[Goanet] TIME FOR A TOTAL BAN ON FIRECRACKERS AND FIREWORKS

Environmental and noise pollution should be a matter of concern to all. The
Goa Government needs to totally ban firecrackers and all fireworks in the
best interest of protecting the Health of the people from air and noise
pollution. They cause serious air pollution, produce a lot of garbage and
noise, and is a huge disturbance especially for the children and the
elderly. They can cause distress, especially as fireworks can sound like
gunfire and can aggravate a nervous condition.

Firecrackers are in fact a waste of money. At a time of a raging pandemic
and the crashing economy where every paisa matters, we all have a serious
responsibility as a State and as individuals to get our priorities right.
Safeguarding our health and protecting the lives of others is the one and
only priority currently and for the foreseeable future. We should not be
making it worse through pollution and a serious health hazard caused by
fireworks.

The adverse effects of fireworks on people, animals and property must not
be underestimated. They contain chemical components like saltpetre, carbon
and sulphur. When these are ignited hazardous oxides of gases are emitted
which causes suffocation, reduces visibility and other health hazards.
Medical experts state that the air gets contaminated with toxic gases and
remains for days.  The toxic elements that reach the lungs, cannot be
removed thereafter and can cause grave health issues. It causes long-term
effects on children. They frighten children and adults, cause fires and
terrify pets and wildlife.

The sparkles from fireworks may last a few seconds but the hazardous toxic
air pollution can linger in our environment, towns and cities for many
hours. Such a short-lived entertainment does not justify the immediate and
long term damage to our health, wealth and environment.

Once a total ban on firecrackers and fireworks is in place, there should be
very rigorous enforcement. People acting in violation should be severely
penalized so that it acts as a deterrent to all. Let us hope and pray that
in these troubled and challenging times, common sense will prevail and that
fireworks will be banned by the Government for the common good so we can
all focus on our one and only priority of  fighting the virus and ending
the pandemic.

The exit of Donald John Trump will be good news not only for the United
States of America but for the entire world. One fails to comprehend as to
how the Americans entrusted someone so unpredictable and erratic with the
White House four years ago.

All through his tenure the flamboyant Donald Trump proved how incapable and
weird he has been. The 74 year old might have grown in age but his
immaturity was apparent all through his term and it only got worse in the
Presidential election campaign to just further deteriorate while the
counting of votes began.

Winning or losing is part of the game including on the political
chessboard. One has to graciously accept the people’s verdict and move on.
Leaders have to be role models by displaying high levels of statesmanship
instead of childishly throwing tantrums and flexing muscles while making
unfounded allegations of poll rigging.

Donald Trump will go down in history for being an irresponsible President
of the USA and his conduct in the last few days in particular is
unforgivable and unpardonable, having conducted himself in the way he did.
This display of foul, political rhetoric especially in a democracy is not
acceptable.

May the spectacular victory of the 77 year old Joe Biden herald a ray of
hope.  The credit for his triumph amongst others goes to former President
Barack Obama who worked and campaigned tirelessly to ensure that sanity
returns to the White House. It may now need a tanker or two of dettol to
cleanse the political filth that the ego puffed Donald Trump leaves behind.
