Amita Kanekar

Portuguese Sea Forts Goa. With Chaul, Korlai And Vasdi

Jaico Publishing House,

Mumbai

This is a guide book, beautifully produced and at 499 Rps, in 2015 a real
bargain. The Photographer was Sunendra Kumar. Inside there are colourful
layouts of the fort as if they were pieces of heritage tapestry.

The beauty of this glossy book is that it tells you quite a bit about the
links between the sea, oceans and gateways and early Portugese colonialism
based in Goa.

Forts were much more than defensive sites, they were chapels and
Churches, convents and monestries and mansions for the officer, gardens
and places to grow food. Invariably, their location and vista n were
stunning.

::: There contents, starting on page 22 tells us that are nine Forts in
Goa alone and another 3 in “”Provincia No Norte””::l

:::There is a glossary and an Index, Goa has 40 entries ::: The word
“ramparts’’ beats all entries !!

I visited Fort Aguada more than 10 years ago. I was impressed by so many
aspects including the fresh water supply, escape passages etc

Lost In Goa

PS if Amita Kanekar had written on the Portugese Forts in East Africa there
would be no work for me

[Goanet] GOA LOST SATYA PAL MALIK WHEN WE NEEDED HIM THE MOST

2020-09-10 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The hidden agenda of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the BJP in Goa stood
exposed in the very crude manner in which they overnight shunted Governor
Satya Pal Malik.

Pramod Sawant needs to explain to the people of Goa as to what was lacking
in Satya Pal Malik that required his removal from our State. All that he
was doing as Governor was to suggest corrective measures at the wrong
doings and misplaced priorities of the Government. He was only discharging
his constitutional duties by reflecting the views and needs of the people
of Goa.

The very outspoken and upright Satya Pal Malik had the spine to keep Prime
Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah informed of the wrong
doings by the Pramod Sawant Government. It is also very anguishing that
while Pramod Sawant was removing Satya Pal Malik as Governor of Goa the
other eleven Ministers stood as mute spectators.

It is appalling that the Government did not even bother to give Satya Pal
Malik an appropriate send-off. If he was allowed to stay back in Goa for a
few more days the public would have accorded Satya Pal Malik a People’s
farewell for all the good work he did in his brief 10 month tenure in Goa.
The very amiable Governor Malik was very popular and became the people’s
voice while making the Raj Bhavan accessible to the common man. He had a
mind of his own and to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s utter dismay Satya
Pal Malik had very rightly refused to be a rubber stamp Governor.

It is a travesty of justice that in India, often called the world’s largest
democracy a Governor appointed by the President, can be high handedly and
summarily transferred like a thief in the night against the wishes of the
people on the advice of a Chief Minister who found the obvious truth of
misplaced priorities and incompetence a bitter pill to swallow instead of
being grateful for the sound advice he received from Governor Satya Pal
Malik. In a democracy, the wishes of the people must be paramount not the
Chief Minister who may be in power but not in control.

No high ranking official of the stature of Governor Satya Pal Malik who
behaved impeccably and knowledgeably in the best interests of our people
and State should be been faced with a dictatorial covert ultimatum by a
Chief Minister and Prime Minister that says do it my way or take the
highway.
