much more than that! It is a golden opportunity to
rectify the decades of wilful neglect and stagnation of our city by
choosing competence, honesty, dedication, experience and selfless
determination above all else.

Having known Subhash Velingkar over the last four decades and what a very
refined gentleman that he has been, I can confidently vouch that our now
sinking City of Panaji and Goa will be very safe and sound under the
stewardship of 19th May’s Man of the Match Subhash Velingkar someone who
has never been communal or corrupt.

On 19th May, the choice for the best candidate could not be any simpler or
easier having to choose between a very corrupt Sidharth Kuncalienker, an
awfully criminally tainted Babush Monseratte and a very young handsome but
politically grossly immature Valmiki Naik, Panaji’s only hope is the very
knowledgeable and articulate Subhash Velingkar who through his Mr. Clean
credentials has established and proven beyond doubt his impeccable
credibility and unblemished character. Subhash comes with no adverse
baggage and will hit the ground running as Panaji’s problems need a rapid
response and urgent action to rescue and save our once great capital.
Cometh the hour cometh the man!

Let Panaji now decide putting aside petty differences and self-interests,
blind allegiance to party or individual and voting for competence, positive
action and integrity as characterized by Subhash Velingkar.

[Goanet] The Problems of Panjim Or Is It Panaji?

2019-05-14 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Goa's capitol city will go to the polls soon, with the future of one
of India's finest cities at a historical crossroads, and hanging in
the balance.

Whoever wins the seat will have to grapple with problems, and arrive
at solutions.

Is the city a prestigious seat, and the winning representative a man of power?

The late Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar held this legislative seat
for perhaps a couple of decades.

He was an IIT graduate who won the seat again and again.

Are we looking at highly educated voters in this constituency?

I'm no expert but beyond the sophisticated voter who lives an affluent
life in the city, there is also the poor and illiterate voter who
lives in slums.

Can the people who want to win the seat be able to appeal and convince
both kinds of voters the value of their manifesto?

Manohar Parrikar won the seat again and again.

Can the people who stand for elections be able to explain successfully
to the affluent and the poor the problems and proposed solutions - to
the highly educated and illiterate voters of this sophisticated city?

Will the unschooled and illiterate understand or even be interested in
the big picture?

The priorities of the poor are completely different from issues which
plague affluent people.

Will they ignore the big picture, and ask for the basics?

Problem: The city has 30,000 cars coming and going during the day
which causes a lot of pollution. How will this problem be solved? A
multi-storied building of a 1000 cars is one proposal.

Not a bad idea, not a bad idea at all if built outside the city or
only in an area where there are other tall buildings.

If outside the city, how do people come into town? A new transport system?

As the city has an old world charm it will be a challenge indeed.

Tall concrete buildings cannot come up amidst a heritage site or even
the old world charm of traditional buildings .

The traditional look of the city cannot be destroyed as it means the
destruction of the city, aesthetically and financially.

Tourists will cease to find the city interesting and stay away.

Problem: The casinos can, and will be moved some say, but the problem
is more to do with sewage than the casinos on the Mandovi River. Is
the casino lobby listening?

The river pollution problem is also to do with sewage released into
the river from sources other than casinos.

Now, this involves a huge investment for the government, and maybe is
beyond the scope of the Goa government.

The people of Panjim or Panaji know their problems better than I do.

It is time for the candidates to discuss and debate on TV the various
problems, issues, and solutions.

The voters are waiting for a televised debate. As the city is the most
educated constituency in Goa, let's hear it!

[Goanet] From Calangute to California to Cannes

2019-05-14 Thread George Pinto
PRESS RELEASE -

>From Calangute to California to Cannes
Goa Sudharop's journey continues

Since its inception in 2001, Goa Sudharop, a non-profit based in California and
working for the betterment of Goa and Goans, has had many successes which we
have humbly achieved through the support of our donors, volunteers, and
well-wishers.

On May 18, 2019, history will be made with another significant landmark
achievement. Goa Sudharop and internationally renowned fashion designer Verma
D'Mello have been selected by the Cannes Film and Fashion Festival to showcase
their joint THREAD UP project in the highly acclaimed annual fashion show which
includes Hollywood stars and other celebrities. The THREAD UP project helps and
empowers low-income indigenous Goan women by providing them job-skills which
helps them earn an income and economic independence, see information on the
THREAD UP project at https://www.goasudharop.net/thread-up  During the fashion
show, international models will walk the runway wearing Verma's dresses and all
proceeds from the sale of the dresses will be donated to the THREAD UP project.

Verma D'Mello is based in Goa and passionately works to help low-income women
and girls. On the eve of her departure from Goa to Cannes, Verma said "our
rural Goan women possess great strength and spiritual powers of healing,
replenishment, rejuvenation, revitalization.  But when I encountered them in
remote villages in Goa, I saw their lack of skills for even a basic livelihood,
I was touched by how they are in need of recovery from a deteriorating life
cycle of neglect. This realization led me to enter into a partnership with Goa
Sudharop to teach them skills and transform them into the jewels of beauty they
should be".

Goa Sudharop would like to thank all the donors of the THREAD UP project. Goa
Sudharop would also like to thank our Treasurer and Board Member Shilla Almeida
and volunteers Harriet Ferens, Kimberly Gilbert, and Brendan Albuquerque who
are travelling to Cannes at their own personal expense to help Verma and her
team with the event.

[Goanet] American Games

2019-05-14 Thread Roland Francis
US sanctions are turning out to be a damp squib - less and less menacing.

There are already chinks in the armour. The EU is chafing at the bit and Russia
and China are definitely not accepting American leadership.

Trump is in a world of his own. He is like a small boy who is in charge of
lethal toys and thinks he can bend everyone to do his will. He is close to
learning he cannot. Threatening harm to Iran will get him no support except
from Saudi Arabia and the like who totally depend on the US and Israel who has
few other friends. Both the latter also being sworn enemies of the Persian
Empire.

India has to play with the hares and run with the hounds. In other words a
double game. It is increasingly becoming economically dependent on Uncle Sam’s
largesse as well as reaping huge benefits from buying Iranian oil at prices
substantially below market.

Trump can bellow all he wants and create situations where he can blame Iran to
provoke them into a physical confrontation all he wants, but Vietnam (Domino
Effect), Iraq (Weapons of Mass Destruction) and North Korea ( Missiles aimed at
Alaska) games cannot be repeated too often. The world is not as stupid as he
is, to think that holes blown in the sides of 4 ships (probably by American
Seals) will get enough support to attack Iran.

Re: [Goanet] How Pakistanis today see the 10 'blunders' their country made....

2019-05-14 Thread Roland Francis
A very incisive and intelligent assessment of the blunders that Pakistan made
that led to its situation today.

However this expert analysis of Nijam Sethi (a journalist and Cricket Board
administrator) was recorded in 2011.

Would be even more interesting if it were contemporary.

2019-05-14 Thread Nelson Lopes

After the break up of MGP , Sudin Davlikar seemed to have lost the high
pedestal of bargaining position
He was cut to size in an unprecedented mid night coup that left the MGP bruised
and mauled
The Goans at large have not much of sympathy for him as he is a known selfish
man and tank opportunist He is now left to luck his wounds of arrogance
GFP got a mild tremor of impending earthquake The party maintained a low
profile since elections recently
The members have left on a foreign tour fearing poaching of MLA,S
Monserat had jumped the ship on high waters to embrace Congress and fight
against BJP at Panjim and mildly jolted the GFP citadel
The BJP is on record that two MLA,S are waiting in wings to support the
sinking ship of BJP No prizes for a good guess The junior Minister is
lambasted by Deputy CM for not observing protocol in his unsolicited advice.
The under currents are on the surface if remarks attributed to GFP are any
sign of impending divorce It has dawned upon GFP that it is ideology closer
to Congress inspite of making a common cause with BJP and its leader who was at
the receiving end of vitriolic campaign last election The recent stirring of
hornets nest regarding employment at GOA University is a continuum of well
designed pattern of preparing grounds for distancing itself if situation so
demands
The mild rebuff by CM on GU and then U turn of placating the sentiments appear
to be mending of fences of mistrust Suddenly after a while GFP is posturing for
GOA Goemkarpon to remain afloat after enjoying the best of the worlds
Politicians are known selfish buffs feathering their own nest as much as
possible and as long as possible
GFP is apprehensive of poll results which may diminish its dominant position on
the coalition So what better strategy than to have one foot nestled elsewhere
for safety Wait and see the drama waiting to unfold
