7 But the LORD said to Samuel: Do not judge from his appearance or from his
lofty stature, because I have rejected him.

God does not see as a mortal, who sees the appearance. The LORD looks into
the heart.

Re: [Goanet] Who is this Joao?

2020-05-16 Thread Roland Francis
João Barros is an actual person. As Son of Salcette as you can get. Probably
from Velsão.

Ex East Africa, once resident in New Jersey and then on teaching assignment in
Japan followed by retirement in Goa, he writes poems on Goanet probably in the
Haiku style he may have come across in Japan.

That is my take. Perhaps João himself may correct me.

Sung in different voices, fados are not my favourite music genre on account of
the haunting wails but this is bright and one of the exceptions.

Some info on the Konkani Film Mogacho Aunddo.
I understand that some reels of the film which were in very bad state were
given
to Isidore Dantas who then asked Bardroy Barreto to do something about it.
They were working on it, but up to now there has been no news if they
completed the film. Probably the family of late Al Jerry Braganza
will know the details as his wife Bernadette is still living.
A report appears here

Big difference it seems to me. Ponto Morandi was built in 1967.

On the latest Goa bridge the concrete has yet to dry.

[Goanet] Books on Goan Houses

2020-05-16 Thread augusto pinto
I wanted to read up on Goan architecture.

Unfortunately when they were in print I didn't buy books about Goan houses
as at the time they were a bit expensive and I didn't have enough money at
the time.

However fortunately for me my neighbour from Moira Leroy Veloso who
collects books about Goa did buy some important ones so I borrowed a few
from him. I'll write about the books I borrowed before delving into what I
own myself.

One of the more authoritative ones was Houses of Goa. It was first
published by the architect Gerard da Cunha and Architects Anonymous in
1999. The book went into a second edition in 2000 and a third edition in
2006.

Its text was written by Hera Pandit and Annabel Mascarenhas and the
photographs are done by Ashok Koshy. The book has a foreword by Gerard da
Cunha.

Wtiting about Goan houses inevitably forces the writer to delve into
history, for houses are the product of one's times.

This is something which Houses of Goa richlh acknowledges as it explains
how and why Goans built houses in the way they did over the ages.

For instance the authors throw up the concept of the 'inward looking'
traditional Hindu houses as compared with the post conversion 'outward
looking' Christian houses.

The old Hindu houses were ones where the women were to be shielded away
from the eyes of outsiders. Hence while they had a lot of space indoors in
the form of an inner courtyard called a raz-angounn the outside of the
house was one which blocked the view to outsiders as to what way happening
indoors.

After many Goans got converted to Christianity the houses changed
dramatically. The houses, especially those of the rich, began to be
designed to display the class of the owners. They were meant to be like
works of art, something that someone could marvel at from outside. On the
inside furniture became important where in Hindu architecture there was
little furniture.

At the same time there were features of of embellishment borrowed from
church architectural features like striking windows and gates.

This post is getting overlong so I'll stop here.

But the work of Heta Pandit et al is something well worth reading and
pondering about if one wants to understand Goa.

Re: [Goanet] Goanet...The return or indenture

2020-05-16 Thread Vivian A. DSouza
With great shame I recall the pithy sum we paid our servants in the old days.
Till this day I am haunted by the face of the grizzled old "Mochi" or
shoemaker/repairer, who came from door to door to repair our shoes He re-soled
my shoes for a very tiny sum of money.  I recalled how he looked at the work at
hand, the small piece  of leather in his hand, and figured out how much profit
he would make...a few paisa.  The "Bisti" or waterman who drew water from
the open well that we shared with several other people/   He was gaunt and
grizzled, and drew water with a rope and pulley, and came to our kitchen and
bathroom to fill the clay water cisterns.  His pay for the month cuold not have
been more than 3 rupees.  Painful memories but that is in the past.
Where I live in Goa today, things have changed dramatically.  Casual laborers
are non existent.  We have to compete with others to get casual laborers from
Bihar, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand etc.  We have to go and pick them
up from where the laborers gather, give them a ride to our homes, and pay them
Rs. 700/- per month for a total of perhaps 7 hours of actual work.  And even
these laborers have disappeared and returned to their hometowns because of the
current Covid-19 crisis.
Children of the laborers who served our village in my childhood, mainly helping
tend our rice fields, repair our roof before the monsoon rains, and various
other menial tasks, are now well educated, with some of them doctors,
engineers, and government servants and bank clerks. They all own cars and
scoters, and have built palatial homes in the village.  And so it should be.
The landed lass known as bhatkars are living in the memories of days gone by,
with their children mostly clerks, with a few aspiring to go to college. Our
rice fields lie fallow, our cashew plantations remain un-picked (by the owners)
and the bhatkar class now mainly rely on remittances from their children,
serving on cruise lines, or in the gulf states.
If there are indentured servants, it is definitely not in the Goa that I know.

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST COVID
Since it is a RNA chemical present treatment and expected vaccine is not
guaranteed. Besides there are different strains, and known to be
mutating/changing. The strain in the west is perhaps more virulent than the
one we are dealing with. New research shows it can be in the air as nano
particles and even emanate from the mouth when an infected person talks!
Micro droplets from persons saliva. We do have a lot more to learn before we
can conquer Corona! Unfortunately seen in actions of people after lifting of
lockdown, many including our politicians are not learning fast enough and
using this tragedy to go back to business as usual

[Goanet] Dance Me to the End of Love - Leonard Cohen (Basia Bulat cover)

2020-05-16 Thread Roland Francis
If there should be a cover for Leonard Cohen’s ‘Dance Me...’ it is fitting that
36 year old Canadian folk singer songwriter Barbara Josephine (Basia) Bulat of
London Ontario should do the honours.

Of Polish origin, Basia is known for playing the autoharp. Growing up in
Toronto, her mother was a music teacher for piano and guitar and the radio at
home was permanently tuned to an oldies channel. That I am sure, helped develop
her retro style.
