[Goanet] Goans And Reading Observations With Example From Tanzania

2020-07-19 Thread Adolfo Mascarenhas
John and others

I was interested in the comments made by John and what followed after Selma
made her comments on the problems of the Book Market.

:::First, I will start with my own experience. I ordered for 100 copies of
Judy Luis-Watson book on the Dawn of Jazz in Dar

::I got the books by DHL. I bought 100 copies of the bookMainly to
raise funds for St. Joseph's Convent School and for the Interdenominational
School for Girls in Mwanga (a small town where on a clear night you can spy
Mt. Kili) ,Tanzania. Yes there were 5 Goan nuns who had started the
school, and Sr. Coutinoho was from Quepem . I have about 30 copies left
(some in Goa itself, others in Dar or in Stoneham ) The three largest
buyers were The French Cultural Centre, the US Embassy Staff and Professor
colleagues now Ministers yes as the Minister of Foreign Affairs said it
would be inspirational for his girls ! :::

:::Three Goans bought a copy eachDid the DI in Dar buy any ...the
dedicated Room which serves as a Library is there alright. About a year ago
when I asked for the keys to get in , I was told there was nothing
of importance ...I insisted It was a gold mine just the
records, minutes, old books my late wife, the First Tanzanian Professor
in Library Science, had volunteered to help ...it was not a priority. for
the Management :::

:::TWO , John you are right, just like how you buy books and take them with
you, I do the same on every trip I have made to Goa ...the books are so
affordable :::

THREE Culturally, one can only appreciate what there is in Goa and the
Contribution of the Diaspora if you are broad minded...if you have hang ups
about CASTE, COLOUR of SKIN, & r CHRISTIAN & belong to CLUB :::THE 4
C's qite Sinful) ..then you have no time to appreciate on being a real
Goan except in a narrow and apish sense...see we eat cheese, speak English
and have an exclusive Goan Club(No Africans, no Bakers,  Cooks ::E, F, }

FINALLY You cannot force any one to be a PURE GOAN...your brother
Peter made that loaded statement. That was Makerere for you ...our friends
were Diverse :::

 Grandolfo

Back in Quepem , wondering whether the curfew would get rid of barking dogs
...

PS .Dogs have a social language does anybody understand BARKISH :

About a year or two I wrote about this subject on Goanet and want to repeat
it as a sign of hope to those who despair.

I befriended Frederick Noronha in the early 2010s after being enthralled
with his Goa1556 books.
In 2014 I bought a whole bunch of books from him - about 100 copies of
about 30 titles and asked him to ship them by the slowest mail to reduce
the price.

I then sold them at a stall at the GOA Toronto's St Francis Xavier Social.
I priced them at my cost (list price plus apportioned shipping charges) to
encourage people to read.

In total I sold about 60 books at that Social. (The rest I gave away as
gifts over the years.)

In 2016 when I visited Goa to do my genealogy research at the Panjim
Historical Archives I bought about enough to fill a small suitcase -
perhaps 30 Goan books. (When I arrived back in Toronto the suitcase was
totally wrecked - but it held together!) These again I would sell a cost or
give as gifts instead of taking wine bottles for a party.

Goan history and anthropology is fascinating - and I learnt more about

One of the things that is being lost is an appreciation for the Goan clan
system. I wrote a short article and published it (see attached) because
even in Goa people have largely forgotten about this.

(Incidentally, a more extensive article about clans and the Moira gaunkari
has been written by Leroy Veloso and published in Augusto's recent
publication about the Moira Club.)

Besides that the Goan experience in countries around the world is of
phenomenal interest. (Special thanks to Selma).

There is a demand for them, but it takes a lot of trouble. One needs to
have a love for books, and a love to read. (I make the time as I am not a
TV watcher.)

Perhaps my brother Peter's example has led me in this direction - but there
is so much to learn There is so much that is interesting about Goans. ( I
read a lot of other stuff. For example, my favourite read over the last 35
years has been Church history, Christian Theology, the history of theology,
Bible study. I also read Canadian history. So it's not that I am easily
pleased.)

Cheers
John

BSNL DYING A SLOW DEATH?
What the High Command is doing to the Congress, the BJP appears to be doing to
BSNL. Right now it is running on auto pilot. It is such a shame that an
organization that has served India so well is being strangulated by government
to benefit private players! Most of the staff have availed of VRS and the big
new buildings of BSNL are empty with not even a skleleton staff! When the
complaint booking machine works, the complaint is rarely attended to in a hurry
if at all. I understand a few technicians of some private party is now
attending to service customers still lingering in the hope that the government
meant its promise of resurecting this once bemoth that served India so well and
must become competition to the private players in public, security and
government's interest! FN has written a nostalgic piece on this subject in
Sunday Navind Times Panaroma. The central government it appears is busy with
toppling the Rajasthan government rather than attending to serious
administrative matters, shooting up high prices where the middle class and poor
are bleeding, deteriorating rule of law and vested interests destroying what is
left of protected environment and nature!
