[Goanet] Press Invite: a Social Design Festival I Goa I Feb 17-21, 2020

[Kokum]

We'd like to invite you to the conference of a Social Design Festival,
initiated by Kokum design Trust, partnering with Entertainment Society of
Goa and supported by the British Council and IFB Goa. It seeks dialogue and
win-win solutions.

aSDF is instituted as a national independent festival, with a core focus on
design and socio-environmental issues. Because Social problems are Design
problems.

It pro-actively seeks to bring stakeholders and designers together to
create win-win solutions, highlighting clever interventions wherever they
may be, as well as connecting the people behind them.

Socio-environmental issues and the design world still exist in mutually
exclusive spheres, leaving lots of missed opportunities to unite and create
a real impact we wish to see.

For too long, the design has been recognized as simply a skill set for
surface application only and not for its process, which compulsorily
includes empathy.

For too long, have Government agencies worked towards solutions, not
realizing the ally they have in the design. The Government is and will be
the biggest beneficiary of an integrated approach to action.

With this Festival, we seek to encourage dialogue, generate content and
create interest in furthering ideas for future applications. Its goal will
be to connect all good efforts through example and networking.

This is a five-day festival that is split into workshops and a conference.

The workshops are rooted in real-life situations which in some cases are
together with government agencies such as CCP, Smart Cities Initiative and
the GHRSSIDC. They are mentored by leading professionals -

The Two-Day Conference will begin with the presentations of the workshop

at 9.30 am being of relevance to Goa.

The founders of Kokum will be there for an interview during the course of

BE PART OF PROBLEM-SOLVING EFFORTS.*

Despite this, social design, or efforts of
socio-environmental improvement have been informally active across India.
It is time to engage with and celebrate these efforts by bringing it into
the mainstream narrative through a festival.

*Sign up for one of the immersive three-day workshops curated by leading
professionals. These include exercises aimed to make the most of diverse
representations on real-time issues. The results will be peer-reviewed at
the start of the conference. Additionally, get inspired by the success
stories of 14 speakers over the two-day conference.*
*HARVESTING DESIGN IDEAS FOR POSITIVE CHANGE*

*WORKSHOPS ARE THREE-DAY HACKATHONS THAT ADDRESS DESIGN ISSUES IN THE
SOCIAL REALM.*

Seven workshops will run parallel to each other over a span of three days,
hence each participant can only register for one workshop. A seat at the

[Goanet] IN DEATH OUR WENDELL WAS DISRESPECTED BY THE GOA GOVERNMENT

Our very celebrated late Wendell Rodricks was a proud recipient of the
Padmashri Award in 2014.  It is the fourth highest Civilian award in our
country and yet the Goa Government chose not to Honour our very
accomplished Goan with a State funeral.  In a rank breach of protocol, it
was very sad and so unfortunate that our departed great Goan was not
honoured in a manner befitting a man of rare talent whose talents touched
the lives and hearts of many the world over.

The Government has displayed complete disregard to the great works and
deeds of Wendell despite him having been recognized for his achievements in
life and bestowed with the award as Padmashri.  Chief Minister Pramod
Sawant owes an apology to late Wendell’s family and the people of Goa for
the sheer disrespect shown to late Wendell for not even deputing an
official high level government representative to attend the final journey
of our very own internationally acclaimed fashion designer.

Not being accorded a State funeral did not diminish Wendell’s contribution
to the State and country in anyway but has only exposed the insensitivity
and moral incompetence of the Goa Government. When will the Goa Government
realise that people like Wendell whose rare talents, contribution and
legacy earned him a Padmashri award in life should also have been honoured
in death.  After all the iconic role model Wendell touched the lives of
many in the state, in the country and globally in a variety of interests
and causes from fashion design to Bollywood and from the environment to
arts and cuisine. The restoration and conversion to a museum of his house
with over 800 rare exhibits will no doubt benefit generations of people to
come.

As the representatives of those very people, the Government had a duty to
honour Wendell in the way that people would expect them to with love,
respect and gratitude. Other peoples’ lives do matter in life and in death
not just the lives of politicians!

Ribandar is all geared to very gracefully and so warmly welcome tomorrow on
Thursday 20th February at 5 pm our very dear Archbishop, the Most Reverend
our Grace Filipe Neri Ferrao who will inaugurate the new Parochial House of
our Church.

The credit for such a magnanimous achievement goes to all but mainly to the
so outstanding Architect Ashley Mascarenhas and to the Structural Engineer
Paresh Gaitonde not forgetting all who worked so hard including every
labourer who toiled so relentlessly to make such an impossible mission
happen.

But more importantly the untiring dedicated efforts and selfless commitment
of our ever so proactive Parish Priest Rev. Fr Antonio Lourenco Fernandes
to upgrade the Church premises with the much needed facilities will be
always gratefully remembered and recognized for decades to come. Thank you
Rev. Father.

Our Ribandar Church had for decades been lacking in very basic amenities
while the infrastructure was so very pathetic. So finally there is some
glowing light down the tunnel.

Apart from the well written Moira President's Centenary message and an
editorial by me, there is a reprint of the late Dr. Teotonio de Souza's A
Peep into the Past, a history of Moira which is certainly not the wedding
album sort that village histories tend to be.

Then there are excellent articles on the Communidade of Moira by Leroy
Veloso and an article which focuses on the geography of the village by
Nazar da Silva.

While these articles are ostensibly about Moira they also are equally
enlightening for other villages as most villages have Communidades and
'khazans' and 'gawars' (watertables).

Then there is an article on the hundred years of the club by me and on the
musicians of Moira (and there are a host of them led by the legendary Micky
Correa and the music teacher Philomena D'Cruz and the drummer Paklo or
Xavier de Moira) by Dr. Glenis Mendonca and Jeffrey D'Souza.

And an article on Moira's biodiversity by Karl Pinto Souza and Jeffrey
D'Souza illustrated by David de Souza's photography.

There are nostalgic articles on various aspects and eras of Moira by the
award winning novelist Jerry Pinto, Pio Sequeira, Betsy Pinto-Nunes and
Liza Sequeira and a photo-essay on the octogenarions and nonagenarians of
Moira by David de Souza, the internationally renowned art photographer.

The article is peppered with cartoons and caricatures by Air Vice Marshal
Gilez Gomez VSM who after an illustrious career in the IAF has started a
new and again literally illustrious career post retirement as a cartoonist.

So yes, even if you think I'm biased when I say this, I think it'll be a
collector's item, and although the price is reasonable (₹ 150/= was what
the Club President Oswald Cordeiro last told me although I'll know for sure
tomorrow) there's a very limited number of copies to go on sale. That's
tomorrow, February 16 after 5 pm at the Moira Club.

As the old cliché goes: Hurry till Stocks Last!
