I think the interesting and real question is, why are there so many Roman
Catholics and American Bishops supporting Trump, conspiracy theories, and
the GOP Agenda?

The simplistic answer is not an accurate assessment.

A question I still ask myself today is why a liar, narcissist and infantile
behaving man who operates with no care to gigantic conflicts of interest,
can command such loyal obedience among a large section of Americans even
after constant exposure by the media. Not only that, why are they able to
tolerate the complete degradation of their country’s reputation throughout

I really look forward to genuine input from Goans in America who are

[Goanet] RIBANDAR HEALTH CARE CENTRE IS ON TRACK

2020-12-05 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Spoke yesterday to our Health Minister Vishwajit Rane who has reassured on
the commitment of the government to set up a 30 bedded Health Care
facilities at the Old Ribandar Hospital. He stated that as he was for the
last two days busy in his constituency, the file pertaining to our Ribandar
Health Care Centre will be immediately cleared and sent to the Chief
Minister’s office for his final approval. He has been kind enough to also
state that he would request Health Secretary Amit Satija to kindly pursue
the file.

Have already spoken to senior officers in the CM’s office and requested
their assistance in the matter. Will also speak to the Chief Minister once
the file lands on his lap.

I am very confident that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will live up to that
solemn promise he made to our Core group when we met him on 15th October

Re: [Goanet] Freddy Mercury's school....

2020-12-05 Thread Roland Francis
Although one sees Goan-sounding names in St Peters Panchgani, most officials
are not Goans. Most of them are from the Mangalore area or rural Maharashtra
towns with a Portuguese connection in distant colonial times.

Historically, converted Christians and many Anglo-Indians in the Bombay and
Maharashtra area belonged to the Anglican Church of England (now Church of
South India or Church of North India). Add to that a solid Manglorean bloc
converted by Christian Anglican and Scottish missions to Anglicanism, Jehovahs
Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Basel Mission followers and so on. Many of
these converts have Portuguese and Marathi last names.

St Peters Panchgani belongs to the Bombay Diocesan Trust (which was and is an
Anglican diocese with the head being the Bishop of Bombay). Among many heritage
churches and properties in Bombay like Christ Church School and the erstwhile
named Scottish Orphanage High School (both elite institutions once) in the
former Bombay Province, is St Peters in Panchgani, Satara District of
Maharashta, a beautiful hill station.

Incidentally the Bombay Diocesan Trust and the Bombay Bishop have more
influence in Maharashtra politics than the Catholic Archbishop (the late
Cardinal Valerian Gracias, an exception) because the locals see it as an Indian
Church rather than a foreign church, with its pastors and school officials all
being fluent in Marathi as well as English.

St Peters has long been the go-to school for Bombay’s elite Christians and
Goans who saw the need for their children to get a top class education in a
boarding situation, either for the high standard itself or because high ranking
parents were in all-India services and jobs and were transferred frequently.

The Protestant nature of the school also accounts for Goans in Africa not
sending their children there (even though many could afford it) and instead
opting for Jesuit and Convent run schools in Bombay, Poona, Belgaum and the
Diocesan-run Monte-de-Guirim in Goa.

St Peters remains one of the top tier secondary educational institutions in
India although not a part of the All-India Anglo Indian School system.

[Goanet] MAY WORTHY PERSONS BE CHOSEN TO RUN OUR INFORMATION COMMISSION

2020-12-05 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The current selection process for Goa’s Chief Information
Commissioner (GSIC) and State Information Commissioner (SIC) should not be
stage managed and a mere eyewash. The selection process has to be free,
fair, transparent and not vitiated by political inter meddling.

The Right to Information Act is a powerful and potent tool to expose
corruption and maladministration, and in this direction an independent and
effective Information Commission is a vital mechanism that has to be in
place. To ensure proper implementation of the Right to Information Act, the
Information Commission should comprise of independent minded persons of
integrity, who would not succumb to the pressures and pulls of politicians
in power. Their primary focus must be to defend the rights and liberty of
individuals to have access to Government information, files and documents
pertaining to the Governmental operations, performance and decisions.

The Government is in the process of selecting the next GSIC and a SIC. 32
candidates have applied for the post of GSIC while 25 are in the fray to be
a SIC. 20 of these aspiring candidates have applied for both the posts. The
applicants include retired bureaucrats, former judges, advocates,
journalists, activists, serving officials and even a politician. Over a
dozen of the applicants trying their luck this time around were
unsuccessful in their earlier attempts for a post at the State Information
Commission.

The government in September advertised both the posts for which Eminence in
Public life is absolutely mandatory with knowledge and experience in the
field of Law, Science , Social Service, Management, Mass media,
Administration and Governance. Both the posts carry a handsome monthly
salary of Rs 2, 25,000 besides other perks. The term of office for both the
posts is five years but they cannot continue in office after attaining 65
years.

A committee headed by the Chief Secretary shortlists the candidates and the
final selection will be done by a high level committee headed by the Chief
Minister and comprising of the Leader of the Opposition along with a
Minister nominated by the Chief Minister.

It is imperative that the best and brightest are selected for these coveted
positions. Eminence in public life as required by law should be the guiding
factor in selecting the persons to these vital posts. May Justice and Fair
play prevail to ensure openness and transparency in the functioning of
Government which is paramount. Failure to do so will erode the faith and
trust of the very people it is designed to serve.

[Goanet] Goa is a political boiling pot

2020-12-05 Thread Nelson Lopes
Goa is political boiling pot

Goa after liberation in 1961 joined the main stream of Indian political
system. The colonial hangover still persists with remnants showing its
effects . It is progressed with leaps and bounds compared to 450 years of
colonial rule. But the nostalgia is not yet abandoned . The union
territory status permitted Goans to adjust and decide . The MGP and
United Goans were focussed on merger and non merger .The Ghost of merger
was laid to rest and both parties tried to reinvent but failed MGP
founders embraced Congress but some die hard managed to survive it, till it
now has also lost its shine. The status of state and language kept
political pot boiling till it was achieved. No issues thereafter kept
Goans glued to grandiose dreams.Congress entered the fray and swallowed
all local outfits to emerge as party, secular and for development
agenda. The idea made sense as local politicians were feathering their own
nests
Slowly ,new outfits under different labels ebbed out sooner than later
.BJP flew on the wings of MGP ,the oldest party was extinguished out of
relevance and is gasping for breath at the moment.Currently BJP as the
national party has managed to dig its foot into Goan politics , while GFP
is making waves with APP trying and testing political waters with no
success. The resignation of APP representative has put a break into its
future
plans and is a temporary setback.
The Goans have assumed notoriety at all India level for changing parties,
becoming CM,s , defections ,floor crossing at drop of hat, that has
taught Indian politicians something to note seriously of new experiments
of political games. The breed of selfish politicians have their own axe to
grind and voters also seem to favour defectors and corrupt individuals to
survive and flourish
Presently it looks like that voters are fed up with fly by night local
parties trying to create political space and then sliding into ruling party
combine, abandoning its avowed aims, deceiving voters on promises of
development in a bid for personal ambitions. The old and spent political
forces still survive on brute money and muscle power to sway opinions in
theur favour and continue to be on political map of Goa The hope of new
faces, young
and dynamic have also fallen prey to greed of power, positions,
influence and perks unlimited. THE emerging dominance of BJP does not agur
well for democratic ,effective opposition. The defection en mass of
congress legislators is a serious matter to voters of trust betrayal.
The sheer size of the State is subject to political machinations of
permutations and combinations, inspite of boasting of an educated
electorate . The large influx of the migrants is not only changing
demographic status but concentrated pockets are also tilting the political
fortunes and scales
It is time that traditional Goan politics rooted in religuous divide for
its survival is further accentuated by National party, openly spousing the
cause of majority sentiment to the hilt. HENCE Goans need to consider a
viable alternative to politics of hate, exclusion and divisions on
religious consideration.
APP, , which has survived massive political onslauhht in Delhi elections
and decimated BJP might surely merits the choice to extend the
progressive, people orienred policies to the State of Goa
It is time that Goans bite the bullet and usher in Change from old wine
in new bottle syndrome
