[Goanet] Sharing another of my articles

Hoping it is not going to bore some members, I'd like
to share yet another of my articles with the readers.

*HOW I CAME BY THE 2 ELEPHANT FEET-by Mervyn Maciel*

During my service with the Provincial Administration in Marsabit in the
late 1940’s and 50’s, it was not uncommon to see elephants roaming in the
boma late in the evening and especially at night. Several would often
appear, feasting noisily on the pepper trees outside my government quarter
while we relaxed indoors.

The locals would often complain when elephants went on the rampage
destroying their shambas and crops. It was on one such occasion that the
Administration decided to call in the ‘expert’ – Terence Adamson (brother
of the famous George Adamson) to do some culling.

When news reached me that the local Turkana and others were feasting on
the

meat of an elephant shot not far from my house, I quickly sent one of our
station

labourers to try and rescue the 4 feet. I was too late as most of the
carcass had been

demolished, but the men managed to save 2 feet for me. They saved me a lot
of labour by hollowing out the feet (more meat for the ‘watu’!), leaving me
to clean out, disinfect and dry them out. I’ve lost count of the number of
bottles of disinfectant I used in the process. At one stage I thought I’d
lost one of the feet, only to find that hyenas had dragged it away during
the night(teeth marks there to prove this!) As it was too cold to have the
feet dried in Marsabit, I left them out in the Chalbi desert for 2 months.
No fear of these being stolen
as word had gone out that these belonged to the *Bwana Karani *in Marsabit.

Later on I stuffed these with the moss found around Marsabit (elephant
grass or old man’s beard), had suitable tops made for them and polished
them regularly with boot polish. I've

lost count of the number of polish tins I must have used on these
feet.These feet served

as stools on which many of my friends sat!

When we left Kenya for the U.K., I obtained an Export Permit from the
Game department after explaining how I came to possess the feet.

It was always my wish that the feet should go to a good Home, and I am
delighted that John Rendall(of “A lion called Christian fame”) who I met at
a luncheon in London, has accepted these on behalf of the George Adamson
Wildlife Preservation Trust, and pleased that they are returning to the
Africa(Kenya) where they belong.

[Goanet] LOS ANGELES: is now known for its homeless, trash and rats

2019-09-07 Thread Eddie
Right in the center of Los Angeles is the city council building and the
police department across the road. Police officers can clearly see the scale
of the disaster from their office windows. Here are the rows of homeless
people's tents.
Office workers in expensive suits casually walk by the flies, the stench,
and those who hit rock bottom. Over the four years he's been homeless,
Philip's gotten used to indifference. He's an archeologist who lost his job
after getting sick and couldn't pay his mortgage.

“Bank representatives and two ushers told me that I had 30 days to move out
of my house. 30 days later, they came back and kicked me out onto the
street. That's America. It's all about the banks here. Until they get their
last payment, they can take your house at any time. That's capitalism.”
The number of homeless in California is growing, along with housing prices.
It's tripled over the past ten years. Officially, there are 60,000 hobos in
Los Angeles and 500,000 in all of America. One in four American hobos lives
in California. Homeless people using bonfires to heat up their food caused
awful fires last year. They have flooded the suburbs and streets of big
cities. In Los Angeles, the homeless have occupied the entire Skid Row
district. Syringes are scattered everywhere here, and the crime rate is off
the charts.

Police officers who respond to an emergency in Skid Row, Los Angeles, risk
getting shot, stabbed, or even infected. Officers who were patrolling the
streets of LA got diagnosed with typhus. Doctors sound the alarm on all
federal channels.
“Some experts say that bubonic plague may already be here. Three cases of
typhus; one confirmed, another two probable. That's unbelievable. I can't
believe it. This is not even third-world country level, this is medieval.
The entire population is in danger.”
The local news show piles of trash and rats that spread the infection around
the city. A city council lawyer got infected with typhus at her office.
“Who gets infected with typhus? That's a medieval disease caused by rotting
garbage.”

Liz Greenwood is now suing the city council. She estimated the typhus
compensation at five million dollars. The city council is rapidly cleaning
the streets. However, the homeless' tents are still there and so are the
rats.

- Have you seen rats?
- Hundreds. Every night. Let me show you. Come on over here. See that pipe
behind the tents?
They're everywhere downtown. Philip didn't invite us in. His tent's not too
spacious. It's his bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom (simple water bottles).
There are only eight public restrooms in their area and 4,000 hobos living
in tents.

[Goanet] Tadgolas

2019-09-07 Thread Roland Francis
This is an amazing tropical palm fruit also called:
Ice Apples
Palmyra Palm fruit
And Nungu in South India

As young boys we delighted in its sweetness and succulence. The first bite
would penetrate its softness and draw out water that had a taste of its own
that equaled or exceeded the flavour of tender coconut water. The flesh was
exceedingly tasty, the light pink skin easily peeled.

It was abundantly available and cheap in summer. The street or home delivered
fruit vendors would bring them to Bombay homes from the suburban groves of
Bassein (now Vasai) Gorai, Borivli and Nala Sopara which were once picnic spots
for city dwellers where pure country hooch was a attraction for adults.

These spots were lush and green, supplying fresh vegetables to the city and
indeed being the lungs of a growing metropolis. Sadly, they have since turned
into concrete jungles housing high rise buildings that have destroyed Bombay’s
fragile ecosystem and caused floods in winter and pollution throughout the year.

Coming back to the tadgolas or ice apples, they are one of nature’s nutrition
wonders, an Indian superfruit that exceeds the benefits of Papayas and Guavas,
the two other highest rankers. Tadgolas are exceedingly good for diabetics.

Eating them when young and in Bombay we were blissfully unaware of this. All we
revelled in was its taste.

There is an adage that says “enjoy the little things because one day they turn
into big things”. This is definitely true of the Tadgolas which I cannot get in
Toronto even in exchange for hell or high water.

[Goanet] Chnadrayan 2, a scientific dventure

2019-09-07 Thread Nelson Lopes
Chadrayan 2 . a scientific adventure

India has come of age in space science. The indigenous approach is to be
appreciated. It is classic example of make in India. Our scientist are home
grown not products of renowned foreign Institutions. They have shown that
resolve, determination, focus and perseverance can achieve desired
results. India has used space for peaceful purposes like education
,communication, resource search and space exploration and come along way
with limited resources and optimum use

The interplanetary mission, Mangalyan was a success story at the very
first attempt and which is a scientific feat. Chandrayan one had limited
objectives andfirst to discover water molecules that raised expectations.
Shooting down of satellites in orbit was a fantastic piece of technology,
development of rockets , infrastructure for satellite launch, and multiple
satellite releases have earned India exclusive ranking among space
exploration Nations. We have also registered our presence at poles doing
commendable research. India has set its next goals of sending astronauts
into space building and training our own laboratory in space.

The loss of Chandrayan 2 in its final stage of decent above 2-1km no doubt
was disappointing. The loss of communication and its causes remain to be
deciphered,.P.M showed interest by his presence and on its failure assured
continued support, encouraged the Scientist for their achievements in spite
of small failure. It is argued and rightly so that 95% of goals were
achieved in various stages of race to the moon It was apprehended with
caution the terror of 15 minutes in itsfinal decent. The tasking of
lowering the velocity and soft landing were untested technologies, boldly
attempted for the first time with confidence .The remarks by P.M are
reassuring the scientific community of the break of new dawn with brighter
tomorrow .The Nation too is proud of our scientists at this stage of their
disappointment. They had planned for success, not failure but success
eluded them. Risk in space exploration is inherent and many Nations had
their fair share of failures. Failure is the greatest teacher of success
and moving forward. It is understood that India prepared itself with
shortest time period and at a fraction of costs involve led, Our scientist
have proved that they are second to none in their maiden decision to soft
land on the moon .The entire path and trajectory has been picture perfect,
which proves the capability otf our scientists

What perhaps was debatable is the unnecessary hype created that
rexpetations and which could have been avoided in the final touch down and
which was the main cause of heart burning disappointments India is
competing with none but testing its own ability

India and scientists of ISRO will not abandoned their determination to
pursue their goals of interplanetary missions despite the current set back
of disappointments. A whole new generations of scientists are eager to
shoulder the responsibility in future .Fortunately a number of women in
lead roles were at the heart of the mission that have inspired, motivated
girls. Failures and success are part of life and any adventure, specially
the Unknown, where India dared to go where no one had dreamt in the past
The results would have aided future missions to the poles, where the
temperatures are at -217 degrees and hope of water is a great possibility
The scientist and all concerned with Chandrayan 2 need to be saluted in
their hour of distress. The orbiter is expected to be in service for two
years and a lot of useful information will be beamed back to earth. The
mystery of loss of signal and what caused the soft landing will be
unearthed soon as everyone is eagerly awaiting the truth and analysis

[Goanet] Angels of Hell

2019-09-07 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Beyond the Grave: Looking back at Angels of Hell

For the week which passed (17/7/21-14) when I was alive on Planet Earth.

Hindu philosophy teaches us truth is beyond good and evil, and for
this reason I think in terms of angels of hell and angels of heaven.
Both are angels, some we perceive as bad and others as good.

The human mind reduces everything to a dichotomy. That is how the mind
works, and so we have good and bad, day and night, yesterday and
today.

Where do we draw the line in language, and where do we draw the line
in existence? It is convenient because it is how language and the
human mind works, and has great practical use. It, however, doesn’t
exist in reality.

A few years ago the Union Aviation Minister came down to Goa and told
us Goans how we could lose Mopa International Airport.

If Goans don’t want it then it could go to another State, namely Maharashtra.

Does it mean Goans were shedding tears, even crocodile tears? Goans,
in fact, have been against the Mopa International Airport except for
the politicians who it is widely rumoured have bought land under
various names over the years.

What’s in a name you might well ask?
With reports in the press and Goans recently agitating against this
issue of name changing, the public has witnessed a brouhaha as
outsiders of lower economic class and castes are making a bee line to
acquire Goan nomenclature for the purpose of securing privileges
otherwise unavailable to them. Any name is okay as long as it is it
not a wolf in sheep clothing; in other words, a Lamani in disguise. So
say some Goans, rightly or wrongly.

Now, to get back on track, we have the Union Minister of Railway tell
the Goa government and Goans in particular how the people of this
state might lose the chance to acquire a second railway track, and the
same might go to another state. Bad news? Really?

Will Karnataka and Maharastra fight over the great opportunity for the
second railway track which is primarily to transport coal?

Coal, in case there is someone on this planet who does not know is bad
for your health. The people of Vasco have been fighting against coal
pollution for years now and paying a price for a deterioration of
their health through the nose and lungs.

They can only hope the people of Karnataka and Maharashtra States will
grab the opportunity to inhale coal dust every day until they die if
it is their choice and their dream. Goans, in fact, will celebrate for
at least a month non-stop if the second track is taken away and given
to another state.

Please keep the second railway track away with all our blessings and
good wishes, Goans will sing in unison except for the majority of our
politicians.

MLA Alina Saldana has stated eloquently and clearly how Goa is not
against development but this is not development - is it a gift from an
angel of hell?

The centuries old Goan heritage houses which run parallel to the
railway tracks are already damaged, and this is not good news. The MLA
has unequivocally stated she is behind the villagers on this issue.

The Union Railway Minister and angel of hell has been given a polite
but firm no. He is now free to decide which state he is going to
present the second railway track - and if they will accept his gift.

We wish him all the best and if the states of Karnataka and Maharastra
are going to fight over this El Dorado (which I doubt considerably)
let the angel of hell toss a coin.

The angels of heaven no doubt will rejoice.

An invasion of HK might have an adverse effect on everything surrounding this
7 million territory.

by Bruce Gilley
02 SEP 2019

A giant Asian state with a potent anti-Western identity.  A
European colonial enclave on its periphery. Growing
agitation from the Asian giant to bring the enclave into
line. After a few months of threat, an invasion. The West
does nothing.

Hong Kong in 2019?  Maybe.  The scenario did occur
in India's subjugation of the Portuguese territory
of Goa in 1961.  It holds lessons for policy makers
today.  The most important: standing on the
sidelines and enjoining both sides to work out
their differences is an invitation to conquest.
The time for the West to deter nationalist
aggression by China against Hong Kong is before the
          situation escalates.

[Goanet] Modiyaan

2019-09-07 Thread Rajan Parrikar
I stayed up to watch the Chandrayaan 2 drama. Too bad. These missions are
unforgiving and there is zero margin for error.

As the USA and the erstwhile Soviet Union found out, success in space
doesn’t come by easy and not without many long, hard, painful lessons. So
India shouldn’t be discouraged.

But the Indian public would do well to not treat this as a combination of
Bollywood and a T20 cricket match. Enough of the nonsensical “we’re proud
of you” chants. Nature doesn’t care about your pride. Space engineering is
tough business.

The visuals of the Indian control room looked like the typical mess you see
at an airport waiting room whenever a flight full of disorderly Indians has
been delayed. Starring in this comedy was the distinguished space scientist
Dr. N. Modi. I was half expecting Dr. Modi to puff his 56” and demand a
screwdriver so he could fix the problem. Like Dev Anand in the movie
Lootmaar - the aircraft has an issue and Dev-sahab (“the world’s best
pilot”) goes in with a took box of screwdrivers and spanner and next thing
we know the engines are spooling up! Perhaps ISRO should hire Salim-Javed
next time for some good dialogues.

PS: I highly recommend the "Mission Control" documentary -
